COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 010 Today the volcanic activity of the Cotopaxi presented emissions of vapor that occasionally contained ashes, which due to the wind could present an ash fall in resident areas’ nearby. The authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination and the Secretary of Risk Management executed a flyover the Pita River (located in the north side of the volcano) and the potential risk zones. The authorities also visited the communities of Loreto del Pedregal, Santa Ana del Pedregal and San José, where they had a meeting with the Council of Emergency Operations of Mejía to revise the routes of evacuation and the location of safe zones. The Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion, the Technical Group “# 4” dedicated to give integral attention to the citizenry, and the Secretary of Risk Management informed that until this moment 96 shelters have been certified within safe zones of the provinces of Cotopaxi, Pichincha, and Napo. Experts of the Ministry of the Environment evacuated five specimens of wildlife that were in the Rescue Center Ilitio. The animals were taken in by various holding centers and zoos. The provincial, district, and parochial Councils of Emergency Operations have continued to trained the community and have held meetings with various community leaders.
