COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 62 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reports that the Cotopaxi volcano continues in its state of eruption with a moderate level of internal activity and low level of external activity. During the last 12 hours the atmosphere surrounding the volcano was clear and thus emissions of vapor and gas with a low ash load were observed. These emissions reached up to 500 meters over the crater and headed West and Northwest side of the volcano. The seismic events continue, however no rain fall has been reported in the sector. The ash in the environment is due the ash falls of past days which have been stirred up into the air due to the wind. Actions Carried Out The Secretariat of Risk Management participated in a drill of the Council of Emergency Operations of the Province of Cotopaxi with the objective to evaluate response times in case of increased volcanic activity. In the Province of Cotopaxi evacuations drills continue to be performed every day. Today more than 500 people of the neighborhoods of La Delicia, the parish center of Panzaleo (in the canton of Salcedo), participated in a drill organized by the Secretariat, the Political Directorship, and the Decentralized Autonomous Government. Training sessions and talks have also been carried out. In the parish of Zumbahua in the canton of Pujilí officials of the Head of the Parish attended citizen concerns regarding ash falls. In the canton of Rumiñahui (Pichincha) students and staff from the Educational Unit of Giovanni Farina participate in a new evacuation drill with the objective to improve reactions times in the case of an orange alert. Other educational institutions, like the Superior Institute of Rumiñahui—which is certified as a shelter for the canton—joined in preventive talks with the participations of professors. Companies like CONVERSA (in the parish of Cotogchoa), Baterías Ecuador (in the sector of El Inga), Rey Leche (in San Nicolás) were trained on risks and preventions.
