COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 122 The last report submitted by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University indicates that the Cotopaxi volcano continues to present moderate level of internal and external activity. In the morning hours, the volcano was overcast due to the weather conditions. In the afternoon, between the clouds, emissions of vapor with low to moderate ash content were observed. These emissions headed westward and reached up to 1000 meters over the crater. From the afternoon onwards rain falls in all the flanks of the volcano were registered and a lahar—which did not cause any harm—was generated in the northwest flank of the volcano. The seismic activity remained similar to past days: indicating movement of magma and fluids in the interior of the volcano. During the last hours the volcanic activity was characterized by episodes of tremors. Actions Carried Out Pichincha In the sectors of La Colina and Yaguachi (canton of Rumiñahui) works to install towers, which will disseminate the sirens of the early alert system, continue to be carried out. Cotopaxi Authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination presided over the Council of Emergency Operations of Salcedo, where a simulation was carried out. The objective of this activity was to verify the works that have been carried out in the risks zones. During this activity the authorities of the Decentralized Autonomous Government and other institutions participated. Personnel of the Hospital of Latacunga carried out a revision of the evacuation routes heading to the Espe and the Municipality of the Patronato. Recommendations Have your emergency bag ready, remember that its weight should not exceed 20 kilos, and it should contain a first aid kit and toiletries. Also include blankets and cash.
