COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 44 The Cotopaxi volcano continues with high levels of internal activity and moderate levels of external activity. During the last hours emissions of gas and steam, accompanied with a low ash load, which reached 200 meters above the crater and headed westward were registered. Today there has not been any reports of rain or ash falls in the towns nearby. Actions Carried Out The Technical Secretariat of Disabilities continues to census people with disabilities. Until today, they have georeferenced people with disabilities and their families in six rural parishes located in the areas of influence of the volcano. 147 volunteers are divided into 25 teams, who visited and provided training sessions on Inclusive Family Emergency Plans to approximately 1,600 families. In addition, to identify homes where there is a disabled person, white flags were placed to serve as a reference for relief agencies in case of an evacuation. In the parish of Pastocalle in the canton of Latacunga the local Government of Cotopaxi alongside the Head of the Parish and the National Police provided training sessions to 100 people on safety measures against exposure to ash falls. The Secretariat of Risk Management took the Caravan of “Good Living” to Lasso. In Latacunga alongside the Ministry of the Environment they provided training sessions on preventive measures in the neighborhood of Romerrillo in the parish of Pastocallo. In the same Province, the Ministry of Urban Development conducted a survey and evaluated family emergency plans in communities of Joseguango Bajo and Aláquez. The objective of this work is to help reveal the actual level of affectation that people are suffering in this area and thus help develop recovery plans; likewise the Ministry of Education conducted a census in the parishes of Tanicuchi and Pastocalle in the city of Latacunga. The Municipality of Rumiñahui, Pichincha, conducted a drill in the San Fernando neighborhood. In Napo, the Secretariat of Risk Management held dialogues with the community of the parish of Talag, in the canton of Tena, in order to inform them on the location of safe zones and selfprotection guidelines in case of a violent eruption. Recommendations If you have to remove the ash from your backyard or roof it is important not to forget to use personal protective equipment, eye protection goggles and masks.
