COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 120 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that in the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of external and internal activity. This morning, the weather conditions did not permit the observation of its external activity, however, between the clouds, emissions of gas—heading westward—were observed. During the afternoon, rains falls in the surrounding of the volcano caused a small lahar, which did not incur any problems, in the west flank of the volcano. The Cutuchi River increase in volume due to the rains, yet it did not cause any inconveniences. Ash falls were reported in the sectors of San Ramón, San Agustín de Callo, San Isidro, Rumipamba de Espinosas, Callo Mancheno, Santa Catalina and San Francisco of the canton of Latacunga. Seismic activity remains similar to past days: indicating movement of magma and fluids in the interior of the volcano. The tremors are congruent with the reports of ash falls detailed above. Actions Carried Out Cotopaxi Authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination presided the Council of Emergency Operations in Latacunga where a simulation took place to verify the works that have been carried out in the identified risk zones. This activity also had the participation of authorities of the Decentralized Autonomous Government and other institutions. The Secretariat of Risk Management, as part of the strengthening of capacities of the populations residing in zones of influence in Latacunga, carried out talks on safety measures, risks maps, and reducing risks. The Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion has 80 Institutional plans of risk management for the children centers of “Buen Vivir” located in Latacunga, Pujilí and Salcedo, which provide care to 3,330 children age 2 to 36 months.
