Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation POWERED BY BOLT Written by IGS

International Genetic Solutions (IGS) is an unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations fervently committed to enhancing commercial profitability. The collaboration has yielded the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle with over 17 million animals and 120,000+ genotypes. In keeping with our commitment to the cattle industry, IGS is pleased to announce the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT. The new genetic evaluation provides more predictive EPDs, better use of genomics, more accurate accuracy reported with EPDs, all with weekly evaluations. The announcement ushers in a new era in genetic evaluation — an era made possible by a genetic evaluation system dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools, owned by Theta Solutions, LLC). The concept for BOLT started in 2014 as a research endeavor between the American Simmental Association and Drs. Bruce Golden and Dorian Garrick. BOLT is, quite simply, the most revolutionary and powerful genetic evaluation system in existence. Its power allows IGS to leverage genetic evaluation methodology that was once thought to be untenable on large databases — methodology that significantly improves genetic prediction. In December 2016, IGS published a multibreed stayability, the industry’s first EPD using BOLT and the first single-step methodology applied to a large beef cattle database. Since that time, the IGS genetic evaluation team has worked toward fully implementing BOLT with an automated system that enables weekly evaluations for an entire suite of EPDs. As of May 5th, 2018, ASA is the first of the IGS partners to publish a full suite of EPDs generated by the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT. Each IGS partner has complete autonomy to determine the release date that best fits their organization. As such, the release of EPDs by the other IGS partners is likely to be staggered over the next

several weeks. As always, we look forward to your questions and comments about what you see. Here are the notable changes in the evaluation: Movement of EPDs and reranking. EPDs and indexes will change. These changes will be more dramatic for younger, lower accuracy cattle. The IGS team has tested the changes and proven the new EPDs result in superior predictions of genetic merit. Shrinking of EPD range. You will notice a reduction in the range of EPDs for most traits. The IGS evaluation team tested the statistical veracity of the reduction and it has proven to be in line with expectations based on the genetic variation in the population. Improved use of genomics. With the switch to the BOLT software, IGS will use single-step genomic evaluation on all EPDs. Single-step uses DNA markers, pedigree information, and phenotypic data simultaneously in the prediction of EPDs. Previously, molecular breeding values (MBVs) were calculated from the genomic information and those MBVs were blended in a separate procedure into the EPD predictions. The single-step method squeezes more information from the DNA markers than the previous approach allowed. Additionally, with single-step, the genomic information will not only enhance each EPD for the genotyped animals but also will be used in the EPD estimates of relatives. It is well established that DNA markers vary greatly in their effect on traits — ranging from large to virtually no impact. To leverage this biological fact in a statistically advantageous manner, the BOLT single-step method only uses markers that have a meaningful impact on the traits of interest, while ignoring those that have little to no effect. Research has shown that by using this approach, BOLT reduces statistical “noise” and thereby increases the accuracy of the EPD prediction compared to other single-step methods.

More accurate accuracy. In the previous IGS evaluation platform and all others in existence other than BOLT, the calculation of the accuracy associated with each EPD is achieved through “approximation” methods. It has long been known these methods are a less than optimal approach to the calculation of accuracy — tending to overestimate accuracy. By employing unique computing strategies that leverage both software and hardware efficiencies, BOLT performs what was previously unthinkable — utilizing a sampling methodology to calculate what is essentially true accuracy. Unlike approximated accuracies, BOLT-derived accuracies will result in predicted movements associated with possible change holding true over time. This is not the case with the previous IGS software or any other system currently in existence. While the IGS evaluation team and partners are excited to release this new chapter in genetic evaluation, the new genetic evaluation system will only realize its true potential if the selection is made using its EPD and index values. Hands down, there is no better (more accurate) way to select for quantitative traits than an EPD. Economic indexes predict net profit by weighing the EPD for economically relevant traits coupled with economic estimates. To compete with other protein sources, it is imperative that the beef industry adopts the best science and technology to make better breeding selection decisions. Please note, each IGS breed association has the latitude to publish the BOLT generated EPDs when the timing is right for their association. IGS breed associations include: American Red Angus, American Chianina, American Shorthorn, American Maine-Anjou, American Simmental, American Gelbvieh, Canadian Angus, Canadian Gelbvieh, Canadian Limousin, Canadian Simmental, Canadian Shorthorn and North American Limousin. 1. Visit www.selectsiresbeef.com or www.accelgen.com 2. On the right side, towards the top of the Select Sires home page you will find click here to order A.I. Certificates. At the top of the Accelerated Genetics home page towards the right corner you will find shop.

3. A Shop Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics page will appear with login information. Enter your account login and password. If you do not have an account with us yet, click donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have an account under the login information and create a new user account. 4. Once logged in, you can either edit past uncompleted orders or create a new one. 5. Creating a new order will take you to the purchasing page. Select a breed, sire and quantity of certificates or you can use the search bar to find the sire, then click add item. 6. After you have added all of your A.I. certificates to your cart, you will need to type in your membership numbers with the respective breed before you can continue.

7. Once you have entered your membership numbers, click continue.

8. Your order review will appear with the bull(s) code number, registration number, sire name, quantity and price. If your order is correct, click continue. If not, click back and it will take you back to your cart where you can edit your purchases. 9. A contact, payment, billing and shipping impromptu will appear, fill it out with the correct information and click continue. Be sure to select the correct cooperative when selecting for your area. Billing information MUST match the credit card being used for payment. 10. Next will appear a final review page that will have all of your account information and purchases. This will be the last prompt before completing your order. Be sure to check for any errors before clicking complete. 11. EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD) - The expected difference in performance of a bull’s progeny compared to the performance of another sire’s progeny. Accuracy (Acc.) - A measure of reliability of an EPD expressed between 0 and 1.0. Accuracies closer to 1.0 means the EPD is a more reliable estimate of a sire’s true genetic value for the trait. Proof Positive - Bulls that are .85 or higher accuracy for Birth Weight EPD. TMProof Positive is a trademark of Select Sires Inc. % Rank - Based on percentages, this indicates where a bull’s EPD ranks him in the entire population of his respective breed. Calving Ease Direct (CED) - is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to first calf heifers. A higher number is desirable. Birth Weight (BW) - predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to calves of another bull. Reported in pounds, a lower number is desirable. Weaning Weight (WW) - predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to calves of another bull. Reported in pounds, a higher number is desirable. Yearling Weight (YW) - predicts the difference in average 365-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull. Reported in pounds, a higher number is generally desirable. Yearling Height (YH) - The YH EPD predicts the difference in yearling hip height of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull. Reported in inches, ideal values vary depending on production environment. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) - expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) - expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference (SC) - The SC EPD predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny compared to progeny of another bull. Reported in centimeters, a larger number is desirable. Docility (Doc) - is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM or MCE) - is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Milk (MILK) - The milk EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves compared to the calves from daughters of another bull. Reported in pounds, ideal milk values depend heavily upon the nutritional environment of the herd. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW -Simmental); Milk and Growth (M&G - Hereford); Total Maternal (TM - Red Angus) - The EPD predicts the Weaning Weight of a bull’s daughters’ progeny and reflects both the milking ability of a bull’s daughters and the growth potential of their calves. Reported in pounds, higher numbers are generally desirable. Stayability (STAY - Red Angus & Simmental) - The stayability EPD predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters staying in production to at least six years of age compared to daughters of another bull. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. CARCASS TRAITS – EPDs for carcass traits are calculated using weighted averages of yearling ultrasounds and progeny carcass data. Carcass Weight (CW) - The EPD predicts the difference in hot carcass weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated at a given endpoint. Reported in pounds, a higher number is generally desirable. Marbling (MARB, IMF) - The EPD predicts the difference in average USDA Marbling score of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull at a similar end point. Reported in degrees of a Marbling score, higher values are desirable. Ribeye Area (REA) - The EPD predicts the difference in ribeye area of a bull’s progeny compared to the progeny of another bull and is an indicator of total muscle in the carcass. Reported in square inches, larger numbers are generally desirable. Fat (FAT) - The EPD predicts the difference in fat thickness of carcasses, measured between the 12th and 13th ribs, of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull. Reported in inches, lower values are desirable. Yield Grade (YG - Simmental) – The EPD predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull. Reported in tenths of a USDA YG, lower numbers are desirable.

$VALUE INDEXES are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. ANGUS: Cow Energy Value ($EN) - expressed in dollars saved per cow per year, the EPD assesses differences in cow energy requirements for daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $EN savings differences account for lactation energy requirements and mature size of cows. Weaned Calf Value ($W) - an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F) - an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G) - an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B) - an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. SIMMENTAL: All-Purpose Index (API) - Expressed in net dollars returned per cow exposed, evaluates Simmental sires being used on the entire cowherd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with a portion of the daughters retained for breeding and the steers and remaining heifers fed and sold on a carcass grade and yield basis. With the exception of shear force (tenderness), all EPDs are considered in this index. Terminal Index (TI) - Expressed in net dollars returned per cow exposed, evaluates the merit of sires when bred to mature Angus cows and all progeny are fed and sold on a carcass grade and yield basis. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability and MCE are not considered in this index. RED ANGUS: HerdBuilder Index (HB) - As the name indicates, implementation of the HerdBuilder Index will assist producers in building profitable herds. The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following production scenario: Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental), replacement heifers retained from within the herd, and all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid. GridMaster Index (GM) - While Red Angus has traditionally been known as a superior maternal breed, those who have retained ownership in Red Angus calves know of their potential to excel in the feedyard and ultimately hang a premium carcass. The GridMaster Index is built using the following production scenario: Red Angus bulls mated to cows (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental) and all progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid. HEREFORD: Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) - This is an index to maximize profit for commercial cow-calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows. Retained ownership of calves through the feedlot phase of production is maintained and the cattle are to be marketed on a CHB pricing grid. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) - This is a terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are used on British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB pricing grid. There is no emphasis on milk or fertility since all cattle will be terminal. This index promotes growth and carcass. SHORTHORN: British Maternal Index ($BMI) - As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity.
