Embracing Nature as the Ultimate Luxury in HoteliersGuild’s
DEEPERLUXURY EcoLuxNature Chapter
Rediscovering the Magic of Corippo: A Vision for Sustainable Luxury
I fell in love with Val Verzasca after countless summer days spent basking in its natural wellness spa along the river, and savoring its natural jacuzzis. About two years ago, I stumbled upon the Corippo Albergo Diffuso project, recently decided to reconnect and create this new chapter for EcoLuxNature projects. We are now thrilled to collaborate with the Corippo Foundation 1975 and its management to elevate this unique initiative to the next level.
We are now thrilled to collaborate with the Corippo Foundation 1975 and its management to elevate this unique initiative. Following the recent visit by our esteemed HoteliersGuild member and SIRIUSACADEMYAWARD laureate Alberto Apostoli, alongside the Guild’s Vice-Chairman Philippe Clarinval, we are developing an innovative ‘Spa Diffuso’ concept with additional branded suites. Alberto and the Guild’s pro-bono contributions exemplify our commitment to this vision.
This project aims to harmonize luxury with sustainability, embracing the village’s and its remaining inhabitants rich heritage while offering a unique wellness experience. Together with the Foundation, the dedicated management family and all stakeholders, the concept envisions to transform Corippo into a beacon of sustainable tourism, showcasing the perfect blend of nature, culture, and luxury - a most exiting legacy project proposal in the true spirit of HoteliersGuild, supported by the HoteliersGuild Academy of Hospitality Arts and some of the most renowned expert hospitality leaders around the world.

Alberto Apostoli: THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
When discussing sustainable architecture and design, I believe it’s essential to make an initial distinction: designing with the sole driver of ecosystem preservation or expanding the concept of sustainability to consider not only selected raw materials, the production chain, energy and resource efficiency, but also how a specific structure or product will interact with the environment on multiple levels.
For me, sustainability also means a project’s ability to connect with the essence of its location, creating links to ancestral traditions and local customs. Only then a resort, wellness center, or a spa can truly exist in harmony with the landscape and social environment, respecting and thus embodying sustainability. Following this philosophy, I envision the future of the industry relying on biocompatible wellness centers that harmonize with the natural morphology of the land and utilize renewable energy sources.
The concept and design of Preistoriche Green Lodges exemplify this approach. The lodge fully respects the context of Parco Terme Preistoriche Resort & Spa in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, integrating seamlessly with its ancient trees through wooden stilts. It serves as a manifesto for biophilic architecture principles, emphasizing human adaptation to the natural world (not the opposite), a complete fusion between built structures and the existing ecosystem. Naturally, any truly sustainable project must maintain coherence at every depth. Preistoriche Green Lodge achieves zero emissions, employs ecofriendly materials, and directly heats using thermal water. Its interior features reclaimed and recycled materials, eco-sustainable yarns, and cellulose-based coatings from FSC-certified sources.
Similarly, for Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda in Brescia, Italy, which I restyled in 2022, a similar approach was taken. Environmental and territorial context informed sustainable choices related to the resort’s energy supply. Biomass systems, cogeneration, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater collection tanks contribute to water conservation. The five-star resort blends seamlessly into the local landscape, minimizing visual impact through thoughtful architectural configuration and natural materials.
To make this holistic design approach which addresses multiple layers and encompasses all relevant variables, the preferred method for new projects, we must deepen our understanding of biotourism fundamentals. Personally, I summarize it as seeking a connection with the local territory and culture in every chosen destination. This involves balance with the surrounding environment, respect for landscape and natural peculiarities, and a proactive commitment to preserving a place’s cultural heritage. Ultimately, it means transforming architectural structures from mere shells into symbolic spaces."
To translate these principles into concrete design standards and to support spas and wellness centers in their sustainable transformation, I was among the co-founders of the Sustainable SPA Association (based in the United Kingdom but with international reach). Since 2020, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a virtuous ranking of facilities, evaluating their green coefficient in terms of resource consumption, use of bioenergy, and ecofriendly products, including during the treatment phase. Additionally, I am a member of HoteliersGuild, an international network actively shaping a new leadership class—innovative thinkers and enlightened designers—for the hospitality industry. Our approach emphasizes innovative luxury that aligns with sustainability

THE VILLAGEDESERTED THEN
A Glimpse into Switzerland’s Past
Corippo, a Swiss commune in the canton of Ticino, is perched on a steep promontory in the Verzasca Valley. Established as an independent commune in 1822, Corippo retains its rugged and primitive charm, reflecting a rural way of life that dates back over 700 years. For centuries, the locals sustained themselves through agriculture. In 1850, the population
peaked at 315 inhabitants. However, by 1950, due to emigration to California and Australia, the village’s population dwindled to just 70. Today, only 11 inhabitants remain. Starting from April 2021, Corippo has become part of the new Verzasca municipality.

Rediscovering the Heartbeat of Corippo: An Emotional Revival
The echoes of Corippo’s past still linger in the minds of its older inhabitants, who fondly remember names like Angiolina, Martino, Luigino, and Siro. Over 50 years have passed since these cherished souls left their homes, often in haste, leaving kitchens untidy and memories scattered like fragments of a bygone era. Yet, the essence of their lives and the vibrancy they brought to the village have not faded into oblivion.
In a heartfelt tribute to Corippo’s rich heritage, their stories are now immortalized in the new Albergo Diffuso— an innovative hotel concept that breathes life back into the village by transforming these historical homes into unique guest accommodations.
Each room with more to come is named after the village’s former residents, ensuring their legacy endures within the very walls they once called home.
It's been a poignant moment when the Albergo Diffuso in Corippo opened its doors some time ago, embracing a concept that has flourished in Italy. It aims to rejuvenate this picturesque village, weaving the threads of past and present to create a tapestry of communal life, culture, and hospitality. This revival not only preserves the memories of those who once animated Corippo but also infuses the village with a renewed spirit, inviting guests to experience its timeless charm and history.
