COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 60 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that in the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of internal activity and a low level of external activity. This Sunday emissions of gas and water vapor with a low ash load were observed. The plume headed West and Northwest of the volcano reaching 500 meters over the crater. No ash or rain fall were reported in the zones nearby. It is important to remember that the ash falls of previous day could be stirred up into the air by wind. Actions Carried Out The Ministry of Security Coordination, the Ministry of Public Health, the Secretariat or Risk Management, and the Geophysics Institute participated in a town meeting in Guamani in the South of Quito. The objective of the meeting was to inform the citizenry of the actions being carried out. The canton of RumiĂąahui advances in the training process and talks to the citizenry. On Sunday, more than 100 people of the complex of La Victoria, Parques de Granados, sector of La Carolina, employees of the company Hormigones del Valle, Franz Viegener and Hacienda Capelo received lectures about contingency measures, Family Disaster Plans and self-protection. In the neighborhood of San JosĂŠ El Ejido, canton of Latacunga, the Secretariat of Risk Management continued the training process on prevention to 50 people. Recommendations We remind you that the yellow alert continues to be in place and has not changed. On handling the ash that fell on roofs and exterior of the house we advise you to coordinate the clean-up with neighbors to avoid contaminating others; use a shovel to remove thick volumes of volcanic ash or a stiff broom to remove smaller amounts. Also, follow the instructions of the authorities regarding the use of water during the tasks. Remember to not wet the ash that is located in the roofs as water increases the weight of the ash and could risk a collapse of the roof. Do not sweep ash dry instead wet it slightly to prevent the ash from spreading. Finally, be careful when cleaning stairs and ceilings as it can tmake the floor slippery.
