PHOTOGRAPHERS AND THEIR WORK

“Painting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.. - Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter, and the leading force behind the abstract expressionist movement in the art world. By the mid 1940s, Jackson Pollock introduced his famous ‘drip paintings’ most of his canvases were either set on the floor, or laid out against a wall, rather than being fixed to an easel. From there, he used a style where he would allow the paint to drip from the paint can. Instead of using the traditional paint brush, he would add depth to his images using knives, trowels, or sticks. Jackson Pollock’s work and techniques are quite different. The way he uses the dripping technique and does not follow the conventional way of paintings is what I like the most about his paintings. He uses bright as well as dark colours and combines both in his paintings. His paintings are always abstract but show a lot of expressions and emotions.

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. - Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a unique artist. He was famed for his bold, dramatic brush strokes which expressed emotion and added a feeling of movement to his works. He was a famous adherent to the popular painting technique known as impasto, which involves the thick laying down of paint on a particular segment of the canvas. This technique makes brushstrokes more visible and, once the paint has dried, adds an extra element of texture. Vincent was obsessed with flowers specially Sunflowers. His series of Sunflower paintings are Unbelievable. He was always inspired by light and bright colours and this what I have used for my prints also. Van Gogh developed a style that was unique to his paintings. Van Gogh was a master at expressing emotion through the use of creative colour combinations and changes to the shape of the object or person.

“India is very colourful country and why not let that reflect in my paintings?” -S.H. Raza

Sayed Haider Raza is one of the most prominent and ground breaking Indian painters. During his training in France, Raza experimented with a variety of Modernist styles through landscape painting inspired by geometric abstraction. In 1970, Raza began to paint purely geometric forms, particularly the circle and the dot, which he likened to the idea of the bindu. His ‘bindus’ (dot) and other patterns pertaining to the cycle of life, landscapes and tantric elements are his unique signature style. Seeing Raza’s work, the geometic patterns and shapes he uses and bright colours used by him is what inspired me. Using geometry he has tried to depict landscapes. His paintings looks very simple but are very complex. Using the colours and pattern I developed my prints.

“Each colour lives by its mysterious life.” - Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky is best known for his work as an abstract painter. He is a Russian abstract painter, and also did work as an art theorist, and was credited with being the first artist to create the first purely abstract piece of art. Wassily Kandinsky spent several years creating abstract work, and worked using deep colors and worked on his form, observing not only his work, but that of other artists as well. It was during this time that he noted the effects of color, on the senses, as well as on the piece as a whole. The elements I picked up for the print was the shapes and objects he uses and the colour palette he works with.

“Everything that is India, Everything that is 21st Century and Everything that is Art”” - Devajyoti Ray

Devajyoti Ray’s work is the amalgamation of offbeat colours, simple geometric shapes and often meaningless renderings that together synergies into a smooth comprehensible reality and an outstanding composition which makes his work so special. Ray paints usually in acrylic. Devajyoti ray had no formal training in art, his techniques are largely self developed. He uses large areas of flat colours, offbeat shapes and but makes the paintings look realistic and comprehendible. Devajyoti Ray mostly paints scenes of everyday life with a touch of subtle irony. His paintings do not make any statement. Seeing his work, the colours he used, how he has used everyday life secenaries is what even I have picked up for my prints I have made. I have made prints using Images shot by me which we see in our daily life.

“Art is not made for anybody and at the same time, for everybody. - Piet Mondrian

In the 1920s, Mondrian began to create the definitive abstract paintings for which he is best known. He limited his palette to white, black, gray, and the three primary colors, with the composition constructed from thick, black horizontal and vertical lines that delineated the outlines of the various rectangles of color or reserve. The assorted blocks of color and lines of differing width create rhythms that ebb and flow across the surface of the canvas, echoing the varied rhythm of modern life. The composition is asymmetrical, as in all of his mature paintings, with one large dominant block of color, here red, balanced by distribution of the smaller blocks of yellow, blue gray, and white around it. As he usually works with only three primary colours and black. Similarly using those colours I have developed the prints and made a Composition out of it.
