COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 027
The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that during yesterday afternoon and evening the atmosphere surrounding the Cotopaxi volcano remained covered. However, columns of steam were present with a moderate load of ash that reached a height of up to 2,000 meters above the crater. Through satellite images recorded until early this morning it was observed that an ash cloud continues to head West/Northwest. At the moment, light ash fall has been registered over the sectors of El Chaupi, AloasĂ and central Machachi (Province of Pichincha), and El Chasqui in the Province of Cotopaxi.

Preventive Measures Yesterday night, Thursday 27 August, the local Government of Cotopaxi alongside with the Secretariat of Risk Management conducted an evacuation drill in the neighborhood of San Agustin in the canton of Latacunga. This drill, which drew more than 100 people, allowed the authorities to evaluate the response time of citizens before an eminent eruption of the volcano.
