Public Space Design
Renderings of re-designed piazzas. Public spaces and their uses were of major focus over a summer study abroad in Cortona, Italy. Public spaces are the backbone of cities and must be beautiful, versitile and designed at a human scale.
Piazza Piscaia (Left) An intimate Italian neighborhood park space. Water features, shade and stairs were added to make the space more comfortable and interactive. Piazza Garibaldi (Right) A central piazza welcoming people to the village and hosting community events. The design orients around a breathtaking view enjoyed by tourists, students and locals alike. Pockets of space and clear walkways allow these groups of people to coexist without friction. 4
Over a period of several days, this piazza was observed to determine what user’s needs were and how to design for them. 5

Art is the language of ideas.

Nature is complex. Landscapes are intricate compositions made from millions of individual life forms and natural processes. Inspiration can be found in the details. Landscape are as diverse as they are complex. Sketching or painting them (B,C,D,H) is a practice of presence and appreciation. These pen and watercolor drawings (A,E) are explorations of biodiversity.
