USING HOSPITALITY TO BE OF SERVICE TO ALL STAKEHOLDERS
WHY INTENTION RUNS THE OUTCOME? By Maribel Esparcia Pérez
As the industry recovers from the past two years under travel restrictions, we have an opportunity to use hotels as catalysts for local transformation. We can positively impact many areas of society if we use the hospitality industry of service. Nowadays, everyone talks about sustainability, including OTAs and other stakeholders. We should not forget why we have hotels in the first place. Getting back to the roots of why we have the accommodation and how we can create positive actions in everyday operations. From conserving local biodiversity to ensuring employees feel valued and have equal opportunities. Taking action based on intrinsic and non-instrumental values. The focus should be on transparency and caring for locals, employees, suppliers, and guests, without asking what the ROI of these actions will be. As we develop ESG KPIs and metrics for hotels to embed sustainability in operations, we realize the gap and the many opportunities they have to make an impact depending on their geography, local needs, public-private collaboration, among other unique company characteristics. Does your firm's performance allow you to invest in sustainability? Or Does genuine care lead to firm performance? When I get asked what sustainability means to me, I answer that it is about creativity. Finding solutions to complex issues by creating alliances. The CEO at Artiem recently said, "In times of uncertainty, keep focusing on your purpose". Making the right thing and truly caring is not at the expense of profit, but it supports profit. What are you willing to stand for?
