COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 46 In Report 112 the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that the Cotopaxi Volcano continuous to have high levels of internal activity and moderate levels of external activity. During the day, tremors (vibrations of the volcanic conduit produced by the passage of fluids) were characterized by episodes lasting less than an hour, followed by quite periods. In its external manifestation this phenomenon produced a higher ash load whenever it was accompanied by an emission of steam and gas. The volcano remained covered most of Sunday. However, between the clouds, an ash column was observed reaching a maximum height of 500 meters above the crater and headed westward. Up to this hour no rains or ash fall in nearby towns were reported. Actions Carried Out The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) continues it’s on field work. This weekend it provided veterinary treatment and vitamin B to 255 animals belonging to 84 residents of the parish of Pastocalle, Sigchos, and Latacunga. It also provided training sessions on grass conservation measures to 116 residents of Latacunga and the Salcedo cantons. For the past two weeks the Technical Secretariat for Disabilities updated the georeference of people with disabilities and their families in seven rural parishes of Cotopaxi: Mulaló, Joseguango, Aláquez, Guaytacama, Tanicuchi, Pastocalle and San Buenaventura. 147 volunteers, divided into 25 teams, visited approximately 1700 households, who were trained in Inclusive Family Emergency Plans. They also helped identify households with people with disabilities with white flags as a reference for relief agencies, in case of evacuation. Next week the team of the Technical Secretariat of Disabilities will continue to carry out their work in the canton of Mejia in Pichincha. The Secretariat of Risk Management and the Governance of Cotopaxi organized a citizen awareness fair, which featured the Caravan of Good Living in the Central Plaza of the parish of St. Bonaventure. Here, about 250 people learned about the risk zones and its respective maps. In this same parish, in the neighborhood of Laigua Santo Domingo, the Secretariat provided training on safety measures to 64 people. Similar activities were carried out in the neighborhood of San Bartolo in the parishes of Toacaso and Romerrillos in Pastocalle and in Puerto Alegria and Santa Marta in San Buenaventura. In these activities 400 people participated. At this hour, in the neighborhood of San Luis of Yacupungo, in the parish of Pastocalle, an evacuation drill is being performed.
