Elite gender SELECTed Semen: Another Tool in Your Toolbox by David C. Thorbahn, president and C.E.O. Select Sires is focused on developing “Precision Dairy Management” tools to move your business forward. These concepts are especially critical in this difficult business environment. One precision dairy management tool, which aids in your breeding strategy, is gender SELECTed™ semen with SexedULTRA™. Farming techniques have improved over the last 25 years in amazing ways and the concept of precision farming is the new frontier. Crop farming is now using precision techniques like satellite imaging that can plan fertilizer, seed and pesticide applications by the acre and yard. It has increased harvests and profitability by strategically applying resources. Dairy and beef industries are

2

moving to these types of approaches by providing tools and data to manage every cow individually. Sexed semen is a precision breeding strategy that has traditionally asked the question, “do you need more heifers?” The real advantage in gender SELECTed semen is calving heifers on time (earlier in many cases), safely and with ease of calving to assure maximum production

and reproduction in their first lactation. Start building your herd now in preparation for market cycle changes and strategically select the dams you want replacements from. In the sexed semen arena, Select Sires brings an unmatched combination of elite genetics and the largest sexed semen processing lab in North America. Select Sires is clearly the dominant genetic stud with the widest offering of elite, high Net Merit, high total performance and balanced breeding sires in both daughter proven and unproven genomic sires. Select Sires, in cooperation with Sexing Technologies, has made major investments in expanding the production capacity of our labs to meet the increasing demand for sexed semen for years to come. In this tough marketing environment, top dairymen are using sexed semen

to get replacements out of their top genetic females in the herd and using beef sires on the lower genetic end to increase the value of that calf to sell later. This is strategic management of genetic resources at its finest. Your cooperative continues to pioneer advancements in precision dairy management that will enhance your productivity and profitability through investments in research and technology. Our board of directors has been aggressively investing in new, revolutionary research to improve your herd. You can count on Select Sires for solutions to tough problems, and to provide you with the finest service to help implement those solutions. At Select Sires, “Your Success is Our Passion.” Contact your local Select Sires representative today to learn more about gender SELECTed semen.

The Evolution of gender SELECTed semen From the very beginning Select Sires has been a part of the development of commercially available sex-sorted semen. That process, which began more than a decade ago, has changed how A.I. is used on dairy farms around the world. Sex-sorted semen is based on a simple biological principle that the X, or female chromosome, is 4 percent larger than the Y, or male, chromosome allowing for a sophisticated combination of stains, lasers and a slight electrical charge to sort cells into the appropriate containers. Continual improvements Initially sex-sorted semen had a significantly lower conception rate than conventional semen. Ongoing research and development projects have led to faster sorting machines, more efficient protocols and a higher fertility product. Select Sires’ Program for Fertility Advancement™ (PFA™) has conducted numerous research projects in herds across the country. In 2013, results from nearly 7,000 inseminations in Holstein heifers across 41 PFA cooperator herds found that the SexedULTRA™ processing method led to a 4.5 percent rise in actual

conception rate. Currently, all semen available from Select Sires is processed using the SexedULTRA method. Another collaborative field trial, using PFA cooperator herds with Sexing Technologies is underway to investigate further improvements to the sex-sorted semen process. Select Sires is committed to not only providing the highest quality product, but ensuring it works before bringing it to the marketplace. How sex-sorted semen is used on farms has also changed. As genomic testing becomes more widespread and the best females in the herd can be identified with greater accuracy, sex-sorted semen can be targeted on the top of the herd while the bottom of the herd can be bred using more economic alternatives.

never been a time when Select Sires, home to the largest sexsorting laboratory in the world, has had more sires with more genetic merit available in gender SELECTed semen. Seven of Select’s chart-topping nine GTPI sires are available gender SELECTed as well as Canada’s No. 1 GLPI sire, 250HO1009 Mapel Wood BREWMASTER (EX-95). The breed’s, and Select’s, top four Holstein young sires, seven sires over +1,000 for Dairy Wellness Profit™ (DWP$™) and four sires over +3.00 for Type including the No. 1 sires, 7HO10506 Maple-Downs-I G W ATWOOD-ET (EX-90) and 7HO11596 Scientific B DEFIANT-ET (VG-87) are also among Select’s gender SELECTed sires. Overall, there are more than 30 proven and 100 young sires across all major dairy breeds that are a part of the gender SELECTed lineup. Between the evolution of sexsorted semen and the historic availability of gender SELECTed semen, there has never a been a more exciting time to use this technology. 

Our best are sexed Not only is gender SELECTed™ semen better than ever, there has

Select Sires offers nearly 140 gender SELECTed sires from every major dairy breed.

Keys to gender SELECTed Success Use of sexed semen will require a breeding gun designed to accommodate the smaller diameter, ¼ cc straws. Straws are to be thawed and handled identical to their ½ cc counterparts. However, the smaller diameter and compromised semen quality will make them more sensitive to coldshock and errors in semen handling. To maximize potential for success: • Thaw straws in 95-degree F water bath for 45 seconds. • Semen thawing and handling environments should be warm and draft free. • Warm all semen handling equipment including guns, sheaths and paper towels prior to contacting straws. • Only highly experienced technicians should use this product. • Recommend use at first or second service in wellmanaged, virgin heifers that have achieved greater than 60 percent of their mature weight by 14 months. • If used in cows, screen for fertility potential to optimize success: At first or second service vs. later services, firstcalf heifer vs. multiparous cows, 60 to 90 days after calving vs. shorter or greater intervals, healthy cows with no calving problems vs. unhealthy cows with dystocia, metritis, mastitis, low BCS, etc. and standing estrus vs. secondary signs or timed-A.I. • Use of estrus synchronization and breeding to observed estrus is encouraged, but use of timed-AI in the absence of observed estrus will likely increase semen cost per heifer born.

As the mercury rises this summer, looking at all available fertility values of individual sires can help improve pregnancy rates. And we know you demand more than just a pregnancy! Through evaluation of the Composite Fertility Index™ (CFI™) and Sire Conception Rate (SCR), along with intense semen quality evaluations the Superior Settler sires are determined. Turn to these elite Select sires for fertility without compromise when you need to produce quality pregnancies. Talk to your Select Sires representative or visit www.selectsires.com to see the complete list of 55 sires that carry the Superior Settler designation!

Genetic Progress Starts with a Pregnancy: Select Elite SCR Sires It is no secret, genetic progress starts with a pregnancy. Using an elite sire with low semen fertility can be risky and expensive unless using an elite genetic sire with excellent semen fertility. Select Sires has never compromised when it comes to semen fertility. As a result of research in Program for Fertility Advancement™ (PFA™) cooperator herds, processing improvements have been made in our laboratories. Because of this, Select Sires is home to more breed-leading Sire Conception Rate (SCR) sires that also provide outstanding genetic improvement for production, type and fitness or whatevr criteria is important to you. Breed-leading fertility is important, but so is reliability. There are 35 “7HO” sires that are more than +1.0 SCR with 95 percent Reliability or better. The top WT$ sires at Select Sires are designated WellnessPRO™ to identify the sires with the greatest opportunity to make a positive impact on wellness by reducing genetic risk for common dairy cow diseases. Like WT$, DWP$ includes wellness traits, but also covers important productivity traits impacting performance and additional profitability outcomes such as fertility, longevity and calving ability. The use of DWP$ offers selection emphasis comparable to other well-known selection indexes such as Net Merit (NM$) and Total Performance Index® (TPI®). This similarity makes DWP$ a practical consideration for producers who have historically used either index, but would like to apply additional selection emphasis on wellness traits. DWP$ can be used as a primary index by producers preferring to begin their sire search using a single value. An extensive review of peer-reviewed publications informed the development of both indexes, the weights and economic inputs. In addition, a team of dairy industry experts reviewed the DWP$ outcomes and foundational components.

The final product reflects their invaluable input and knowledge regarding animal breeding and producer application of genetic technology. The following chart depicts the general categories included in DWP$ and the weights included within the index.

DWP$ describes variation in expected profitability of dairy animals attributed to differences in genetic potential for production, fertility, longevity and risk of disease. The index differs from other economic indexes by including direct predictions for health events that have significant economic implications. By including more characteristics affecting profitability, DWP$ describes more genetic variation in profitability than other indexes. The more variation present within the population for an index or trait of interest, the greater the impact on selection decisions. Selection for DWP$ can result in a difference in lifetime profitability of more than $1,200 between the top 10th percentile and the bottom 10th percentile of ranked animals.1 To learn more about CLARIFIDE Plus and to see individual health trait STAs for Select sires visit www.selectsires.com. 

high rear udders and more shape and symmetry to the udder. They complemented each other and we doubled down on production and fitness traits” The ROBUST on PLANET cross did just that; creating sons that produce the profitable, freestallfriendly kind of cow that produces high volumes of milk with solid fitness traits and moderate stature. All in the family Besides the ROBUST sons in the Select Sires lineup, there are several members of his family that have the same package of production, fitness and moderate stature. ROBUST's maternal sister by Shottle, Roylane Shot Mindy 2079-ET (VG-86-DOM) and her granddaughter, S-S-I Suprsire Miri 8679-ET (VG-88-EX-MS-DOM), have played an important role in the Aggressive Reproductive Technologies™ (ART™) program. ROBUST's brother by 7HO10721 De-Su 521 BOOKEM-ET (VG-88GM), 7HO11752 Roylane Bookem BOB 5170-ET (EX-91) graduated into the proven lineup in April. 7HO11207 Roylane Boxer PUNCH 4311-ET (EX-92-GM) is a maternal brother to ROBUST and part of the Select Sires lineup. ROBUST sons by the numbers “ROBUST sons consistently transmit outstanding CFP and moderate stature along with ideal dairy strength,” explains Will. “Their daughters have nice udders, exceptional feet and legs, great fitness traits and Calving Ease.” Of the ROBUST sons at Select: • 11 are more than +1,100 Milk • 11 are positive for percent Fat and Protein • 14 are more than +100 Combined Fat and Protein (CFP) • 11 are less than 3.00 Somatic Cell Score (SCS) • All are more than +4.5 Productive Life (PL)

Select Sires’ Teat Dip Options Offer Solutions For more than 30 years, Ecolab’s 4XLA® and UDDERgold® 5-Star product lines have set the standard for teat dip performance around the world. The first acidified sodium chlorite (ASC) products introduced to the market, they have set the bar for germicidal efficacy, teat condition, barrier protection - and farmers have recognized the time-tested value of these products. There are a variety of reasons for the products’ on-going success and in fact, 4XLA and Aztec Gold™ are being used at an all-time high. • Powerful germicidal activity, driven by proprietary ASC technology • Unique combination of skin conditioning ingredients and lactic acid reduces hyperkeratosis • Effective against today’s mastitis pathogens, like Mycoplasma bovis and Prototheca • Efficient 15-second kill As the dairy industry trends toward more recycled bedding materials that create mastitis challenges, 4XLA, Aztec Gold and UDDERgold 5-Star provide superior germicidal performance driven by their proprietary ASC formulations. Formulation matters While there are now a number of competitive products on the market, these offerings struggle to match the performance of Ecolab’s products. The reason, says Ecolab Senior Chemist Dr. Joe Morelli, is that formulation matters. “You cannot look for a specific active ingredient or active ingredient level and expect the germicidal performance to be the same,” explains Morelli. “We’ve verified this time and again.” The lesson is that even if active ingredients look similar on the label, there is complicated interaction between actives and other

ingredients that simply make some products more effective than others. Industry market forces are turning dairy producers on to 4XLA, UDDERgold 5-Star and Aztec Gold. Over the last two years, the use of nonyl-phenol ethoxylates (NPE) in teat dips has become scrutinized. NPE is a common component in some teat dip formulations used to keep other ingredients in suspension and stable throughout a product’s shelf life. Particularly common in iodine-based products, some milk buyers and dairy product

manufacturers have worked to eliminate NPE from their incoming milk supply, due to concerns about the environmental and health implications of NPE use. Fortunately, 4XLA, UDDERgold 5-Star and Aztec Gold do not (and never have had) NPE as part of their formulation. As many teat dip manufacturers work to reformulate iodine-based products or introduce other NPE-free options, users of Select Sires’ ASC lineup can rest assured that they are using products that have always been NPE-free. “The NPE residue concern is real,” says Morelli. “Traditional iodine teat dips require significant levels to enable shelf stable formulations which puts them in an inherent residue risk disadvantage.” Another market development of note is the vote in April of 2015 by the National Organic Standards Board to recommend ASC for

approval as a teat dip germicide. While addition of ASC to the national list of products approved for use on organic farms is pending, many organic producers have turned to 4XLA and Aztec Gold to help them manage mastitis and milk quality. However, UDDERgold 5-Star is unlikely to receive organic approval, as it contains an unapproved synthetic ingredient. Mastitis control remains one of the great challenges of modern dairy farming. It is particularly important for farmers to keep cows out of the hospital pen now, as the industry experiences a downturn in milk prices. The tools offered by Select Sires to help keep mastitis in check, UDDERgold 5-Star, 4XLA, Aztec Gold and EfferCept™, are considered best-in-class technology, free of NPE, and pending organic acceptance. Use them with confidence!

Teat dips available from Select Sires are formulated to control mastitis and are NPE-free.

Select Sires Staff Takes Part in 41st Select Mating Service (SMS) Genetic Consultant Conference More than 100 Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) genetic consultants from Select Sires’ member organizations, international distributors and guests as well as other Select Sires staff met at the 41st annual SMS Genetic Consultant Conference, hosted by East Central/Select Sires April 24 through 27 in Wisconsin. While at the conference, genetic consultants participated in a day of continuing education. The group discussed the new Dairy Wellness Profit Index™ (DWP$™) and Wellness Trait Index™ (WT$™), talked over on-farm observations, received updates on the Aggressive Reproductive Technologies™ (ART™) program and on the strengths of the Select Sires lineup. They heard reports

about exciting sires waiting for their first daughter proofs and future Super Samplers™ and learned about enhancements to the SMS program, innovative technologies and recent trends. SMS added more animals (nearly 3 million) in 2015 to the program than any year in its 43-year history. SMS consultants continue to help dairy producers control genetic recessives,

haplotypes, inbreeding levels and provide a means to create custom selection indexes based on customer goals. The conference allows genetic consultants to view hundreds of Select-sired offspring and see the pattern each sire transmits to his daughters. “The three days of farm tours organized by the team at East Central illustrated the impact of valueadded genetics,” says Lon Peters, Select Sires vice president-dairy sire product services. “We visited extremely high-producing herds with a consistent type pattern that correlates to long-lived, high-producing cows. We had the opportunity to view numerous daughters of our sires which confirms the genomic prediction and

provides our genetic consultants with information to assist their customers.” Select Sires thanks the following herds for their hospitality: Summit Farms and Webb-Vue Holsteins, Plymouth Wis.; Abel Dairy Farms LLC, Eden, Wis.; Redtail Ridge LLC, Malone, Wis.; Rosendale Dairy, Pickett, Wis.; Rickland Dairy, Eldorado, Wis.; Kampy Holsteins, Brandon, Wis.; Weiland Dairy LLC, Columbus, Wis.; Pride View Dairy LLC, Randolph, Wis.; Tag Lane Dairy, Ixonia, Wis.; Kutz Dairy, Jefferson, Wis.; Sugar Creek Dairy, Elkhorn, Wis.; Larson Acres, Evansville, Wis.; Jeffrey-Way Holsteins, Belleville, Wis.; Mystic Valley Dairy LLC, Sauk City, Wis. and Endres Berryridge Farms, LLC, Waunakee, Wis.
