COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 024

The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that Cotopaxi volcano presented continuous gas emissions that reach up to 1,500 meters of height over the crater, heading towards the Northwest side of the volcano. Until this moment, there has been no presence of rain or decent of lahars. This morning, with the purpose to estimate the changes in the eruptive activity, experts of the Geophysics Institute executed a flyover around the crater where they identified the characteristics of the gases and measured the temperature of the volcano. On the other hand, authorities continue to put in place various preventive measures: 

To protect against ash fall, cattle (58) belonging to the people of San Agustin de Callo ( Mulaló ) , were transferred to the sector of Las Parcelas in the district of Latacunga. The National Police carried out a workshop in the district of Pujilí— continuing staff trainings on the Family and Institutional Emergency Plan. In the Province of Pichincha, civil servants of the Secretary of Risk Management carried out inspections of the vulnerable zones in the district of Rumiñahui in order to evaluate the routes of evacuation, safe zones, and shelters.

Recommendations We remind the public that the yellow alert continues to be in place. We also recommend that in each of your homes you have a first aid kit with: saline, alcohol, dressings, bandages, cotton, and medicine.
