PARADES AND POKER David C. Thorbahn, president and C.E.O.
Nearly 500 sales and support staff gathered at Select Sires’ headquarters to watch their favorite bulls on parade. Also in attendance was Mr. GianPaul Gonzalez, a ninth grade history teacher from New Jersey. In just a few moments, Mr. Gonzalez witnessed his first bull parade and learned more about the dairy industry than he had experienced in his lifetime. Following the parade, Gonzalez took the stage and shared a message that resonated with every Select Sires team member. He began by explaining the concept of ALL IN in relation to a poker game and in life’s mission. In short, he shared that being ALL IN is giving your everything to achieve your goals and always being present in the moment. Gonzalez went on to tell his story and illustrate how his motivational words and a team’s positive spirits led the New York Giants to a Superbowl XLVI ring. Since then, Gonzalez has traveled internationally, sharing his message with athletic teams, organizations and corporations. Perhaps the most impressive piece of his story being that to this day, he continues in his career as an inner city school teacher and has set up an after school program for underprivileged students. Participation in the program has surpassed 1,800! Select Sires is ALL IN September marked Select Sires’ biannual national sales conference and headlining the event was the motivational talk from Gonzalez. At the conference, our sales and support professionals participated in high-level discussions about genetic and reproductive consultation. They were exposed to industryleading research and innovative tools to add value and enhance their service to dairy and beef producers. While Select Sires is known for exceptional genetics, it is our unparalleled service that has elevated the cooperative to be the industry leader. Gonzalez’s concept of ALL IN is perfectly illustrated by Select Sires’ sales and support staff from coast-to-coast.
Investments and Commitments As an employer, Select Sires and its member cooperatives have a commitment to invest in the education and development of employees. As a cooperative, we have a commitment to provide our customer-owners with trusted advisors. These two commitments are fueled by our brand promise, Your Success Our Passion. Agriculture is a challenging industry and we recognize your perseverance as strength and passion. As Gonzalez shared with us, ALL IN isn’t a slogan, it’s a lifestyle. As customer-owners, you can feel confident in your cooperative—know that your sales and support staff are ALL IN to enhance your success and maintain a passion to learn and to improve the future of your livelihood. u

NEXT LEVEL
GENETIC GAINS Planning is a critical factor in the success of your dairy. Managers make genetic and reproductive decisions to create the next generation of profitable cattle, and families make decisions for the next generation of ownership. Arizona Dairy Company Located along the city limits of Mesa, Az., this 8,000-cow dairy puts an extreme focus on fast genetic progress. Planning for the next generation of genetics and ownership are common conversations between coowners Denton Ross, Dustin Ross, Justin Stewart and their families. Goals for the dairy center around genetic progress with no plans to expand the herd, but instead develop extremely efficient cattle with intense genetic selection. With more than 12,000 genomic tests and a fullservice IVF laboratory on site, Arizona Dairy Company uses genomic testing and IVF technologies aggressively. In terms of

sire selection, genomic young sires are at the top of their list. Carrying the most weight in the herd’s selection index is TPI®, with Udder Composite (UDC), Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and Combined Fat and Protein (CFP) values also considered. “We enrolled in the NxGEN program to secure early access to the best bulls-it’s as simple as that,” says Denton Ross. As a NxGEN member, Arizona Dairy Company has exclusive, early access to six of the industry’s most exciting sires and counting. “The NxGEN program was designed for dairymen that want to drive genetic performance. The lineup will include sires to meet the needs of every dairy producer, no matter the management environment or selection critera,” explains Jordan Siemers, Holstein sire analyst. “This program is unlike anything previously offered by Select Sires. Not only do customer-owners have the opportunity to purchase the highest-caliber sires earlier, but the ordering and shipment process puts these genetics on doorsteps within one week.”

ONE YEAR LATER
1
It’s been one year since Select Sires launched the Elite Sexed Fertility and Superior Sexed FertilityTM designations for the Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics product lines-the first in the industry to identify sires that achieve superior fertility in sex sorted products. Today, the stringent requirements for bulls to earn this elite status continues and customer-owners experience the benefits.
RESEARCH Select Sires prides itself in using biologically meaningful, real-world data to supply customers with the most accurate information about fertility. Perhaps the most important lesson learned is that fertility is not a one-size-fits-all approach when comparing semen products. For example, the fertility superiority achieved by an individual sire’s conventional product may not translate to their gender SELECTed™ SexedULTRA 2M and 4M product. Sires must earn each designation associated with high fertility for each semen product independently, including Superior SettlerTM, Fertility PROTM, Elite Sexed Fertility and Superior Sexed Fertility. In order to achieve Elite Sexed Fertility and Superior Sexed Fertility status, sires must have greater than 500 sex-sorted semen inseminations and maintain a two percentage point advantage in conception rate over the average conception rate of all their peers.
RESULTS Earning the Elite Sexed Fertility or Superior Sexed Fertility designation is no small accomplishment. Among sires available with sex-sorted semen across all Select Sires’ product lines, less than one in ten bulls have qualified in the past year. Selecting sires that have been designated Elite Sexed Fertility or Superior Sexed Fertility—regardless of whether offered in 2M or 4M dosages—ensures that you are maximizing the likelihood of creating your herd’s next crop of superior heifers through the power of fertile genetics. To date, more than 20 daughterproven and genomic young Holstein sires, and more than 10 Jerseys, from stud codes 07, 14 and 250 qualify for these two elite designations.
TRANSPARENCY
6 u
As a farmer-owned and -controlled cooperative, Select Sires makes transparency and honest marketing a priority. The same data collected and utilized to identify high fertility sex-sorted sires is also used to safeguard customers from low fertility semen that won’t benefit their genetic program. Not all bulls can be offered in a sex-sorted option because at Select Sires, we are unwilling to compromise the success of our customers. There is no denying Select Sires’ leadership with the industry’s largest offering of highly fertile* sires in both conventional and sex-sorted products. As a customer-owner of the Select Sires cooperative, you can feel confident in knowing the research team will continue to bring you the best product in the marketplace coupled with innovative technologies and transparent communications. NOT EVERY HEIFER IS GUARANTEED AN INTERVIEW
If you have an open position on your dairy, the first step in the hiring process is to sort through a stack of resumes. You review qualifications on paper and then extend interviews, and in many cases, you don’t extend interviews to every candidatecandidate- the same process should be true for potential herd replacements. Advancements in data and the drive for efficiency have led focus to identifying the most profitable cows to fill available slots in the dairy herd.

First Lactation
For most U.S. dairy owners, the true cost to raise a single heifer from birth to first calving often exceeds $2,000. To cover your investment in heifer rearing costs, a replacement heifer needs to stay in production well into her second lactation, based on average milk production. Developing a herd with a higher percentage of healthy and productive third lactation and older cows is critical to dairy profitability. The simple reality is that most second lactation and older cows produce more milk than their first lactation herdmates, as illustrated in Figure 1. Along with good herd management practices, using an aggressive genetic development plan will provide dairy owners with a solid foundation for creating more profitable herd replacements. Using pedigree or genomic data, dairies can identify heifers with the highest profit potential. Based on Net Merit (NM$) quartile analysis of first lactation cows in the Figure 2 example, the higher NM$ heifers are more productive, have fewer days open and are much more likely to remain in the herd. In recent years, we have seen improvements in calf survival and a reduction in herd turnover rate through advancements in reproduction, cow comfort and overall herd management. These victories have led to a surplus of heifers at many dairy operations, providing dairy owners with opportunities to select the best replacements and add new revenue streams. One of the long-held standards in the dairy industry is that all heifers have better potential than older cows and should be guaranteed a stall in the barn. With today’s performance analysis, we are learning that not all heifers deserve that job interview. By analyzing the results from a genetic audit, dairies may see that there are adequate cows and heifers of elite merit available to meet stocking needs. Planning and execution to develop the most profitable future herd replacements is unique to each operation. You can rely on guidance and expertise from Select Sires to help analyze this data and prepare for the future. In 2018, Select Sires launched ProfitMAXTM and has since been providing herds with customizable recommendations to improve longterm profitability. Contact your local representative today to enroll your herd in this complete consultation service.

PROBLEMS

SELECT
Turns up the HEAT! DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR FEED CHALLENGES CAUSED BY MOLDS AND THEIR METABOLITES.
Common signs that cows may be suffering from feed challenges are poor reproductive performance, including weak heats, cystic ovaries and even abortions. Other signs include loose manure, low or erratic feed consumption, reduced milk production and elevated somatic cell counts. If your cows are experiencing these symptoms, contact your Select Sires representative today to learn more about Select DTX and turn up the heats in your herd!
Reports tell us that the quality of 2019 hay and haylage is less than desirable. Corn planting was delayed by cold, wet weather and there are predictions of early frosts. These factors mean that we can likely expect lesser corn and soybean yields and increased challenges of fungal contamination. What can you do to reduce your operation’s risk? Management strategy in the face of multiple problems is critical. It is tempting to cut expenses and hope for a positive outcome. Or, you may look for opportunities to protect and advance your herd. You’ve been working toward genetic, performance and efficiency goals. Eliminating key program components can negatively affect the progress you have accomplished. Being cautious of where to minimize costs has a direct effect on your overall bottom line. Mycotoxins won’t wait for better times. They are here now and will continue to challenge your operation. You can opt for a low-cost product with minimal protection, or you can choose to provide insurance against multiple mycotoxin challenges such as lower reproductive performance and general herd health. Let me stress the words multiple mycotoxin challenge. Dairy producers and their nutritionists tend to think primarily about DON and zearalenone, and in some areas, aflatoxin. But there are many more of these fungal poisons. Recently, in a research trial, feedstuffs were sent for a 17-mycotoxin analysis. Three sets of test reports for the final feed and the main ingredients all came back negative for the 17 mycotoxins. Another set of samples was sent to a lab with the ability to measure over 700 mycotoxins simultaneously. Cytochalasin J, abscisic acid, alternariol-methylether, furarinolic acid, and epiequisetin were just a few of the 15 other mycotoxins found in those sample analyses. I suspect that individually they may not be of major toxicological significance in animals. But collectively, what is the synergetic potential?
In the same trial, animals treated with Select DTXTM had significant advantages over controls that were being treated with one of the few competing, functionally effective mycotoxin control agents. DTX performed statistically higher. Other products tend to be limited by toxin specificities which makes them of lesser value in a multi-mycotoxin challenge. Evidence we are challenged by multiple mycotoxins is illustrated in the chart below. Regional Results Dairy samples submitted April 1 through June 30, 2019. Total samples: 339 Samples Affected (%)

Mycotoxin DON
A simple clay might help some aflatoxin worries; maybe you can use a yeast cell-wall product that can combat some of the DON and perhaps a little zearalenone; or you might choose an enzyme-based product specific to zearalenone. Select DTX is the only product on the market formulated to handle all major toxins, in addition to the minor toxins we have seen over the years.

CROSSING PROFIT LINES
NEW CROSSBREEDING RESEARCH Curiosity continues in the crossbreeding sphere. Both producers and researchers expressing the need for efficient and sustainable production puts pressure on genetic discovery and advancement. The most recent discovery in this space results from a ten-year study conducted by the University of Minnesota. Select Sires and Minnesota Select Sires Co-op, Inc. provided funding for the project and offered support with data collection and coordination. Seven well-managed and high-performing commercial herds participated in the study, which compared lifetime performance of Holstein, Viking-Red and Montbeliarde cross cows to purebred Holsteins. In total, it included lifetime performance of 1,074 two-way crosses, 1,065 three-way crosses and 2,294 purebred Holsteins. The three-breed cross cows in this study were cows bred in the first rotation of a three-breed rotational crossbreeding system. Since they were the first crosses, they benefitted from 100 percent heterosis. Maintaining heterosis at the 100 percent level is not possible in future generations. A three-breed rotational cross will maintain heterosis at 86 percent. Profitability of future
12 u
generations of three-way cross cows is expected to be higher than pure Holsteins but would be slightly less than the profitability of the cows included in this study. Ultimately, the three-way cross cows performed better and earned more profit than their contemporary Holstein herdmates. The increased profit was a result of heterosis and a combination of better fertility, health and longevity. Highlights from the study illustrated lower stillbirth rates, fewer days open and decreased health costs. Perhaps the most notable performance differences were seen in health and wellness. When comparing health treatments to the Holstein group, the two-breed cross cows had 23 percent less costs and the three-breed crosses had 17 percent less costs. As illustrated above, the results from the study favored the Montbeliarde-sired three-way cross cattle with 51 cents and 13 percent more profit per day than the purebred Holstein group. The Viking-Red sired crosses also performed better than the Holstein group, generating 17 cents and 4 percent more profit per day. For more information about this study, talk to your local Select Sires representative. u Photo by KeLeKi of 217MO1012 HIGORA JB.
ARE YOU BEING UNDER-SERVED
The real value of genetics Every dairy manager knows that what you do today, will impact your herd for generations and genetic decisions are no exception. Research shows that the true value of semen isn’t in the price but instead, in the genetics. With more industry-leading sires than any other stud, Select Sires is home to elite genetics supported by the highest fertility values. Currently, Select Sires offers 77 active Holstein young sires and 33 active proven sires with Sire Conception Rates (SCR) of +1.0 or higher. This fertility advantage isn’t limited to Holstein sires, in fact, there are 23 active proven and young sire Jerseys with SCR values of +1.0 or higher. Results regarding SCR and NM$ Data from Dr. Dechow’s research illustrates the value of SCR. For each point of SCR, research shows a $6.50 return on investment for dairies. In addition to the genetic contribution of elite sires, the return on investment is even more pronounced when you factor in the SCR value. Sires like 250HO13267 DUKE, 7HO12659 PASSAT, 7HO14320 ALPHABET and 14HO14587 HARLOW are great examples of breed-leading sires that combine high Net Merit (NM$) values with positive SCR to offer a significant return on investment. Dechow also analyzes the value of NM$ in his research and explains that dairies can justify paying $17.31 more per unit for each $100 in NM$ when purchasing proven sires and $15.91 more per unit when purchasing genomic young sires. With so many sires on the market, you have ample opportunity to tap into your herd’s full genetic potential when you use Select Sires genetics. Select Sires has a significant advantage in the available sires that provide superior fertility and a highly trained sales and support team to provide each operation with customized expert advice to achieve long-term success. u
In 2016, Hoard’s Dairyman published research from Dr. Chad Dechow titled “How much can we pay for high-end bulls,” in which he documents the return on investment for important industry traits.
