COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 63 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reported that the Cotopaxi volcano remains in its active eruptive state with a moderate level of internal activity and a low level of external activity—through satellite images it was observed that the plume of ash headed westward. This morning the atmosphere surrounding the volcano was clear and emissions of vapor with low ash content were observed. These emissions reach 500 meters above the crate and headed westward. We advise that the wind can stir up accumulated ash into the air as well as change the direction of the ash plume. No rain falls have been registered in the sector. Actions Carried Out Yesterday from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. a drill of the Council of Emergency Operations of Cotopaxi took place. During this activity all representative of the technical working groups’ participated and local authorities continued to revise the contingency plans. Through the coordinated efforts between the Secretariat of Risks Management, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock , Aquaculture and Fisheries an inter-institutional meeting was held on the subject of preventive measures, here, 30 people residing in the neighborhoods of La Libertad of the parish Once de Noviembre (canton of Latacunga) also participated. In the neighborhood of San Francisco (parish of Joseguango Bajo/canton of Latacunga) an evacuation drill was performed with the participation of 45 people. The drill was coordinated by the Secretariat of Risk Management, the National Police, the Armed Forces – Brigade Patria, and local authorities. Recommendations If there are ash falls due to the volcanic activity we advise that if you are driving you stop and park off the road.
