COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 113 Based on a report submitted by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University the Ministry of Security Coordination informs that in the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of internal and external activity. In early morning hours, through a thermal camera, emissions of gas and water vapor were observed. These emissions reached 500 meters above the crater and headed westward. Currently, the volcano remains overcast and no rain falls have been registered in the sector. The seismic activity continues to show the movement of fluid in the interior of the volcano. Episodes of tremors are in accordance with the exit of gases and ash through the crater. With these parameters, the Ministry of Security Coordination reiterates that the Yellow Alert remains in place thus the volcano can have the following manifestations in the next couple of days: -
-
-
During a Yellow Alert, ash falls, small explosions, incandescence in the crater, and secondary lahars—which do not represent a danger to residents nearby—could be present. Ash emissions could be moderate and could fall in accordance to wind patterns. In this regards, we will promptly inform citizens on its occurrences, so citizens could take the appropriate precautions. During a Yellow Alert there could be secondary lahars, provoked by rain or glacier melting. This phenomenon affects principally the zone of the Cotopaxi National Park, without endangering the population. During the rainy season, secondary lahars could be present without representing a danger to the population.
Recommendations Elaborate a family emergency plan, which should include the location of the shelters, evacuation routes, safe zones, and animal shelters. If you need information about your area seek assistance from the representatives of risk management and the municipality. The most important thing is not listen to false rumors. Remember that the official spokesman is the Ministry of Security Coordination, which works alongside the Geophysics Institute—a scientific and technical institution that continuously monitors the volcano.
