FILL ’ER UP! Dear Goodguys, In the July 2021 issue Parting Shot is shown an old-time gas station and your suggestion for people to go out and find them. I am attaching my old Shell station that I restored in my hometown of Knoxville, Illinois. It sits on Main Street and I use it as my workshop and it also houses relics of past days and my cars and project cars I’m working on. My 1970 428 CJ Mustang in front of the pumps was a 2019 Goodguys Muscle Car of
the Year finalist. People are welcome to come visit and pull in for photo ops. It was a big hit when the Power Tour came through a few years back. Gary Goudie Knoxville, IL
Gary – That’s very cool! What a fun workshop for you and a great photo backdrop for others traveling through. Readers, make sure to put Knoxville on your list when you’re out road tripping in your rods and customs! – Editor
CRUNCH TIME Dear Goodguys, Ya Gotta Drive ’Em…but sometimes bad stuff happens. After attending the Nashville Nationals and winning an award for Period Perfect, I was really happy as I drove my ’41 Plymouth home. Unfortunately, it was Memorial

Day weekend and the road was full of wannabe stunt drivers. As I was traveling through the North Carolina mountains, an
event-driven publication, not having many events to base your coverage on would have meant some panic at first. But you adapted with reader rides, Get in the Garage, etc., and the Gazette issues have been great as usual. The Gazette is the BEST old car magazine of any of them, hands down. Doane Yawger Via email
aggressive driver tried to shoot the gap between me and a tanker truck. He misjudged the speed differential and the gap closed quickly. I didn’t see him until he shot by me on the right and sideswiped my car. Fortunately, we both avoided the concrete barrier in the middle of I-40. In the really heavy traffic, it would have caused a disaster. The culprit did not pull over to check on me or give me insurance info. In fact, he sped up and ran away! Fortunately, I was able to drive home and am now in the process of fixing the damage. Finding parts for these cars is not easy. My ’41 will be back on the road soon, hopefully. Ya Gotta Drive ‘Em! Rock Able Oak Ridge, NC
Rock – Ouch! We hate to see that, but we’re happy to hear you’re OK – and that you plan to fix the Plymouth. Hopefully the damage was confined to the fender and running board. Such a cool car and we hope to see it back in shape again at a future Goodguys event! – Editor

CREATIVE PASSION Dear Goodguys, I used to subscribe to Car and Driver magazine. It became too stuffed with ads for so many things that I didn’t need or want (or could afford). Then I found a copy of a Goodguys mag at my Dallas V.A. hospital. I saw all of the ideas, passion, and skill that folks like me are bringing into our rides. At 69 years, I can’t do all of those things anymore, but there is still a lot I can do. My ride is an ’04 4WD Blazer. If I live long enough for it to age out of emissions tests, it’s getting an L33 aluminum 5.3. Fingers crossed. James Kerley Via email
James – We’re glad you discovered the Gazette and are enjoying it. Hot rodding is all about passion and creativity, no matter the age of your vehicle. We wish you well with your Blazer project and hope to see it during All American Sunday at one of our next Goodguys events in Fort Worth! – Editor

RETRO RUMBLINGS BY JOHN DRUMMOND
1,200 MILES When he was a kid, Vinny Skandunas’ grandfather would regale him with stories of when the family migrated from Milwaukee to California in the 1920s in their brand-new Model T Ford. Vinny was mesmerized when grandpa would tell him about rattling along plank roads and having to back up hills in the Model T to prevent fuel starvation. Vinny not only became fascinated with Model T Fords, he developed a fondness for the Great Depression era. He started collecting memorabilia, clothing, and everything he could get his hands on from the ’20s and ’30s. Definitely not typical for a millennial, but nothing about Vinny is typical. He’s a talented sheet metal fabricator welding up marine fuel tanks for a living in San
Diego in addition to his nostalgic pursuits. In 2016, Vinny put his passion for Model T Fords in motion with the purchase of a 1924 T truck which served time as a vegetable hauler nearly a century ago. He tinkered with it, freshened what he could, learned all about the Epicyclic transmission, and got familiar with it by taking the creaky old

wooden-wheeled machine on short jaunts around the neighborhood. The only modification to the vehicle was the addition of a 12-volt alternator. Other than that…bone stock! Just a week after getting it fully functional he got a bee in his bonnet. His vision was to travel from Oregon to San Diego in the truck, some 1,200 miles. With a little 177c.i., 20 horsepower four-banger and a top speed in the neighborhood of 30mph, any kind of freeway travel was out of the question. He plotted the course, choosing Hwy 395 as the main thoroughfare due to its open space, wide shoulders and, of course, incredible scenery. He roped his friend Jeff into going with him on this intimidating yet epic adventure. Pretty darn cool. What’s even cooler is Vinny and Jeff decided to do the whole trip in ’20s-era clothing. Vinny chose a World War Iera wool suit. Vinny ’s dad trailered the Model T up to the Oregon border and dropped them off. Then it was into the abyss. “The first day of the journey we made it about 80 miles as we got a late start,” Vinny recalled. “Being the middle of spring, it was pretty cold in southern Oregon. In fact, it ended up snowing on us. We froze our ass off. We pulled into a campground just before dark. The reaction of the families was one of wonder. ‘What is this thing?’ they asked with slack jaws. When they understood
what we were doing we became quite interesting to them. They invited us to their campsites, made us meals, and even churned up some homemade ice cream. That pretty much happened at every campground we stopped at throughout the trip. The bonds and relationships we made were actually what stood out the most. The car, our clothes, Jeff’s dog – it created a great platform for human interaction.” In addition to more campground family bonding and countless thumbs up as they poked along (they averaged just short of 35mph), they were stopped three times by authori-
ties. The sheriffs weren’t looking for violations, as Model Ts are 100-percent street legal. Instead, they simply wanted photos. Continuing the journey, the duo averaged 150 miles a day. They took 395 the entire way south through Northern California, snaking through Nevada, back into California all the way down to Kramer Junction. At the junction they went east over to Barstow, down through Borrego Springs, Ranchita, and eventually on in to San Diego. Up hills, down hills and along flatlands sometimes baking over 100 degrees the further south they got. “One of the coolest moments of the trip was one warm evening we went through a canyon,” Vinny said. “It was so quiet – nobody around. Hearing the engine puff and echo off the canyon walls was surreal.” The 1,200-mile journey took six days total. “The feeling of actually making it to the end was one of victory” Vinny said with a smile. “I had never done anything close to it in my life. “We broke down twice but were up and running pretty quick both times. The biggest failure was when I smoked the brakes coming down a steep grade near Lone Pine, also losing first gear. I was pulling on the brake lever so hard the engine damn near came out of the frame. I took the transmission apart and took
the reverse gear band and put it on the first gear loop. So, then I didn’t have reverse or any brakes. I drove it like that 150 miles to Barstow. “My dad came out to the desert with some extra gear bands, we swapped them in and continued. Later on, we stopped at an old abandoned building along the side of the road for the evening. A lady drove by and asked what we were doing. We explained the situation. She drove off. About an hour later she came
When asked about club affiliations Vinny was candid. “I’m 41 years old. I don’t fit in with the Model T Ford Club. I just do my own thing. I can tell you that Instagram has a been a great way to connect with other Model T enthusiasts that are more my age. There aren’t many but they are out there.” Amazingly, Vinny never had hot rods or fast cars prior to purchasing his first Model T truck. His fascination with the Model T has fulfilled his old car bug just fine. He’s never had a need for speed, just stories and visions of what life was like in a different time. Bringing that era to life is about as retro as it gets. You can look up @1924modeltford on Instagram to follow Vinny’s journeys. Story ending symbol
back with her entire family and brought food. We all sat down and had a picnic. The people we met were like that. Everyone was so giving.” The Oregon to San Diego adventure only deepened Vinny’s obsession with Model Ts and old-fashioned travel. He now has five Model T trucks that run and are fully functional. It took nine vehicles to get five up and running but he now has a choice of which truck to poke around in. Vinny and his wife Esther take the trucks out and travel as much as they can, visiting old ghost towns and other western U.S. destinations. Maybe a trip across the U.S. will happen one day.

LEGENDS OF HOT RODDING BY GARY MEDLEY • www.strokerbymedley.com
PETE CHAPOURIS – CAR CRAFTING LEGEND, INDUSTRY GIANT California Kid. Pierson coupe. Doane Spencer roadster. Eliminator coupe. HogZZilla H a r l e y. S o - C a l l a k e s t e r. Rides that peg the legend meter and linked by a common thread – the genius of Pete Chapouris. One of hot rodding’s premier talents, Chapouris not only transformed street rod culture, but the performance aftermarket as well. In retrospect, that Chapouris would flourish in the automotive realm almost seems preordained. Born in 1940, he came of age during in LA’s postWWII boom. His parents, Doris and Peter, worked for an engine dyno manufacturer. By his teen years, the serenade of rumbling roadsters proved irresistible. In 1955, at the age of 15, Pete joined his parents at the dyno company, which afforded
Blair ’s Speed Shop, a pivot point of SoCal hot rodding since the 1940s. While at Blair’s, he started construction of his own traditional-style ’34 coupe. Little did he know that coupe would eventually influence Hollywood movies, street rod publishing, and his own future in the industry. Then serendipity struck. Rod & Custom writer Gray Baskerville introduced Chapouris to Jim “Jake” Jacobs, a retro rodding kindred spirit. He too was putting together a coupe with similar old-school styling. When Baskerville and R&C publisher Tom Medley suggested a cover shoot that featured both cars, they agreed on the spot. The result was the famous 1973 Rod & Custom cover that showcased both cars, a barn, a fetching model, and the headline “Are Coupes for Chickens?”
ONE OF HOT RODDING’S PREMIER TALENTS, CHAPOURIS NOT ONLY TRANSFORMED STREET ROD CULTURE, BUT THE PERFORMANCE AFTERMARKET AS WELL.
him the opportunity to build his first hot rod, a ’32 roadster. The effort was aided by learning welding at a night class; a parttime gig building dragster frames with M&S Welding followed. In 1971, Chapouris’ automotive journey picked up speed when he joined the staff at
16 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Not only did the issue fly off the newsstands, it inspired Pete and Jake to launch Pete & Jake’s Hot Rod Parts, dedicated to traditional rodding chassis components. Its immediate success showed the way for countless other street rod aftermarket companies. It is hard to overstate the company’s influence.
Nor can one overstate the impact of Pete’s black-flamed, full-fendered. chopped ’34 Ford coupe. The R&C cover caught the attention of movie producer Howie Horowitz, who had been searching for a car to play opposite Martin Sheen in a made-for-TV film, “The California Kid.” Horowitz Called Chapouris and the car was cast as Sheen’s co-star, rocketing it to prominence across the country and further fueling the blossoming street rod movement. Chapouris sold Pete & Jake’s in 1987 and took a position as VP of marketing at SEMA, where he created the Street Rod Equipment Association. As successful as Chapouris was at SEMA, he was drawn back into car building, forming the Pete Chapouris Group in 1995. The Group’s goal was simple: build and restore world-class hot rods. And few did it better. Projects included restoration of the famed Pierson Brothers’ coupe, the McGee highboy, the D u f f y L i v i n g s t on e Eliminator, and the So-Cal Speed Shop lakester. For Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, he built the born-tobe-wild HogZZilla custom Harley and the Kopperhead ’51 Ford three-window coupe. Proving that his gift of branding matched his talent for design, in 1997 Chapouris pitched industry legend Alex Xydias with the notion of reintroducing the So-Cal Speed Shop brand to a new generation of rodders. (Astute Gazette readers will recall that Xydias opened the original So-Cal
Speed shop in Burbank in 1946.) Again, Chapouris demonstrated his Midas touch. The endeavor was a home run from the get-go, turning a near-forgotten name into a must-have brand for in-the-know rodders. What began as a lone shop in Pomona grew into multiple outlets across the country. Soon, So-Cal Speed Shop apparel was as ubiquitous at hot rod shows as lawn chairs. Industry insiders and journalists alike universally admired Chapouris. who passed away in 2017 at age 76. Former Hot Rod magazine feature editor and car designer Thom Taylor was effusive in his praise: “Pete was one of those rare individuals who looked at hot rodding as a business but made it personal through his projects and enthusiasm,” Taylor said. “He created two businesses that are still going strong today. And while he encouraged moving forward with styles, ideas, and plans, he kept mostly to traditional practices, parts, and principles. Fittingly, automotivehistorian To n y T h a c k e r f i r s t m e t Chapouris in 1978 on California’s Highway 99 en route to a rod run. “Pete was respected because he’d grown up in the business, built his first hot rod in high school, knew his stuff, and went on to build a string of iconic, influential hot rods. Above all he was genuine, and it was that sincerity that he wore like Joseph’s coat of many colors. He was a friend and mentor to me and many, many others” Thacker and Taylor also agreed on one the thing: Pete Chapouris is and will be sadly missed. Story ending symbol

Steering Reservoir Fitting Kits
Dream Book
The limited space in some street machine and hot rod engine compartments might require the use of a remote power steering reservoir. Most Saginaw Type II power steering pumps come from the factory with a pump-mounted plastic reservoir that is difficult to modify or mount remotely. These new special fitting kits from Earl’s Performance Products allow the removal of the plastic reservoir and provide for plumbing to a remote reservoir using 5/8inch rubber hose or -10 AN plumbing. The fitting kits are ideal for use in engine swaps, race cars, street rods, muscle cars, and other vehicles that use the Saginaw Type II power steering pump and have a tight-fitting engine.
“Hot Rod Dreams - Car Shows and Culture” is a new book celebrating the people and stories of an era when cars were much more than transportation, but influencers of art and entertainment. During that time, hot rod and custom car shows fed cultural appetites and fantasies. Authors Larry Erickson and David Boule explore this era with help from Bob Larivee, the ringmaster of the greatest indoor custom car shows. For decades, his events fueled dreams and helped define American automotive passion. “Hot Rod Dreams” celebrates the people and stories of the indoor car show scene and explores how popular culture inspires our concepts of personal identity. The hardcover book features more than 350 photos, many of which have never been published.

Master Cylinder Heat Shield
Drag Slash R/C C10
The GM-style cast-iron master cylinders used in many muscle cars, classics, and street rods can be susceptible to heat when they are in close proximity to headers, thanks to the thermal conductivity and heat-holding properties of cast iron. The Lava Master Cylinder Heat Shield from Heatshield Products can help protect from excess heat and improve braking performance and reliability. The shield uses a specially formulated thermal barrier material made from volcanic-rock-based fibers that is able to withstand 1,200 degrees F of constant heat and is resistant to corrosive fluids. It fits master cylinders with both driver- and passenger-side brakeline connections and an integrated high-temperature hook-and-loop fastening system makes the shield easy to install and remove.
Small-scale no-prep radio-control drag racing is more serious than ever and Traxxas offers a winning advantage with the Drag Slash 1/10-scale C10. The Drag Slash is engineered with thoughtful features and innovative performance to be competitive at any level of skill and experience. It has a Pro Series Magnum 272R gearbox built for hard-hitting torque with an anodized aluminum motor plate, all-metal gears, and a sealed silicone-filled four-gear differential. The proven Velineon power system delivers strong, reliable muscle to lay down quick passes and the exclusive Drag Mode and Trans Brake provide incredible versatility. With ultra-wide Mickey Thompson ET Drag Slicks and classic styling, the Drag Slash is where engineered performance meets scale realism.

UP TO SPEED Remembering Craig Morrison All of us at Goodguys were shocked and saddened to hear about the untimely passing of Craig Morrison in June. Craig was a secondgeneration hot rodder and a driving force behind the growth and success of Art Morrison Enterprises over the past 20 years. Craig was a familiar and friendly face to many in the hot rod aftermarket. He could often be found working the Art Morrison Enterprises booth at trade shows and car events and always had a quick handshake and friendly sm i l e fo r thos e who stopped. He and his father, Art, also teamed up to select the Builder’s Choice Top 10 each year at the Goodguys Pacific Northwest Nationals in Puyallup, Washington. Art Morrison was quick to credit Craig with changing the direction of Art Morrison Enterprises two decades ago. “The game changer was when Craig got out of school,” Art told us earlier
this year. After working for several different companies and shops in the automotive aftermarket, Craig returned to his father’s company and steered the business toward building and marketing complete bolt-on chassis for vintage classics, trucks, and hot rods. “The minute he started, he said, ‘we’ve got to build a bolt-on frame,’” Art recalled. “’No welding.’ That was the game-changer. That just changed the face of the whole business.” Beyond hot rods, Craig loved the outdoors, spending much of his free time with his wife, Clarey and son, Alexander, at their mountain cabin, exploring four-wheel-drive trails, hiking, hunting, fishing, and pursuing other outdoor adventures in his home state of Washington and beyond. In fact, it was some of those outside interests that connected Craig so strongly with other car enthusiasts, like Gazette Associate Editor Steven Bunker. “The automotive industry introduced us, but fishing, camping, barbecuing, whiskey, beer, and other hobbies is what created our friendship,” Bunker said. Photographer John Jackson echoed those thoughts. “Craig and I never really talked much about cars,” Jackson said. “We always talked about cuts of meat, land in the middle of nowhere, inappropriate memes, and whiskey.” Jackson coordinated toasts with industry friends at the Heartland Nationals and Summit Racing Nationals to honor Morrison. Craig Morrison is survived by his wife, Clarey; son, Alexander; and parents, Art and Jeanette. The Goodguys team sends its heartfelt condolences to the Morrison family.
Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year and PPG Street Machine of the Year Crowned in Columbus
There was a return to tradition in July as the 23rd Summit Racing Nationals Presented by PPG brought out the freshest and best street rods and street machines to vie for two of the most coveted awards in rodding – Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year and PPG Street Machine of the Year. These competitions always bring out the

country’s top rods and machines and offer a snapshot of the latest trends and build styles. The Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year contest attracted more than 15 contenders and generated a tremendous Top Five. When the envelope was unsealed during a special Saturday evening awards ceremony, Wes and Vivian Rydell’s gorgeous ’41 Chevy, built by Rad Rides by Troy, was crowned the winner. The coach-built rod began life as a four-door Fleetline sedan and imagines what it would have looked like as a formal two door. It’s powered by a Lingenfelter-built LT1 and incorporates a host of modern amenities. The running for PPG Street Machine of the Year was equally compelling, with a wide range of styles exhibited among more than a dozen contenders. The Top Five included three GM F-bodies, a slick Corvette, and a fastback Mustang. When the final announcement was made, Chad Farischon’s ’69 Camaro, built by Mountain Home Street Rods, went home with the PPG Street Machine of the Year title. The purpose-built pro-touring machine employs Detroit Speed suspension components, Forgeline wheels, and a 750hp Mercury Racing SB4 engine, along with a full complement of well-designed features and details. Watch for in-depth features on both the Camaro and the Fleetline in the November Goodguys Gazette.
Grand Prize Giveaway Nova Goes Home with Next Generation Rodder This issue was just going to press after the incredible 23rd Summit Racing Nationals Presented by PPG in Columbus, Ohio. There were many highlights throughout the weekend, but one of the biggest came at the end of the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon when we finally gave away the 2019/2021 Grand Prize Giveaway ’67 Nova built by Designer Street Rods. There was plenty of anticipation as qualifiers were called up and drew a key out of a hat before lining up behind the Nova. Then, one by one, they sat in the driver’s seat to see which key would fire up the car’s supercharged Edelbrock LS3 crate engine. Nobody was more surprised than 22-year-old Hunter Detrich when he sat down, turned the key, and felt that engine crank to life! Hunter was speechless as he jumped from the car, high-fived his father, and tried to hold back tears of happiness. The full custom Nova – built using a Real Deal Steel body, Detroit Speed suspension components, B-Forged wheels, and TMI seats, along with a host of other great aftermarket components – is going to a good home. Young Hunter is not only an active
second-generation rodder, but a winner of the Goolsby Next Generation award from the 2019 Kentucky Nationals for his 1945 Dodge pickup, an ongoing street rod project. When we last saw Hunter, he was getting ready to hop in the Nova and drive it back to his home in Kentucky. Congratulations, Hunter!

Rockin’ Music City The Rodding World Tunes Up at the Goodguys 15th BASF Nashville Nationals WORDS: GOODGUYS PHOTOS: STEVEN BUNKER, JOHN JACKSON, DAMON LEE, TERRY LYSAK
Goodguys rocked Tennessee on Memorial Day weekend, bringing three days of mechanical music and thousands of fine rides to the 15th BASF Nashville Nationals May 28-30! After two years away, car and truck enthusiasts in Music City and beyond were eager and excited to get back to Nissan Stadium for some Goodguys-style mechanical melodies! Nashville is one of our favorite hot rod cities and the region surrounding it is chock full of great shops, world-class builders, and extremely active enthusiasts. Hot rods, customs, vintage trucks, and classic cars from all over the area could already be seen cruising the city in the days leading up to the event and quickly filled the south side of the stadium property on Friday, despite some morning rain. One of the most-anticipated portions of the event is the Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year competition, which kicked off with a Friday reliability run – one of the soggier runs we’ve had. The hot rods persevered, though, and by Saturday afternoon we had Top Five selected. Each car represented a slightly different take on the hot rod concept, and all were more than worthy of representing the genre. The winner was finally revealed on Sunday, when John Hornbrook‘s ’32 Ford three-window coupe was officially crowned

the 2021 Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year! There were a lot more awards to go around. The Saturday Specialty Parking areas were bursting with rides vying for awards – especially the Builder’s Choice parking lot. Bobby Alloway said he easily could have chosen 30 worthy vehicles, but he managed to whittle it down to 10. Beyond that, we had a full slate of Goodguys Top 12 Of The Year Finalists: Keith Lane’s ’50 Chevy pickup went home with the Scott’s Hotrods Truck of the Year Early EVENT SPONSORS finalist spot; Jason Graham’s ’63 Galaxie took the Vintage Air Custom Rod of the Year finalist nod; the Billet Specialties Muscle Car of the Year finalist spot went to Chet Biggers and his ’70 AAR

Rounding out the select awards were two Chevrolet Builder of the Year finalists: Bobby Alloway took the GM Iron award for the ’70 Chevelle he built, while Customs and Hot Rods of Andice nabbed the GM Retro Iron award for the Willys Gasser coupe they just finished restoring. The Goodguys media team liked the low, streamlined shape of Steve VanMorkhoven’s chopped ’39 LaSalle for the Goodguys Feature Pick, while Jimmy Shaw’s ’70 GMC pickup took home the Fuel Curve Pick. The Nashville AutoCross course welcomed the largest contingent of racers to date this season, with fast and furious action throughout the weekend and many new faces and cars on the track. Josh Leisinger topped the PRO-X class and doubled up by running quicker than Robby Unser to claim the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout win. In PRO, Jason Brady won the class, but Ryan Mathews came back from third place and won the shootout. The Forgeline Street Machine class saw a double-

up class and shootout win from Mike Goodman, while Stacy Herman took the FiTech Fuel Injection Challenger class victory. When the dust had settled after the Wilwood Disc Brakes All American Sunday action, Gary Farless emerged as the victor in both the class and shootout. Of course, you needn’t be an award winner or champion racer to have fun at a Goodguys event – all three days offered a wealth of automotive fun. Beyond checking out the rides and catching up with friends, there was plenty of cruising to be
done, not to mention multiple Nitro Thunderfest exhibitions and a smokin’ Burnout Competition. Live music kept things lively on the Hunter’s Customs entertainment stage, while a massive turnout of vendors and exhibitors provided opportunities to browse and shop for parts. Add in an expansive swap meet and Sunday fun with Meguiar’s All American Sunday, and there was enough mechanical music to keep rodders rockin’ and rollin’ all weekend long. BUILDER’S CHOICE CHOSEN BY
BOBBY ALLOWAY
OF
1 Bobby Alloway has been building distinctive, award-winning street rods, cruisers, and muscle cars since 1991 at his Tennessee-based Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop and is a household name among rodding enthusiasts. He’s all about building clean, well-detailed rides with attitude, distinguished by big ’n little wheel-and-tire combos, tastefully executed modifications, and big horsepower under the hood. He knows good craftsmanship and design when he sees it and had a tremendous variety of worthy rides from which to choose at the Nashville Nationals. He said it was especially tough narrowing it down to just 10 selections this year, but he managed to complete the task and deliver a winning lineup. Let’s take a look at what grabbed his attention. The custom-mixed Vanguard Green metallic paint really pops on Van Bingham’s ’67 Corvette, especially with the complement of big-inch Forgeline wheels and redline tires. The widened ’Vette is built on a custom chassis from Street Shop Inc. and has LS7 power and disc brakes, along with custom leather upholstery by Steve Holcomb inside augmented by Classic Instruments gauges and air conditioning.
2
Check out this tasty chocolate and beige ’58 Chevy Yeoman wagon belonging to Derek and Eileen Eisenbiesz! Built on a Roadster Shop chassis rolling on custom wheels, this ’50s classic has modern LT4 power under the hood and Wilwood disc brakes to reign in the speed. Stitch master Paul Atkins got the nod for the equally tasty upholstery inside, which is augmented with a custom console, tilt column, and air conditioning.
3
We’ve been fans of Beth Hazelwood’s ’74 Duster known as “Kasper” ever since it rolled out of Goolsby Customs a couple years ago. Bobby Alloway likes it, too, and who can blame him with elements like a Roadster Shop chassis and a Hellcat Hemi under the subtly modified body. Custommachined Evod wheels help to keep the car’s racing heritage alive (Beth drag raced it in the ’70s and ’80s), while the copper-and-white paint and retro upholstery offer a proper ’70s vibe.

Ken Stek had just finished his ’57 Ford Ranch Wagon hours before making the long drive from Iowa to Tennessee. Built at Ken’s StekLo Rodz Shop, the mint green and white wagon benefits from a custom front suspension that helps get it low over steel wheels with Diamondback wide whites, plus a contemporary 4.6-liter SOHC engine backed by an overdrive automatic transmission. Inside, Ken fitted a ‘64 Galaxie dash and built a custom console between the custom-upholstered bucket seats.

We featured David Kennedy’s ’32 Ford roadster pickup in the March 2021 Gazette and were happy to see it caught Bobby Alloway’s eye in Nashville. Built by David and his son Kirby at Kennedy’s Hot Rod Shop, the Brookville-bodied roadster is based on a custom frame built with ASC rails, a Super Bell front axle, and So-Cal rear ladder bars, with 16-inch So-Cal knock-off wheels that get rolling courtesy of a well-detailed small-block Chevy backed by a Tremec five-speed. Mudstone brown paint and a Wanlass windshield finish it off nicely.
6
Phil and Debbie Becker’s ’32 Ford Vicky was the Goodguys Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year in 2019 and still gets out to events on a regular basis. Finished by Dave Lane at FastLane Rod Shop, the car has Lane’s signature attention to detail, plus features like a Moal torsion bar chassis, 15- and 17-inch Dayton wire wheels, and a cleverly detailed small-block Chevy engine with eight-stack injection and one-off air cleaners. Beautiful details and clean execution abound on this victorious Vicky.
7
Builder Mike Rutter has had a good year with the ’66 Charger he built for Doyle Thomas. We featured it in the January 2021 Gazette and it has picked up Builder’s Choice awards in Raleigh and now Nashville. The first-year Charger rides on Reilly Motorsports front and rear suspensions with RideTech coil-overs and one-off 18- and 19-inch wheels from Sage Speed and Custom. There’s a late-model supercharged Hellcat Hemi under the hood, Axalta Sahara Bronze paint on the body, and beautiful brown leather Paul Atkins upholstery inside.

Alloway gravitated toward earth tones with his Top 10, including Scotty Hooper’s beautiful chocolate and cream ’58 Corvette. The classic ’Vette is built on a Roadster Shop chassis with an independent rear suspension and has a late-model LT4 backed by a Tremec sixspeed transmission and breathing through Borla exhaust. The goodlooking wheels are from Forgeline and interior guru Paul Atkins gets credit for the tasty custom upholstery in the two-place cockpit. GOOD-GUYS.COM y 33

A great stance and a bitchin’ set of Billet Specialties wheels are just a couple of things to like about Brian Kilgore’s ’66 Chevelle sedan. Beautiful bodywork and that gleaming ruby red finish add to the appeal, as does the clean and well-detailed engine compartment surrounding the 383c.i. stroker small block. A fivespeed transmission makes driving a little more fun for Brian, while disc brakes and air conditioning improve the experience. Finished off with custom upholstery inside, it makes for one clean muscle machine!

It’s difficult to deny the appeal of a custom VW bus, especially a custom version that’s as cool as this beauty belonging to Rodney Harris. The result of a five-year build, it has a narrowed front suspension to aid in the low stance, plus disc brakes, Porsche wheels, a safari popout windshield, and beautiful green PPG paint. GM IRON BUILDER OF THE YEAR F I N A L I S T
BOBBY ALLOWAY • LOUISVILLE, TENNESSEE JERRY RICE’S
WORDS: DAMON LEE
1970 CHEVROLET CHEVELLE PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
You know a hot rod builder has achieved a level of prominence when his cars develop a signature style – one that’s described using his name as an adjective. Lobek had it. Coddington had it. And Bobby Alloway has it, too. What’s an “Alloway style” hot rod? It typically has a distinctive and dramatic big ’n little wheel-and-tire combo. It sits very low and on a rake. And it’s almost always Bobby’s favorite color: black. Alloway has been building hot rods like this for decades and has a loyal customer base devoted to his style. So, it was little surprise that one of his latest builds – this badass black ’70 Chevelle crafted for Jerry Rice – earned Alloway the Chevrolet GM Iron Builder of the Year finalist nod in Nashville. This build began the way most Alloway 38 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
builds do, with an all-new Art Morrison chassis that’s narrowed in the front and rear to Alloway’s specifications. The Morrison front suspension uses Wilwood spindles, hubs, and disc brakes, plus Strange coil-over shocks and rack-and-pinion steering from Detroit Speed. A four-link rear suspension locates the Currie 9-inch rearend. The signature rolling stock came in the form of custom 20x10- and 17x7-inch Billet Specialties five-spoke wheels wrapped in Toyo 265/50/20 and 225/50/17 tires. A first glance under the hood might lead you to believe this is an old-school big block Chevelle, but that’s actually a Keith Dorton-built LSX topped with NASCAR SB2 valve covers. Look closer and you’ll see a faux distributor that’s mounted in front to promote further headscratching. The 454c.i. LS is fed by a Holley
carb on a Chevrolet Performance intake and churns out 720 horsepower, sending it through a Tremec TKO five-speed from American Powertrain. Careful scrutiny of the body reveals subtle tricks like shaved side marker lights, tucked bumpers, a deleted license recess on the front bumper, and the elimination of the fresh air flap on the cowl induction hood. Naturally, the panel gaps and fit are impeccable, as is the deep, black PPG paint, which is complemented by LeMans Blue SS stripes. The blue accents match the leather upholstery stitched by Steve Holcomb of Pro Auto Custom Interiors over modified Recaro seats and a custom console and rear seat. Even the dash was wrapped in leather before being fitted with Classic Instruments and Vintage Air. The end result is the type of muscle machine we expect from Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop. It’s clean. It’s mean. It’s got a lot of horsepower. And it’s got big wheels and tires stuffed in the quarter panels. In short, it’s an Alloway-style hot rod, and it’s just plain bitchin’.

fter an online entry and evaluation process in 2020, it was great to bring the Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year competition back to Nashville this year. When the contest is about determining a hot rod’s attitude, it’s a definite plus to hear how it sounds, see what it looks like rolling down the road, and make sure the owner is willing to flog on it. It’s also a lot more fun to do this all in person! Hot Rod of the Year is one of the toughest Top 12 awards because it’s not just about build quality, details, fit and finish, and polish. It’s about attitude and presence. It’s about performance potential and the willingness to use it. We say it right in the award criteria: no cream puffs! A big part of the weekend competition is having contenders show they are street driven, have a mean attitude, and scream the words “Hot Rod!” This year’s contenders checked all those boxes and then some. A field of nearly 20 hot rods rolled out of Nissan Stadium Friday morning for a 100-mile reliability run through the backroads of Tennessee. To add another layer into the mix, Mother Nature welcomed us with a downpour of rain for the first half of the day. It was likely the most grueling Hot Rod of the Year reliability run we’ve had in recent years. The route was planned and led by Tennessee local Ben Smithson of Smithson Speed and Engineering. The first leg took us to the town of Portland to visit Advanced Plating’s new facility, and then over to the Days Gone By Museum to see a cool collection of

ADVANCED PLATING
STOP ONE
The first stop on our run was Advanced Plating’s expansive new facility in the town of Portland. Steve and Sherri Tracy and the entire Advanced Plating crew greeted us like celebrities with VIP indoor parking, warm coffee, and sweet donuts. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at how they restore all that brightwork and make it shiny again and a peek at Steve Tracy’s cool collection of street rods, muscle cars, classics, and race cars.
old farming equipment, vehicles, and other memorabilia. After a lunch stop at Campione’s Taste of Chicago in Goodlettsville, the group headed to Music City Raceway for burnouts and 1/8-mile passes, which are always highlights of the competition. Even though the dragstrip runs and tire-frying action aren’t officially judged or ranked, they do count for style points – we like the know the car owners are willing to push these hot rods hard! This group embraced the drag strip experience with massive burnouts and a handful of cars dipping into the low 9-second range for 1/8th-mile ETs! All Hot Rod of the Year contenders were parked together on Saturday for a final review, where build quality, stance, fit and finish, and attitude 48 y SEPTEMBER.2021

Not far down the road from Advanced Plating is the Days Gone By Museum, a fun and massive collection of vintage farming equipment, cars and trucks, motorcycles, race cars, and other transportation-related memorabilia.
were all taken into consideration. Five Fords rose to the top as finalists: Danny Burroughs’ ’32 Ford five-window coupe, Brandon McCullough’s Deuce roadster, Natalie Bolea’s ’30 Model A, Todd Stamm’s ’32 Ford sedan, and John Hornbrook’s ’32 Ford three-window coupe. There was a lot of anticipation leading up to revealing the 2021 Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year winner Sunday afternoon. And it was most definitely a tight competition. When the envelope was finally opened, John Hornbrook’s killer ’32 Ford three-window coupe, built by Murray Kustom Rods in Texas, was officially crowned the 2021 Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year. Before we take a closer look at it, though, let’s check out the fun had on the reliability run and during the selection process.
CAMPIONE’S TASTE OF CHICAGO STOP THREE
The rain hit really hard as we made our way to Goodlettsville for a lunch stop at Campione’s Taste of Chicago. Everyone was ready for a break and some great food, and thankfully the rain had led up by the time we got there.
MUSIC CITY RACEWAY
STOP FOUR
Our final stop at Music City Raceway was a highlight for everyone, with tire-frying burnouts and 1/8-mile drag strip passes to let these hot rods exercise! While the burnouts and passes aren’t officially judged or ranked, they offer an opportunity for style points! A handful of cars even dipped into the low 9-second range for 1/8th-mile ETs!

1932 FORD FIVE-WINDOW COUPE DANNY BURROUGHS – TOMBALL, TEXAS
All Hot Rod of the Year contenders had miles put on them in Nashville, but Danny Burroughs was the only one to drive his car to the event – more than 750 miles from Texas, braving storms along the way! In fact, Danny has logged more than 6,000 miles on the Deuce five-window coupe since completing it last July at his business, Bruce’s Rod Shop. Danny used original Ford frame rails as the basis for the chassis, which has a So-Cal front suspension, Super Bell dropped axle, and a Halibrand quick-change rearend. Massive 16x10-inch ET rear wheels and Firestone dirt track tires are paired with skinny Michelin-wrapped 15x4.5-inch American Rebel wheels in front. The healthy, welldressed 468c.i. big block Chevy puts out 550hp and is backed by a Doug Nash five-speed. Danny performed the 2¼-inch top chop and needed rust repair work before turning the fenderless coupe over to employee Bill Berry for final bodywork and the PPG Jeep Anvil paint. It was complemented by maroon Relicate leather upholstery inside, stitched by Phil Cato and augmented with a Bell steering wheel, Mullins column, and Auto Meter gauges. Danny gives credit to his wife, Kay, and his family for their support, and says he’s blown away from the positive comments he’s had from other rodders about the coupe.
1932 FORD ROADSTER
BRANDON McCULLOUGH – GLENNPOOL, OKLAHOMA
Brandon McCullough says his dream was to build a “clean, simple, traditional ’32 roadster I could take to the drag strip during the day – and nice enough to take my wife to dinner in the evening.” Thanks to his good friend Jason Smith of the Hot Rod Garage and the support of his wife, Martha, that dream was fulfilled. The project started with a chassis from Blackboard Hot Rods with a dropped and drilled Super Bell front axle, Halibrand quickchange rear, ’40 Ford brakes with drilled backing plates, and 16-inch Ford front wheels paired with 18-inch Divco wheels out back. The traditional vibe was maintained with a Keith Harp-built 327c.i. Chevy small block topped with ’59 Corvette dual quads and backed by a T5 five-speed with a ’39 Ford shifter arm. The Brookville roadster body got some subtle tricks like custom sills, louvered hood tops and deck lid, and a lengthened dash before Jason applied the PPG Bozworth Red paint. Brian Willingham built the top and Aaron Lawrence built the seat, which was covered in Symphony Vintage vinyl by Fast Al’s Interiors. Stewart Warner wings gauges were used to fill the original Hollywood gauge panel. Brandon says building the roadster was a great experience but driving it and building friendships have been even better. That’s what hot rodding is all about!
50 y SEPTEMBER.2021
1930 FORD MODEL A COUPE NATALIE BOLEA – MOON TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA
Although she’s just 19 years old, Natalie Bolea has years of experience around hot rods, having attended events with her father, Rick, since she was in a stroller. Rick’s chopped ’33 Ford coupe has been a regular at Goodguys events in recent years and inspired Natalie to team up with EJ Talik at Craftworks Fabrication to build this killer Model A coupe. The build’s foundation was a Roadster Shop frame built by Craftworks using a Super Bell dropped and drilled front axle and a four-link and coil-overs locating a Currie 9-inch rearend. It all rolls on 16- and 18-inch Dayton wire wheels. The engine fools many people – it’s actually a Don Hardy-built Chevy LS dressed up to look like a small-block Ford, complete with Edelbrock dual four barrels and custom lake-style headers. It’s backed with a 700R4 transmission. The rusty body was repaired and treated to a 4-inch top chop, handmade roof insert, custom quarter panels, and other subtle tricks before Palmer Enterprises sprayed the PPG Ceramic Matrix Gray finish. Craftworks built the custom dash (with center-mounted Dakota Digital gauges) and seats and enlisted Stewart Upholstery to stitch the maroon vinyl upholstery. The freshly finished coupe proved itself on the Friday reliability run, but the real victory could be seen in Natalie’s smile as she beamed with pride at her finished ride.
1932 FORD ROADSTER TODD STAMM – SUGAR LAND, TEXAS
There’s no substitute for rare vintage parts when building a traditional-style hot rod, and Todd Stamm’s Deuce Tudor has more than its share. It was the only Flathead-powered rod in the Top Five and earned well-deserved accolades for its pedigreed parts list. This was another build by Hot Rod Garage, where the modified Deuce frame was fitted with an early Mor-Drop filled axle, ’34 Ford wishbones, lever shocks, and a buggy spring rear suspension holding a Halibrand quick-change rearend. It rolls on 16-inch ’39 Ford wide five wheels backed by Lincoln disc brakes. The focal point is the ’48 Ford Flathead outfitted with ultra-rare Grancor (Granatelli Corporation) heads and a matching Grancor intake with triple Stromberg carbs. Custom stainless headers and a Vertex magneto are also part of the package, along with a ’39 Zephyr transmission and Mitchell overdrive. The body’s top was chopped 3½-inches in front and 3-inches in the rear, the gas tank was relocated, and other nips and tucks were executed before the PPG Washington Blue paint was applied. The cabin is a tour de force of detail, from the aluminum floors and gauge panel, to the custom Classic Instruments gauges, cloth wiring, and beautiful Chuck Rowland Relicate leather upholstery. Expertly built and full of detail, Stamm’s Tudor proves that sedans can be every bit as cool of hot rods as roadsters and coupes.

CHAMPION COUPE
JOHN HORNBROOK‘S ’32 FORD THREE-WINDOW COUPE CAPTURES GOODGUYS 2021 TANKS, INC. HOT ROD OF THE YEAR CROWN
WORDS: GOODGUYS PHOTOS: STEVEN BUNKER AND JOHN JACKSON
John Hornbrook’s chopped Deuce three-window coupe is more than a tough-looking, back-to-basics hot rod. It’s also the fulfillment of a 40-year family dream. “This car has been owned by my father since 1980,” John says. “It was gifted to me in 2012 with the stipulation of completing the car and enjoying it. I enlisted Murray Kustom Rods to get the car back to its deserving condition and making a simple, traditional hot rod driver with a Bonneville attitude, since my father and I competed at the Salt Flats.” The bitchin’ blue coupe was officially crowned as the Goodguys 2021 Tanks, Inc. Hot Rod of the Year following an intense weekend of competition May 28-30 at the 15th BASF Nashville Nationals. It went up against nearly 20 rowdy and ready competitors and a fantastic Top Five lineup. In the end, the coupe’s attitude, construction quality, and performance came together to earn it the title. John says the coupe was little more than a body shell when his father, Charles, first got it. The idea was always to build a cool hot rod, but other projects seemed to come first, including a long string of motorcycles and a Bonneville racer built from two British Berkeley bodies. The Bonneville experiences influenced Charles’s ideas for the Deuce, to the point where he performed a top chop inspired by the famous Pierson Brothers coupe – an aggressive and angled slice. He eventually pieced the car together and made it a roller. When John got the car back in 2012, he invested considerable time researching shops that could take on the build. He says he was impressed with Fort Worth-based Murray Kustom Rods as soon as he walked in the door. “The thing that sold me was the quality of welding,” John says. “And they also knew what they were talking about.” John says he could tell that shop owner Heath Murray understood his vision and goal for the coupe. “I told him I wanted the same aggressive chop and stance,” John says – a hot rod that looked like “if a guy knew what he was doing in the ’50s and built himself a super nice coupe.” The Murray Kustom Rods team used tried-and-true hot rod components to get started, like a modified Pete & Jake’s frame, Super Bell dropped axle, a Currie 9-inch rearend on a ’32 Ford spring, and a TrackMaster cowl steering box. Kinmont disc brakes from Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop added some nostalgia flavor, as did the 16x5- and 16x6-inch Wheel Vintiques wheels and Coker Firestone 4.60-16 and 7.00-16 tires. The small-block Chevy V8 is a fundamental hot rod choice, as well. It’s fed by a trio of Stromberg carbs on an Edelbrock intake and uses Corvette-style manifolds and GOOD-GUYS.COM y 53

customized finned aluminum valve covers that now incorporate Hornbrook’s name. Power is transferred through a Centerforce clutch to a Tremec five-speed transmission controlled by a custom swan-neck shifter. The team had its work cut out for them on the Deuce body. They removed the previously chopped and filled top and started fresh with a still-aggressive slice that removed 5.5-inches from the A-pillars and 4.5-inches from the rear. They also lowered the rear window and used reproduction doors and other metal panels from Brookville to repair and refine the areas that required attention. When the initial metal fabrication was complete, the coupe went to A&R Restorations in Emory, Texas, for final bodywork and fit and finish. That’s where the beautiful BASF Washington Blue paint was applied, too. Details like ’47 Buick taillights and Guide 682-J headlights on a custom headlight bar helped to complete the look. “One thing that’s a surprise to me, The stance is but is just off the charts, is the dash,” just so cool. The woodgrain finish on it It’s refined and the garnish moldings, painted by looking, but it’s Darren Winzell of Gasoline Art, was not part of the initial plan, but ended up a tough and being a welcome idea from Heath Murmean-looking ray. Heath also helped locate the ’34 car.” Dodge gauge assembly that further distinguishes the dash. John says the interior as a whole is nicer than originally planned, thanks in part to that dash and to the Relicate leather upholstery skillfully stitched in a classic pleated pattern over a Glide bench seat and custom door and side panels. Other interior details include a Limeworks steering column, ’40 Ford wheel, and vintage-style wiring from American Autowire. They even managed to stealthily fit a Vintage Air system into the car.

CUSTOM ROD OF THE YEAR JASON GRAHAM • PORTLAND, TN
1963 GALAXIE
WORDS: TODD RYDEN PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
When you think of a Jason Graham-built hot rod, the picture of a low-slung, wickedly chopped, channeled and fenderless coupe or sedan probably comes to mind. He’s worked hard to develop this recognizable style, but he also wanted to show what his shop could accomplish with a full-size ‘60s custom build. The result earned him a finalist position for Vintage Air Custom Rod of the Year in Nashville. The ’63 Galaxie body had been passed on by other shops and deemed too rough to build, which only fueled Jason’s desire to build it as a personal project. He worked with designer Eric Brockmeyer to help put his vision to paper and got busy. With a beat, rusty starting point, Jason opted for a complete Roadster Shop Revo chassis as a solid foundation. The front track width was widened 2.5-inches so the Coyote engine and 6R80E drivetrain could sit lower in the frame. A Flaming River steering rack and column is mated to a DCE electronic power assist steering to keep things clean under the hood. Hydraulics are of course still in place to activate the Baer sixand four-piston calipers clamping big-inch disc brakes. A set of one-off 19x9.5- and 20x12-inch wheels are wrapped in 265/35/19 and 345/30/20 58 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Federal rubber. With the chassis and driveline mapped out, Jason got busy on the Galaxie’s rough sheet metal. The hood was slightly raised in the center to gain a smidgen more height for the supercharger and was also shaved of all trim. The rockers were boxed and lowered ¾-inch to match the profile of the chassis from front to rear. Both bumpers were shaved and modified, with the front receiving an air intake and the rear being reworked for flush-fitting exhaust tips before receiving a brushed nickel finish. A rear belly pan was added along with custom side and beltline moldings plus an impressive one-piece billet grille by One Ten Machining. The BASF Glasurit Inferno Red, applied by Madison Alexander, looks out of this world on the custom Galaxie. Inside, a pair of comfy bucket seats welcome passengers up front with a custom console and completely leather wrapped dash. Jason’s team designed most of the interior with John Miller stepping up to fine tune and finish off everything in Sequioa leather. Instrumentation comes from
Dakota Digital, Vintage Air keeps the temperature comfortable, and the wiring is courtesy of Ron Francis. Sure, it’s got fenders and a stock-height roof, but make no mistake – this Galaxie is definitely a Jason Graham hot rod! Story ending symbol

We’d love to learn the backstory on Mike Hardy’s sectioned and channeled ’31 Model A. With a dual-quad 409 and deep-dish Halibrands hanging out of the rear fenders, it looks like it might have an interesting hot rod history.
Shallon Broussard’s ’64 Ford Econoline rides on a custom chassis fabricated by Popeye’s Rod Shop equipped with air bags and neatly tucks slotted Intro wheels. A 327c.i. small block backed with a Turbo 350 provides the power, while custom-mixed PPG paint coats the smooth panels.
We’re accustomed to seeing ’61 Impalas as “bubble top” hardtops, but you could also get the Impala trim package on two-door sedans. Josh Morton’s example looks great with a dropped stance, oversized wheels, and reliable power.

GM RETRO IRON BUILDER OF THE YEAR F I N A L I S T
CUSTOMS AND HOT RODS OF ANDICE • BROWNWOOD, TX PHIL PARKERS’
1941 WILLYS
WORDS: DAVID DOUCETTE PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
Any fan of vintage drag racing, especially the storied Gasser classes, has probably seen the NHRA-produced video that follows a pair of Southern California drag racers to the 1959 NHRA Nationals in Detroit. Along the way, the SoCal group meets up with racers from Texas and their combined fortunes are documented in “Ingenuity in Action.” One of the Texas racers on the journey, a young Phil Parker, piloted a 1941 A/Gas Willys named Gran-Ma. He raced the Willys through the early-’60s, then parked it before selling it in the ’70s. That owner raced it for years before selling it to a third owner who turned the Willys in a prostreet hot rod. Eventually Phil reacquired the historic racer 62 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
and, thanks to the team at Customs and Hot Rods of Andice, the reborn Willys and CHRA are finalists for the Chevrolet Performance GM Retro Iron Builder of the Year award. Restoring a historic race car that’s more than 60 years old is no easy task. Owner and builder have to balance period accuracy with modern techniques when re-creating missing pieces and elements. Back in the day, drag cars went through an evolutionary process, from re-bodying damaged vehicles to upgrading powerplants. Gran-Ma was no exception and the task for CHRA was to recreate the original version. Michael Kaiser, shop foreman at CHRA, explains how the vintage Willys ended up in the shop known for creating iconic hot rods and cus-
toms, including a the 2016 Ridler Award winner. “One of my former customers was related to Phil and he knew the quality of our work,” Michael says. “The only things we will restore are former race cars because we’re passional about that. As long as the client will let us do high-quality work, we’ll take it on.” The restored Gran-Ma features a 377c.i., 640-horsepower small block Chevy, topped by a Hilborn injector setup on a vintage Dyer’s blower. A TH400 transmission pushes power to a 9-inch Ford rear supported by a four-link suspension. The front end was returned to proper Gasser height with a chrome-plated tube axle and leaf springs, and Halibrand wheels adorn each corner. With the exception of the upholstery (handled by JJs Auto Upholstery) all fabrication, wiring, and paint work was handled by CHRA. While the goal was to recreate the original without over-restoring the car, some interior changes were made. The wiring was hidden as much as possible, for example, and the door panels and console were updated a little after consultation with Phil. “It was an honor (working with Phil),” Michael says. “Having the original owner/driver brought the whole history of hot rodding alive.”
Oksana Hansen has a few cool rides she could have cruised out to the event but chose to bring this handsome Hemi-powered ’54 Chrysler New Yorker Newport coupe.
Jonathan Goolsby spent some time chatting with Ben Frensko after Ben’s F100 was selected as a contender for the Goolsby Next Generation award. It’s great to see young enthusiasts like Ben getting involved in the hobby!
It’s tough to resist a car as cute as Jerry Gammons’ ’57 Metropolitan, especially knowing that it’s updated with a Mustang II IFS and a 4.3-liter Chevy V6 backed by a 4L60E overdrive automatic.
Erik Lopez’s ’64 Biscayne still sports its original paint and interior, and while a 230c.i. straight six still provides the power it’s been fully rebuilt and dressed up to provide reliability and style.

MUSCLE MACHINE OF THE YEAR CHARLIE MALONE • BRIGHTON, TN
1966 CHEVY CHEVELLE WORDS: DAVID DOUCETTE PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
Think back to your first car. Perhaps when you were 16 and spent a few hundred dollars on a used Chevelle. Do you still have it today? Do you wish you’d kept it? Charlie Malone doesn’t have to answer those what-if questions. Charlie bought his ’66 Chevelle back in 1974 and it still resides in his garage. Originally powered by a 283c.i. V8 with a Powerglide, Charlie’s prized possession served him well, from daily driver to drag racer, to the slick and very capable muscle machine you see today. Thanks to the crew at U-Wish Street Rods in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the current version of Charlie’s Chevelle honors the original black exterior with subtle modifications and a gleaming coat of PPG black paint. The smooth sheet metal features Kindig door handles, shaved and narrowed bumpers, and the elimination of most badging. Riding on a Scott’s Hot Rod chassis, the Chevelle features coil-over shocks and rack-andpinion steering, along with a narrowed 9-inch Ford rearend supported by a four-bar rear suspension. Wilwood 14-inch disc brakes with six-piston calipers are mounted on all four corners behind 19x9- and 20x12-inch Rushforth wheels encased in Michelin radials. 66 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Under the hood sits a driveline that wasn’t even a fantasy back in 1966. Surrounded by a custom-built radiator support and inner fender panels, a supercharged GM LT4 cranks out 650 horsepower, channeling it through a GM 4L75E automatic transmission. Spent gases are handled by a custom exhaust with SpinTech mufflers. The custom red leather interior mimics the original pattern and was stitched and installed by Cecil’s Upholstery in Covington, Tennessee. Bucket seats and the center console with stock shifter came from a ’66 SS model. The stock dash is updated with Dakota Digital gauges and an Ididit tilt steering column topped with a custom billet wheel. A Vintage Air system keeps the interior cool or warm, depending on the Tennessee weather. Charlie says planning the current build had its challenges, especially choosing the many components that go into a ground-up build. It looked like all those parts were working in harmony as he flogged the Chevelle around the Nashville AutoCross course. Charlie says his
only regret is wishing he’d had the Chevelle rebuilt sooner, as it spent about 25 years hibernating in the garage while life, work, and other projects took precedent. Now, back to your first car. If you’d kept it, how would it compare to Charlie’s Chevelle? Story ending symbol

JIMMY SHAW’S ’70 GMC SHOWS THE CUSTOM POTENTIAL OF STEPSIDE PICKUPS WORDS: TODD RYDEN PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
You don’t see a lot of custom stepside GM trucks on the road, which is one of the reasons Jimmy Shaw wanted to build this ’70 GMC into a road warrior. Jimmy has a couple fleetside C10s but decided to give the stepside some love through the touch of Jesse Greening and his team at Greening Auto Company. Jimmy and Jesse have worked together on a couple other builds, including Jimmy’s 200mph ’71 Maverick, so he only gave Jesse a couple directives for this project: lean the hood back like the early gen-two C10s, and clean up the drip rails. Of course, refining and cleaning up what the factory developed is right in Greening’s wheelhouse. In fact, it’s safe to say that this GMC could be a class study in refining a vintage truck with modern technology and performance. As requested, the drip rails of the GMC were reworked and reduced in size for a subtle update and the hood was sliced and leaned back giving it the feel of the ’67 model. The bumpers were pulled in slightly and all of the seams and gaps were tightened and perfected. The bed floor was raised to accommodate the stance and suspension, but there’s still room for luggage and even a spare. The tailgate chains were upgraded to latches to protect the custom blue BASF Glasurit paint that was based off a classic Corvette Bahama Blue color. Click open the OEM door handle and you know immediately that you’re getting into a 1970 pickup, albeit a restified version. Greening left the factory dash in place but updated it with a new gauge panel from Classic Instruments, Vintage Air controls are in the stock location, and even an OEM-looking radio is in place (though the sound system has been thoroughly upgraded). A leather-wrapped dash pad matches the modernized buddy buckets and console, which M&M Hot Rod Interiors covered with Alcantara leather. It’s a perfect blend of modern amenities and comfort with vintage GMC styling. This motif carries throughout the truck, of course, but is exemplified under the hood where a 6.0L LS engine resides. The LS has been detailed in Chevy Orange and with a set of vintage 305c.i. V6 valve cov70 y SEPTEMBER.2021
ers thanks to adapters from Don Hardy Race Cars. The plastic factory intake was replaced with an aluminum Holley four-barrel intake topped with a Holley throttle body hidden under a dual snorkel air cleaner. With 425 horsepower running through a Bowler-built 4L60E, there is more than enough power on tap to get this stepside up to speed – quickly! The one area that could be considered a few steps over ‘refinement’ is hidden underneath the truck in the form of a Roadster Shop SPEC chassis. Jimmy plans to run this stepside hard and the RS Chassis delivers the handling, stance, and a comfortable ride for long hauls and more smiles per mile. Greening whittled up a set of custom wheels based on the original GMC 15-inch hubcaps, though the wheels measure 19x8-inches in the front with 20x13s in the rear. Jimmy road tripped the truck from Mississippi to Nashville where it debuted at our event and scored the Fuel Curve Pick of the weekend. Then, Jesse road tripped the truck to the Summit Racing Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, for another 1,100-mile cruise to make sure the truck is ready for the road. With an award and a couple thousand miles already accumulated, it’s proven and ready for Jimmy to hit the road for a few more weekend adventures! Story ending symbol

MUSCLE CAR OF THE YEAR CHET BIGGERS • ASHLAND, TN
1970 PLYMOUTH AAR ’CUDA WORDS: DAMON LEE PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
The Plymouth AAR ’Cuda had many hallmarks of the muscle car era: a scooped fiberglass hood, front and rear spoilers, side-exit exhaust, and bold strobe stripes along the body. Contrary to their big block and Hemi-powered brethren, however, these pony cars had more balanced performance. They were named after Dan Gurney’s All American Racers and built to emulate the race cars of the SCCA Trans Am circuit, with a heavy-duty suspension tuned for cornering and a potent 340c.i. small-block V8 topped with Six Barrel induction – a trio of Holley two-barrel carbs. When Chet Biggers was first smitten by seeing an AAR ’Cuda as a kid, it was likely the exciting visual elements and color that drew him in. After all, Chet grew up learning about bodywork in his father’s custom body shop, so flashy paint frequently caught his eye. It’s little wonder the AAR made a lasting impression. After spending 20 years pursuing a music career in Nashville, Chet rediscovered his interest in cars in his late-40s and soon started looking for an AAR ’Cuda. A friend in Florida clued him into this one, a two-owner vehicle stored inside since the late-’70s. It was mostly complete and mostly solid, except for some typical trunk pan rust. Chet handled the rust repair and other body74 y SEPTEMBER.2021
work on his own, putting the skills he learned from his father to good use. “Learning the newest technologies associated with bodywork was a challenge at first,” Chet says. “It had been 25 years.” As you can see, the results are top-notch, including the PPG Rallye Red paint and tricky Organosol black hood finish, both applied with help from his father, Paul. The 340 engine was rebuilt by Chuck Vaughn to factory specifications, including the hi-po heads, exhaust manifolds, dual-point distributor, and of course, that Six Pack induction setup. It’s backed by an A833 four-speed and an 8¾-inch rearend with a Sure Grip and 3.55:1 gears. The 15-inch Rallye wheels were wrapped in correct Goodyear Polyglas E60 and G60 tires. Things are equally factory correct inside, where there’s reproduction black vinyl upholstery from Legendary Interiors, Rallye gauges, a pistol-grip shifter, and a three-spoke woodgrain steering wheel, all as Plymouth intended. Chet is rightfully happy with the finished product and excited that the car has helped
introduce he and his wife, Tracy, to the world of old car enthusiasts. Even better is that Chet’s grandson, Jayden, spent a lot of time in the garage during the restoration, allowing that spark of enthusiasm to ignite in yet another generation. Story ending symbol
It’s hard to not like what Boris Maryanovsky and his Street Machinery crew are doing with their “stop, drop, and roll” treatments. This early-’60s GMC is a prime example with Wilwood brakes, air ride suspension, and LS power. An added vintage camper shell caps off the retro vibe.

TRUCK OF THE YEAR EARLY KEITH LAYNE • EDEN, NC
1950 CHEVY WORDS: DAVID DOUCETTE PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
Keith Layne has owned a variety of classic cars over the years, including a vintage Mustang and a Barracuda, but he’s a truck guy at heart. A ’59 Chevy pickup purchased for $125 and rebuilt in his grandfather’s garage was his high school transportation. The ’59 was sold before Keith headed off to college. Years passed as Keith grew his pharmacy business. One day a customer approached him to see if he was interested in looking at a ’50 Chevy pickup that her husband had wanted to restore before his death. “I figured the old truck had a dollar’s worth of nickel dents and was probably well past rebuilding, but I obliged the elderly lady out of respect and visited her late husband’s garage,” Keith says. To his surprise, the truck was in good shape and it went home with Keith. After initial efforts to restore the truck back to its original roots, Keith changed direction. He consulted with Scott Sheets of L&S Customs in Prospect Hill, North Carolina, and then delivered the truck so the extensive custom build could begin. The L&S crew massaged the body extensively, including custom tailgate hinges and latch, removing the door vent windows and exterior handles, and recessing the exhaust tips into the 80 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
rear bumper. The hood received special attention, particularly the hand-formed inner support structure, which matches the custom firewall and radiator cover. Similar custom panels can be found under the running boards. The intricate metalwork was covered by shimmering PPG Canyon Beige paint. The truck rides on a JW Rod Garage chassis with coil overs and rack-and-pinion steering in front and a four-bar suspension supporting the 9-inch rearend. Wilwood discs on all four corners handle the stopping chores. Nitto tires and Schott wheels (18x8 in the front, 20x10 in the rear) keep the truck grounded. Power comes from a 425hp GM LS3 crate motor fitted with Ultimate headers and a custom-built exhaust system featuring Flowmaster mufflers. A 4L60E automatic transmission is controlled by a 2010 Cadillac CTS shifter. L&S Customs built the one-of-a-kind engine cover that’s painted to match the body. The trick interior is the work of the Recovery Room, with custom seats and a hand-fabricated
console upholstered in beautifully stitched brown leather. A ’50 Chevy car dash houses Classic Instruments gauges, an American Autowire harness directs the electricity, and a Vintage Air system controls interior temperatures. The ididit tilt column is topped by a Billet Specialties wheel. Keith calls his truck the Fast Layne Fifty, an apt name for an amazing custom truck.

nitro thunderfest
We loved the stance and the no-nonsense black-on-black look of Pascal Barone’s ’52 Chevy coupe. It’s got a small-block Chevy for power, backed by a 700R4 automatic.
There are plenty of drummers in Nashville, but during Goodguys weekend it’s tough to beat the mechanical rhythm of a cackling nitro-fed race Hemi! The glorious sound reverberated off the downtown buildings three times during the weekend as the “Bruiser” Fiat, the “Rat Poison” T, and the “Rat Trap” Bantam-bodied Fuel Altereds fired up and sounded off, much to the delight of the gathered crowds. It was music to the ears of race fans and gearheads, and a feast for the senses as crowds soaked in the unmistakable smell of nitro and the vibrant colors of these historic drag machines.
The woodgrain inserts in Clint Albert’s ’74 K5 Blazer are a feature we usually see removed or replaced in these squarebody trucks, but looked right at home against the truck’s olive green paint, brown interior, and Billet Specialties wheels.

2021
AutoCrossers Make Noise in Nashville for the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout The Goodguys CPP AutoCross Series returned to the start of it all during the 15th BASF Nashville Nationals. This is where the first Goodguys AutoCross event happened 15 years ago. What began as a fun diversion has evolved into a competitive circuit with major awards and end-of-the-year points championships. It also serves as a proving ground for new products and technology from top aftermarket companies. The homecoming vibe in Nashville was evident when walking the pits, where we welcomed the largest contingent of racers to date this season. There was a strong lineup of seasoned AutoCross veterans joined by many new faces and cars. Friday morning rain delayed the start of competition, but once it ceased on Friday afternoon the action was non-stop as racers ran hard for a chance to face off in the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout on Saturday. Josh Leisinger topped the PRO-X class and qualified first for the PRO-X portion of the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout. After beating teammate Roger Burman in the shootout’s first round, Leisinger matched up in the final with Unser, who had topped Darrin Djernes in the first round. Leisinger and Unser are always competitive, and Unser laid down a blistering 39.683-second pass in the Team Speedway ’70 Camaro. But Leisinger prevailed, running a 39.427 in his Summit-sponsored ’64 Corvette for the double-up win. In PRO, Jason Brady won the class in his blazing-fast Blazer and was joined by Ron Scott Jr., Ryan Mathews, and Chris Smith in the PRO ladder of the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shoot84 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
out. Brady topped Smith and Mathews beat Scott in the shootout’s first round, setting up a final between Brady’s Blazer and Mathews’ fourth-gen Corvette. Mathews stepped up his game and ran a 40.249, which was just fast enough to top Brady’s 40.294 and deliver Mathews the shootout win. The Street Machine class saw Mike Goodman claim the class win in his ’81 Camaro, followed by Chris Wheatcraft, Bill Graves Sr., and Richard Giesey rounding out the top four qualifiers for the Street Machine portion of the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout. Goodman and Graves both advanced to the final round where Goodman’s 40.391 was enough to hold off Graves’ 42.556 (which included a cone penalty) and earn Goodman the double-up win. Danny Cartwright also managed to pull off a double-up trick in the LMC Truck class, claiming the class win in his ’68 C10 and fending off fellow Truck competitor Pat McGinnis, as well as FiTech Fuel Injection Challenger class competitors Stacy Herman and Charles Malone to win the Truck/Challenger portion of the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout. Herman was the FiTech Fuel Injection Challenger class winner in her ’80 Pontiac Trans Am. Sunday was a beautiful day, which made for a great turnout of vehicles to compete in the Wilwood Disc Brakes All American Sunday action. Gary Farless emerged as the victor in both the class and the All American Sunday shootout in his LS-swapped Nissan 240SX to wrap up the weekend action.

PRO CLASS WINNER FORGELINE STREET MACHINE CLASS WINNER WILWOOD MUSIC CITY MAYHEM SHOOTOUT WINNER Mike Goodman brought his ’81 Camaro down from Pennsylvania to compete and went home with a double-up win, topping the Forgeline Street Machine class and topping Goodguys regular Bill Graves Sr. in the final round of the Wilwood Music City Mayhem Shootout.
Darrin Djernes’ Rocket Racing Wheels-sponsored ’78 Datsun 280Z lives up to its sponsor name thanks to power from a turbocharged Toyota 2JZ engine cranking out 900 horsepower! The powerful Z placed third in the PRO-X class with a best time of 40.921.
Jason Brady won the PRO class in his blazing-fast Blazer with a best time of 40.13. He topped Chris Smith in the first round of the shootout and matched up with Ryan Mathews in the final. Brady ran a fast 40.294, but Mathews ran a faster 40.249 to claim the shootout win. FITECH CHALLENGER CLASS WINNER
Stacy Herman made her first Goodguys CPP AutoCross appearance of the season count, claiming the FiTech Challenger class win in her ’80 Trans Am with a 43.418-second run. She stepped it up in the final round of the Truck/Challenger shootout ladder, but her 42.775 was not enough to top the 42.247 run by LMC Truck competitor Danny Cartwright.
WILWOOD ALL AMERICAN SUNDAY CLASS WINNER WILWOOD ALL AMERICAN SUNDAY SHOOTOUT WINNER Robby Unser was competing in the Speedway Motors ’70 Camaro (and placed second in the PRO-X class), but probably enjoyed making fun runs in the company’s ’67 Camaro, which we haven’t seen in a while.
An LS engine in a slippery ’96 Nissan 240SX package proved to be a great combination for Gary Farless, who topped the Wilwood All American Sunday class and ran a 40.153-second pass in the final round of the All American Sunday Shootout to claim the double-up win. GOOD-GUYS.COM y 85

Danny Cartwright made an impressive appearance in his ’68 Chevy C10, wheeling it to the LMC Truck class win with a 42.361-second time. It may be rough around the edges, but Arnie Gonzalez’s ’51 Chevy sits right, handles well, and runs hard. It clocked a 48.95 in the LMC Truck class.
Modern muscle was built to run hard and that’s just what Dammeion Bearen did in his purple 2020 Challenger in the Wilwood All American Sunday class, turning in a best lap of 49.741 seconds.

award winners Ben Frensko’s father originally had this ’63 F100 as a shop truck. When Ben was 12, father and son started working to put the truck on a 2010 Crown Victoria chassis and floor, complete with a late-model 281c.i. V8. It’s now a cool and comfortable cruiser for Ben to represent the next generation of hot rod enthusiasts.
Next Generation Award (Sponsored by Goolsby Customs)
Traditional Homebuilt Heaven (Sponsored by Speedway Motors) Jack and Mary Warren built the fiberglass body themselves for this ’29 Ford Model A roadster pickup. The full-fendered beauty rides on a ’32 Ford frame with a 401c.i. Buick Nailhead for power and a distinctive “orange cream” two-tone treatment. Tasty!
Mighty Mustang (Sponsored by Golden Star Classic Auto Parts) Four generations of the Norton family have worked on this ’65 Mustang 2+2 fastback since it was purchased in 1984. David Norton was showing it in Nashville and told us that the white paint dates back to the mid-’80s and is complemented by factory red upholstery. A stock 289c.i. V8 gets the 18-inch Boss wheels rolling.
Dodge Truck Pick (Sponsored by LMC Truck) Michael and Kelly Yates’ ’38 Dodge pickup is all Mopar, with a 440c.i. big block for power backed by a Torqueflite transmission. A coil-over independent front suspension and ladder bar rear help get it low over 18- and 20-inch Boyd Coddington wheels, while the beautiful Moss Green Pearl Metallic paint is complemented by beige leather upholstery inside. 90 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Homebuilt Heaven (Sponsored by Speedway Motors) Randy Weaver and his wife Lynn spent five years of weekends building this ’61 Ford Ranch Wagon. It rides on an Art Morrison chassis with a 4.6-liter four-valve Cobra engine getting the Billet Specialties wheels rolling. The Starmist Blue and Colonial White color combo looks great!
G-Body Pick (Sponsored by Golden Star Classic Auto Parts)
Bryan Davison says his wife Dawn made him buy this ’87 Buick Grand National at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale six years ago. It’s a super-clean original still sporting the turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 but benefitting from QA1 suspension upgrades and American Racing wheels.
Ya Gotta Drive ‘Em (Sponsored by LeCarra Steering Wheels) Jason Benson’s ’71 Dodge D100 is a home-built beauty with a 5.7-liter Hemi for power, a RideTech four-link rear suspension, and big-inch American Racing wheels. Jason says he uses the Dark Ceramic Gray hauler for going “junkin’” on the weekends.
Meguiar’s Magnificent Masterpiece Ford Truck Pick (Sponsored by LMC Truck) Ashley Vega was all smiles cruising through the awards in her Grabber Blue ’73 Bronco updated with 18-inch wheels and a custom interior by Vega Designs. It’s got a 302c.i. small block for power. Hugger Orange paint, big Boze wheels, and a custom hood give Alga Gatson’s ’69 Camaro a bold appearance, which is backed up with power from an LS3 (dressed like a big block) under the hood. A six-speed transmission and FiTech EFI are just a couple of the Camaro’s other features.
The PPG Surf Green paint really pops on Josh Bailey’s exceptionally straight ’57 Chevy 210. It’s got a bitchin’ stance over 16- and 17-inch steel wheels and carries a big stick under hood in the form of a 427c.i. L88 big block. Josh and his father Joe built the car at home during four years of nights and weekends.

award winners Scott Jones has done all his own work on his ’66 Fairlane, which has a Vortech-supercharged 306c.i. small block under the hood, disc brakes, a coil-over suspension, and Billet Specialties wheels. Scott plans to hit the drag strip with it in the near future.

WIldcard Just ‘Cause It’s Neat The wild upholstery pattern in Mac Moss’ ’68 Chevy C10 earned it the Wildcard award. Mac is just 18 and had the opportunity to work with Goolsby Customs on this build, which incorporated a Roadster Shop chassis, Pace Performance LT4 engine, and Billet Specialties wheels.
Way Cool Award A great stance, Schott wheels, and striking silver-and-black paint are just a few things that make Donas Singleton’s ’56 Bel Air cool. It also has an Art Morrison chassis, 502c.i. big block with Borla stack injection, and paddle shifters in the well-appointed interior. 92 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Period Perfect The Merlot Pearl paint, wide whites, and low stance look beautiful on Rock Able’s ’41 Plymouth coupe. A Fatman front clip helps get it low, a 360c.i. small block Mopar gets it moving, and parchment-colored tuck ’n roll upholstery keeps the inside comfy.
Cool Camaro This ’69 Camaro was Jamie Martin’s first car. He’s owned it 35 years now and has it looking great with PPG Arctic White paint with silver striping, plus Rushforth wheels and a great stance courtesy of Hotchkis and Detroit Speed parts. Power comes from a 6-liter LS engine with FiTech EFI.
Hot Hauler Jonathan Day saw this ’68 C10 on a trailer and followed the guy home to inquire about buying the truck. A five-year build ensued and included an AccuAir air spring system, U.S. Mags wheels, BASF Golden Cashmere paint, and a custom bed floor by Jonathan’s wife, Roxy. It still has an inline 250c.i. six cylinder for power.
All American Sunday Award Mike Manley says he has the only 2002 Chrysler Prowler in Nashville. It’s a well-preserved, all-original example and a definite head-turner with Candy Metallic Red paint.
Suede & Chrome Best Wide Whites The wide whites and chrome wheels on Jessica Lile’s ’56 Chevy pickup complement the brilliant Chrysler Emerald green finish with flames. The just-right stance helps, too, and Jessica points out that she did the upholstery in the truck herself.
“It’s done” is what Jim Brandau says about his chopped black suede ’32 Ford three-window coupe. He’s owned the car a decade and enjoys the road-proven combination of small-block Chevy power, an easy-care finish, Mexican blanket interior, and Real Rodders wheels. So do we!
Quintin Rottering drove his chopped ’50 Merc more than 700 miles from Iowa to attend the Nashville event! The black cherry custom rides on a ’78 Buick Electra frame and has classic custom touches like frenched headlights, ’50 Lincoln taillights, rounded hood corners, and a ’53 Chevy grille with ’54 Chevy grille teeth.

award winners Charles Hargrove built his “Christine”-influenced ’58 Plymouth from parts of several cars. VZ Customs did the bodywork and applied the Spectra Red paint, while the interior was done in white vinyl with red pleated inserts. With a 440c.i. big block under the hood, this girl is plenty mean!
Coolest ‘50s
Wonderful Woodie Bill Daniels’ ’50 Olds “tin woodie” wagon uses a custom Art Morrison frame to get low over Schott 18- and 20-inch wheels and has a killer six-stack EFI system topping the stroker ’56 Olds V8 built by Ross Racing Engines. Interiors by Shannon stitched the leather upholstery to complement the beautiful black PPG paint.
Restored Award It’s not often we find a restored original ’55 Chevy at a Goodguys event. This beautiful 210 model belongs to Stephen Moses and has a 265c.i. V8 backed by an overdrive three-speed transmission. Can you believe the Gypsy Red paint is 20 years old! 94 y SEPTEMBER.2021
All American Truck Pick With a 5.4-liter supercharged engine under the hood, Charles Jennett’s ’99 Ford Lightning pickup was pretty hot from the factory. A 4- and 6-inch lowering over Centerline wheels makes this one even better looking, with a Magnaflow exhaust giving it just the right tone.
Long Distance Award Mike Momb cruised all the way from Sisseton, South Dakota to show off his beautiful ’50 Chevy pickup. He’s owned the truck since 1976 and has it looking and riding better than ever with a TCI front suspension, four-bar rear, air springs, 18-inch Wheelsmith wire wheels, and a small-block Chevy backed by a 700R4 transmission.

LOWRETTA Steve VanMorkhoven’s ’39 LaSalle Sets the Standard for Streamlined Custom Style WORDS: DAVE CRUIKSHANK PHOTOS: JOHN JACKSON
96 y SEPTEMBER.2021
A great custom car is a timeless custom car. Not only will it look good today, but it will also be just as cool 100 years from now. A casual viewer may not even be able to decipher all the massaging that went into a modified car – they just know is looks “right.” And because the result is so pretty, a list of the brushstrokes a maestro builder might have employed is probably irrelevant in the end. Like the Mona Lisa, savoring the masterpiece is all that matters. Steve VanMorkhoven’s sublime 1939 LaSalle 62 opera coupe could very well serve as a new benchmark for a timeless custom beauty. A styling powerhouse from GM’s Art and Color Section in the 1930s, it was stunning from the factory with pontoon fenders, streamlined
torpedo lighting, waterfall flourishes around the grille, and nary a straight line in sight. It was so good out of the box that a chopped top, the right stance, a set of Sombreros, and tweaked ’41 Lincoln Zephyr skirts were all it took to perfect Harley Earl’s original vision. Let’s go back to 2013 to trace the timeline of Steve’s LaSalle. He was at a friend’s house in Orcutt, California, attending a barbeque, when he spotted the coupe in the neighbor’s backyard. It was a stalled restoration with the front clip removed. He talked with the owner who said it was not for sale. Undeterred, Steve circled back three months later, struck a deal, and became the car’s fourth owner. Originally sporting green paint, it had the usual rot in the bottoms of the fenders and running boards. With the help of some talented craftsman friends, Steve snatched this forgotten Cadillac stablemate from the jaws of the crusher and willed it back to life.
GOOD-GUYS.COM y 97
LOWRETTA
The body was sent off to Townsend Customs where guru bodyman Matt Townsend chopped the top and rounded out the door openings at the B-pillar. Life got busy and the old LaSalle sat there for two years at the shop before work resumed. Look closely at the vent windows and the sliding rear-quarter panes; they were modified as well and function as original. All the glass was custom made by Carson at Street Rod Glass in Riverside. Meanwhile, the stock frame was sent out to Radford Customs where it was fitted with their proprietary Mustang II-style front end, a custom three-link rear suspension, and sprung on a tablet-controlled AccuAir ride system. The car has no power steering and rolls on late-model front discs and rear drums inside 15-inch Wheel Vintiques steel wheels. Steve brought home the newly rejuvenated chassis and promptly took it apart. He beefed up and braced the frame, then sent it out to Full Spectrum Powder Coating in Atascadero, where a fresh finish was applied to the chassis and running gear. Steve reassembled everything and then detailed it to better than new. The LaSalle is powered by a ’62-vintage 327c.i. Chevrolet V8 with Rochester 3x2 induction, a polished Edelbrock manifold, and a mild cam. The power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 700R4 overdrive transmission. The old coupe quietly exhales out of a mild exhaust system, as Steve thought it was befitting of the LaSalle’s luxury roots. After all, LaSalle was manufactured by Cadillac and was the second most prestigious marque in GM’s hierarchy. The body was brought back from Townsend’s in 2019 and Steve 98 y SEPTEMBER.2021
got to work gapping the panels and massaging the smallest of exterior details to razor-sharp perfection. When it was exactly right, he sprayed the body in a combo of Sikkens coppery brown and House of Kolor metallic root beer. He then bolted the engine to the chassis and dropped the body on sans the front clip. More finessing occurred when Steve remarried the Fisher body to its front fenders and grille. Menges Twin Speedshop built custom running boards, designed by Steve, as a finishing touch. All the exterior stainless and jewelry was straightened and polished and then added to the mix. The interior was a shambles when Steve bought the car. He had to source many parts, including several dash components. He wanted a period-appropriate interior, so he began to hunt down assets. He knew the owner of Leo’s Upholstery in Santa Maria, who had recently passed away, but his inventory had been bought up by Quality Fabrics in San Luis Obispo. From there, he picked a bolt of authentic 1939 material that while not exact to the car, was a perfect complement and hit the bullseye aesthetically. Rick Simmons Upholstery in Nipomo stitched the headliner, seats, and door panels. The woodgrain dash and interior trim surrounds were handled by Custom Woodgrain, while Steering Wheel Kris refinished the tiller and the shifter knob. Steve worked relentlessly to debut the car at the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show and took third place in the Custom class at the event. Since then, Steve and his family have relocated to Arkansas and decided to take in the Goodguys BASF Nashville Nationals this year. Our team was immediately drawn to the Art Deco lines and awarded it the Gazette Feature Pick. A bittersweet epilogue followed the GNRS unveiling. Steve’s mother Loretta, born the same year as the LaSalle, passed away after a bout with cancer. She was able to attend GNRS, however, and witnessed the car unveiled for the first time. In honor of his mom, Steve christened the LaSalle “Lowretta.” Now, not only does her memory sparkle every time the sun hits the curvy sheet metal, but the Detroit artisans and engineers who built the car live on as well. CRUISIN’ TEXAS IN JUNE AT THE INAUGURAL MEGUIAR’S ALL-STAR GET-TOGETHER Goodguys returned to Fort Worth in June to bring a second dose of hot rodding fun to the Lone Star State for 2021. This time it was three days of all-American automotive action with the first-ever Meguiar’s AllStar Get-Together, an all-new event that combined the expanded features of a Goodguys National happening with the inclusion of all years of American-made and American-powered vehicles. It proved to be a perfect combination for a three-day weekend of early-summer fun in Texas! The event served as a kickoff to Texas Motor Speedway’s 10 Days of Speed – a week of auto-related events leading up to the NASCAR All-Star
Race the following weekend at TMS. Enthusiasts in this area are always ready for some high-octane fun and showed their spirit by showing up in force on Friday, filling the TMS infield with all kinds of great iron – from vintage street rods, to late-model trucks and muscle machines. It was an ideal Friday for taking the day off of work and coming to hang out with all your car and truck friends! Even better was the epic TGIF party hosted at Murray Kustom Rods on Friday night! Heath Murray and his crew pulled out all the stops for this fun-filled bash, bringing veteran blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and

his band in to play a show, offering shop tours, and hosting a lineup of food trucks for some tasty grub. Add in a couple hundred cool rods and customs, and it was a perfect Friday night hot rod bash, Texas style! The Texas skies threw us a few curveballs on Saturday, but those who braved the morning showers were rewarded with an afternoon of cool-cruisin’ good times. The Goodguys team took it upon themselves to select the weekend’s Top 10, a lineup we think would make any of our regular Builder’s Choice selectors proud. We also made some Of The Year selections, which included Larry Roebuck’s ’72 Olds 442 earning a Billet Specialties Muscle Car of the Year finalist pick, Hammer Fab claiming the GM Iron Award for Chevrolet Performance Builder of the Year with their ’66 GMC, and Riggs Fabrication earning the GM Retro Iron nod for Chevrolet Performance Builder of the Year with a Nailhead-powered Model A pickup. Other noteworthy winners included Vance Cryer’s ’46 Ford getting the Goodguys Feature Pick and Bob Ward’s ’90 Chevy CK 454SS pickup driving off with the Fuel Curve Pick. The weekend excitement spilled onto the Goodguys CPP AutoCross 104 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
track, where a great selection of late-model machines took full advantage of being able to run all three days alongside the vintage iron. Mike Alstrom doubled-up in the PRO-X class with the overall quickest class time as well as winning the American AutoCross Shootout sponsored by Speedway Motors. Bill Graves Sr. did the same in the Forgeline Street Machine class, as did Rob MacGregor in the LMC Truck category. Jared Cash also found the winners circle with the quickest time in the FiTech Fuel Injection Challenger class, while Marty Clarke’s Tesla dominated the Wilwood Disc Brakes All American Sunday class, winning both the class and the eight-car Sunday Shootout. If anyone forgot that Texas is truck country, the Ultimate Truck Marketplace was sure to set them straight. Goodguys worked with Total Truck Centers to bring a full array of truck-focused vendors and product displays to the TMS cup garage. If you had even the slightest interest in finding the

If all of that wasn’t enough, we had all the attractions of a regular Goodguys National event weekend in Texas. There was a huge swap meet, multiple hits of Nitro Thunderfest dragsters firing off, rides around the high-banked TMS oval with Team Texas, a great selection of vendor displays, plus the laidback enjoyment of checking out a massive selection of cool rides and catching up with old friends. It might have been a first-time event, but the Meguiar’s All-Star Get-Together sure felt like a familiar Goodguys favorite to hot rod fans in Texas! Story ending symbol

The Goodguys team stepped up and made the Builder’s Choice Top 10 selection for the first-ever Meguiar’s All Star Get-Together. There’s never a shortage of quality rides in Texas and we had a great crop of candidates from which to select. The final lineup covered a good cross-section of vehicles, from early hot rods to ’50s and ’60s cruisers, plus plenty of trucks. We think this Top 10 would make any of our regular Builder’s Choice selectors proud – what do you say? Story ending symbol

Dan Shea not only nabbed a Builder’s Choice award with his ’29 Model A pickup, but the truck also earned a Chevrolet Retro Iron Builder of the Year finalist nod for builder Riggs Fabrication. The ’60s-flavored pickup rides on a custom chassis with a 401c.i. Buick Nailhead fed by a quartet of Stromberg 97 carbs. Finished with brilliant PPG Pagan Gold paint and lots of white tuck ’n roll upholstery by Sewdupokie Interiors, it’s a definite head-turner. Rob and Lisa Bennett’s ’54 Chevy pickup has a lot of cool and subtle tricks, from the frenched headlights and modified bumpers, to the modified bed rails and tailgate, to the custom bumpers and special-blend PPG paint. It rides low on a Heidts IFS and RideTech air springs, with 15- and 16-inch Wheel Vintiques wheels wrapped in wide whites and backed by Wilwood disc brakes. The small-block Chevy under the hood is topped with a Weiand blower and the interior is filled with similar custom touches. The classic lines of Chris Collins’ ’69 Mustang look great complemented by the fantastic bodywork and beautiful green paint by Cimtex Rods. Even cooler is the rumble of modern Coyote power under the hood, plus the benefit of Detroit Speed suspension improvements and polished Budnik wheels backed by Baer brakes. Finished off with custom upholstery by Gabe’s inside, plus air conditioning and Classic Instruments, this updated pony is ready to run!

Levi Green and his team at Hammer Fab are metalworking masters who have been turning out some exceptionally cool rides lately. The latest is this ’66 GMC that pairs a wellweathered exterior with top-quality underpinnings like a Choppin’ Block frame and a beautifully detailed Don Hardy LS3 cranking out 660hp. Finished with Ferrada wheels and a welldetailed interior, there’s a lot more to this one than initially meets the eye. Check out more details on page 124.

We showcased George Jezek’s five-window Deuce coupe in the June Gazette. It’s a tasty Texas hot rod that’s also ownerbuilt, featuring a Pete & Jake’s chassis, 383c.i. stroker small block fed by triple Holley carbs, and 16-inch So-Cal knock-off wheels. The unchopped coupe body has a variety of subtle mods and refinements under the deep, black BASF paint, while custom brown leather upholstery by Gabriel & Son and Classic Instruments gauges highlight the inside.

Ricky Morgan’s swoopy ’53 Studebaker made a strong impression on us at the Spring Lone Star Nationals and we loved seeing the bright yellow custom rod in the June Texas sun! Subtle body mods like frenched lights and angled B-pillars combine with updated underpinnings like a Fatman front clip, LS1 power, and Billet Specialties wheels to make a clean, highimpact cruiser. We especially like the red leather upholstery inside!

Dig that beautiful copper color on Aaron Weaver’s ’54 Chevy pickup. Built by Loaded Dice Speed Shop, this trick truck uses a Roadster Shop chassis to get down low over Mob Steel wheels and an LS3 engine to get moving. Beyond the shaved trim and custom bumpers, there are ’54 Chevy Bel Air taillights integrated in the rear fenders, plus a dash from the same car leading the way in the custom cabin. The truck has been picking up awards at many shows this season!

TGIF PARTY
FRIDAY NIGHT FUN “Every Friday night should be like this.” That’s what Goodguys regular Alan Pound had to say about the monumental TGIF Party held at Murray Kustom Rods in Fort Worth. Shop owner Heath Murray coordinated a fantastic Friday night bash and brought in legendary blues guitarist (and custom car owner) Jimmie Vaughan for some headlining entertainment. There were food trucks serving up tasty grub, shop tours to check out some of the cool builds in progress, and hundreds of fine rides gathered outside creating an incredible show of their own. It all added up to a picture-perfect hot-rodflavored Friday night with good friends, great music, cool cars, and fun times.

THUNDERFEST What’s a Texas party without some noise? We were thrilled to welcome three vintage Hemi-powered front-engine dragsters to fire up and shake the ground several times throughout the weekend. There’s nothing quite like the smell of burning nitro and the feel of all that horsepower rumbling through the pavement and reverberating in your body. The experience is a trip back in time to the Glory Days of drag racing and brought a full dose of quartermile excitement to the spectators who gathered to watch.

MUSCLE CAR OF THE YEAR LARRY ROEBUCK • MESQUITE, TX
1972 OLDSMOBILE 442 WORDS AND PHOTOS: TODD RYDEN
When Larry Roebuck was getting ready to retire from his career as an accountant, he started looking for a project to keep him busy. He had a ’56 Chevy before and felt that restoring another car would be good use of his time. As he started surfing the web for a new project, his wife Jeanne mentioned that a convertible would be nice to have. Being married for nearly 50 years at the time, Larry understood that it would definitely be in his best interest to find a drop-top project and it wasn’t long before his search led to this ’72 442 convertible. The car was being sold by the grandson of the of the first owner and he supplied all of the original paperwork including the sales documentation and even a thank you letter from GM to his grandmother! All of the original parts were in place along with a 455c.i. V8 under the hood backed by an automatic M40 Turbo trans. In 1972, the 442 package was back to being a checkmark on the option list, compared to the three previous years where the 442 stood as its own model. The 442 option included boxed lower control arms in the rear, heavy-duty springs, shocks and sway bars, and 14x7-inch wheels. Strato bucket seats were included, though the center console was an option and it’s interesting 116 y SEPTEMBER.2021
to note that the convertibles featured a woodgrain treatment to the dash surrounds and trim. Larry’s car features the Custom Sport steering wheel, console and note the optional tic-toc-tach. It was a running, driving car, but as with anything over 50 years old, it was time for a complete overhaul and facelift. Once Larry and his son Steven dug into the body, they discovered a little more rust than they thought, but persisted through the bodywork with the help of a number of friends, including a pal that laid down a fresh coat of the original Matador Red hue and white sport stripes using Sherwin-Williams paint. The 455 was removed and rebuilt and the interior required a complete overhaul as well. Along the way there were some modern updates hidden in the process, such as the use of 134-refrigerant, a 700R4 trans to drop the cruising rpm, and LED taillight assemblies in the name of safety.
Since finishing the Olds, Larry and Jeanne have been averaging about 2,000 miles a year in the drop-top, with trips all over Texas, which is exactly what his retirement plans called for! Story ending symbol

ALL-STARACTION The Goodguys CPP AutoCross Series Makes its Second Lone Star Appearance for the Season The Goodguys CPP AutoCross Series returned to Fort Worth in early June for the second of three 2021 events at Texas Motor Speedway, bringing three days of action from a great lineup of cars and trucks. With all years of American-made and American-powered vehicles eligible throughout the weekend, there was a lot of variety in the pits and on the track, from vintage street rods to late-model trucks and muscle machines. It made for a great mix of both class racing and shootout action during the American AutoCross Shootout sponsored by Speedway Motors. We’ve come to expect intense action on the track in Texas and that’s just what we got. Mike Ahlstrom is always competitive in the PRO-X class in his ’65 Volkswagen dune buggy and secured the class win racing against Gary Hart’s Factory Five Cobra. The two met up again in the final round of the American AutoCross Shootout, where Ahlstrom’s 37.213 topped Hart’s 40.519 and allowed Ahlstrom to claim the double-up victory. Bill Graves Sr. has yet to miss an event this seaWITH ALL YEARS OF AMERICANson and found success in the Forgeline Street MADE AND AMERICAN-POWERED Machine class, taking the VEHICLES ELIGIBLE THROUGHOUT class win before meeting up with Tim Molzen, Ken THE WEEKEND, THERE WAS A LOT Kelly, and Bruce Jarrett in OF VARIETY IN THE PITS AND ON the shootout. Graves clocked a 37.118, securing the double-up victory for Graves and furthering his lead in the season points standings. The LMC Truck class always gets its share of contenders in Texas. Rob MacGregor frequently finds his way to the top and did so again driving Bill Holt’s ’86 Chevy C10 to the class win with a best time of 37.470. He was joined by fellow LMC Truck class racer Jim Fields in the Truck/Challenger ladder of the American AutoCross Shootout, along with FiTech Challenger class winner Jared Cash and Stan Martin, also from the Challenger class. MacGregor and Cash made it past the first round to meet in the final. Cash ran a strong 41.615 in his ’64 Corvette in the final round, but it was not enough to match the 37.815 of MacGregor’s pickup, which allowed MacGregor to take the double-up win. Since this was a points event, the late-model vehicles raced together throughout the weekend in the Wilwood All American class. For the second time this season, a Tesla took the class win. Marty Clark led the pack and claimed the overall class victory in his 2021 Tesla with the fastest time at 36.252 – which also was the fastest time of the entire weekend across all classes. That win allowed Clark to enter the eight-car All American Shootout in the number one qualifying spot and he worked his way through three rounds to double up and claim the shootout victory as well. Even with sporadic rain showers on Friday and Saturday, the Goodguys CPP AutoCross Series racers were tenacious through the weekend and stuck it out. Thanks to all the competitors and to the dedication of the track staff for making it a competitive, fun-filled weekend!

GM IRON BUILDER OF THE YEAR F I N A L I S T
HAMMERFAB • LIBERTY HILL, TEXAS LEVI GREEN’S
WORDS: DAMON LEE
1966 GMC C10 PHOTOS: STEVEN BUNKER AND TODD RYDEN
We’ve all heard advice about making lemonade when life gives you lemons. Levi Green and his team at HammerFab decided to heed that advice and make the most of 2020 – a.k.a. the “here’s some lemons” year – by building this bitchin’ ’66 GMC. Levi says he considered it “an alternative way to advance HammerFab during uncertain times.” The truck started as a ¾-ton long bed with just the right amount of weathering. “I appreciate the beauty of patina,” Levi says. “My goal was to build a high-end patina truck that appeals to people who love patina, but hate the undesirable characteristics such as rot, chalky paint, ugly engine bays, poor suspension, etc.” To that end, the team employed a new Choppin’ Block Extreme Air Ride chassis outfitted with a GearFX center section in the 9-inch rear124 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
end, big Baer six-piston brakes, and Ferrada 20- and 22-inch wheels. They complemented that with some extreme power – a 660hp Don Hardy-built LS3 detailed like a classic small block with orange paint, an old-school air cleaner atop the Holley EFI unit, a Billet Specialties Tru Trac accessory drive, and GMC V6 valve covers dressed in a plaid finish. It’s backed by a Bowler-prepped 4L80E and surrounded by a custom firewall and inner fenders crafted by the HammerFab crew. HammerFab hosts regular metalworking seminars and used one of them to shorten the truck’s bed with no visible scars (a video will soon be up on YouTube). Similar tricks were used in converting the small back window to a big window using a conversion panel from Classic Parts of America. The custom bed floor was
designed in SolidWorks, with parts laser cut and CNC bent by Topper Industrial. All body rust and damage was repaired without using filler and finished with faux patina to match the pickup’s natural weathering before being topped in satin clear epoxy from Squeeg’s Kustoms. The team went all out inside, building a custom roll cage, under-dash panels, bezels, and other small parts. Vastine’s Paint Garage applied fresh fawn-colored paint, while Jay Schluter upholstered the modified bench seat using Relicate distressed leather. The Ididit tilt column looks right at home, as do the Dakota Digital RTX gauges in a bezel from Arizona Pro Performance. Wires by Myers connected everything using an American Autowire harness. Finished just in time for the Goodguys event, the truck turned plenty of heads – and even carved a few corners on the AutoCross track. It’s the embodiment of the notion that “it’s all in the details,” and proof of how cool those details look when you put them all together.
SWAP
MEET Swap, buy, or sell – if you had parts to get rid of or were looking for something to buy, the swap meet at the All Star Get Together had plenty to offer! It’s fun to go treasure hunting and there’s never a shortage of cool finds being unearthed in Texas!
Tony Kondrotis earned the Billet Specialties Muscle Car of the Year finalist nod with his ’69 Mustang at the Spring Lone Star Nationals. In June, he opted to bring out his 2012 Corvette ZR1, a bitchin’ black beauty with just the right amount of red accent.
A nice lowered stance, cool wheels, and cowl induction hood are a few of the elements improving the cool factor of Don Silaff’s ’66 Nova. It’s got a 350/700R4 combo for power. GOOD-GUYS.COM y 125

BURNOUT
COMPETITION
Let’s make some smoke! Ronnie Newton did an epic burnout in his bright yellow LS-powered ’57 Chevy to win the Burnout Competition. “I was banging it off the rev limiter the whole time, and still drove it home,” Ronnie says. Ronnie’s father, David Gibson, put on a strong smoke show of his own in his small-block-powered ’47 Studebaker pickup, complete with a vintage cruiser bike in the bed!
An LS3 engine backed by a Tremec fivespeed gets makes Daniel Hanisko’s ’73 Z28 a true silver bullet. Wilwood disc brakes help bring it down from speed.
Rodney Carter’s ’71 Dodge D100 is a regular at our Texas events and always looks good thanks to a dropped front axle, Halibrand wheels, and wide whites. It’s still got a slant six for power, backed by a Torqueflite automatic transmission. 126 y SEPTEMBER.2021
Tim Perry’s ’31 Model A sedan garnered plenty of attention with a chopped top, channeled body, zoomie headers, and a blower and shotgun-style scoop atop the 383c.i. smallblock Chevy.

GM RETRO IRON BUILDER OF THE YEAR F I N A L I S T
RIGGS FABRICATION • JUSTIN, TEXAS DAN SHEA’S
1929 MODEL A
WORDS: DAMON LEE PHOTOS: STEVEN BUNKER
When a custom car or truck owner has a specific concept for their ride, it’s important to find a builder who shares that vision. That’s what Dan Shea found when he connected with Jay Riggs at Riggs Fabrication on this retro-style ’29 Model A pickup. Dan had the vision for a ’60s-flavored rod and did some of the work on the truck but gives credit to Riggs for “the majority of bringing it to fruition.” The truck started life as a Model AA 1.5-ton flatbed, which has the same cab as the smaller Model A, but a larger and heavier frame and different fenders. That frame was ultimately kicked up 3-inches in the front and 8-inches in the rear for the desired stance, then fitted with a Speedway Motors 4-inch dropped front axle and a RideTech 130 \ SEPTEMBER.2021
triangulated four-link to locate the 9-inch rearend. It got rolling on 15x6- and 15x8-inch Cragar Supreme wheels wrapped in Coker wide whitewalls. The 401c.i. Buick Nailhead was central to the ’60s theme. Built by Republic Custom Engine, the well-dressed mill has a Martin intake topped with a quartet of Stromberg carbs and breathes out through Sanderson Lakester headers. A contemporary 4L60E transmission makes for highway-friendly rpms. A starting point for the body was raising the bed so the top rail was in line with the beltline on the door. The Riggs Fabrication team also sectioned the splash aprons, cut down a ’32 Ford grille shell to fit, built custom running boards, lou-
vered the visor, widened the rear fenders, recessed the license plate in the tailgate, and installed ’54 Chevy taillights. They saved the best for last, though, covering all the custom metalwork with a brilliant House of Kolor finish that included Pagan Gold Candy over Ice Pearl and metalflake. It’s a truly stunning color. An abundance of white marine tuck ’n roll vinyl stitched by Tim Rein and Sewdupokie complements the gleaming gold finish, covering the running boards, the medical seats inside, and the door panels. A ’32 Ford dash incorporates a custom switch panel, while Classic Instruments are positioned in a custom overhead panel. A gold metalflake steering wheel makes for a perfect finishing touch. Dan says work was done in four phases over seven-plus years, which included a couple years of driving the pickup in primer. Finished earlier this year, the pickup captures that ’60s show rod vibe he was after, from the four-carb Nailhead to the custom bedside tailpipes with fishtail tips. It’s a great example of owner and builder seeing a shared vision through to completion.

TEAM TEXAS It’s easy to feel the need for speed when you’re at a NASCAR track like Texas Motor Speedway. Thankfully, Team Texas was on hand to help satisfy that urge, offering showgoers rides around the TMS oval in NASCAR-spec racecars with professional drivers at the wheel. There’s nothing quite like speeding through a high-banked corner and blasting down the straightaway just inches from the wall. What an experience!

O.J.
PICK
THE ONE-OF-ONE 454 CHEVY CONCEPT PICKUP THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN WORDS AND PHOTOS: STEVEN BUNKER
In the rapidly evolving world of classic trucks, vehicle owners and builders are doing what they can to add a new twist to classic rides. Case in point is this concept 454 SS pickup from the “crüe” at Hill’s Hot Rods. Jason Hill was at the forefront of the custom squarebody wave, so it is no surprise to see him and his team rolling out jaw-dropping OBS Chevy pickups like “O.J.” (as they call it) seen here. Before getting too deep, let’s go back to 1990 for a refresher on how these 454 SS trucks came to be, and what set them apart from the rest of the C/K 1500 pickups. Between 1990-93 Chevrolet offered a C1500 edition pickup (the 454 SS trucks were never identified as their own model) with a 454c.i. big block engine producing 255hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Supporting the extra power were gas-filled Bilstein shocks, a front sway bar, quicker ratio steering box, and aesthetic upgrades on the exterior as well as inside the cab. The downside? In 1990 and 1991 they were only offered in Onyx Black paint. For 1992 and 1993, Summit White and Victory Red paint colors were added to the mix. But why not Hugger Orange? That question floated around Hill’s Hot Rods and was quickly addressed. The Hugger Orange color was released in 1969 with the iconic ’69 Camaro to help push sales and set it apart from the Ford Mustang. To go one step further, Hugger Orange got its name from Chevy’s ad campaign when they called the first-generation Camaro “The Hugger” for its wide, low stance and performance handling as it “hugged” the road. So, once again, when Chevrolet released a performance pickup with increased handling capabilities, why not offer it in Hugger Orange? Therein lies the premise for O.J. – the one-of-one 454 SS pickup that Hill’s Hot Rod debuted earlier this year. This truck is more than just a paint job. They started with an original 1990 Onyx Black 454 SS pickup and brought it up to modern-day standards by equipping the stock frame with a McGaughys 2/4 lowering kit using drop spindles and springs up front, and a flip kit out back. They then added the 20x8.5- and 20x10134 y SEPTEMBER.2021
inch Raceline wheels wrapped with Nitto tires. Before Jason Hill laid down the orange paint, the Hill’s Hot Rods crew shaved, smoothed and tucked the bumpers as well as shaved the cargo light and added sport side-view mirrors. The tan bucket seats and interior came from a survivor donor truck and the A/C vents were painted tan to match the dash. New parts came in the form of Dakota Digital gauges, a Forever Sharp steering wheel, a RetroSound bluetooth radio playing through Kicker speakers and subs, and Clayton Machine Works pedals. It wouldn’t be a 454 SS without a big block 454ci Chevy engine. But like everything else, the engine also couldn’t be left original. It was pulled and rebuilt using an Edelbrock intake, Billet Specialties valve covers, an HEI ignition, Hooker headers, Flowmaster exhaust, electric water pump and cooling fans, and a CVF Racing serpentine drive. The engine bay was also treated to custom sheet metal panels that were finished in flat orange paint, as was the firewall. We’ve seen our fair share of “what if” builds, but not very many of them make you truly question why the idea didn’t come to fruition from the factory. The Hill’s Hot Rods team did something that Chevrolet should have done 30-plus years ago. Story ending symbol

WEEKEND
VENDORS
Event sponsor Meguiar’s had a team on hand offering advice and demonstrations on the best ways to care for your paint and keep it protected and shining like new.
The LMC Truck crew was on hand to help the Texas show-goers out with their pickup needs. From restoration parts and upgrade components for vintage rides, to pieces for later-model haulers, the company has parts to repair and improve the full spectrum of domestic trucks.
Goodguys worked with Total Truck Centers on the Ultimate Truck Marketplace, which brought a full array of truckfocused vendors and product displays to the TMS cup garage. These rodders were getting a little more info on Westin winches and accessories when we stopped through the garage. We can always count on some eye candy in the Hill’s Hot Rods booth – typically a good selection of Chevy trucks. Jason Hill and his crew didn’t disappoint us, with this sharp squarebody Silverado leading a lineup of fine rides.
Affordable Street Rods always has a great selection of parts, apparel, memorabilia, and accessories on hand, which is why many enthusiasts bring their shopping list to the event and save a little extra space in the trunk to haul new goodies home.
The vendor area included the Ultimate Truck Marketplace focused on pickup parts and accessories, like the full line of winches from Warn. You never know when you’ll need a little help getting pulled from a sticky situation – or pulling that next project truck out from its resting place! 136 y SEPTEMBER.2021
There’s no question that Texas gets a little hot and sticky in the summer, which is why the Old Air Products booth stayed busy all weekend long showing enthusiasts the multiple options available for air conditioning in their hot rods and vintage trucks.

Ty Genteman has LS2 power under the hood of his beautiful black ’70 C10, which uses CPP suspension goodies to get down low over Billet Specialties wheels and is upgraded inside with custom maroon leather upholstery, Dakota Digital gauges, and Vintage Air.
As if the House of Kolor orange paint on Mike Tabb’s ’59 Apache isn’t hot enough, it’s also topped with flames! A Scott’s Hotrods front suspension helps it ride low over Billet Specialties wheels and there’s an LS3 under the hood for power.
Black on blue is a toughlooking combination on Tom Howard’s ’68 Corvette, which backs up that appearance with a Coffman performance chassis, supercharged LT4 power and a six speed, along with widened flares to cover the Forgeline wheels.
