COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 48 They Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informed that the Cotopaxi Volcano continues to present a high level of internal activity and a moderate level of external activity. Meanwhile, there is a persistent signal of tremors (vibrations of the volcanic conduit produced by the passage of fluids). In the afternoon we could observe emissions of gas and steam with a low to moderate ash load that reached a height of 1000 meters above the crater heading towards the northwest of the volcano. There has not been presence of rain fall or volcano dust over nearby zones. Actions Carried Out This morning, at the premises of the Ministry of Security Coordination, authorities of this Ministry and other coordinator Ministries met to analyze and discuss possible opportunities to ask for international assistance and cooperation to strengthen the preparation efforts against potential emergencies brought on by El NiĂąo and an eventual eruption of the Cotopaxi volcano. In the premises of the Integrated Security Service ECU 911 and with the presence of the National Secretariat of Political Management the Council of Emergency Operations of Pichincha held a meeting with the objective to revise protocols related to public works, infrastructure, distribution of water, health services, comprehensive support to citizens; security assistance; productivity and livelihoods; education and culture and strategic sectors. Primary care physicians from the Ministry of Public Health socialized prevention measures to residents of PujilĂ­ in the province of Cotopaxi. A similar activity was carried out by the Secretariat of Risk Management with the help of more than 300 officers and enlisted personnel of the Air Base located in the canton of Latacunga. In coordination with the National Police and parish authorities of Joseguango Bajo, in the province of Cotopaxi, 90 workers of a broccoli processing company, ECOFROZ, participated in an evacuation drill. Recommendations The people who would be affected by a possible volcanic eruption should evacuate and find shelter in safe houses (see its definition here ).
