VOLCANO COTOPAXI PRESS RELEASE 54 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that in the last 12 hours the volcano maintains a high level of internal activity and a low level of external activity. During the morning gas emissions with a low load of ash that reached 100 meters over the crater were observed. During late afternoon a column of emissions of gas and water vapor of a white color reached approximately 1000 meters over the peak of the volcano. Both of the emissions registered throughout the day headed towards the Southwest side of the volcano. No rain or ash falls were registered over nearby zones. Actions Carried Out In Quito, experts from the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University and American volcanologist gave a lecture to media outlets on the importance of information management. In their respective lectures, the speakers stressed that education, training and participation of citizens are vital to mitigate risks. Officials from the Civil Registry of the cantons of Latacunga and Salcedo were trained in first aid techniques and received 67 (40 and 27 respectively) emergency kits/ volcano preparedness kits—which includes a mask, scarf, protective goggles and a thermal blanket. The Decentralized Autonomous Government of Salcedo in coordination with the prefectures performed an evacuation drill with the participation of 1000 people from neighborhoods of La Tebaida Norte, La Tebaida Sur, La Tebaida Primera and Segunda Etapa, Nuestro Pueblo and El Molina. Participants performed the drill accompanied by their pets and carrying their family and emergency kits. On the other hand, experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries gave out 28 tons of animal food provisions to 260 people (owners of 805 animals) of the parishes of Mulaló, Once de noviembre and Sigchos (canton of Latacunga). In addition, veterinary care was provide to 277 animals in Pastocalle and Once de noviembre, Pampas and La Matriz (canton of Sigchos). Meanwhile, 42 officials of the Health District of Pujilí-Saquisilí participated in talks that provided information on the family emergency plan. The Municipality of Rumiñahui organized preventive talks with the Association of Retired Pensioners of the Valle de Los Chillos.
