COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 112 Based on a report submitted by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University the Ministry of Security Coordination informs that the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of internal and external activity. Today, emissions of vapor and gas, with low ash content, could be observed. These emissions reached up to 500 meters above the crater heading westward. In the afternoon, the volcano remained overcast and its superficial activity could not be observed. In the morning, the monitor of the sector of Santa Catalina, in Cotopaxi, reported the smell of sulfur. In the afternoon, rain was registered in the sector of the volcano, however no lahars were generated. Seismic activity demonstrating the movement of magma and fluid in the interior of the volcano continue. The episodes of tremors are in accordance with the activity observed. Actions Carried Out From 7 a.m., in the plaza of San AgustĂn in Latacunaga, the Ministry of Agriculture carried out an agriculture fair, with the objectivity to reactivate the commerce in affected zones (15 to 20 traders offered their organic products).
