COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 026 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University reports that the volcano continues in its eruptive state with continuous gas emissions, containing moderate ashes, which have reach a height up to 2km and headed towards the West and Northwest side of the volcano. It maintains a high level of internal activity (in regards to the quantity and type gases, seismic activity, and deformation. Meanwhile, there is a moderate level of surface activity (columns of gases, ash and explosions). This morning, ash falls were registered, of a thin grey color, over La Concordia and Puerto Limon (Province of Santo Domingo de los TsĂĄchilas) and San Jacinto (Manabi); while the smell of sulfur was reported in the parish of AmaguaĂąa (Canton Quito). During the afternoon ash falls were registered over the cantons of Quevedo, Mocache and Buena Fe (Province of Los Rios). The Secretariat of Risk Management also continues to provide training to the population. In the parishes of Talag and Puerto Misahualli, Province of Napo, information was given to citizens on self-protection measures, location of safe zones, shelters and evacuation routes.

Other Activities The local Government of Cotopaxi trained community of Sigchos on preventive measures against ash fall.

The Head of the parish of Joseguango alongside the National Police conducted an evacuation drill in the floriculture of Agrogana. The Head of the parish of Belisario Quevedo, in coordination with the Secretariat of Risk Management trained residents of this sector and of the parish of El Chaupi on the measures that people should take in case of ash falls. At 7pm today the Secretariat of Risk Management and the local Government of Cotopaxi have scheduled an evacuation drill of the neighborhood of San Agustin in Latacunga. Recommendations It is important to remember that the yellow alert continues to be in place and that you must be alert to the information provided by the official channels. We also recommended to citizens that if you are affected by ash emissions you must keep doors, windows, and all kinds of open ventilations closed in order to prevent ash entry to your homes. If necessary, seal with duct tape or place wet towels on small openings.
