Inside Ant’s £200k showbiz wedding Plus his ex-wife Lisa Armstrong’s revenge

A

nt McPartlin’s second wedding last week was a lavish star-studded affair. No expense was spared to celebrate the TV presenter’s marriage to his former PA AnneMarie Corbett, 43, in Hampshire on 6 August. The couple’s 100 guests stayed in £1k a night rooms at a stately home hotel, while the bride and groom’s honeymoon suite cost £5k. Ant, 45, made sure their loved ones had a weekend to remember by treating them to spa treatments. His telly sidekick Declan Donnelly, 45, acted as his best man, a role he took on for Ant’s previous wedding to ex-wife Lisa Armstrong in 2006. Ant proposed to AnneMarie – who he has been dating since 2018, after splitting from Lisa – on Christmas Eve, with a £200k ring he designed himself. Despite the expense,

sources said they wanted their wedding to be low-key. One said before the nuptials, “Neither of them want the razzmatazz of a showbiz wedding. They just want their nearest and dearest with them. It will be a simple, but beautiful ceremony, without the glare of the spotlight. They’re both extremely excited and can’t wait.” Money is no issue for the host of Saturday Night Takeaway and I’m A Celeb, who is thought to have a £31m fortune, and the wedding looks to have cost in excess of £200k. Meanwhile, Lisa, 44, showed she’d moved on by defiantly posting a photo of herself with her new man, electrician James Green, as they celebrated their first anniversary on holiday. “Staycation,” she wrote, adding three hearts. Well, they say the best revenge is a happy life, and it seems Lisa has found it!

‘I’M MORE CONFIDENT THAN EVER’ Lisa Riley has said that she’s feeling “more confident and comfortable”, despite gaining weight. The Emmerdale actress, 45, previously lost 12st in 2012, and dropped down from a size 30 to a 14 after overhauling her lifestyle, but has seen her weight creep up in the past year. She revealed that the extra pounds don’t bother her, saying, “At the end of it all, I know how lucky I am. I feel more confident and comfortable in my own skin than ever before.”

The fifth series will air in 2022.

Holly Willoughby and Dan Baldwin have won a planning battle to extend their £3m home, despite complaints from angry neighbours. The presenter, 40, and her TV producer husband, 46, have been given the OK to build a first-floor and front extension to their sixbedroom house in London, which they bought in 2011. One furious local said, “Having the noise all week, all day, for so many months is not the standard of living in such an expensive area to live. I do not pay taxes to get this level of disruption. It is not quality of life.”

Katie Nicholl said, “George is an absolute pleasure to be around, and that’s down to his parents. I don’t think William and Kate have made a big thing of saying to George, ‘One day, you will be king.’ They want to protect him from that moment, so it’s an idea that’s being introduced to him gradually.” According to a US report, the pair are “nervous” about Prince George’s future, with them “shielding” all their kids. “Kate and William are being more selective about the events he attends,” a source told US Weekly.

The couple have asked the media to respect their privacy and planted 40-foot hedges in front of their Kensington Palace home, so their children can play outside in peace. There’s a no-fly zone at Anmer Hall, the family’s country estate in Norfolk, so helicopters can’t take photos of them. William previously said he will “fight for [the children] to have a normal life”, adding, “I want to bring up my children in a happy, stable, secure world, and that is so important to both of us as parents. I want George to grow up in a real, living environment. I don’t want him growing up behind palace walls. He has to be out there.”

It’s been four months since Derek Draper finally returned home after being admitted to hospital with the coronavirus back in March 2020, but wife Kate Garraway has revealed that they are still discovering more and more problems with his health. While discussing the subject of long COVID on Good Morning Britain, Kate said, “I know Derek is an extreme example, but there are more long COVID symptoms emerging. All the time there are more issues. Initially, it was exhaustion, but more are presenting.” On the show, she spoke to Dr Amir Khan, who said, “It’s estimated that 2million people across the UK are suffering from long COVID. And symptoms can include extreme fatigue, brain fog, problems with vision, problems with pain, difficulty breathing, palpitations and chest

pain – all sorts of things,” to which Kate, 54, added, “And that’s only the ones we know, isn’t it, Dr Khan? Because more and more are emerging of different bits of the body that have damage.” Derek, 53, has seemingly been subject to these symptoms and more. Kate previously revealed he was one of the worst-affected patients in the country, and the virus left his body ravaged, including holes in his heart and lungs, and having lost 8st due to muscle wastage. Despite all this, though, family life goes on at home, with Kate and their children Darcey, 15, and Billie, 12, transforming their house to accommodate Derek’s needs. Last week, Kate was spotted out for dinner, with Derek in a wheelchair, by a member of the public.

health first. We forget how amazing our body is, and it’s even just starting with the little things, like your hands are so clever, how your legs work, and that you can get up and walk around from A to B. Some people don’t have that privilege. So, it’s about loving who you are and what your body does for you, and having gratitude for how your body is designed. There’s only one of you, you’re unique and there’s nobody else like you. How special is that?

And the message is about self-love in this campaign, isn’t it? I love this campaign because I think, before you go on any diet, you’ve got to learn to love yourself first, and we can often forget where we need to start. If you love yourself, you treat yourself well and you’ll put the goodness back into your body and exercise. You’ve got to start with yourself, and that’s why I love WW – it covers all pillars of your health. It looks at how much and what you’re putting in your body, your mental health and

your sleep, and you’ve got so much support. We put so much pressure on ourselves in life and society, especially now. Do we really need body pressures as well?

Did your diet and physical activity change during lockdown? Yeah, during the first one. That’s why I had to join WW, because I suppose I kind of gave up really.

Has your attitude to weight loss changed since then? I had more time to concentrate on myself before, whereas I haven’t got that luxury any more. My lifestyle has changed, so I had to do something that fit in with my schedule, and things that I wasn’t going to beat myself up about.

‘Your body is so clever’

How much weight have you lost?

But nothing else mattered at the time – the whole country was in fear. It was like your health didn’t matter when it really should have been at the forefront of everything and been your number-one priority. But I was eating like it was the last supper, and I didn’t bother to go down the park. So, I’m really happy that I joined WW

because it’s made me accountable again. I’ve got the support there, as well, and you meet people who are an inspiration.

I fluctuate between a size 14-16. Before, I was an 18-20 and couldn’t run after my son. Now, I can, and that’s one of the reasons I needed to do this. I just had no energy before, and I feel like a better mum now. I’ve got a lot more energy and we do lots more stuff together. I try to incorporate activities, like paddleboarding, into our daily lives and holidays.

Has your view on your image changed since you’ve become a mum?

Oh my God, I’m so grateful for the body that I’ve been blessed with. I might have struggled with the pounds and putting on weight, but your body is so clever, and the fact that it’s grown a little baby is amazing. I’m a size 12-14. I think I’ll stop there because if I’m trying to get to a size 8-10, it’s just not how I’m built and I haven’t got the time to get there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s brilliant to have goals, but for me, it’s also about being mentally well. I spoke to my coach about sleeping. My sleeping habit was terrible, and that’s why I just kept putting on the weight, so that was one of the big things that we needed to sort out. Born in Plymouth on 21 May 1994, Tom is the eldest son of Debbie and Robert Daley, and he has two younger brothers. His dad was his number-one fan and championed his career until his death from a brain tumour, aged 40, in 2011, when Tom was just 17. “He never saw me win an Olympic medal, get married, have a child, teach me to drive, or have a pint down the pub,” Tom said.

Tom began knitting and crocheting last year, when the lockdown kept him at home. “I have been obsessed ever since,” he said. He’s made jumpers, hats and scarves, and even a cute cosy for his Olympic medal!

Golden boy

Tom’s childhood dream finally came true last month, after four Olympics and 20 years of diving. “I feel incredibly proud to say that I am a gay man and also an Olympic champion,” he said. “To be an Olympic champion after four attempts feels extremely special.” Tom was emotional as he paid tribute to his dad, adding, “He would have been extremely proud.”

Budding star Tom started diving when he was seven, competing within a year. “I thought it was cool to see divers doing somersaults on the board,” he said. He dreamt of winning Olympic gold and was well on the way, becoming world champion of 10m platform diving at 15 and winning Olympic bronze twice.

TV idol

His profile grew as quickly as his medals tally over the years. After the 2012 London Olympics, Tom coached celebs like Diversity’s Perri Kiely and Gemma Collins in reality show Splash, which ran for two series in 2013 and 2014.

Tom came out as gay in December 2013 in a YouTube video, revealing he was dating Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black – 20 years his senior – and had “never been happier”. “Meeting Lance and then coming out changed everything,” he added. As an ex-page three model, I was more than happy to stand in front of a photographer and whip out my boobs, and I didn’t care who saw. But back then, I was young, firm, and fabulous! Would I do this now, at the age of 59? Absolutely not. Unfortunately, so few of us have been blessed with a body like Elle MacPherson or J-Lo – or we can’t afford the nips and tucks to get one – so as I edge towards 60, my clothes are staying firmly on. I’d much prefer to grow old gracefully and keep my body private. The very thought of a guy screenshotting an Instagram selfie and passing around my photo at my age makes me shudder. Or even worse, what if my two grown-up sons or my grandchildren were to see? I’d be mortified,

‘We just need THE TR so we can grieve for Jean’s son Michael is hopeful about the case reopening

J

ean Hanlon was a devoted single mum, who adored her three sons and worked hard to ensure they had everything they needed. But after Michael, Robert and David had all grown up and moved out, Jean decided it was time for a new chapter in her life. Leaving her well-paid secretarial job, 50-year-old Jean relocated from her hometown of Dumfries to the idyllic Greek island of Crete in 2005. She’d previously been there on holiday with a friend and had fallen in love with the culture, its people and the relaxed pace of life. Over three seasons, Jean worked on the island for a travel company before making a decision to settle in Crete permanently in 2008. By that point, Jean had begun working in bars and restaurants and had a great mixture of friends, both British and Greek. “Mum was a very strong-willed woman and a strong character,” Michael said. “She was a great influence and the life and soul of the party.”

16 Bella

Jean Hanlon, 53, was living her dream in Crete when she died in mysterious circumstances. Now, 12 years on, her sons are still looking for answers and won’t stop until they get justice for their mum On a two-week trip to Crete, Michael was happy to see his mum had become a well-loved member of her community in the small village of Kato Gouves. But her family were also concerned that Jean was living alone far away from home. “No matter how many friends you have, you are always vulnerable when you’re on your own,” Michael said. In March 2009, Jean, then 53, went missing. She hadn’t been seen or heard from in over two days, which set off alarm bells for her boys. “Straightaway, I got a feeling that something was wrong,” David said. “It wasn’t like my mum to do that. It was horrible – and I felt too far away to help.” Immediately, the brothers flew out to Crete to join the search party and to try to find out what happened to their mum, who had seemingly vanished into thin air. Clues were later found in her diary. On that morning, Jean wrote about waking up early because of a thunderstorm. She did her washing and then went for a walk. She popped into a local shop and spoke to a friend, where she mentioned that she was being followed by a green car. But she didn’t appear scared or worried. Later that day, Jean called into a local taverna about a job for the upcoming season. She seemed

relaxed and happy as she chatted to the owner, Yiannis Markakis. But then he noticed her leave suddenly before finishing her wine. “She seemed stressed, like someone was waiting for her and that she needed to go,” Yiannis said. After that, Jean’s movements are a mystery. Although it’s never been officially confirmed, phone records suggest that Jean was in the town of Heraklion, 11 miles east of Kato Gouves. But it’s not known how she could have got there because she didn’t drive. At around 8.20pm, Jean phoned a friend and told him that she was calling from the Marina Café in Heraklion. She was with a man who spoke Greek, but not with a native accent. She passed the phone to the man, and he chatted with her friend. Then, at 8.50pm, Jean sent the same friend a chilling text message, which simply said, “HELP.” About 20 minutes later, the friend called back, but despite her text message, nothing

appeared to be wrong with Jean, who was still with the man. Satisfied that she was OK, her friend went to bed. At 9.45pm, Jean called her friend again, but he didn’t answer. That was the last anyone had seen or heard from her. The following morning, Jean was due to babysit for a friend, but when she didn’t show up, concerns were raised to the police, who said they couldn’t investigate until she’d been missing 48 hours. That’s when Michael, Robert and David were alerted, and they flew out to Crete praying she’d turn up saying she had just lost her phone. But on 13 March – four

‘I felt too far away to help’

With sons Michael, Robert and David in their childhood

RUTH our mum’ Jean had fallen in love with Crete on a holiday days after Jean had gone missing – a body was discovered. It had been found washed up in the harbour of Heraklion. When the brothers were taken to identify the deceased woman, they were still hopeful it wasn’t their mum, as the coroner’s reports said that the body was so badly decomposed, it looked to have been dead for 20 days. But when the brothers were shown her clothes, they recognised them as their mother’s. Jean’s body was in a shocking state. “She looked like a shell, it was heartbreaking,” Michael said. The brothers were handed a death certificate to sign, but it was in Greek, which they couldn’t read, and they refused. It said Jean had died from accidental drowning, however the brothers were not convinced. They insisted their mum was afraid of water and would never have gone near the sea in the dark. Ex-chief of police Vosilis Verykokidis told the brothers that 12mg of alcohol was found in her blood, so it was possible that while walking along the harbour, she might have

fallen in due to inebriation. But Michael, Robert and David remained convinced their mum’s death was no accident and headed back to Dumfries to continue their search for the truth. Going through their mum’s diary in greater detail, further clues were found about the weeks leading up to her death. On Sunday 1 March, Jean wrote about a man called Nicos. “Got clothes out to decide what to wear out to Heraklion. The doorbell rang – it was Nicos. How forward is he? Made him a coffee, but also started getting ready to go out. I can’t believe it. He asked me for money.” On Wednesday 4 March, Jean wrote, “Nicos invited me out for Sunday dinner. I told him I didn’t think it was a good idea.” Then, on Saturday 7 March, Jean wrote, “Nicos called wanting to come round tonight, but I said no.” In December 2009 – nine months after Jean’s death – a

second post-mortem report was released by the coroner. In it, he said Jean had also suffered a broken neck, a shattered coccyx and other bruises. The case was reopened, and two suspects were brought in for questioning – one even created a false alibi. But the brothers’ hopes for answers were dashed when the suspects were released without charge. Once again, Greek authorities closed the case, concluding Jean’s death was no more than a tragic accident. Still, Jean’s sons refused to give up, making sure their mum’s story remained in the media spotlight. Six years after Jean’s death, the case was reopened only to be closed again within a month. In 2019, following a TV documentary about Jean’s case,

‘It’s not going away’

Greek authorities reopened the case again, but it failed to secure a breakthrough. Although the brothers were devastated by another setback, they were determined to keep fighting for answers, and in March this year – 12 years after their mother’s death – the case was reopened after new evidence emerged. “I think this is going to be a really good breakthrough, and it could possibly be groundbreaking for Mum’s case,” Michael told BBC Scotland. Michael has vowed that he and his brothers will never give up until they’ve found justice for their mum. He said, “It’s not going away – we just want to find out what happened, so we can grieve for our mum.” ● Murder In Paradise airs on 9 August, 9pm, on Crime+Investigation and is available on catch up

‘I want my daug to grow up full of confidence’ Emily White, 23, changed her unhealthy lifestyle for good

G

rowing up, I was always active, playing football and running. At a size 14, I was conscious that I was bigger than other girls in my class, but I was fit, so I didn’t really mind. But as I stopped doing as much sport, I started putting on weight and became self-conscious. I would make jokes about my size before others got the chance. I was really hard on myself. I had a sweet tooth and could rarely stop at a couple of biscuits – instead, I would eat the whole packet. I also

loved crisps and chocolate. A few months before our school prom, I decided to make an effort to be healthier, so I could wear a nice dress and feel better about myself. I started running every evening after school and ate lowfat yoghurts and fruit instead of junk food. Within a year, I dropped four dress sizes and reached a size 8. I never weighed myself because I didn’t want the pressure of looking at the scales every week. I preferred noticing small changes in my body every week as I toned up. Before my prom date, we had a six-week study break, which meant I hadn’t seen my friends since I’d lost most

of my weight. I ordered a strapless ocean blue dress online with a diamanté bodice – and as soon as I tried it on, I felt amazing. That evening, instead of hiding from the camera, I embraced it. “I didn’t even recognise you, Emily, you look stunning!” one friend told me. After leaving school, I became a personal trainer apprentice at my local gym. One of the perks was that I could get a free membership, and I took full advantage and would work out six days a week. Within two years, I qualified as a level two trainer, and I went on to get my level three, so I could help others

achieve their weight-loss goals through the power of exercise. I loved every second of it. I started dating a boy I’d met through friends, and by December 2017, I got pregnant with my daughter Millie, now two. I’d always wanted children, and I couldn’t wait to be a mum. My ex and I decided we would be better as friends and decided to co-parent together. I moved out of my family home and into a flat of my own. I gave birth to my gorgeous daughter in September 2018. From the moment Millie was placed into my arms, I was smitten, but life as a young single mum was very intense, and I couldn’t have done it without my family’s support. I started neglecting myself, and instead of cooking healthy food, I’d just eat chocolate and biscuits or two jacket potatoes covered in cheese with a family-sized pasta bake to eat alongside it. Eight months after having Millie, I’d gained 3st and had to buy clothes in a size 14. At 5ft 2in, I was bigger than I used to be and knew I was having

too many treats. In the summer of 2019, I took Millie to the park with my friend, and she offered to take a picture of us both. But I didn’t like what I saw, and I knew then that I needed to take

control of my diet. I didn’t want Millie to grow up with her own body issues due to my lack of selfconfidence. I had to lose weight not just for myself, but for her. I went home, and for the first time in years, I decided to step on the scales. I was 12st 6lbs and ready for the challenge ahead. I downloaded the app MyFitnessPal to help me achieve results through a calorie deficit. I made healthy swaps and measured out my portions. For breakfast, I’d have a low-fat yoghurt with a coffee, followed by a homemade vegetable soup for lunch with a pack of crackers. Then for dinner, I’d make homemade cottage pie with lean mince, a sweet potato mash topping and lots of vegetables. If I wanted something sweet after dinner, I’d have a 90-calorie brownie, so I was still keeping to my daily calorie limit. And when the UK went into national lockdown last March, I used my time wisely to make sure Millie and I went for daily walks, to keep my step count up. I tried out healthy new recipes and followed foodie accounts on social media to give me inspiration. Within a year, I reached my goal of 9st 2lbs and was fitting into my size 8-10 clothes I had worn before I was pregnant. Now, I feel amazing, and for the first time in a long time, I have confidence. Instead of being uncomfortable all the time, I feel empowered and know that I’m a good role model for my daughter.

beauty secrets

Nail it

s ip rt ge n fi r u yo t a s d n a h y d a Summer-re Prep The secret to a great manicure is preparation. Start with a hand mask – a modern alternative to soaking your mitts. Patchology Warm Up Masks, £10, are self-warming gloves that will soften your hands and stubborn cuticles. If your cuticles look messy, use a cuticle pusher to gently push them back – we recommend Tweezerman Dual Sided Pushy Cuticle Stick, £16, which has a rubber handle for good grip. Some salons will use cuticle scissors, but we believe using a cuticle pusher regularly will have the desired effect, and it’s much safer! Use a crystal nail file, like OPI Crystal File, £10.60, instead of a classic emery board, as the abrasive friction can sometimes cause your nails to split. Always file your nails in one direction to prevent damage.

Trends This season, celebs have upped their manicure game. In particular, Rochelle Humes and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, along with their manicurist Harriet Westmoreland, have posted on Instagram to showcase their ever-changing nails. The reverse French and sorbet shades are two trends they can’t get enough of.

Sorbet shades Mavala Naïve Mint 982 £5.50

Essie Check Your Baggage 677 £7.99

Application A base coat will stop polish from staining your nails and give your manicure staying power. Nails Inc Back To Life Strengthening Nail Treatment, £15, is a two-in-one formula that hydrates nails, as well as being a base coat. When applying your chosen colour, apply two thin layers, starting at the middle of the nail base and fanning out. Don’t worry about mistakes – rectify with a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover, or using the nifty Nails Inc SOS Corrector Pen, £10. Lastly, seal the deal with a durable top coat, to give your nails extra gloss and protection from chipping. We love Jessica Brilliance High Gloss In A Flash, £11.95.

Maintain Use a cuticle oil nightly. Essie Apricot Nail & Cuticle Oil, £8.99, or Margaret Dabbs Nail & Cuticle Serum, £12, are both excellent at keeping your cuticles soft and manageable, as well as promoting healthy nail regrowth. Indulge in a weekly scrub with the OPI Pro Spa Skincare Hands & Feet Exfoliating Sugar Scrub, £17.20. It will rejuvenate the skin on your hands, ridding them of dead skin cells and boosting circulation, which promotes skin cell turnover, preventing wrinkles and crepey skin.

Alcohol is calorific, so take it easy with the booze if you want to lose weight this summer. Too much can also make you bloated, gain fat on your tummy and cause food cravings. To strengthen your core, slim your waist and improve posture, she recommends a weighted Russian twist. Sit with your legs in front of you and heels on the floor, holding a weight with both hands. Edited by: Hayley Merrick. Recipes: Candice Brown. Photos: Ellis Parrinder

1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped into small pieces Handful of mangetout Thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced into matchsticks 1 garlic clove, crushed Zest and juice of 1 lemon Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 cod fillets or loin, skin on Olive oil 2 vines of cherry tomatoes, with about 6-8 tomatoes on each Small handful of fresh dill, chopped 100g cooked couscous, to serve 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C Fan/Gas 4. Put the pepper, mangetout, ginger, garlic, lemon zest and juice and some salt and pepper in a bowl. Give it a really good mix, then add the cod and gently rub the marinade into the fish. 2 Place a large piece of foil on a baking tray and drizzle over some oil. Place the cod on top and tip over the lemony vegetables. Top each piece of cod with one of the tomato vines. Drizzle over a little more oil. Fold up the edges of the foil to make a large, sealed parcel. 3 Bake for 15 mins – if the cod is thick it may need slightly longer. The fish should flake away easily when cooked. 4 Remove from the oven and undo the parcel. Lift out the cod and vegetables, place on top of some cooked couscous and sprinkle over freshly chopped dill.

Goat’s cheese, smoked salmon & asparagus filo tart Serves 4-6 Ready in 1 hr

50g unsalted butter, melted 6-8 sheets of ready-made filo pastry 250g fine asparagus 5 eggs 100ml double cream 100ml whole milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Small bunch of fresh, flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 200g baby spinach 5 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped 200g smoked salmon 250g soft goat’s cheese, sliced 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C Fan/Gas 4. Brush a 25cm flan or quiche tin with melted butter and then lay in the first layer of filo pastry. Brush this with melted butter and lay in the second layer, then brush with more melted butter. Repeat with the filo and butter until there are no gaps in the pastry, the tin is covered, and you have lots of jagged edges sticking up. Arrange the sheets at different angles.

2 Brush the last layer of pastry with butter and bake for 8-10 mins until the filo starts to turn golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and set aside. 3 Bend the asparagus spears until they snap near the end – this bit is too woody to eat – then blanch for 2 mins in boiling water. Mix the eggs, cream and milk in a jug. Season. Stir the parsley through. 4 Layer the spinach, asparagus and spring onions in the pastry case and tear the smoked salmon over the top. Pour over the egg mixture and top with goat’s cheese. Transfer the filled filo pastry case to the oven. (It may be easier to put the tin on a flat baking tray and pour the egg mixture into the pastry while in the oven, being careful not to burn yourself.) 5 Bake for 25-30 mins until the egg is just set and it still has a slight wobble. The filo should be a golden brown colour – if it starts to catch, cover it with foil. Serve ve it up warm on its own or with a big heap of salad.

Tip

You can also make individual tarts in muffin tins, just reduce the cooking time to 15-20 mins.

Scatter the desiccated

coconut over a baking tray and toast in the oven for 3-5 mins until starting to turn golden brown. Set aside. 2 Put the sugar, butter, flour, baking powder, eggs, orange zest and coconut milk in a large bowl and, using an electric mixer or hand mixer, mix together until pale, fluffy and completely combined. Pour into the prepared tin and level out. 3 Bake for 20-25 mins until risen and golden brown or a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Turn out on to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4 Spread the jam over the cooled sponge – get right to the edges. Evenly sprinkle over the toasted These recipes are taken desiccated coconut. Cut from Happy Cooking into squares and serve by Candice Brown hot with custard. (Edbury Press, £22)

The eating disorder

EPIDEMIC Cases have gone up alarmingly, but the signs aren’t always clear to see

A

record number of people have been admitted to hospital with eating disorders in recent months, with experts blaming the stress and anxiety caused by COVID-19. Calls to a helpline run by Beat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity, have surged by 195 per cent since the pandemic began, with the demand for help rising even as restrictions have been eased. This isn’t only about teenagers drastically cutting calories – as serious as that can be. People of any age can have an eating disorder, and most sufferers are not underweight. In fact, they may look perfectly well. So, could you or a loved one be affected?

What is an eating disorder? Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that in some

36 Bella

way involve an unhealthy relationship with food. The eating problem is a symptom, not a diet that’s gone wrong. Beat’s director of external affairs Tom Quinn explains, “Eating disorders have complex causes, but they can be a way of coping with feelings or situations that are making the person unhappy, angry, depressed, stressed or anxious. The most important thing to remember is that they aren’t the fault of the person who’s unwell, and no one chooses to have an eating disorder.” Common types of eating disorder include: ● Bulimia (or bulimia nervosa). This is when people are caught in a cycle of bingeing and purging. They consume large quantities of food over a short period, when they feel they have no control over how much and how fast they’re eating. They then try to compensate, perhaps by vomiting

or using laxatives, exercising excessively or fasting. They’re typically anxious about their weight and shape, and may think they look much bigger than they really are. ● Anorexia (or anorexia nervosa). This involves restricting food intake – even to the point of starvation – and/or exercising excessively. People with anorexia have an intense fear of gaining weight and often have a distorted body image. ● Binge eating disorder. This involves binge eating without purging, although people sometimes fast between binges. Bingeing is often done alone, in secret, and can be followed by feelings of disgust and shame. It’s thought to be the most common eating disorder. ● Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This is about avoiding certain foods or food types, or limiting food intake.

It has nothing to do with weight or appearance – the focus is all on the food. People might avoid a certain food because they don’t like its taste or texture, or it might have caused them problems in the past – perhaps making them sick or giving them stomach

want to worry people or waste their time, or because they feel guilty, embarrassed or ashamed,” says Tom. “No matter what your circumstances are, you deserve to have your concerns acknowledged respectfully, to be taken seriously and to be supported in the same way as if you were affected by any other illness.” The first step is to see your GP – taking someone with you for support, if you think that will help. According to official guidelines, if the GP suspects that you have an eating disorder, they should refer you “immediately” to a specialist eating disorder service. And they shouldn’t rely on your BMI (weight in relation to your height) to decide if you need treatment. The treatment itself will depend on the type of eating disorder involved, but it should look at both the mind and the body. That means some form of psychotherapy, alongside dietary advice and medical treatment if needed. You would only be admitted to hospital if you were very unwell or doctors thought you were at risk of self-harm.

They involve an unhealthy relationship with food

Impact

pains. Or they might have no interest in eating. Any of these symptoms could have a physical cause, but in this case, it’s a mental health issue. Many people with an eating disorder don’t quite fall into any of these symptom sets.

In the year to December 2020, there were 20,176 women and girls admitted to hospital with eating disorders in England, compared with 9,407 in 2016. For men and boys, the figures are up from 911 to 1,825. And these are only the people in crisis – the very tip of the iceberg. The Royal College of Psychiatrists thinks the true number of people needing help is far higher, warning of “a hidden epidemic of eating disorders”. The impact on individuals can be devastating. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, through medical complications or suicide. And any eating disorder can cause serious emotional distress, as well as physical harm. Severely restricting food intake affects every organ in the body. The bingeing and purging of bulimia can damage teeth and the oesophagus, and affect the heart and digestive system. Binge eating may lead to obesity, and with it problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. According to Beat, people rarely make a full recovery without treatment and support, and getting help early makes a full recovery more likely. Eating disorders can be overcome, but asking for help isn’t always easy. “Sometimes people worry about talking to someone because they don’t feel their eating disorder is serious enough, they don’t

Helping a loved one One common feature of these disorders is that people often don’t recognise they have a problem, and if they do, they may not want to admit it to anyone else. Fear and shame can lead them to be secretive, to lie and to be angry and defensive about their behaviour. Even when people do accept treatment, recovery may take a long time and there can be set-backs along the way. All this makes life a lot harder for those who love them and want to help. Tom says, “It can feel overwhelming to have a loved one become unwell, and it’s important to remember that neither they nor you are to blame. Try to choose a quiet time to speak to them about how they may be feeling, and avoid any time just before or after meals. You may like to encourage them to share their feelings if they feel comfortable – try not to assume what they may be going through. If they accept they need help, you could offer to go with them to the GP. “Supporting someone through their eating disorder may not always be easy, so try to make time for yourself. Looking after yourself will put you in the best position to support them.”

Fear and shame can lead people to be secretive

FIRST SIGNS

Beat has devised this quick checklist for anyone worried that someone they know may have an eating disorder. It shows some common first signs: ● LIPS: Are they obsessive about food? ● FLIPS: Is their behaviour changing? ● HIPS: Do they have distorted beliefs about their body size? ● KIPS: Are they often tired and struggling to concentrate? ● NIPS: Do they disappear to the toilet after meals?

● SKIPS: Have they started exercising excessively? If you spot any signs of an eating disorder, even if they’re not on this list, you should seek help and advice as soon as possible. ● For more information and support, visit Beateatingdisorders. org.uk or call the Beat helpline on 0808 801 0677.

They might be diagnosed as having a catch-all other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED). For example, they may purge themselves, but not binge, or eat normally during the day, but uncontrollably at night, or have the symptoms of anorexia, but stay within a normal weight range. There are also some more unusual eating disorders, such as pica – a compulsion to eat non-foodstuffs like dirt, soap or flecks of paint.

‘My husband move in lockdown – but happier than ever’ Helen Thorn, 42, was heartbroken when her 22-year relationship imploded. But now she adores her single life

ying in bed, I snuggled up to my husband and said, “I never want to get divorced.” We’d been together for 22 years and a lot of our friends had recently separated, which scared me. But while our own marriage wasn’t perfect, I thought 2020 was going to be our best year yet. We’d met in college when we

were 19 and fell madly in love. So, while my friends travelled the world and had flings, I spent my twenties visiting IKEA and setting up home. In March 2008, we had our daughter, who’s now 12, and in 2010, we got married. I wore a Vivienne Westwood cocktail dress, and we had a wonderful day with 120 friends and family. A year later, we had a son, too, and happily settled into life in London. That’s not to say our marriage was faultless. I was messy, while he ate too loudly and left nail clippings in the bathroom. But these grumbles inspired many of the jokes my comedy partner Ellie Gibson and I would do in our live show. Together we form comedy duo the Scummy Mummies, hosting a parenting podcast and touring the UK. When 2020 dawned, I felt optimistic. I had a husband I adored, and we celebrated our ten-year wedding anniversary. My career was going well, we were about to renovate our house, and after years of feeling slightly shattered, motherhood was getting easier. But one afternoon in March, my daughter and I were sorting her outfit for World Book Day when

I decided we’d use my husband’s blazer. When I picked it up, I realised there was a letter in the pocket – and it wasn’t from me. Reading it left me feeling sick, like I’d been punched, but I went into autopilot and cooked the kids’ tea feeling completely numb. When my husband came home from work, I told him what I’d found. I’d wanted our marriage to last forever, but I knew it was over. The conversation wasn’t explosive, it was quiet, and I felt a deep shock and pain, like my heart was literally breaking. I’d put years into being a wife and mum, creating our home together, and it felt like it was all for nothing. For a few days, we skirted around each other, but then cases of COVID-19 began spiralling and there was talk of a national lockdown. Knowing I needed space, I asked him to leave, and he rented a flat nearby. On the first day of lockdown, I watched him pack his bags into the car, then gave him a goodbye hug. It would be my last physical contact with an adult for three months. Lockdown was hard. After 22 years together, all my lovely family memories had been shattered. I’d wake up sobbing, and I felt furious that he’d robbed me of the life I’d tirelessly worked to create. Friends gave me air hugs

across the park and dropped off lasagne, but being stuck at home was horrible – I had limited work and no social life to distract me. I sobbed on the phone to friends, and the kids took it in turns to snuggle down next to me in bed. Instead of stressing about homeschooling, I made their days as happy as possible, taking them for walks around the woods, letting them eat fish fingers and ice cream, and giving them lots of cuddles. Despite the sadness hanging over me, we regrouped as a family of three. I had weekly virtual therapy sessions, too. The split made other sadness bubble to the surface, like my body confidence issues, and it was time to slowly rebuild my self-worth. But as tough as it was, having three months at home was a blessing of sorts. Instead of running away from my rage and sadness, I had to confront it head on. I had to accept I was going to be angry and miserable, and I had to learn to let that anger out. It was like heartbreak boot camp, and it sped up the grieving process. Every Friday night, the kids stayed with their dad, and Ellie and I teamed up remotely to drink margaritas and perform live shows for our 159k Instagram followers. Making them laugh during a

ed out I’m ’ difficult time gave us a boost, and we’d finish each show feeling euphoric. Finally, three months after my ex moved out, something amazing happened. I woke up one morning and didn’t feel sad. Gradually, I was beginning to realise that being single gave me a blank canvas for life, and that I could fill it with everything I loved. That summer, he took the kids away for two weeks, and I lived like a 21 year old. With lockdown restrictions eased, I enjoyed dinners out, drinks with friends and even joined Tinder. I met my first date at a London wine bar, where we shared a cheese platter and drank wine. Then we kissed and went back to his place. I’d only slept with a handful of men before meeting my ex, but I couldn’t wait to get my knickers off! I was a curvy size 18, with stretch marks, and I could have listed 100 things I hated about my body, but I made a conscious decision not to care and had a great time. After that, I enjoyed dating when the kids were with their dad. I dated 50 year olds, 45 year olds and even a 29 year old. I didn’t care what their job was, what their long-term prospects were, or whether they’d make a good dad, I just wanted to have fun. Of course, I had experiences where guys didn’t text back, and yes, it stung a little, but I learnt to let it

She has two children with her ex go. I had my kids and amazing friends, and I didn’t want a boyfriend. After years of thinking that a relationship meant everything, I felt a weird sense of calm. At long last I wasn’t craving validation from anyone else. Last November, when the UK went into the second lockdown, I decided to write a book about my experiences. After a day of homeschool, I’d type away at the kitchen table until 3am. Often I’d sit there sobbing as I relived the heartache, but it was also incredibly cathartic, and exactly one year after my ex moved out, I finished Get Divorced, Be Happy. I want other women to know that if their relationship ends, they can find happiness again. Sixteen months ago, I felt like I’d been shattered into pieces, but so many positives have come out of something horrific. Yes, I was really sad, but the end of my marriage was an amazing gift. I’ve rebuilt myself as stronger and more resilient. My divorce will be finalised soon, and I feel giddy about all the things that lie ahead. ● Get Divorced, Be Happy by Helen Thorn (Vermilion) is out now

I’m 47 and have been suffering with HPV (genital warts) for the past eight years. I’ve tried surgery, cream and cryotherapy and they still come back. I’ve been back to my doctor and the sexual health clinic and they just remove them, only for them to return in a few months. I’m at my wits’ end. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to have another relationship, because how can I tell a new partner what’s wrong with me? They’d run a mile. My mates just think I hate men, but I can’t get over the shame. Please help.

44 Bella

My boyfriend died in March, having suffered a massive stroke. I couldn’t see him in hospital, and couldn’t go to the funeral because of lockdown. We met when I was 17 when I’d moved to his city. We dated for a year, until I needed to go home to look after Mum as she was on her own. We kept in touch at first, but time went on, and I met someone who I married and had two sons. But I never stopped thinking about him. Years went by and my marriage wasn’t happy. My husband became ill and eventually died having had dementia for many years. On a whim, I put an ad in my ex’s local paper, and he replied. We met and it felt like it used to. He’d also had an unhappy marriage. But we lived

hundreds of miles apart and lockdown happened so we weren’t allowed to travel. He sent me so many gifts, flowers and chocolates, and that’s all I have to remember him. I feel angry that we found each other after all these years, and then he was taken. I can’t stop crying. I’m heartbroken. It just feels so cruel.

A

Research suggests that 80 per cent of sexually active adults will at some point carry the HPV virus, although not everyone gets the same symptoms or knows they have it. Therefore, it’s likely that any new partner is either infected or a carrier. So everyone who’s sexually active should behave as if they have HPV, and use barrier contraception to minimise transmission. But you seem to believe the infection makes you undesirable. And this leaves me wondering whether the virus is a symbol of how you feel about yourself. That you are unlovable. Is this a familiar feeling – to believe that everyone else has a chance at finding love, but you don’t? Is the virus a way for you to disqualify yourself before the race starts? How come other people who live with it don’t feel the same way?

A

I am so sorry for your loss, and understand that it does seem particularly cruel that you had just found each other when the world shut down, and the course of your true love was so unfairly disrupted. March is only a few months ago, so I’m not surprised you are still reeling from the shock. What makes your grief more complicated is that there

never met in person. We’re due to start going back into the office, and I can’t wait to meet him in person. I’m picturing after work drinks at the pub, and who knows what might happen! Should I go for it?

I have a crush on my boss

Q

I came out of a long-term relationship during lockdown, moved out of the flat we shared, and started a new job. It was quite a difficult time! Now I’m out the other side, I have a different dilemma. I have a massive crush on my boss. I’ve only seen him through the lens of my computer as we’ve

A

You don’t mention how your boss might feel towards you. Have you had signals that the feelings are mutual? Is he in a relationship? It might be hard to pick up on flirty behaviour in a Zoom meeting where all you’re seeing is each other’s top halves! I would also advise caution when it comes to work relationships, especially with someone who has authority over you, because the balance is off when one of you has more power. Also, think about how this might impact your position if you started something and it went

was geographical distance between you when he fell ill. It makes it easier for you to be tricked into believing that he is still at home all those miles away, because you weren’t in each other’s lives every day. Additionally, you weren’t able to witness his decline, to see him in hospital, see for yourself his body deteriorating, and his life slipping away. You also missed out on another important step of your grief – the funeral. However painful the experience may be, the rituals associated with a funeral force us to face the reality of our loved one’s death. Talking to friends and family about the memories, funny stories and incidents that marked who they were as a person and sharing one’s grief with all the others who loved the person you’ve all lost. You say in your letter that you are going to visit the crematorium now that you can travel. This will help you to come to terms with your loss. I’m not saying that you will ever get over it, but if you allow it to, life will grow around your pain.

TV interview Nicola Walker’s having a ball as her Radio 4 series Annika gets remade for TV

i r d o t d ie f i l a u q ‘I’m ’ ! w o n t a o b d e e p s a N

icola Walker is playing detective in a much wetter setting than usual in her new TV drama Annika. Based on the Radio 4 play Annika Stranded that she has starred in for years, this six-part series follows DI Annika Strandhed (Walker) as her specialist Marine Homicide Unit is tasked with investigating a number of mysterious deaths and unexplained murders off the coast of Scotland. Throughout the series, Annika shares her wry observations on the case and her life directly to the camera with the audience. We see her trying to balance managing her team – played by Jamie Sives, Katie Leung and Ukweli Roach –with her increasingly troubled teenage daughter

50 Bella

Morgan (Silvie Furneaux). We caught up with 51-year-old Nicola to find out more about what it has been like bringing Annika to screen.

How has Annika changed for TV? We’ve been doing it for a number of years on Radio 4, and we have a very loyal fan base. And then, during first lockdown, the production company decided to do this amazing thing – they would try to transplant Annika from Norway to Scotland. So, there are significant changes for people who know her from radio. She has a slightly different team. She has a daughter now – she had a son on the radio – but it is still absolutely, essentially Annika the character from the show transposed to Scotland.

In the TV version, she talks directly to the viewer, which helps us get to know her quirks… She would probably really dislike being called quirky! I think she’s idiosyncratic. On the radio, you’ve got that intimacy with the listener, and we worked very hard on figuring out how to get that intimacy on this new TV series. They came up with the idea of breaking the fourth wall, which I think works really well, so you still have that right down the lens. I think she’s really fun. The main thing about her is that she’s an outsider, because she still has these Norwegian roots, and her Norwegian parents have given her this very typical Norwegian trait in that she’s very direct. That is the key to Annika – she is direct with her team, she’s

direct with her daughter, and she’s very direct with you, straight down the camera.

It must have been unusual for you to speak straight to the camera – did it add to the drama? I’m filming at the moment, and I keep getting told off for looking down the barrel! It’s completely ruined me, and I was worried about that at the time. The first day we did it was so weird because if you look down the barrel normally on a drama, you get told off because you’re not meant to – so suddenly you have to do the complete opposite. It was difficult on the first day, and then after that, I really, really loved it and I become slightly obsessed with it. Now, when I’m filming on something else, I’m driving

brilliantly written. I’ve seen a lot of mother-daughter relationships done in a way that’s all about friction, combat and arguing, and actually there is so much love there. Now, she is hitting 15, 16, and is having trouble for various reasons. I like that there’s absolute love there. They work things out.

Have you got a hankering to go to Norway now?

them mad. I know the director doesn’t find it funny. I just keep turning into Annika and he doesn’t think I’m remotely amusing because I keep flicking him looks down the barrel – he just thinks I’m insane. I really enjoyed it because I imagined talking to someone sitting at home on their sofa, as if they were my silent partner in crime, and I reveal stuff to them.

Tell us a bit about Annika and her relationship with this team, and her very different managerial skills… I don’t think she has them. She’s skipped all the courses – she lies to her new boss that she went on the managerial course before she took the new job. She doesn’t believe in any of that, she has her own process and a reputation for getting results with this rather idiosyncratic way of investigating. She’s a watcher, Annika, so she’s sussing them out very quickly. What I find really interesting is that she has no trouble in showing that she adores her team.

Morgan, her daughter, is such a big part of the series and looks at teenage mental health, which is such an important subject... Completely, and that motherdaughter relationship is so

l Annika, Tuesday 17 August, Alibi

I look like I can barely move. I’m wearing so many clothes to try to combat the extreme weather conditions.

And you actually have a speedboat driving licence now! I think I should be more proud of me! I just always sit here and say, “Yes, I learned how to do this.” I mean, we really did. We’ve got these speedboat licences, so we can drive quite safely now. We have to do man overboard procedure and navigating lights and buoys and things. But, of course, for television, when it’s all edited together, you never feel like it shows that you really did it. Also in your head, you think you’re going to look amazing, but I didn’t factor in how freezing it was going to be in Scotland in January. Normally, when it’s cold, you’re filming and your vanity as an actor says, “No, I won’t take the extra layers because I want my costume to look nice.” Scotland made me go, “I want every single item of thermal and to be wearing 72 layers.” So, I don’t look as glamorous as I imagined because

Oh, completely. I have been in Annika’s head for a number of years. The writer, Nick Walker, has done so many trips to Norway, but I’ve never been. There are lots of things I would like to go and see that he’s written about. I have a very good Norwegian friend, and there’s an episode where Annika was talking to her father. Obviously, that had to be in Norwegian, and my Norwegian friend helped me with that. It basically involved chatting on Zoom and her laughing at me and saying how terrible I was! But she pushed me through and I got there. I would love to go as the whole Norwegian thing for Annika is incredibly important – that’s how she identifies herself. She likes to present herself as someone who is culturally from somewhere else, even though she grew up in Scotland.

WHY WE LOVE THE 70S 80S 90S THE MUSIC, THE TV, THE FILMS, THE FASHIONS.... THERE’S PLENTY OF REASONS WHY WE PLAY THE DECADES ON GREATEST HITS RADIO. WHO CAN FORGET THESE HIGHLIGHTS? GLAM ROCK, DISCO FEVER AND LAVA LAMPS – SO BEGINS THE 70S. WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?

BIG HAIR, POWER BALLADS AND BLUE EYE SHADOW, THE 80S HAD IT ALL

David Cassidy posters adorned bedroom walls while Slade gave us big hair and glam rock. We jived to the Bee Gees and listened to ABBA’s Dancing Queen on our new cassette recorders. And who can forget lava lamps?

Eighties fashion was all about the perm, legwarmers, DayGlo accessories, frosted lipstick and blue eye shadow. Ford Cortinas were the car of choice and windscreen stickers saying Gary 4 Debbie.

PATSY AND EDDIE, CRIMPED HAIR AND SUPERMODELS, WELCOME TO THE 90S

A superior decade for sitcoms: think Friends (and the ‘Rachel’ haircut) Frasier, Absolutely Fabulous and The Vicar of Dibley, while GHR’s own Pat Sharp immortalised the mullet on Fun House.

Cindy and co strutted as supermodels, the Spice Girls arrived with Wannabe, Bryan Adam stayed at No 1 with Everything I Do. We danced to Whigfield’s Saturday Night after a few Bacardi Breezers.

On the big screen Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Jaws and Star Wars were box office hits, while phone boxes and men in specs took on a whole new allure after Superman.

We watched Birds of A Feather and Top Gun while Foreigner wanted to know what love was and Whitney wanted to dance with somebody. We welcomed Wham!, and Freddie Mercury stole the show at Live Aid.
