The very quintessence of innovation, Azimut Grande Trideck features a new living area, never seen before on a yacht this size: the Sea View Terrace. As the latest addition to the traditional triple-decker, the Sea View Terrace is an aft raised “mezzanine” deck. Thanks to this layout innovation, Grande Trideck offers four terraces, completing a visual effect of cascading terraces from the Sundeck down to the sea.

s a yachting enthusiast, i missed hitting this past year’s global boat-show circuit, which starts in September and runs into the spring. The virtual events we held—and other events we participated in—during the height of the pandemic helped get the word out about the latest and greatest in all things marine. But the face time with fellow yachtsmen, and getting to see, feel and touch the new models and gear, just wasn’t there. I missed seeing that one yacht that makes my heart race a bit. The one vessel that starts hours of interesting chats with friends and family. The one boat that fills my smartphone photo album and gets me thinking that maybe it’s the yacht going into my slip next season. ¶ Typically, over the course of six or so months, countless boat and yacht models, gear, electronics, and accessories are unleashed to the public, satiating the need for the new. And starting in Cannes, France, this month, boat-show season should be back in full swing. ¶ Yachting’s staff is happily going on the road for the next half year to bring you all that is new in the yachting world. Based on the pace of information hitting my inbox, there is

going to be plenty to see, feel, touch and, of course, tell you all about. ¶ Here are just a few recent bits we’ve heard about. ¶ The Pershing 6X—the latest in the builder’s five-model X series—is slated to debut this month. The builder says that with twin 1,550 hp MANs, this 62-footer should make 48 knots. We’re planning to run the boat in Cannes, and we’ll let you know how it does. ¶ The Wally Why200 is also slated to debut overseas. The nearly 89-foot yacht’s renderings show an intriguing 398-square-foot master stateroom in the bow with a 200-degree view of the ocean. We will be going in for a deep dive on this yacht, for sure. ¶ Otam Yachts will launch its one-off 70HT, which can reportedly hit 53-plus knots. ¶ Azimut Yachts is launching several new models this fall, including the Grande Trideck, Magellano 66 and 53 Fly. ¶ Much more is coming from builders such as Princess Yachts, Viking Yachts, Riviera, Benetti, Grand Banks, Palm Beach, Maritimo, Galeon Yachts, Aquila Boats, Ocean Alexander, Horizon, Hinckley, and so many beyond what this page can accommodate. ¶ The return of boat-show season is here, and it’s a time filled with promise. There are so many new yachts and so much new gear that there will be something for everyone. On with the show.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
“50 Years of Family Memories” (July) brings me back to 1975, when I was taking a Maco 22 from Key Largo, Florida, to Eleuthera, the Current, in the Bahamas. Stopped at Chub Cay when it was just a motel. Blackhawk had to wait for high tide to enter. [Spotting that yacht was] a big deal for me, being from Indiana. My folks had just built a house on Eleuthera, which our family still enjoys. ¶ That was the first of three small boats I’ve taken over, over the years—the last being with my three sons, stopping in Bimini and enjoying the Big Game Club and the Hemingway memorabilia before the fire. ¶ Eleuthera really hasn’t changed over the years. ¶ Our youngest son, Ed, is in the “yachting business” [with an online sailing store] from the cornfields in Indiana. —b i l l f u r r y v i a e m a i l

The partnerships coordinator, 35 years. ¶ “We love our show,” Piffard says. “Skipping it in 2020 was very sad.” ¶ Many yachtsmen who attend boat shows each year felt the same way during the pandemic and are thrilled this fall,
as traditional boat shows return. The Newport show is back just in time for its 50th anniversary. The Norwalk Boat Show in Connecticut, a staple for 40-plus years, will run September 23-26. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, held for more than 60 years, is set for October 27-31. ¶ Piffard says there’s no question that boaters are most of all excited about shows returning: “Ticket sales are off the charts right now.”

Nine hulls are under construction, with the first of those—and its kite wing— scheduled to debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in France. The kite wing and its components, including winches, are stowed in a box at the yacht’s bow. The kite wing deploys to nearly 400 feet above the boat and, according to the builder, adds as much as 5 knots of cruising speed to the standard 6- to 8-knot ride while reducing consumption with e-motors, extending the vessel’s overall range. Silent-Yachts also says this new build adds more-powerful solar panels, with the Silent 60’s 42 pieces generating 17 kWp. That’s compared to the Silent 55’s 30 panels, which generate 10.8 kWp.

none of us needs any more reason to be frustrated about the COVID-19 pandemic. But if you are just now seeing some seriously cool lighting systems on the water and trying to figure out how the boat owners got them, you can absolutely blame the coronavirus for keeping you in the dark. ¶ Imtra, the US representative for UK-based Lumishore, had been offering the Lumishore Lux lighting system exclusively to boatbuilders until early 2020, when the system made its debut for the general public at the Miami International Boat Show—“right before the
world shut down,” says Tom “TJ” Orr, Imtra’s lighting project manager. ¶ The plan had been to educate owners of boats up to about 90 feet length overall about how the Lumishore Lux system could give them the kinds of custom effects they see on superyachts, without the typical customization pricing and installation headaches. The lights can be installed in all kinds of combinations above the waterline, below the waterline or both. They can be set up to change colors, sweep, strobe, pulse with music and more, all depending on what kinds of effects the

boat owner wants. ¶ But with limited ways to demonstrate the Lumishore Lux system for boat owners in person, Imtra instead expanded the work it was doing directly with boatbuilders. That’s how, going into summer of this year, an increased number of hulls started making their way onto the water with all kinds of theatrical lighting effects. The Lumishore Lux system was available to everybody, including for refits, but most people heard about it only if they were buying a new boat. ¶ “Mag Bay has this standard,” Orr says. “Chris-Craft is offering it. Pavati is offering it for their boats as an option. Jarrett Bay, Bayliss, F&S and Spencer are all custom builders. It’s one of the things they tell people about. They’ll contact us, and we walk them through to find out where the people want the lights. We make it as customizable as they want to get.” ¶ Barrett Howarth, the vice president at Mag Bay Yachts, says that on his yard’s 42-foot model, customers can choose the Lumishore Lux system as an option in whatever parts of the boat they want. “We’ll put in strip lighting, underwater lighting, the downlights. It’s a pretty nice deal,” he says. “I can have my bait tank going with a strobe-and-disco look, my tower lit up another color—really anything.” ¶ Almost every buyer of a Mag Bay boat these days is adding the Lumishore Lux system as an option, he says. And based on that business, he thinks that having a fully customizable

ONE LINKED SYSTEM In the past, onboard and underwater lighting could not be linked into scenes without specialty third-party systems and computer programs, says Tom “TJ” Orr at Imtra. “Now, you can say, ‘Oh, I want the lights in the ceiling to be blue and my courtesy lights to be purple and the neon lights around the cabinets to go red, and I’m going to call this scene XYZ.’”

lighting system on board a boat will become like having a Seakeeper or a large multifunction display. It will ultimately become something expected or standard. ¶ “As a side project, I’m building myself an 18-foot Boston Whaler, and I’ve actually made provisions in my build for lighting,” he says. “I’m doing a full package: speaker lights, undergunwale lights, underwater lights. Whether I use it or not, that’s not really important. I think it’s important to have it on there.” ¶ A full setup for a smaller boat like that Whaler, Orr says, can run about $2,500. For a midrange sport-fisherman with above- and below-waterline lights, the cost likely won’t top $15,000. ¶ “It’s super-affordable for how advanced it is,” Orr says. “This is the most advanced thing on the market—and the only thing at this level that’s plug-and-play.” ¶ Lumishore’s interface is simple to learn, Howarth says, and when boaters start using it, they get jazzed about ideas for personalizing their ride. A single screen tap can change the boat’s lights from standard white to theatrical scenes of all kinds. ¶ “They give you a high level of customization,” Howarth says. “You can have different intensities of light in different zones. You can have one zone changing and one zone sweeping. You can have them strobing. You can dip down some of the lights 10 or 15 percent so you’re not blinding your bait. It’s fun stuff.”

IF YOU LIKE LUXURY WITH A DASH OF SPICE, THE TIARA YACHTS 48 LS IS REASON TO CELEBRATE. B Y L E N N Y R U D OW

In moments, the propellers were spinning at a combined 315 rotations per second, and we were traveling across the water at a hair-whipping top hop of 52 knots. That little voice inside my head wanted to whisper, “Aahhhhh,” and shout, “Woohoo!” at the same time. ¶ At 4,500 rpm, the 48 LS zips along at 33.3 knots while the triple Verados consume 61 gallons per hour, providing a 330-nautical-mile range. Those are noteworthy numbers for Tiara’s largest outboard-powered yacht ever, designed in concert with the mega-Verados to provide a power-packed performance experience. ¶ Sure, 1,800 hp is a lot of oomph, but there’s more to the package than raw power. The engine’s midsection cradles the power head to minimize noise and vibration, and its timing is tuned to reduce induction and injection sound levels. Tiara designed the helm station with sliding side doors, a front wraparound windshield, and an aft roller bulkhead that drops down from the hardtop. Net result? When I fully enclosed the helm and cruised 48'4" across the water’s surface, the sound levels inside peaked at a LENGTH OVERALL spectacularly low 67 decibels. (Normal conversation creates 60 to 65 decibels, and on most open-helm outboard-powered 14'2" MAXIMUM boats, I hear that much volume when idling along at 1,500 rpm.) BEAM ¶ Reducing the noise and vibration boosts the luxury level aboard, as does the interior volume belowdecks. There’s a pair

The after end of the 48 LS has multiple convertible features. The transom area is capped off with an articulating settee that spins 360 degrees for watching the sunset off the stern, or facing the forward settee and dinette to provide dining space for eight. Electrically actuated backrests also go all the way down to turn this settee into a lounger or sun pad. At the press of another button, the entire portside gunwale and hullside fold down to expand the cockpit, creating a deck-level terrace. And while the kids can have a blast jumping off the side of the boat, people more mobility-challenged will notice the swim ladder housed inside the terrace. That ladder extends 4 feet down from deck level, making reboarding the boat a cinch. ¶ Take a close look at the stainless steel used in that swim ladder. Also, grab the handhold near the sink, grill and fridge abaft the helm station and give it a yank. Then take a peek at the hinges on the flip-down seat in the back of the forward cockpit settee, as well as the dinette-table pedestals and the dive-door locking latch. All of these metal parts are oversize and polished stainless steel, and as a general rule, the hardware on this yacht looks battleship-worthy. ¶ After I spent an afternoon aboard the Tiara 48 LS, I had a hard time deciding whether it’s more of a sport yacht or more of a luxury machine. One thing I know for sure: It’s built for some uniquely athletic lounging.
CONSTRUCTION ZONE
The Tiara 48 LS has an infused hull strengthened by structural foam coring and carbon fiber. The stringer grid is also infused, and the transom is constructed with two-ply infused composites backed by a reinforcement grid. Hollow drumming-water noises were nonexistent during my time on board, and the 48 LS felt solid underfoot.

t’s a quest as old as time: heading to sea to forage dinner. Early mariners were limited by the wind’s direction and their simple sail plans, a limitation that internal-combustion engines fixed, but the basic problem remained. Namely, where to go to catch dinner or land prized pelagic species. ¶ High-powered radar came next, allowing mariners to see where birds were congregating, but radar range is limited by physics and the Earth’s curvature, and constantly repositioning boats costs money and time. Now, SiriusXM Marine’s Fish Mapping service yields information on a scale that radar can’t touch, and its satellite-communications receivers deliver it in an intuitive and graphically rich format. ¶ SiriusXM built a name for itself among boaters around 2005 with its Marine weather services. In 2019, SiriusXM unveiled its Fish Mapping service, which provides detailed information about where anglers are most likely to find fish. While Fish Mapping has been available since then to owners with compatible Garmin multifunction displays, Furuno and Navico (Simrad) recently released software updates that allow Fish Mapping’s graphical data layers to be displayed on their compatible screens, using dedicated satellite antennas and receivers (see sidebar). ¶ “Fish Mapping includes eight data layers that are compiled to better put you on the bait,” says Dan Dickerson, SiriusXM’s director of marine and aviation services. These layers are built using water-temperature data that’s gathered by the Weather Channel (SiriusXM’s parent company); this information is sent to
Maxar Technologies, which compiles it with data that’s collected by their own satellites. “Maxar puts [Fish Mapping] in a finished product,” Dickerson adds. “We’re just the delivery guys.” ¶ To access Fish Mapping, anglers need to sign up for the month-to-month subscription service ($100 per month, which includes all of SiriusXM’s Marine Offshore weather features). The subscription can be winterized during the off season. Information is transmitted to the yacht’s antenna and receiver, which shares it via Ethernet with all networked displays. ¶ Fish Mapping’s eight data layers are: weed lines (concentrations of buoyant algae and plants), sea-surface height anomalies (areas where the sea’s surface is higher due to eddies, fronts, downwelling and upwelling), sea-surface temperature contours (contour lines that graphically depict different sea-surface temperatures), sea-surface temperature front strengths
(the estimated strengths of ocean fronts), 30-meter subsurface sea temperatures (water temperatures around 100 feet below the surface), contours of plankton concentration (areas plentiful in plankton), plankton-front strengths (pairs plankton-rich areas with areas lacking plankton), and fishing recommendations (estimates for where anglers are likely to find specific species). ¶ Each layer is displayed atop a user’s selected cartography, with the exception of fishing recommendations, which is overlaid atop cartography and any of the other seven
available data layers. Only one Fish Mapping layer selection can be displayed at once (read: no quad-screen views that depict four different selections at once). ¶ While this is a lot ofcomplex information, it’s presented in a clean and graphically engaging way with a single purpose. ¶ Anglers “can save time and fuel by letting the technology point them to where the fish [might] be,” says Dave Dunn, Garmin’s senior director of marine sales. ¶ While each marine-electronics manufacturers’ hardware and operating systems differ, the information is exactly the same. “There are subtle differences in the user interface, but the data is the data,” Dickerson says. These differences mainly involve each manufacturer’s choice of displayed color palettes. ¶ As with all time-sensitive data, expiration dates matter, and SiriusXM updates Fish Mapping layers regularly. “Sea-surface temperature contours are updated every three hours, while everything else is updated daily,” Dickerson says, adding that fishing recommendations are updated Tuesday and Friday mornings (Eastern Standard Time). ¶ While fishing recommendations are low-hanging fruit, the biweekly update rate encourages users to parse fresher data themselves. “Fishing takes place in areas of predation,” says Tim Moore, Furuno’s East Coast general manager. He suggests that new users start by examining plankton-concentration contours and plankton-front-strength layers. “Where plankton are, fish feed,” he says. ¶ The next steps involve looking for plankton-rich areas that intersect with sea-surface temperature front strengths. “[Anglers] go right to the fishing recommendations,” Dickerson says. “But it’s not that simple. I’m cautious about the recommendations. Plankton fronts and temperature fronts are my favorites. When they overlap, it’s Christmas.” ¶ Moore agrees: “If you’re willing to put in the time

L ITT L E E A R S SiriusXM forecasts and Fish Mapping information are transmitted from SiriusXM’s geostationary satellites to dedicated onboard antennas and receivers. Users buy a subscription from SiriusXM, but antennas and receivers ($450 to $800) are purchased from the multifunction-display manufacturer. Furuno and Navico use Shakespeare-built equipment, and Garmin builds its own kit.
to learn all the features of Fish Mapping, you’re going to be a better fisherman.” ¶ Users can overlay each of the eight data layers atop their choice of cartography, which ensures a familiar feel. “Fish Mapping makes it easy for anglers to see where their boat is located in relation to [their] desired fishing locations,” says Stephen Thomas, Simrad’s product director. ¶ In addition to finding fish, the service helps anglers save fuel and time. “When we leave the dock, [anglers] each have five or six specific places in mind to fish,” Dickerson says. “Fish Mapping shows us which one will most likely be productive that day.” This predictive capability, Moore says, is especially important for commercial operations. “Charter guys will pay for anything that helps increase the chances that their clients go home happy.” ¶ Given Fish Mapping’s price point, its flexible,
no-contract subscription plans, and the fact that boaters also get SiriusXM’s Marine Offshore weather (a $60 value) with the monthly fee, the cons list is short. That said, Fish Mapping currently works only in North America, and its range is limited to 150 nautical miles from shore. ¶ “We own our own geostationary satellites, and we only have two in use,” Dickerson says. “So [the satellite’s] footprint is the range of our coverage.” ¶ Also, owners with satcom systems can’t use their antennas to catch Fish Mapping’s data. “The data isn’t on the internet, so it’s not possible to extend the range,” Dickerson says. ¶ But if your angling ambitions fall within SiriusXM’s range, Fish Mapping could be an ideal tool to help land that prize species—rather than engaging in the also-ancient anglers’ art of embellishing about the ones that got away.

GOST’s IDP antenna is designed to work with the satellite-based GOST Specter vessel-tracking interface. An accelerometer in the antenna lets the system automatically adjust its position-reporting rate—from once every 24 hours to once every 120 seconds— whenever the vessel is traveling faster than 2 knots. The IDP antenna ($1,300) also enables two-way satellite communications with the vessel. GOST, gostglobal.com
ACR’s Bivy Stick ($350 plus airtime fees) two-way satellite communicator can be paired with a smartphone, allowing users to send and receive text messages, share their location information, access maps, and receive weather updates. If you cruise with a Vetus-built bow thruster, the CANverter ($520) gateway device lets you monitor and control it (and other Vetus products) via NMEA 2000-compatible devices, such as a multifunction display. M A L L O R C A N TA S T E M A K E R Michelin-starred chef Marc Fosh has elevated Palma de Mallorca’s culinary scene by kristin baird rattini
T
MARC FOSH’S THREE MEALS ON MALLORCA CAN SIMONETA (Canyamel): The chef, David Moreno, does a nice fusion
of Mexican and Mallorcan cooking. The location is stunning as well, the same coastline as Sa Pleta. DAICA (Llubi): I’m tipping this restaurant to get a Michelin star soon. Caterina Pieras cooks Mallorcan food that is beautifully done. LAS TERRAZAS DEL BENDINAT (Portals Nous): Hotel Bendinat’s huge terrace restaurant is right by the sea. I always go for the sea bass baked in salt; it’s a lovely dish.
What inspired your cookbook, Modern Mediterranean? I wanted to focus on the ingredients. It’s organized by ingredient, not by course. I was thinking about when you go the market and find a fantastic ingredient; here are some different things you can do with it. What do you enjo enjoy about Palma’s market? It’s a wonderful place. You can have a glass of Champagne and oysters right in the middle of the fish market. It has become a sociable thing. It’s a fantastic location where you can see our fresh produce and eclectic mix of seafood. Many traditional markets are dying, but Palma’s is thriving. What are your favorite Mallorcan ingredients? Soller prawns have a very intense flavor. They’re absolutely amazing. Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc is a pure, clean salt. Solivellas olive oil is fruity and light. The sea breeze hits the olives all year, which gives the oil a distinct flavor.
British chef Marc Fosh visited Mallorca 27 years ago, and he instantly knew the island would be his culinary muse.

here’s no doubt that mallorca, Spain, put its best face forward when celebrated chef Marc Fosh first visited the island in 1994 to decide if he wanted to move there. “The sun was shining. There was a beautiful blue sky,” he recalls. “I was driving through olive groves, orange groves, almond fields. As a chef, I knew there was going to be fantastic ingredients at my disposal.” ¶ Those fantastic local ingredients have defined Fosh’s two-plus decades of inventive Mediterranean fare, particularly at his eponymous restaurant in Palma. The first British chef to earn a Michelin star in Spain, Fosh has led the transformation of Palma’s PALMA DE MALLORCA dining landscape from a “culinary desert” into an international hotspot. ¶ He’s now bringing his star power to the coastal town of Canyamel. SPAIN His new restaurant, Sa Pleta, centers around his wood-burning grill. “Fire is the most primitive form of cooking,” Fosh says. “We’re experimenting with how to use it in a modern way.”

The Newport International Boat Show celebrates two landmarks this year - its 50th anniversary and the 15th year of the Newport For New Products (“NFNP”) program. NFNP is a highlight of the Newport International Boat Show (“NIBS”) and one of the leading award programs in the marine industry. With the partnership of Cruising World, Sailing World and Yachting magazines, the year’s first showing of new boats and boating products will be recognized before, during and after the Newport Show. Awards will be given for Best New Powerboat, Best New Sailboat, Best New Boating Product, Best New Navigation Product and Best New Weather Gear (wearable). The NFNP program also includes a “Green” category, and each new boat or product accepted into the program will be eligible for this award with one winner chosen for “Best Green Boat” and one winner for “Best Green Product” based on the benefits and features of the entry. This year’s NFNP program is open to foreign and domestic boats and boating products launched after April 1, 2020 that will make their official U.S. boat show debut at the 2021 Newport International Boat Show. Due to the interruptions of the pandemic last year, we have accepted new boats and products from both 2020 and 2021. Imported boats and boating products that have been exhibited and sold at boat shows outside the U.S. are also eligible. These strict criteria legitimize the NFNP awards which are judged based on innovation, value to the consumer, safety and aesthetics as determined by industry experts. Judging of the Best New Boats and Products takes place on opening day and the winners will be announced and publicized on Friday, September 17, 2021. New debuts are marked with distinctive NFNP decals and flags to help make them easy to find. The Newport For New Products program also features a “People’s Choice Award.” Boat Show fans will be able to vote online on the NIBS website for their favorite new boat in the show. Votes will be tallied and the winner of the 2021 NFNP People’s Choice Award will be announced Friday morning at the Awards Ceremony. And to sweeten the pot, one lucky People’s Choice voter will win a $250 American Express gift card. We hope that you’ll join us at the 2021 Newport International Boat Show to see for yourself all the exciting new boats, gear and accessories that will be on display. See you on the docks!

Add .50% to above rates for: Houseboats or High performance boats. Reduce .25% from above rates for 100% Electric motor boats. Each rate adjuster applies independently; multiple rate adjusters may apply for a single request. Maximum loan term based on loan amount. Maximum loan amount is calculated using an advance percentage determined by FICO score and multiplied by NADA guide base wholesale value with add-ons; if not listed in NADA guide, then multiplied by 80% of BUC low retail value. Other rates with different loan terms are available. Example of a refinance recreational use boat loan: A $65,399 loan (includes a $399 processing fee) for 5 years with a fixed interest rate of 3.74% would have an APR of 3.99% and 60 monthly payments of $1,196.78. This is only an example and the APR and processing fee may differ for your specific transaction. Loans with longer terms may have higher rates. The Azimut Yachts 86S is known for its eye-popping 40-knot speed. by victor tan
A
zimut yachts’ foray into high-performance vessels began with the 86S. Twin 2,000 hp 16V 2000 MTU diesels power the 86-footer to a 40-knot top hop. The ride is made smoother by the 86S’s deep-V hull form with a 13-degree transom deadrise. ¶ The master stateroom has side windows and a breakfast nook, and there are a guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP. The enclosed salon is made into an open-air space when the sunroof and cockpit-connecting door are opened.¶ At press time, there were eight Azimut 86Ss on the market, ranging from $1,416,845 to $3,379,087.
F R OM T H E A R C H I V E “Compared with Azimut’s more sedate motoryachts, the ride of this sporting version is rather like the difference between a sports car and a town car. The suspension on the sports version tends to be much firmer, and that is the case here. A certain not-unwelcome harshness in the ride tends to cut in at speeds over 30 knots, giving a greater feeling of performance.” —Yachting, October 2007
The Azimut Yachts 86S came with either water jets or surface-drive propellers.

seems that, so far, the swarm of new buyers has left many rides from the 1980s and ’90s tangled in tumbleweed. “Boats with half an acre of parched teak decking or a few dozen cylinders to overhaul can be a bargain,” my pal said. “Coyle, if you want to find a boat in this market, you need to be looking at one with a VCR and cassette player screwed into the entertainment center. Forget about USB charging stations.” ¶ My pal provided an example I’d had a crush on since I first sea-trialed it in the late 1980s. “Three staterooms and two 1,100 hp diesels for the price of a travel trailer.” ¶ “That’s unbelievable,” I said while ogling the images. ¶ “Today’s herd of buyers don’t understand boats like this,” my pal replied. “They were weaned on personal computers and hours of Star Trek reruns. When they want something, they push a button.” ¶ I was lost in the dream until my pal spoke up. “You can dock a boat without a joystick and handle a wrench, right?” ¶ The drooling subsided as common sense got the best of me. ¶ “A wrench? How much a hole is it to rebuild those motors?” I asked. ¶ My pal mumbled the numbers, which amounted to two travel trailers. “Coyle,” he said, “at least it has engines.”

A
sales pal called recently to share a customersatisfaction test that he says has become the new normal. ¶ “Dealer orders outboard boat from builder. Builder sends boat without motors screwed to the transom. The supply chain’s in a knot, for God’s sake.” ¶ His solution? Recycle. ¶ Among the countless lessons learned during the pandemic, we all discovered the frailties of our “just-in-time” supply chain when our toilet paper failed to arrive just in time. Now, it’s boats that are flying off the shelves, and builders are playing catch-up. My pal predicts that it might take several years to whittle down the backlog, so he’s promoting well-cured laminates and analog tech for those who can’t wait. ¶ What builders had hoped would be an orderly marine-industry cattle drive of newly minted boaters out of lockdown and into a new ride has instead become a stampede. “They just can’t get enough of the latest marine technology,” my pal said. ¶ Folks running re-treads on their deck shoes might recall that electronic wizardry and salt water have at times had a corrosive relationship, but my pal insists that today’s buyers
