COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 38 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informed that the Cotopaxi volcano continues with a high level of internal activity and a moderate level of external activity. This morning steams clouds accompanied by ash were registered as well as in the afternoon where an emission accompanied with moderate levels of ash, which was headed West of the volcano, reached four thousand meters above the crater Later in the day other emissions accompanied with ash were recorded, the same ones which up until now continue to produce ash falls over El Chaupi, Machachi, AloasĂ­, Tambillo, Santa Rosa, Cutuglagua (Pichincha). In addition, residents living in zones near the volcano have reported rain and smelling slight levels of sulfur. Actions Carried Out As part of the preventive measures being carried out, this Wednesday on the premises of ECU 911 Quito, a meeting of the Technical Working Group 2, corresponding to the Health sector, was held. Here, the inter-agency coordination being carried out in the Province of Pichincha in preparation of this emerging situation was reinforced by addressing various topics such as the comprehensive network of public assistance, the capacity of response by hospitals, and the actions to be done in the aftermath of an emergency. Today at 5 p.m. the Agency for Regulation and Control of Telecommunications coordinated with the three cellular operators in the country to run a test where they sent out simultaneously text messages. We also inform you that from Monday thru Sunday at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m. the radio stations from radio network of Cotopaxi will be reporting on the current situation.
