It’s not every day that someone walks into your Design Center five minutes before closing and says, “Will you design my new house?” Even though he hadn’t met the family or seen the home, Ethan Allen designer Brian Nelson was up for the challenge.

“When a client gives me a lot of creative freedom, I start with a presentation that reflects the way I’d want to live in their space,” Brian explained. He turned to some elements that had been inspiring him lately: a blue and gold floral fabric, and blue decorative accents.
He also leaned into a combination of gray wood finishes with warm metal tones, a mix he called “not too traditional, but not cold modern.” He designed every room down to the last detail, even to custom pillows and bedding, and custom drapery and window valances—and when he presented his plans to the client and his wife, the result was a win. “They loved them!”
