COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 83 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that during the last 12 hours the internal activity of the Cotopaxi remains moderate while the external low. During the night emissions of gas, vapor, and ash were observed. These emissions reached 800 meters above the crater and headed westward. In the morning, the emissions reached 100 meters above the crater and headed westward. The seismic activity indicates the movement of fluid inside the volcano. No rain or ash falls were registered in zones nearby. Actions Carried Out This Friday 25 radios will be given out to community leaders and presidents of neighborhoods north of Cotopaxi. In addition, other 6 radios will be given in the south of Pichincha. These equipment will connected to the system Cotopaxi: 46 officials of the Ministry of Social and Economic Inclusion were provided training on administration of shelters. They will be in charge of the developing strategies to avoid contamination, spread of diseases that can arise during an emergency. 3,000 residents of Salcedo participated in community work carried out by the Secretariat of Risk Management, the Governorship of Cotopaxi and the local government. This activity had the objective to sensitize the community on the risks of the volcano. Recommendations If the authorities announce of an eventual presence of lahars, heading towards the risks zones, do not remain in low parts; here the best you can do is walk to high points (hills or mountains).
