COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 028 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that this morning there was cloudy conditions surrounding the volcano, however, continuous vapor emissions were observed with a moderate load of ash that reached a height of 1000 meters above the crater, which headed towards the west of the volcano. Until now, ash falls were registered over Pastocalle in Santa Ana, Cerro Azul, Alachua, Machachi Tambillo, Alóag and El Chaupi. In Portoviejo the Integrated Security Service ECU 911 reported slight ash falls over the Leonidas Plaza, Bahia de Caraquez, Charapotó, Pichincha and Rocafuerte in the Province of Manabi. Finally, it has been reported that the volcano’s internal activity remains high while its surface activity remains moderate. Actions Performed The Ministry of Culture and Heritage in coordination with the Ministry of Security Coordination, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, and National Culture Institute (La Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana) continue to provide training on preventive measures to preserve cultural heritage assets against a possible volcanic eruption. For example, today, residents of the Provinces of Cotopaxi, Napo and Pichincha receive this type of training ( If you want to learn more, please watch the following video on the training process http://bit.ly/1NMboJa) In the canton of Mejía, sector of El Chaupi, the Secretariat of Risk Management provided training sessions focusing on measures of self-protection against ash fall. Here, they also gave out 2000 protective masks and 3800 information pamphlets. On the other hand, in light of the beginning of school sessions in the central belt of the country (La Sierra), the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion began providing training sessions to teachers in order to help them teach their students various safety measures in case of an eventual eruption. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries is working directly with the Heads of Parishes of the canton of Sigchos, Pastocalle, and Mulaló. In Sigchos they instructed the population and provided veterinary assistance; in Pastocalle they provided food provisions for livestock; and in the neighborhood of Curiquingue and Mulaló they handed out protective masks to the residents of the central sector The Technical Secretariat of Disabilities in coordination with institutions that provide emergency response have worked on inclusive family emergency plans as well as identifying people with disabilities residing in risk zones. Recommendations We remind you that the yellow alert continues to be in place, which means we are currently in a preparation phase. Consequently, we must identify routes of evacuation, safe zones, shelters, and prepare our emergency/volcano preparedness kit or bag.
