Embracing Nature as the Ultimate Luxury in HoteliersGuild’s
DEEPERLUXURY EcoLuxNature Chapter
In the modern luxury landscape, there’s a burgeoning realization that true opulence isn’t defined by extravagance but by a profound connection to the natural world. The new chapter of HoteliersGuild, DEEPERLUXURY, with the subtitle EcoLuxNature, embodies this shift, focusing on NATURE as the ultimate luxury. At HoteliersGuild, our mission of “giving back to the industry” takes on new meaning as we champion this concept, integrating nature’s raw beauty into the essence of high-end hospitality.
Nature:
The Pinnacle of Luxury
Imagine waking up to the serene sounds of a babbling brook, savoring a meal made from fresh, local produce, or gazing at a night sky unmarred by city lights. These are the experiences that EcoLuxNature aims to bring to the forefront. In a world increasingly dominated by artificiality and excess, the simplicity and majesty of nature offer a profound, unspoiled luxury. We at HoteliersGuild are committed to curating experiences that celebrate this natural luxury, recognizing that nature’s wonders far surpass the most elaborate manmade creations.
Reimagining Luxury through Nature
At the heart of EcoLuxNature is the belief that luxury should be immersive, authentic, and respectful of its surroundings. This initiative reimagines traditional luxury by placing nature at its core—where the grandeur lies not in ornate fixtures but in the untouched splendor of the environment. Our goal is to redefine the luxury experience by offering guests a return to nature, where they can reconnect with the earth and find true rejuvenation.
This new chapter of HoteliersGuild, EcoLuxNature, is intended to bridge the gap between our Grand Hôtel and ultimate deluxe hotel members and the ultimate eco retreats, which we
attach the same importance to. Nature, sustainable architecture and design, upcycling, and regional cuisine take center stage here, and the mostly independent operator colleagues are supported by our academy experts.
The properties under EcoLuxNature are meticulously designed to harmonize with their natural settings. From eco-conscious retreats nestled in lush forests to secluded lodges overlooking pristine landscapes, each project reflects our commitment to sustainability and ecological balance. These spaces provide a sanctuary where guests can experience the tranquility and grandeur of nature without compromising on comfort or elegance.
Preserving Heritage, Promoting Sustainability
EcoLuxNature is more than just a celebration of nature—it’s a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism. Our projects honor local traditions and utilize eco-friendly practices, ensuring that every initiative contributes positively to the environment and the community.
For instance, our collaboration with the Corippo Foundation exemplifies this philosophy. By transforming Switzerland’s smallest village into an Albergo Diffuso, they'r preserving its rich heritage while breathing new life into its historical structures. This model not only revitalizes Corippo but also showcases how heritage and modern sustainability can create a unique, luxurious experience. We are excited and look forward to present our first project mid July.
Nature as the Ultimate Luxury
In the pursuit of luxury, nothing compares to the raw elegance of nature. The clean air, the rustle of leaves in a quiet forest, the breathtaking vistas of untouched landscapes—these are the true luxuries that EcoLuxNature aims to celebrate. By focusing on nature as the pinnacle of luxury, we offer guests experiences that are not just indulgent but deeply enriching and restorative.
This focus aligns seamlessly with our mission of “giving back to the industry.” By championing nature as the ultimate luxury, we promote practices that are sustainable, responsible, and deeply connected to the essence of the environment. Our efforts are designed to ensure that future generations can also enjoy these natural luxuries, fostering a legacy of respect and stewardship for the natural world.
A Call to Rediscover Luxury
As we advance the EcoLuxNature chapter of DEEPERLUXURY, we invite our members, partners, and the broader hospitality community to join us in this journey. Let’s redefine what it means to experience luxury by embracing the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature. Together, we can create spaces where the natural world is the star, offering guests a chance to rediscover the true meaning of luxury.
In embracing nature as the ultimate luxury, we are not just transforming hospitality; we are pioneering a path towards a more sustainable, harmonious relationship with our planet. Join us as we celebrate nature’s unparalleled beauty and set a new standard for ecoluxurious, responsible travel.

Vision & Mission
breathtaking Khao Yai National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—this resort isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a nostalgic journey that offers travellers an unforgettable escape.
Spanning 100 acres of verdant paradise, the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort is a testament to Bensley’s genius. Amidst abundant trees and serene lakes, guests are treated to a host of enriching experiences, each touchpoint meticulously crafted to perfection. Bensley proves once again that when it comes to DEEPERLUXURY and innovative upcycling, he’s the conductor of an unparalleled hospitality experience.
The Power of DEEPERLUXURY
Sustainability is not just a buzzword for Bill Bensley; it’s the bedrock of his creative practice, influencing every decision he makes. At the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort, Bensley’s commitment to ecoconscious design shines brightly. “Khao Yai is just beginning to bloom, attracting visitors from far and wide,” Bensley notes. “Our focus on sustainability and conservation guided us to build according to the
principles in my white paper, ensuring we didn’t disrupt this naturally wooded haven.”
“This project is groundbreaking as it’s the first time a major hotel operator has embraced upcycling to this extent. I hope it sets a precedent, encouraging others to adopt significant upcycling and recycling practices, adding immense appeal and character to any development,” he adds.
A TRAIN LOST in THE JUNGLE
What were some of the biggest challenges you were faced with to convert these carriages into fullyfunctional luxury suites?
“
Well... "fully-functional luxury suites" are about space for the most part, and these carriages are only 2.5 metres wide. So, our best suites are 2.5m x 30m... that was a challenge!

I
have always been a fan of upcycling and recycling - so repurposing train carriages was a dream come true. We found them all over Thailand. A couple of them had been sitting in a field for perhaps 50 years and, like Angkor Wat, Ficus trees had taken root on the roof and almost completely enveloped the carriage. While we had to remove much of the trees to pry the trains out of the field, I kept some of the huge root system as there is a certain beauty that comes with the idea of returning to Mother Earth.

What came first; the location in Khao Yai, or the train carriages?
“
The location - a stunning piece of land on the edge of Thailand’s most important forested national park. As a lover of nature and a conservationist it is always a thrill to work on sites like thisand a responsibility to do as little damage as possible. We had actually designed a complete hotel scheme when I was inspired by the architecture of a local King Rama V era railway station… I scrapped what we had and redesigned the whole thing, bringing in the idea of upcycling train carriages to really tell the story of an old station in Khao Yai.

A Glimpse into Switzerland’s Past
Corippo, a Swiss commune in the canton of Ticino, is perched on a steep promontory in the Verzasca Valley. Established as an independent commune in 1822, Corippo retains its rugged and primitive charm, reflecting a rural way of life that dates back over 700 years. For centuries, the locals sustained themselves through agriculture. In 1850, the population
peaked at 315 inhabitants. However, by 1950, due to emigration to California and Australia, the village’s population dwindled to just 70. Today, only 11 inhabitants remain. Starting from April 2021, Corippo has become part of the new Verzasca municipality.

Rediscovering the Heartbeat of Corippo: An Emotional Revival
The echoes of Corippo’s past still linger in the minds of its older inhabitants, who fondly remember names like Angiolina, Martino, Luigino, and Siro. Over 50 years have passed since these cherished souls left their homes, often in haste, leaving kitchens untidy and memories scattered like fragments of a bygone era. Yet, the essence of their lives and the vibrancy they brought to the village have not faded into oblivion.
In a heartfelt tribute to Corippo’s rich heritage, their stories are now immortalized in the new Albergo Diffuso— an innovative hotel concept that breathes life back into the village by transforming these historical homes into unique guest accommodations.
Each room with more to come is named after the village’s former residents, ensuring their legacy endures within the very walls they once called home.
It's been a poignant moment when the Albergo Diffuso in Corippo opened its doors some time ago, embracing a concept that has flourished in Italy. It aims to rejuvenate this picturesque village, weaving the threads of past and present to create a tapestry of communal life, culture, and hospitality. This revival not only preserves the memories of those who once animated Corippo but also infuses the village with a renewed spirit, inviting guests to experience its timeless charm and history.

Alberto Apostoli: THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
When discussing sustainable architecture and design, I believe it’s essential to make an initial distinction: designing with the sole driver of ecosystem preservation or expanding the concept of sustainability to consider not only selected raw materials, the production chain, energy and resource efficiency, but also how a specific structure or product will interact with the environment on multiple levels.
For me, sustainability also means a project’s ability to connect with the essence of its location, creating links to ancestral traditions and local customs. Only then a resort, wellness center, or a spa can truly exist in harmony with the landscape and social environment, respecting and thus embodying sustainability. Following this philosophy, I envision the future of the industry relying on biocompatible wellness centers that harmonize with the natural morphology of the land and utilize renewable energy sources.
The concept and design of Preistoriche Green Lodges exemplify this approach. The lodge fully respects the context of Parco Terme Preistoriche Resort & Spa in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, integrating seamlessly with its ancient trees through wooden stilts. It serves as a manifesto for biophilic architecture principles, emphasizing human adaptation to the natural world (not the opposite), a complete fusion between built structures and the existing ecosystem. Naturally, any truly sustainable project must maintain coherence at every depth. Preistoriche Green Lodge achieves zero emissions, employs ecofriendly materials, and directly heats using thermal water. Its interior features reclaimed and recycled materials, eco-sustainable yarns, and cellulose-based coatings from FSC-certified sources.
Similarly, for Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda in Brescia, Italy, which I restyled in 2022, a similar approach was taken. Environmental and territorial context informed sustainable choices related to the resort’s energy supply. Biomass systems, cogeneration, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater collection tanks contribute to water conservation. The five-star resort blends seamlessly into the local landscape, minimizing visual impact through thoughtful architectural configuration and natural materials.
To make this holistic design approach which addresses multiple layers and encompasses all relevant variables, the preferred method for new projects, we must deepen our understanding of biotourism fundamentals. Personally, I summarize it as seeking a connection with the local territory and culture in every chosen destination. This involves balance with the surrounding environment, respect for landscape and natural peculiarities, and a proactive commitment to preserving a place’s cultural heritage. Ultimately, it means transforming architectural structures from mere shells into symbolic spaces."
To translate these principles into concrete design standards and to support spas and wellness centers in their sustainable transformation, I was among the co-founders of the Sustainable SPA Association (based in the United Kingdom but with international reach). Since 2020, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a virtuous ranking of facilities, evaluating their green coefficient in terms of resource consumption, use of bioenergy, and ecofriendly products, including during the treatment phase. Additionally, I am a member of HoteliersGuild, an international network actively shaping a new leadership class—innovative thinkers and enlightened designers—for the hospitality industry. Our approach emphasizes innovative luxury that aligns with sustainability
