The broadband signal is coming from Chattanooga's Electric Power Board [EPB], but the Athens utility extended its lines into Ooltewah to connect with the Chattanooga system. There is a steady 1 gigabyte signal purchased by AUB on the system and may be increased up to ten gigabytes, if necessary.

Athens Utilities Board to Offer Fiber-optic Internet Athens, TN (May) Athens Utilities Board is ready to offer fiber-optic broadband Internet service to area businesses and industries. AUB is leasing fiber between Athens and Ooltewah through Volunteer Energy Cooperative [VEC].

Cleveland, TN (May) Congratulations to Cleveland Utilities for being one of the six recipients to receive one of the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Awards for marketplace ethics. The Better Business Bureau [BBB] in Southeast TN and Northwest GA awarded the business for “ethical, fair and honorable business practices.”

New Casino in Cherokee County, NC will Bring Hundreds of Jobs to Area Murphy, NC (June) Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino is a big development for a small town, just 90 minutes from Chattanooga. The casino is set to bring about 800 jobs and a 32 to 39 million dollar payroll to the area. The casino is set to open in September.

SEIDA Staff Attends SEUS in Canada (June 28-30) SEIDA staff, McMinn County government officials and TNECD delegates attended the Southeastern United States – Canadian Provinces Alliance (SEUS-CP) conference in Prince Edward Island, Canada. SEUS-CP is a strategic partnership between states in the southeastern United States and member provinces from Canada. Member states include Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Member provinces include Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Québec. The Alliance was established in November 2007 at the Montreal meeting. The alliance works to promote trade and investment opportunities between and among its member states and provinces.
