COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 106 According to information provided by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University the Ministry of Security Coordination informs that in the last 12 hours the internal activity of the volcano was moderate while the external activity was low. During morning hours an emission (heading westward) of vapor and gas, with a low ash content, was observed. In the afternoon, the volcano was overcast, which impeded performing direct observations. Seismic activity remains similar to past days. Movements of gases and magma have been registered in the interior of the volcano. No rain or ash falls have been registered. Actions Carried Out Ministry of Agriculture gives out cattle feed. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries gave out 27 tons of cattle feed in the parishes of Machachi and Aloasí (canton of Mejía). This food provisions will feed approximately 1,135 cattle, which are property of 131 families. Experts also provided training sessions to 51 producers from Machachi and Aloasí. In Cotopaxi (sectors of San Pedro—Parish of Tanicuchi and Las Parcelas—Parish of Mulaló), 14 tons of cattle feed were given to 70 proprietors of 356 animals. The Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion continues to provide training session on the administration of shelters The Risk Management Unit of the Ministry provided training sessions, to administrative personnel of the District Direction of Rumiñahui, on the administration of shelters. During these sessions participants learned about how to manage a shelter, coexistence rules inside the shelter, the conformation of commissions, distribution of humanitarian aid kits, and how to utilize the space. In addition, they also learned about how to use psychosocial forms to identify the problems families during the emergency. In the canton of Rumiñahui a simulation on how to proceed if there is a change of alert from yellow to orange or red was performed. During this activity the canton’s Council of Emergency Operations held a meeting with the technical working groups to look at realistic scenarios such as the suspension of electric services. Each working group had the opportunity to develop a contingency against these emergencies. Recommendations Identify safe zones, risks zones, and shelters where vulnerable people can seek refuge.
