This collaboration provides Select Sires’ customer-owners with access to the balanced Jersey sires Jerseyland Sires has been known for proving and supplying for more than 35 years.

“Select Sires is committed to enhancing the genetic quality available in the Jersey breed and have found a partner in Jerseyland Sires who also shares that passion and commitment,” explained David Thorbahn, Select Sires president and CEO. “We feel this combination of two industry leaders will supply an amazing offering of Jersey sires for our customer-owners.”

Select Sires will offer sires annually from Jerseyland Sires while continuing to market sires from River Valley Farm and source additional elite sires for the traditional Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) from Jersey breeders. This combined genetic development will provide Jersey customers with a large, diverse lineup of leading Jersey sires.

Deep Jersey roots Jerseyland Sires has origins in the late 1970s when a group of California Jersey breeders decided to improve their herds’ genetics. The late Phil Fanelli acted as their in-house geneticist and sire analyst and they placed several ads in the Jersey Journal soliciting pedigrees of bulls available for purchase. Fanelli selected 10 bulls, mostly from New England, and in the fall of 1978, Fanelli, Dick Clauss and Duane Wickstrom headed east.

On their way back they made a stop at the All American Show and Sale in Louisville, Ky. and while the bulls were resting in the barn, Executive

Secretary Jim Cavanaugh stopped by to view them. After analyzing the bulls and pedigrees, Cavanaugh suggested they not only use the bulls in their own herds, but collect and prove them since the Jersey breed was in need of more proven sires.

In 1979, 13 Jersey breeders in the Hilmar, Calif. area formally partnered to form Jerseyland Sires. Seven additional bull-buying trips were made and as the bulls were proven in Jerseyland Sires member herds, the sires would be leased to other A.I. organizations. This led to one of the most influential sires of the last century, 7JE177 Highland Magic DUNCAN, making his home at Select Sires.

DUNCAN was purchased by Jerseyland Sires in 1981 from Highland Farms in Cornish, Maine, a herd that has bred registered Jerseys since 1886. After Select Sires’ Rodger Hoyt and Scott Johnson evaluated DUNCAN offspring they pushed for his addition to the Select Sires marketing lineup.

He reigned as the breed leader from July 1986 to January 1988; at its peak his PTI was almost double the No. 2 sire. Although his A.I. career was cut short, he was the Premier Sire at the

1990 and 1991 All American Jersey Shows, sired many outstanding sons and grandsons and was the sire of Duncan Belle (EX-3E), the two-time Royal Winter Fair grand champion and 2000 Jersey Journal Great Cow Contest winner.

“I’ve watched the Jerseyland Sires program develop over the last 30 years and admired the respect the owners carried for each other,” said Jeff Ziegler, Select Sires genomic program manager. “This same respect and trust fits beautifully into the Select Sires Jersey Revolution model. Both Jerseyland Sires and Select Sires have a long-term commitment toward Jersey genetic profitability that will benefit our customers for generations to come.”

The first Jerseyland Sires program sires will have semen available in the summer of 2016. All Jerseyland sires will carry the “7JE” stud code and be available for purchase through your local Select Sires sales representative.

“The synergies between Jerseyland Sires and Select Sires are incredible,” said Ziegler. “Profit-driven genetics and programs will only be enhanced for all Jersey customers through Jerseyland Sires’ involvement.” 

An Interview with Dick Chichester At the August 14, 1973 Select Sires board meeting, Richard (Dick) H. L. Chichester was named general manager of Select Sires, a short time after he had been appointed acting general manager. Following is an interview that occurred in the winter of 2013 with Chichester reviewing the 27 years of his involvement with Select Sires. The full interview appears in The Elevation of an Industry: 50 Years of Select Sires Helping the Cattle Industry Reach New Heights written

How did your interest in cattle begin?

Chichester: My grandfather was a justice of the Virginia Supreme Court after starting as a Circuit judge. His interest was really in cattle however, and he started a farm of 15 to 20 cows near my boyhood home in Fredericksburg, Va. in 1915. His interest was so strong that he would travel across the east coast to find Guernsey cattle for his breeding program. One of his first big purchases was a Guernsey bull from Mr. Macy, who had started the Macy’s department stores. The bull came down from New York on a boxcar and he was walked three miles from the train depot to the farm. This bull turned out to be quite a transmitter and my grandfather’s $150 purchase eventually turned into a $20,000 sale in 1919 to Mr. Babson of milking equipment fame. You can imagine that something like that would create my interest in bulls and it stuck!

Describe your first few years as general manager at Select Sires:

Chichester: In 1973, Virginia Tech approached Jim Nichols about becoming the dean of the college of agriculture. Obviously that is a tough job to turn down and around the same time, some of the members were rebuffing some of Nichols ideas to expand and consolidate the federation into one entity. The politics of the situation caused Nichols to

leave and the board approached me about running the organization until they found somebody qualified. I told them I would do it but I wanted them to get somebody qualified as soon as they could. As it turns out, it was 27 years later until they found somebody qualified!

Why has Select Sires been successful?

Chichester: Well, ELEVATION made a rookie manager look good, but from there we have always been fortunate to have a lineup of bulls that were in demand. 7HO477 GLENDELL Arlinda Chief (EX-93-GM), 7HO195 Wapa Arlinda CONDUCTOR (EX-90-GM), 7HO191 WAYNE-Spring Fond Apollo (GP-82-GM)… the list goes on and on, the TPI® dominance has always been there. Success and growth usually go hand-in-hand and World Wide Sires has also been a key to our growth.

There was some discussion on how we could best handle our international marketing and Bill Clark from World Wide Sires invited George Miller and me out to Hanford, Calif. to see how our groups could work together. It was pretty obvious that selling semen to World Wide Sires on a wholesale basis for international marketing could work if we made sure that the member cooperatives of Select Sires were taken care of first. That worked out pretty good for both parties. Our member cooperatives got the bulls they needed for our member-owners and World Wide

In 1979, a crew from CBS traveled to Plain City to interview then general manager Dick Chichester about the influence of 7HO58 Round Oak Rag Apple ELEVATION (EX-96-GM) on the Holstein breed for the documentary "The Baby Makers" that aired that fall.

Sires could market bulls for us with no additional overhead to our members.

In Latin America, we also saw strong growth with Jerry Fickel and his team.

Again, it all comes back to people.

Who were some of the key people that you worked with?

Chichester: When I arrived, our Program for Genetic Advancement™ young sire program was run by a man that wanted to buy bulls and who also thought that his Ph.D. was worth extra salary. I wasn’t highly educated myself so I didn’t think that carried much weight. A competitor had employed a Ph.D. so it was becoming fashionable to hire Ph.D.’s to manage the sire departments of major A.I. companies.

I have always felt that you end up with better bulls when you listen to the farmer and the customer, so I didn’t see the value in having a Ph.D. just to say we have a Ph.D. managing our department. Another competitor wanted to hire this guy from us, and that was just fine with me. It opened the position for Rodger Hoyt. Rodger was a detail man that was also a perfectionist. He was exactly what we needed to manage our young sire program. He developed a good program, had a lot of follow-up, and put a system in place that could keep

track of the growing number of young sires in our program. I believe some of the recording devices developed by Rodger are still in use today.

Finance was another area where we were always fortunate to have good people. Don McKean was one of the first leaders in that department and he came over from COBA at the request of Jim Nichols. Don was bored in a meeting one day and got to doodling, well the diamond doodle that he drew ended up becoming the Select Sires diamond logo that we use today. That logo was there from day one; people often think you need a high-price ad agency to develop these items and that was nothing more than a doodle.  Want to read more? StrataGEN Fits Burnett Enterprises Burnett Enterprises, a 3,000-cow dairy farm in Carpenter, Wyo., has been using StrataGEN® for sire selection since February 2013 and have already realized the benefits of using a single-focused sire selection.

When Burnett Enterprises began in 2004, Jeff and Kim Burnett and Jay and Lisa Burnett were already interested in using a simplified breeding program by using very few sires at one time.

This sire selection philosophy was developed by brothers Jeff and Jay growing up on a beef cow-calf and feedlot operation when they would crossbreed their herd for the benefits of hybrid vigor. Working with Brad Meek, Select Sires MidAmerica genetic consultant, they would choose sires that fit the operation from a pedigree and conformation standpoint. Although StrataGEN was yet to be developed they used sires that generally fell into the yellow, red and blue lines, respectively.

When StrataGEN debuted it was

an ideal fit for Burnett Enterprises because of their past experience.

Now, the Burnetts use one sire for 20 to 21 months before switching to the next line; the next line switch will be in the spring of 2017 when they move to the yellow line.

To choose the sire within the each line, Jeff works with Select Sire MidAmerica’s Sales Representative Jay Hill. They focus on limiting stature by using negative stature sires, improving udder conformation, increasing milk production and fitness traits including Productive Life (PL), Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and Calving Ease and Stillbirth traits. The Burnetts want to develop efficient, durable and highly productive cows.

The StrataGEN difference “By using StrataGEN we have better calf vitality and reproduction and excess heifers,” explains Jeff.

Heifers and cows are also more uniform throughout and they have noticed higher milk production.

The Burnetts now sell excess milk cows to six different dairies in the area.

They noticed another advantage of StrataGEN and using very few sires at one time, after performing some genomic testing. Their sire identification was 100 percent accurate for their A.I.-sired calves which reflects the simplicity of StrataGEN and the attention to detail at Burnett Enterprises.

“StrataGEN reminds me of the crossbreeding we did in our beef herd,” says Jeff. “We are using Holstein sires and getting the benefit of crossbreeding within the Holstein breed.”

They are especially pleased with their milking PLANET daughters.

An unconventional path The Burnetts began dairying in February 2004 when they decided to partner on a rented facility with 60 cows and quickly expanded to 600 cows. The next year they built the current Burnett Enterprises facilities and milked 2,500 cows. In 2006, they expanded again to 3,000 which is the current size of the operation.

In the spring of 2014 they built new calf and heifer facilities so they could raise their own youngstock.

The current owners of the operation include Jeff, the general

StrataGEN consists of five color-coded lines of sires that are closely related to the sires in their line, but very distant from sires in other lines. This allows dairies to minimize inbreeding by choosing to use sires from one line at a time and to simplify their breeding system by only using a few sires from each line at a time.

manager for the dairy, Kim, the lead accountant who works closely with pen move decisions, and Jay who oversees the feed and nutrition for the dairy. Eiseniko Boersma has served as Burnett Enterprise’s herd and personnel manager since 2007 and supervises the 45 full-time employees.

Jay and Jeff also handle the crop operations which include 3,000 acres under pivot in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. They grow corn, triticale and alfalfa and have a cow-calf beef operation.

Cows are housed in freestall barns with dry lots for lower producing and later lactation cows.

The Burnetts have a very unique pen-sorting system. Cows are sorted by body condition into pens and fed one of six separate rations to maximize production and feed efficiency.

The dairy has a double-35 parallel parlor with a single-15 parlor for the fresh and hospital barn. They average 80 pounds of milk per day with a Mature Equivalent 305-day milk production of 27,756 pounds.

Brett Stone is the dairy’s overall herd reproduction manager. They

walk and tail paint the herd to detect heats and use some synchronization on cows not bred by 100 days in milk. Their current pregnancy rate is 21 percent.

Burnett Enterprises have been working with Select Sires since the beginning of the operation in 2004.

Hill has been their long-time sales representative and occasionally helps with breeding. Aaron Shiflett provides RePRO Analysis™ services, reproductive training and also assists with breeding. Meek and Lyle Kruse, Select Sires vice president of U.S. market development, are involved in sire selection and implementation of StrataGEN. “We use Select Sires for a large number of reasons: the quality and depth of the sire program, ‘do what it takes’ service, availability 24/7, better offspring, their track record and convenience,” says Jeff.

The Burnetts rely heavily on help and consultation from industry specialists. Their trusted advisors include their two veterinarians, nutritionist, Hill and Shiflett.

Integrating the next generation of Burnetts into the dairy is among their future plans. Jeff and Kim have two children, Reese (15) and Layne (12) while Jay and Lisa have one son, Cash (7).

Because of the Burnetts unique path to the dairy industry they approach things with an unconventional thought process.

This has benefited them in many ways including the early adoption of StrataGEN. “The Burnetts have worked very hard to get where they are today,” says Hill. “They deserve the success they have achieved.”

S-S-I Suprsire Miri 8679-ET (VG-85-VG-MS-DOM) established herself as a genetic leader after the August 2015 sire summary. Miri, a daughter of No. 1 proven GTPI sire 7HO11351 Seagull-Bay SUPERSIREET (VG-88-GM), is the No. 1 GTPI® cow in the breed at +2748 and the dam of the No. 1 sire on the TPI Genomic Young Bulls list, 507HO13250 S-S-I Montross JEDI-ET. A result of Select Sires’ Aggressive Reproductive Technologies™ (ART™) program, Miri is a granddaughter of the one of the original ART success stories, Roylane Shot Mindy 2079-ET (VG-86-DOM) who was a maternal sister to genetic giant, 7HO10524 Roylane Socra ROBUST-ET (VG-88-GM).

Miri, like all females in the ART program, is expected to perform in milking form. After being on an extensive in vitro fertilization (IVF) program, heifers are bred and placed in well-managed, commercial-style cooperator herds scattered across several states. These heifers calve in, are classified, and then need to produce and perform like any bull mother for her offspring to enter the Select Sires lineup.

Miri resides at Mystic Valley Dairy, LLC, in Sauk City, Wis., a 430-cow dairy operated by Mitch Breunig and his family.

“Other than being flushed and pictured, Miri is not managed any different than any other cow here,” explains Breunig. “She appears to be the very low-management type of cow people are asking for.”

Family Matters Mindy, Miri’s grandam, and her family have made a far-reaching impact at Select Sires with numerous descendants and several that call Buschur Dairy Farms home in New Weston, Ohio.

“The Mindys are like their mother in that they are almost all strong,” explains Steve Buschur. “They have excellent udder quality, shallow udders, good mobility and outstanding production, especially components.”

Service is Key for Doug Moyer Doug Moyer, the recipient of this year’s Select Reproductive Solutions™ (SRS™) Specialist of the Year, began working for NorthStar Cooperative seven years ago. Fascinated by reproductive technologies and techniques, he is constantly learning to provide the best advice and service to his customers.

Moyer grew up on a 500-acre farm in northern Michigan where his family raised hogs, farrow to finish, and crossbred beef cows. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Michigan State and marrying his wife, Auburn, he began working at a custom bull collection facility in southern Michigan.

“I was able to be involved in all aspects of semen collection and processing with everything from bulls and whitetail deer to goats and water buffalo,” explains Moyer.

After his wife’s graduation from veterinary school, he needed to find a new career so he reached out to NorthStar because of their reputation.

He began working as an A.I. technician in the fall of 2008.

“Select Sires gave me the opportunity to continue to work in a field that I was very committed to and work for an organization that was, and is, on the cutting edge of reproduction in so many ways,” explains Moyer.

It was during his initial job as an A.I. technician he realized the possibilities

within Select Sires.

“While running my A.I. route I became interested in records analysis,” Moyer says. “My supervisor supported my interest and I began attending SRS Conferences and running analysis for herds in my area.”

When Select Sires began selling and servicing heat detection systems, Moyer thought it was important that he could install and service the systems for his customers. That interest led him to being named the Select Detect™ specialist in Michigan and Indiana and he has continued to be involved with new herd management systems including, CowManager®. His work with activity systems earned him the Select Detect Specialist of the Year award in 2012.

Two years ago, Moyer took on more responsibility as a team leader. Now, he works with a team of A.I. technicians, Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) genetic consultants, sales people and DHI specialists to ensure a high level of service for customers.

Doug Moyer: Account Team Leader, SRS Specialist and Activity System Specialist Family: Moyer and his wife, Auburn, have twin six-

year-old girls, Lucy and Alison, and a three-year-old son, Jonathan.

Agricultural Background: Moyer grew up on a farm in northern Michigan where his family raised hogs and crossbred beef cows and farmed 500 acres.

Daily Responsibilities: He spends his time doing everything from reproductive consulting with customers to sales calls to running an A.I. route for a technician. He also supports activity systems and troubleshoots reproductive issues or answers questions about reproductive strategies over the phone. As a team leader, he works with a team of specialists to ensure a high level of service for customers.

Award Spotlight: A.I. technician Super Achiever, Select Detect Specialist of the Year (2012) and SRS Specialist of the Year (2015).

Making an impact For Moyer there isn’t a typical day on the job. He spends his time doing everything from reproductive consulting with customers to sales calls to running an A.I. route for a technician.

He also supports activity systems and troubleshoots reproductive issues or answers questions about reproductive strategies over the phone.

“The most challenging part of my job is keeping up,” says Moyer. “Things change so fast and staying current is vital to providing the best advice we can to our producers. It is an honor to sit at the table and provide input that will affect decisions made on any dairy and a great responsibility to be sure what you are providing is valid and relevant.”

Moyer enjoys that his job allows him the opportunity to work with customers.

“I have a desire to be a positive impact to the hardest-working people in the world,” explains Moyer. “I’m a big believer in not only doing the right things, but doing them for the right reasons. The people I get to work with at Select are passionate about what they do and it is the passion that our people have to come early, stay later and work harder that sets us apart.”

That drive to serve his customers earned him the SRS Specialist of the

Year this summer.

“Doug is vivacious in his work efforts, always placing the customer first,” says Mark Adam, NorthStar Cooperative general manager. “He is focused on making connections and working alongside his fellow NorthStar employees to enhance the support offered to our customers. Doug epitomizes the standards we strive for to support our producers and their wellbeing.”

Moving forward Moyer doesn’t see the A.I. industry slowing down anytime soon.

“Genetics, management practices and reproductive strategies have changed immensely in just the past eight years and if I know one thing for sure, it isn’t going to stop,” explains Moyer. “Technology is making its presence felt in newer and more dynamic ways in our industry and it is providing new opportunities and challenges to dairy producers. SRS specialists are there to help producers sort through what works and, more importantly, what will work well for their operation. We are a network of trained professionals from across the globe dedicated to bringing producers solutions that work.”
