ew looks are en-vogue. The often quoted perception of the NEW LUXURY, INTELLIGENT LUXURY and/or SUSTAINABLE LUXURY is changing the architecture and interior design of both, landmark hotels up for renovation, and new developments alike. The definition of luxury has definitely changed, and shifted from opulence to experiential design and simple elegance. Consequently, this trend also means moving away from conformity and paying more attention to technology influences. Modern design allows for more exposure to the exterior and indoor/outdoor spaces with flexible, open facades and continuous spaces. The goal is to create authentic, experiential hospitality and architecture - something which is evidently absent and missed in so many of today’s chain hotels. I have always been very sceptic as to the ‘overbranding’ of luxury properties and therefor took a soft-branding approach in all of our own projects. High-end hotels have become oh so interchangeable, their logo often being the only distinguishing feature. Remember Conrad Hilton, who started out as a luxury hotelier? And Juan Trippe of Pan Am, who founded InterContinental having luxury hotel oases around the world in mind? When investors took over both companies later, they began to ‘uniformise’ the properties! Today, as major investment groups are acquiring landmark hotels solely with ROI in mind, they squeeze most of them into the same management model, creating ‘look-alikes’ , and luxury brands loose their individuality - an

opening for niches, which luckily are sometimes filled by discerning independent hoteliers with a foresight! Fortunately ‘uniformisation’ cannot be said of the properties of our member hoteliers featured in this issue: The Langham, London, and the Victoria-Jungfrau, Interlaken, went though extensive renovation and restoration programs over the past few years, have created their very own style and flair, whilst the fully independent TUGU collection is truly unique - see for yourself! To honour past and present outstanding hoteliers and leaders of our luxury hospitality industry, we have founded The International Hospitality Hall of Fame. I am both, delighted and humbled by the reaction of so many well established colleagues who have accepted invitations to join the Academy, extended warm wishes and congratulations with pledges of their active support! Unfortunately, the SOLARIMPULSE Around the World journey came to an unforeseen end in Hawaii due to battery problems. But the adventure continues next spring - so, stay tuned!

Enjoy the Looks! Frank M. Pfaller President & CEO

>>The Tugu mission is to bring back to life the art, soul and romance of Indonesia's yesteryears.<<

Anhar Setjadibrata is Bali’s largest Collector of Fine Indonesian Art

and Owner of Hotel Tugu Bali & Villa Tugu, managed by his daughter, Lucienne, a long time member of HoteliersGuild. Tugu, in Indonesian language, means 'monument'. Tugu Hotels are small privately owned and designed collection of luxury art hotels born out of one man's love and passion for Indonesia's romantic history. Tugu Hotels' founder, Anhar Setjadibrata, once upon a time a medical student-turned-lawyer, and now the owner of the biggest collection of fine Indonesian art and cultural antiquities in Indonesia, designed these beautiful boutique museum hotels to house his antiques and to share with the world the romantic stories and legends of ancient kingdoms of Indonesia.

The Wantilan Agung (Grand Ceremonial House), where traditional Balinese dances are performed for guests, houses an art gallery featuring Setjadibrata’s exclusive collection of historicIndonesian artwork, antiquities and cultural artifacts. Wantilan Agung is decorated with wooden Boma Head(mythological giant guardians) carvings on the top of crossbeams, and columns inspired by the ancient

>>The art of

Tugu Lombok<<

The island of Lombok, twenty minutes flight east of Bali or 2.5 hours on a speedboat across the Lombok Strait, is a hidden, unpolished jewel traditionally overshadowed by the fame of its neighbouring island. Very few know about its magical serene beaches, long idyllic stretches of white sand; long and slender, wind-bent palm trees with whispering leaves…

Tugu owner Setjadibrata’s endless search for cultural antiquities was never motivated by financial gain. It began as a quest, fuelled by his youthful idealism, to learn the history of his country. “I never thought of collecting for profit,” remarks Setjadibrata. “I was only thinking of a way to save these treasures because they are related to Indonesia’s history, a part of history that I can touch and feel”.

Through the years, his vast collection of antiques continued to grow. “I began to realize that my

collections must no longer speak only to me, they must also speak to all mankind as a symbol of my

country’s rich history and cultural heritage,” added Sedjadibrata. After 12 years, Setjadibrata left his law

practice and decided to make his dream a reality - he became Indonesia’s first and foremost boutique-museum-hotelier!

In 1989 he built his first boutique museum hotel, Tugu Park, in the East Java city of Malang to

showcase his overflow of treasures from Java and beyond. His efforts were soon rewarded. In addition to

being the only hotel in Indonesia to win a national award for architectural excellence, Tugu Malang is a

home to one of the largest collections of Javanese, Chinese and Dutch colonial antiques in Indonesia and is ranked among the 101 Best Hotels in the world.

telling from mouth to mouth; hundreds-years-old archeological findings‌

In bringing back to life these ancient Hindu times in Lombok before the occupation of the Dutch and the Balinese, Hotel Tugu Lombok surrounds itself with chapters from the romantic epic of the Mahabharata.

Carrying the Tugu signature in its mission, style and atmosphere, Hotel Tugu Lombok stands as a monument for the forgotten history, art and romance of ancient kingdoms, where at the same time provides heavenly tropical luxuries like no other resorts do.Hotel Tugu Lombok is located on the pristine, miles and miles of virgin white sand beach of Sire, on the northwest coast of the island. Neighbouring this tropical haven is a beautiful 18 hole-golf course and virgin landscapes, traditional thatched roofed huts and empty green fields, traditional thatched roofed huts and empty green fields where local life continues in today’s age much the same as it has done for centuries.

In 1894, a priceless volume of an ancient manuscript was found at the Puri Cakranegara in Lombok by a Dutch historian by the name of Brandes. Soon enough, this manuscript was identified as the only surviving and most important record of the ancient Hindu era of Majapahit, a vast kingdom that was the most prosperous of all times and reigned through most of the archipelago. The manuscript, known as the Negara Krtagama, has recorded years of history

AROUND THE WORLD

The clean-tech revolution<<

HoteliersGuild supports SI and we applaud the pilots and the team ….-

Record-breaking solar flight reaches Hawaii after 5 nights and days airborne without fuel.

Unlimited endurance is now proven thanks to clean technology

HAWAII, July 3rd, 2015.The longest and most difficult leg of the Round the World Solar Flight attempted since last March by Swiss explorers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg ended successfully in Hawaii. At the controls of Solar Impulse 2, pilot André Borschberg landed safely in Hawaii after flying 117 hours and 52 minutes over the Pacific Ocean from Japan powered only by the sun.

A historic landing took place in Hawaii after a perilous nonstop flight for 5 days and 5 nights. With the sun rising this morning at 5:55 am local time Hawaii (15:55 GMT), Solar Impulse 2 touched down at the Kalaeloa Airport after traveling a distance of roughly 4480 miles (7'200 km). Pilot André Borschberg, also co-founder of Solar Impulse with

Bertrand Piccard, broke the world records of distance and duration for solar aviation, as well as the world record for the longest solo flight ever, (117: 52 hours and around 7'200 km. These world records will be ratified upon landing by the International Aeronautical Federation.

André endured many challenges requiring him to carefully maintain a balance between wearing an oxygen mask for long stretches of time during high altitude, getting enough rest and maximizing the energy levels of the plane, particularly during turbulent weather conditions. Successfully accomplishing this 8th leg by remaining airborne for 5 consecutive days and nights has now proven that the airplane’s critical components perform exceptionally and that Solar Impulse’s vision of reaching unlimited endurance without fuel, using solely the power of the sun, was not only a dream: perpetual flight is a reality.

“I feel exhilarated by this extraordinary journey. I have climbed the equivalent altitude of Mount Everest five times without much rest. The team at the Mission Control Center in Monaco (MCC) was my eyes and my ears… The MCC was battling to give me the possibility to rest and recover, but also maximizing the aircraft’s energy levels and sending me trajectories and flight strategies simulated by computer", said André Borschberg, "This success fully validates the vision that my partner Bertrand Piccard had after his round-the-world balloon flight to reach unlimited endurance in an airplane without fuel", he adds.

"What AndrĂŠ has achieved is extraordinary from the perspective of a pilot. But furthermore, he has also led the technical team during the construction of this revolutionary prototype. It is not only a historic first in aviation it is also a historic first for renewable energies." said Bertrand Piccard, initiator of Solar Impulse, chairman and pilot.

Solar Impulse’s bold mission of building a solar plane was created to demonstrate how pioneering spirit, innovation and clean technologies can change the world and to encourage people to save energy and promote the use of clean technologies globally. Departing from Abu Dhabi in March, the

explorers are not on this endeavor for the sake of it, as mankind is facing a much bigger problem with pollution, depletion of natural resources and climate change. For Bertrand Piccard, the unprecedented accomplishment is to demonstrate that if technological solutions exist to fly a plane day and night without fuel which has been successfully proven - then there is potential for these same efficient technologies to be used in our daily lives, and to achieve energy savings to reduce CO2 emissions.

>> The new Look of VictoriaJungfrau Grand Hotel – symbol

of Swiss hospitality for 150 years <<

Interlaken can be considered one of the cradles of Switzerland's legendary hospitality – not least because of the prestige enjoyed by the VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU Grand Hotel & Spa for 150 years. This exceptional 5-star luxury establishment opened its distinguished doors in 1865. Today it offers discerning guests the most modern comforts combined with old world charm, refined elegance with relaxed informality.

The VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU Grand Hotel & Spa offers not only exclusive accommodation but also imposing Belle Epoque event rooms, awardwinning gastronomy as well as state-of-the-art conference facilities. And a wonderful world of wellness. Above all, guests are assured the warmest of welcomes and hospitality. Our member hotelier, Urs Grimm, Managing Director of the VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU, explains: "Our guests entrust us with their precious, well-earned leisure time. Our paramount priority is, therefore to offer them the most memorable holiday experience – in fact, to exceed their high expectations."

Urs & Yasmin Grimm

_____________________________________

Over the years, much passion, dedicated commitment and considerable financial resources have been invested in the future of the VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU. The hotel has undergone repeated renovation and modernisation to meet the constantly changing requirements of contemporary clientele. In the early 1990s, for example, the hotel "boulevard" was transformed by a blend of glass and steel into a light and airy lobby, linking the Victoria and Jungfrau buildings at ground level. 1992 saw the opening of the VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU Spa – a spectacular and spacious 5500 square metre world of wellness which counts among the finest in Europe. The VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU has always played a pioneering role in innovative expansion and in providing its guests with the highest standards of comfort and personal service.

In 2003, 10 new Junior Suites (56 to 74 square metres) were built in the Bel Air wing of the hotel, each with direct access to the VICTORIA-JUNGFRAU Spa. Only the highest-quality materials of natural wood, stone and glass were used for the interior. Fine fabrics and upholstery in soft muted colours, parquet flooring and a clever lighting concept which bathes the high ceilinged rooms in a gentle glow – all contribute to the overall setting of serenity, clarity and exquisite elegance. Large modern bathrooms in granite, relaxing rest areas, a cosy window seat and an own terrace enhance the feeling of first-class comfort. Peace and privacy are to be found in all rooms and suites. Views extend to the imposing Jungfrau massif, over the rooftops of Interlaken to the picturesque Niesen chain or the nearby Harder.

Interlaken has long enjoyed international acclaim as one of Switzerland's most attractive year-round resorts. Poets and painters have been inspired by its beauty. Composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, one of many famous visitors, wrote to his mother in 1842: "The region between the lakes of Thun and Brienz is the most wonderful of all in this unbelievably beautiful country."
