COTOPAXI VOCANO BOLETÍN DE PRENSA 029 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported Cotopaxi volcano mantains high levels of internal activity and moderate levels of superficial activity. Since Friday afternoon until Saturday early morning, Cotopaxi remained with semi-clear conditions, however within the clouds it showed continuous gas emissions with moderate load of ash that reached a height of 1000 meters above the crater, which headed towards the west and northwest due to the wind direction. Volcanic ash fall was observed in “el Chasqui” region, from the Panamerican E35 towards the south to the region known as Romerillos. The International Airport Mariscal Sucre reports regular activities. Preventive Activities During the night of Friday, August 28th, organized citizens from Pastocalle, Mulaló and Tanicuchí, in the Cotopaxi province, along with officials from the National Secretariat of Risk Management performed an evacuation simulation. This activity allowed the authorities to evaluate the time of response to the possible volcano eruption, located on the central Andean Cordillera. In case of volcanic ash fall, people must protect mouth and nouse with a humid cloth, and avoid rubbing the eyes area. It is possible to use saline solution. If the skin shows signs of irritation apply moisturizing lotions and oils without alcohol and Vaseline. It is also advised to store drinkable water to last at least for 3 days, keeping containers well closed. Yellow alert remains active.
