COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 99 According to the information provided by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University, the Ministry of Security Coordination informs that during the last 12 hours the internal activity of the volcano was moderate while the external activity was low. Last night, continuous emissions of water vapor, with low ash content, were reported. These emissions reached 2000 meters above the crater and headed between east and northeast of the volcano. In the sectors of AlangasĂ, La Armenia, Valle de los Chillos and in the sectors south of the volcano the smell of sulfur was reported. The Geophysics Institute reported that since yesterday at 7 p.m. a bright light was observed in the crater due to the expulsion of gases. This morning the atmosphere surrounding the volcano remains clear, which has permitted the observation of columns of water vapor reaching up to 2000 meters above the crater and heading eastward. No rain falls have been registered in the sector. The seismic measurements indicated that there is a movement of magma and fluid in the interior of the volcano. Recommendations If it is night time and you are going to sleep you should have your emergency bag, which you prepared in advance, handy. To avoid accidents close gas ducts and make sure your family members know where they can go in case of an evacuation. Remember these recommendations have the objective to protect you and your family. It is important that you participate in the training sessions provided by the different institutions.
