COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 74 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reports that in the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of internal activity and a low level of external activity. During the afternoon the atmosphere surrounding the volcano was cloudy, however, from 5 p.m. forward emissions of vapor and ash were observed. These emissions headed westward. Actions Carried Out This morning various public institutions carried out actions to benefit residents of risks zones. In Mulaló (Cotopaxi) officials of the Ministry of Agriculture accompanied more than 200 people to a special cattle sale, the objective of this activity was to avoid fraud or illegal payments. In addition, in the parish of Aláquez (Latacunga) 21 people of the neighborhood of Chaguana Alto and Bajo received training on how to apply the family plan, safety measures, and preparation of the emergency kit bag. 42 masks, maps, and guides on how to use contingency plans were given out with participation of local authorities and official of public institutions. In Pichincha escape routes were evaluated and family emergency plans were elaborated to benefit residents of the sector of Luis Cordero de Rumiñahui. On the other hand, families of the sector of San Nicolás received a talk on how respond to an eventual increase of volcanic activity.
