COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 94 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informs that during the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano continues to present a moderate level of internal activity and low level of external activity. In this period, there was emissions of vapor and gases with a low ash content that reached 1000 meters above the crater and headed westward. Approximately at 12:30 a signal indicating a small lahar (located in the north side of volcano and which did not reach the Pita river) was registered. Later on, a second signal, with the same characteristics, was registered. Both lahars are a secondary effect of the strong rains registered over the volcano and which did not affect residential zones. The seismic activity remains within in similar levels as past days and signals of movement of magma and fluids in the interior of the volcano have been registered. Rains with lighting and thunder has been reported in the Southwest sector and in addition in some zones south and north of the volcano a smell of Sulphur has been reported. Actions Carried Out In Pichincha: This morning updates about the contingency plans that have been developed within risks zones were socialized (with the participation of: Ministry of Security Coordination, Mayors of Quito, MejĂa, RumiĂąahui, the prefect of Pichincha, representatives of the Secretariat of Risks Management, Director of the Geophysics Institute, and authorities of the ECU 911).
