HoteliersGuild LeadingHôtelières Chapter Introductory overview Updated 4 March 2021
LeadingHôtelières Mission The mission of LeadingHôtelières Chapter of the HoteliersGuild is to accelerate gender equality in the hotel sector. Within the overall mission there will be a yearly focus. The focus for Year one (2021) is: •
Launching with SDG5 and in parIcular how flexible working structures can aid female progression in senior roles
LeadingHôtelières Chapter: Code of Ethics The Ethical Code is designed to reaffirm and promote LeadingHôtelières’ mission and values of inclusion, open dialogue, respect and collaboraIon, as the change effected through our work is set to benefit all, and not just one secIon of society. The Code serves as a guideline for all members of this chapter in their pracIce to introduce and integrate gender equality in the areas of development of tasks, manuals and white papers to be used in the hotel sector and its supply chains, and standards member hoteliers use to set operaIonal and supply chain ethical requirements. This Code aims to encourage and support members in their decision-making and conduct, guide their collaboraIon, and provide best ethical pracIces when they perform their duIes both inside and outside their organizaIon. In this way all play a major role in aligning the commitments to creaIng a set of tools that foster pracIces within the hotel sector to accelerate gender equality.
LeadingHôtelières’ goal is to achieve the UN’s SDG5 ‘Gender Equality’ within the hotel industry, the areas in which to implement these being as follows:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Non-discriminaIon Workplace Violence & Harassment Equal RemuneraIon for Women & Men Flexibility and Work-life Balance Parental Leave and Childcare Service & Benefits Women in Leadership Inclusive Supply Chain and Economic Inclusion

IniGaGves 1. Study on flexible working structures The first iniIaIve to have been launched by LH is being led by Sowon and her pillar (Renee and Maribel) - this is a sophisIcated study on flexible working structures in hotels. The study will be examining what influences the types of flexibility hotels have and how these types of flexibility are associated with outcomes such as organizaIonal resilience and employee wellbeing which are important in our post-Covid world and to get more talented women in leadership posiIons. The study was launched in March 2021 and we are looking forward to seeing the results in a few month’s Ime 2. YoungHôtelieresInsights (YHI) A related iniIaIve has been established by Frank and Sowon, called YoungHôtelieresInsights. The idea is to provide visibility to young, up and coming female students in hospitality. Students are selected from EHL, InsItut Paul Bocuse and IUBH to write a 500 word piece on a topic of their choice. Once edited, this is published in HoteliersGuild FOD and LookBook as well as other possible platorms.
CommunicaGons Our first press release (anached) was distributed at the end of January 2021 to launch the iniIaIve and garnered considerable interest in the industry. Future press releases will be focused on new iniIaIves as these progress and become newsworthy.
LeadingHôtelières
Leading Hotelières Study Proposal BACKGROUND: Leading Hôtelières (LH) is founded by CEO and President of HoteliersGuild, Frank M Pfaller, and co-founded by Lindsey Ueberroth, CEO at Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Considerate Group Founding Partner, Xenia zu Hohenlohe, leads as Chairwoman for the inaugural year and is joined by co-chair Associate Professor of Management at EHL, Dr. Sowon Kim. LH mission is to accelerate UN’s SDG5 Gender Equality in our industry via four key pillars: 1) Academia & Research, 2) Sponsorship & Network, 3) Communication & Media and 4) Design & Development. Given our mission and the effects of the Covid19 pandemic, the working theme of LH’s first target year was set to be: Driving flexible working structure in hotels. OBJECTIVE of STUDY: LH is undertaking a research on flexible work in hotels and we would need your help to understand the situation in your property, giving you full access to the study results. The study has three goals: 1) understand the type of flexibility hotels have (i.e. labor flexibility vs. workplace flexibility 1), 2) identify what determines the types of flexibility, and 3) identify the effects of types of flexibility on critical work outcomes. Figure 1 shows the model of the proposed study.
Figure 1: Model of proposed study This model will show which color-coded flexibility category leads to best or worst outcomes. In addition, it can also measure improvements. Hotel A who joins this study in Time1, will have a snapshot in the color-coded category it scored highest. Hotel A decides to improve its outcomes by improving its flexibility and takes concrete actions and rejoins this study in Time2 and tracks down its development (shift from one category to the category that leads to better outcomes). CONTRIBUTION AND BENEFITS of STUDY: Your contribution would be to enable us to run a survey in your property that should be answered by the GM (~15min), the Head of HR (~20-30min) and 5-10 randomly selected staff (~10min) from which 20% are senior managers. The participation in this study will give you access to an overview of the flexibility situation in your hotel with associated outcomes. This study is conducted by LH’s academic & research pillar members and expert scholars. RESEARCH TEAM: This study is led by Dr. Sowon Kim, Prof. at EHL, Maribel Esparcia, Prof. at ICD Business School & MD at European Sustainable Hospitality Club, and Dr. Renee Minnaar, Destinations & Systems Trainer at andBeyond Travel. In addition, this study counts with the advice and support of expert scholars, Dr. Nick Beutell, Prof. at La Penta School of Business, Iona College and Dr. Hans-George Wolff, Prof. at Cologne University. 1
Labor flexibility refers to flexibility that enables the company to better respond to fluctuations. Workplace flexibility refers to flexible work arrangements that enable employees to better manage work-family responsibilities.

HoteliersGuild’s LeadingHôteliéres chapter in collaboration with EHL’s WomenInLeadership, Institut Paul Bocuse/Prof.Dr. Henri Kuokkanen and IUBH, Prof. Dr. Willy Legrand is delighted to announce the creation of YoungHôtelièresInsights - a space dedicated for aspiring future hospitality leaders to contribute to our industry with their reflections, ideas, trends and hottest topics as viewed by their generation - that will be
featured in the HoteliersGuild ForumOfDialogue magazine.
EHL’s Prof. Dr. Sowon Kim says: EHL’s Prof. Dr. Sowon Kim says: “ Great idea Frank ! We focus on female students and from time to time male students - here is a thought, we could for example limit to 10-20% of male contribution, and content could be in lines of male championing women (in line with one of our pillars) like for ex. how they see the contribution of their female peers; this might be eye opening for the established hoteliers reading such a piece and realising why there might be a need for them to change too. From my perspective making the “YoungHotelièresInsights” primary female is not being exclusive but rather in line with the mission LH. In addition there is a need to be inclusive when a group is a minority which in this case is women in leadership positions. While everyone needs to be promoted is these hard times, the system is heavily biased against women which is the exact reason why less than 5 percent of the top leadership functions across business and politics worldwide are occupied by women and hence the raison être for LH.”
How it will work? Every semester, the respective professor identifies brilliant female students in their class. They ask for their GPAs and if they are truly interested to pursue a hospitality career. The final version will be published in HoteliersGuild’s FourumOfDialogue with a short bio/pic of the student. Once it is published, the article would also be published via EHL/IBP/IUBH website with a statement such as “original article published in…” which would increase FOD and LH visibility. Frank will actively promote and support the cause via HoteliersGuild
Beatrice and Stanley Tollman, founders of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, receive a nomination for induction into the HoteliersGuild International Hall of Fame.

Dear Frank,
“
We are truly honoured to accept our induction into the HoteliersGuild International Hospitality Hall of Fame, and to be recognised among such passionate and exceptional individuals.
It has been an incredible journey since we opened our first hotel together in May 1954 years ago, and named our business after the red carnation that Stanley still wears in his lapel. We have learned many lessons together during that time, but our unwavering determination to deliver the very best guest experience, the most generous hospitality and exceptional personal service has not faltered. Our people and teams are still at the heart of our hotel collection, and it is their passion and commitment that inspires us each and every day. Today, with 20 hotels around the world, we still face everything together with passion and determination. Hotel-keeping has been a lifelong love affair and it still brings us great joy to read each and every piece of guest feedback, and to work closely with our wonderful teams to continue the standards that we set ourselves all those years ago. Thank you once again for this great honour. With warmest wishes, Beatrice and Stanley Tollman
