COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 034
The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that the internal activity of the Cotopaxi volcano remains high while the external activity remains moderate. In the afternoon, experts of the Geophysics Institute carried out a flyover the volcano where emissions of water vapor, gas, and ash were registered. However, in comparison to other days today’s ash emissions were less and episodes of tremors were shorter. In the morning, the ash was headed towards the Northwest and West side of the volcano meanwhile, due to the wind, in the afternoon it mainly headed Northwest of the volcano. Actions Carried Out This morning authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination, the Ministry of Foreign Relations and Migration, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Secretariat of Risk Management held a meeting with the diplomatic community in order to provide them with information on the current situation of the Cotopaxi Volcano. In the afternoon, mayors, prefects, and governors of autonomous and decentralized local governments’ of the affected areas held a meeting with the authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination and the Secretariat of Risk Management. This meeting’s objective was to evaluate early warning systems and the various preventive actions being carried out by authorities. In the Province of Cotopaxi the Secretariat of Risk Management trained residents of the parish of La Matriz and San Buenaventura on preventive measures. In addition, they also distributed maps and masks to residents of the parish of Aláquez.
