COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 92 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that during the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano continues with a moderate internal activity and a low level of external activity. During this period, the volcano presented emissions of vapor and gases, with a low ash content, which reached up to 1500 meters above the crater. There was moments where a bluish color could be seen during the emissions, this is due to small Sulphur components that arise (in aerosol form). This type of phenomenon has also been observed in other volcanoes. During the afternoon, the zones near the volcano remained overcast, thus it did not allow the visualization of the external activity. The seismic activity remained similar to past days and there is still signals of magma and fluid movement in the interior of the volcano. No rain falls have been registered in the sector up until this press release. Activities Carried Out In Pichincha: In the afternoon, authorities of the Ministry of Security Coordination and the Decentralized Autonomous Government of the canton of Rumiñahui participated in a town hall meeting in the sector of Selva Alegre. Here, the residents of the zone and nearby neighborhoods voiced their unrest and queries, which were later promptly answered. The Decentralized Autonomous Government of the Metropolitan District of Quito delivered the first phase of the new early alert system, which will provide an opportune response in case there needs to be an evacuation, of the zones near the rivers of the Valess de Los Chillo and Tumbaco, due to a potential presence of lahars. In Cotopaxi: The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy established a contingency plan against a possible affectation of the electric infrastructure. In this regards, various actions have been carried out such as: the mobilization of the latest technology to clean up substations and transmissions lines, works have performed on the lines of Mulaló – Vicentina and the substation of Mulaló, and new thermic generators have been acquired in order re-establish the service in possible affected zones.
