COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 81 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that during the last 12 hours the internal activity of the Cotopaxi remains moderate while the external low. During the night, through thermal cameras, emissions of vapor, gas, and ash were observed. These emissions reached 1000 meters over the crater and headed toward the south and southwest of the volcano. This morning continuous emissions were detected. These emissions were of vapor and of low ash content, reaching 1000 meters over the crater. The seismic activity indicates de movement of magma in the interior of the volcano and gas through the volcanic duct. No rain or ash falls were registered over nearby zones. Actions Carried Out Last night an important activity was carried out in order to time the response capacity of the citizenry in case of an emergency. Cotopaxi: Approximately 2000 residents of the neighborhoods of Tandaliví Bajo, Chaguana Bajo, Laigua de Bellavista, Laigua de Maldonado, Laigua de Vargas, Laigua Simón Rodríguez and Chillos participated in a massive drill performed by the Council of Emergency Operations, the Secretariat of Risk Management, and the head of the parish. During this activity, various particularities that could delay the mobilization in case of a change of alert were identified (ex. The lack of knowledge or organization). The mobilization between neighborhoods and safety zones Chaguana Alto, Tandaliví Alto, San Antonio and stadium of the Liga Parroquial Aláquez) was 30 minutes. The results, observations, and recommendations will be given from this Thursday onwards. In addition other drills will take place until the response time will be down to 25 minutes.
