TELLS HOW HELPING YOUNG MUSICIANS BECOME CLASSICAL STARS FILLS HER WITH JOIE DE VIVRE

‘The views are amazing, especially at night, when you can see the Tour Eiffel and the boats on the Seine’

Leona greets us from her magnificent home in central Paris (above left), which features an impressive entrance hall (left) and incredible views out to the Eiffel Tower (far left)

A grand fireplace dominates the main room (right), which is decorated in an explosion of colour thanks to the work of Parisian architect FrançoisJoseph Graf, who mixes and matches style and shades. Mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries add to the sense of space (below, left and right)

‘It’s classical in style and the apartment is typically Parisian. I bought it just as it was, furniture and all, because it was perfect’

t was hearing her young daughter’s music that Iswapping inspired Leona König to change her life, her social whirl for a stunning solo act as

apartment is typically Parisian. I bought it just as it was, furniture and all, because it was perfect. The only room we redecorated was the bedroom. “The interior is the work of François-Joseph Graf, who’s designed prestigious hotels and restaurants throughout France. He mixes colours and patterns you’d never think of putting together, as with the wallpaper, curtains and leopard-print carpet in the library. It works marvellously.” Some of the decor is original 18th century, isn’t it? “There are leather-lined walls dating from then, as well as furniture. And there’s a beautiful collection of mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries that create an intimate, welcoming ambience.” The views are amazing… “Yes, especially at night, when you can see the Tour Eiffel and the boats on the Seine. That’s

a philanthropist. She was watching her little daughter Jana playing the piano and giving concerts when she realised she wanted similarly talented children to have the chance to shine. So, putting her training as an economist to good use, five years ago she founded her very own IMF, or International Music Foundation, devoted to helping gifted youngsters from any background become top classical performers. Coming from Austria – and having been married to Austrian tycoon Peter König – Leona knew Vienna was a classical music paradise and the perfect spot for her venture. It’s there she holds the annual Golden Note

prize gala, which showcases her protégés’ skills by letting them perform alongside great musicians. The annual TV show Golden Note by Leona König and her TV show Stars and Talents, which follows the same winning formula, last year scooped her an Austrian of the Year cultural award. Determined, intelligent and refined, Leona never misses a beat as she pursues her philanthropic aims. While she is based in Austria, she has a beautiful home in Paris, too. As she shows us around her magnificent apartment in the French capital, just a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower, she tells us how helping others has brought harmony to her own life… Tell us about your home, Leona… “The building dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. It’s classical in style and the

pregnancy. My daughter had her first trip to the opera when she was just six, to see Carmen, and she adored it. “She started piano lessons when she was three and a half. We’d given her a piano for Christmas and she used to play it for her dolls. Soon she started to take part in concerts and competitions. “Thanks to her passion for music, I realised I wanted to do something for other children. I knew there are lots who have talent, but don’t have the support they need. So I came up with the idea for the foundation. I wanted other kids to have what Jana and I had together, to give them the benefit of my experience. “I realised that for me, life is about more than my social calendar; that it’s more important to help those in need and to share your interests and passions.” So you set up the IMF, or International Music Foundation for Highly Gifted Children… “Yes, I launched it in April 2016, from headquarters in Vienna. Its aim is to help children aged five to 18 to develop their talent and to make classical music more accessible, especially for the young. The kids are

s

guaranteed to make you happy. For me, Paris is romantic and fascinating, while Vienna is the city of music. In Vienna, with my ex-husband, I had a very intense social life, but these days when I’m there I devote myself to the children. It turned out it was my destiny to do something for others.” What can you tell us about your background? “I grew up in a family where half my relatives were talented musicians, playing in orchestras, and the other half were economists. I planned to become a doctor of economics, keeping music as a hobby. I used to play with my uncle and my grandfather. “I was never the typical model student, staying indoors studying, but more the sporty type. I attended secondary school in the Czech Republic and decided afterwards to go to university in Prague, studying economics with languages. “After completing my degree, I met my now ex-husband and decided to devote myself to him and to our daughter. We spent our time between Monaco, Vienna, Prague and Paris. The marriage didn’t work out though.” How did becoming a mother affect you? “I wanted to share with my child my love of classical music and I listened to it throughout my

selected through auditions with judges from prestigious music organisations, and those who reach the finals of the Golden Note awards receive both financial support and masterclasses with professionals, in customised programmes designed to suit their individual needs.” What has the experience taught you? “I’ve learnt what you can achieve with work. I never thought I’d be able to set up something as important as Golden Note. It was like a dream come true. Then, two years ago, I had the idea of bringing together young musicians and big stars and that proved a key moment for the foundation. Now, I’ve got a national Austrian TV channel on board.” TV must have seemed like a natural step… “Yes. I thought: ‘Why don’t we follow the little musicians throughout the whole year?’ So since December 2020, the foundation has been involved in a monthly show called Stars and Talents, which features the winners of Golden Note alongside an international performer.” Do you have any more challenges lined up? “The foundation’s aim is to motivate and inspire the children in their musical career. Thanks to the support of the stars, they get lots of visibility. But the goal is not just to give

them a boost, it’s to support them long-term, including financially. “We need to keep working hard to establish the scheme and to reach more countries, like Germany and Switzerland, by streaming the show. That’s my next goal. And my great dream is to create a children’s orchestra. If we believe in it and keep working, it can become reality.” Do you have any life lessons to share? “You must be open to trying different things. You can’t just focus on one, you need to see the full range of possibilities because that way, you may discover something that makes you truly happy, as I did. “You must believe in yourself, put in the effort and be strong. Although her original vow was for 12 months, she is still going strong and it has led to “a complete shift in mindset”, she says. “I’ve always loved dressing up and used to use all the fast-fashion brands, because it’s so easy

Katya burns up the dancefloor with her fashion after setting it alight with ex-husband Neil Jones (left) and Olympic boxer Nicola Adams (above left), with whom she made Strictly Come Dancing history and reusing, which is something I don’t think a lot of people realise. For example, you might see me wear a dress in week one and, in the final, the skirt from it will have been transformed and teamed with the top of another dress you’ve seen on another dancer. The ways they find to repurpose is absolutely unreal. They’re brilliant.” Her commitment now goes beyond clothes. “Once I tapped into sustainability with fashion, I discovered possibilities in other areas. We are mindful about our use of single-use plastic and carrying our own water bottles and coffee cups –

that’s almost normal now. Leaving the house, I always have my water bottle, coffee cup, grocery bags – and I carry a cutlery set. I know everybody is trying to be better about it. It’s about spreading awareness on the changes that can be made.” With anticipation about this year’s series ramping up, Katya remembers all too well the devastation she felt last year when, three weeks after making history by partnering Olympic boxer Nicola Adams to become the show’s first same-sex couple, she had to leave the contest following a positive Covid test.

“It was such a privilege to be bringing fans this small slice of consistency at such an uncertain time in the world and also, with Nicola and I being the first same-sex couple, it was very upsetting to have to leave when we did,” she says. “But we made our mark and Nicola definitely delivered the message she wanted to deliver – and we are always going to be the first.” Rumours are growing that this year, the hit BBC show will see dancer Graziano Di Prima in the first all-male pairing – but if Katya has heard anything, she is keeping quiet.

THE TOAST OF THE NATION

OUR SPORTING HEROES

They are Britain’s new stars, who have put their hearts and souls into winning gold, silver and bronze medals for Team GB at this year’s Olympic Games. Following a gruelling two weeks that saw some impressive performances in searing heat, our Olympians proved they were, once again, among the best in the world, racing up the medal table and into the nation’s hearts. From gymnast Max Whitlock successfully defending his title to diver Tom Daley knitting woolly creations at the side of the swimming pool, we take a look at some of the highlights of Tokyo

MAX WHITLOCK In a moment that no doubt matched stepping on top of the Olympic winners’ podium, 28-yearold Max Whitlock received a fitting welcome when he arrived back at Heathrow with his gold medal around his neck. Not only was wife Leah waiting to proudly greet him, their two-year-old daughter Willow delightedly ran into his arms (all below right). “What an amazing surprise,” he said. “My family kept it a secret so I didn’t think they were meeting me at the airport.” Max defended his title in the men’s pommel horse, taking his total Olympic medal tally to six – three gold and three bronze – making him Britain’s most successful gymnast in history.

34

HANNAH MILLS, EILIDH McINTYRE, GILES SCOTT, DYLAN FLETCHER AND STUART BITHELL Our sailors enjoyed a very successful Games, with Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre winning the women’s 470 gold (below far right), Giles Scott triumphing in the men’s Finn class (below right) and Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell snatching victory in the men’s 49er by mere inches. After their win, Hannah, 33, is now the most successful female sailor in Olympic history, while 27-year-old Eilidh’s medal follows that of her father, Mike, who won star keelboat gold at the Seou Olympics in 1988. Welsh-born Hannah said afterwards: “We put everything we are into this and it’s a massive relief. There have been so many incredible female sailors, so to be up there doesn’t feel real.” Meanwhile, 34-year-old Giles had to recover from a mistake to take gold in dramatic fashion, while former child actor Dylan, 33, and his partner Stuart, 34, triumphed over Germany in a thrilling battle to the finish.

JASON AND LAURA KENNY After already winning fans with her of the Games. “It’s unbelievable. I’m just sunny personality from the 2012 London so glad,” she said. “I’ve never wanted to Olympics onwards, Laura Kenny win a race so badly in my life. It was cemented her hero status last week giving me fears like never before. But we when she claimed victory in the went and did it.” inaugural women’s madison race Meanwhile, her husband Jason, 33, (below, with team-mate Katie Archibald). claimed a silver in the team sprint final, The 29-year-old cyclist became the making him the most decorated British first British woman to win gold at three Olympian of all time with eight medals consecutive Olympics and is the most (below left sharing medal joy with Laura successful female cyclist in the history after her silver in the team pursuit).

35

CHARLOTTE WORTHINGTON With a hugely impressive 360-degree backflip, Charlotte Worthington landed gold in the BMX freestyle finals – one of four medals taken home by Team GB in the events. The 25-year-old cyclist from Chorlton, Manchester, became the first woman to execute the move during the Games and obliterated her rivals to stand triumphant with her winner’s prize (below). “ I t h i n k i t ’s b e e n g o l d medal or nothing this whole journey,” she said. “I think as soon as we set the goal of gold medal, it’s go big or go home. It was incredible.”

DINA ASHER-SMITH Joy followed heartbreak for sprinter Dina Asher-Smith when she helped bring home a bronze in the 4x100m relay after having to pull out of her individual events due to injury. And her happiness was clear as the 25-year-old runner (above, second from right) joined team-mates (from left) Asha Philip, Daryll Neita and Imani-Lara ansiquot for a victory photo. The men’s 4x100m relay am then went one better, finishing 0.01secs behind Italy to e silver. Keely Hodgkinson kicked off Team GB’s track dals with second place in the 800m and it was silver, too, Laura Muir in the 1,500m – “I’m overblown,” she said.

36

KATE FRENCH A brilliant series of performances saw Kate French become Team GB’s Olympic modern pentathlon champion after completing four laps of an 800m circuit, stopping to hit a target five times with a pistol at the end of each one. It was a stunning finale for the 30-year-old athlete (above), who also had to compete in fencing, swimming and showjumping. “I actually don’t know what to say, I can’t really believe it right now,” she said. “I knew I could do it if I focused on my shooting and just ran as fast as I could. I could hear the team cheering me on and I can’t thank everyone back home enough for all their support.”

SKY BROWN She turned 13 last month and Sky Brown is now Team GB’s youngest ever Olympic medallist following a breathtaking performance that saw her win bronze in the women’s park skateboarding event. Making her feat even more remarkable, the teenager had come back from a horrific fall last year that left her with a fractured skull and broken wrist and arm. Beaming with delight after the final, Sky, who was born in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother and British father, said: “This is incredible. It feels unreal. I’m so happy to be here. I’m blessed. All the girls are ripping it. It was insane. It was a super-sick final.”

happy to swap the pool for the Cornish surf on a well-deserved getaway with girlfriend Emily Large. “I hadn’t had the chance to let it all sink in, so it’s nice to have a little detox in Newquay, to step back and relax,” says the swimmer, who won gold as part of the men’s 200m freestyle relay team and spoke to hello! ahead of his post-Olympics break. However, the active couple weren’t planning on lounging on the beach. “We don’t like sitting around, we get bored,” laughs Emily, a fellow international swimmer, who specialises in butterfly and competed at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. “We will spend lots of time in the sea.”

Emily, 20, and Matt, 18, got together last year when the country’s top swimmers were sent to Bath and Loughborough to return to training safely at the end of lockdown in May. “I’m from Newcastle and Matt’s down in Worcester, but we both decided to move to Bath and continue our journey there and see where it takes us,” explains Emily. IN THE SAME LANE Both being elite athletes has meant their relationship is going swimmingly. “We have the same mindset. We motivate each other through the highs and lows. hoping to bring Satisfaction to scores of young people by making their dreams of a music career come true. k, guitarist Ronnie Wood stepped out s ife Sally to open a state-of-the-art recording studio that the band helped create in partnership with the Community Links centre in Canning Town, London. “I remember the help I got as a youngster and it is only right that, through this great charity, the Stones are giving a hand to all the budding musicians in East London,” said the musician. “It was amazing and such an honour,” adds Sally in this exclusive interview with hello!. “Some of the young people performed for us and you can tell it’s life-changing for them. Their confidence soars through music and creativity. It’s wonderful to see. “It reminded me of the studios at the Roundhouse Theatre, which I also support. They’re incredible.” Now Ronnie, 74, and Sally, 43, are gearing up to hit the road again on The Rolling Stones’ No Filter tour. “Everyone is so excited,” says Sally. “We can’t wait.” However, they’ll be missing band member Charlie Watts from the US dates – the drummer’s spokesman last week said he needed “proper rest and recuperation” after “a procedure which was completely successful”. It follows the postponement of the group’s

sell-out North American concerts in early 2019, when singer Sir Mick Jagger had to undergo heart valve replacement surgery. Despite this, the dynamic Jumping Jack Flash is now raring to go after celebrating his 78th birthday last month with a glittering glamping party joined by family and friends. “It was a beautiful night and a real treat to see people dressed up and allowed to party again,” Sally says. CATS IN THE WEST END Film and theatre producer Sally has also been busy, co-producing Footballers’ Wives – The Musical with the original TV show writer Maureen Chadwick, and the soon-to-be-released film Vindication Swim, starring Victoria Summer. In addition, this week, she and Ronnie will showcase two breathtaking works of art close to their hearts. The artistic duo have each designed decoration for life-sized lion sculptures that will form part of a curated art trail in a global celebration of African lions. Sally’s cool cat will be showcased on London’s Carnaby Street, while Ronnie’s king of the jungle will cause a stir a stone’s throw away. “His lion will be holding up traffic on Piccadilly Circus,” Sally says with a smile. “How incredible is that?” The striking sculptures form part of a pride that silently prowls through iconic locations around the world, serving to highlight the threat lions face to their existence every day. ‘It’s heartbreaking that lions have become endangered’ the campaign ties in with Lion Awareness Week and has the support of more than 45 artists, musicians and sportspeople. They include wildlife photographer David Yarrow, fashion designer Donna Karan and actor John Cleese, who have all put their creative mark on the noble beasts. Each sculpture will be auctioned off on 9 November, with funds raised going towards Tusk and various conservation programmes. NEED FOR ACTION An accomplished artist and ambassador for the charity, Ronnie designed two lions at his studio while Sally created a glitter-glazed animal, collaborating with scenic artist Jess Power. “I was inspired by the African landscape at sunset and all endangered animals, but mainly the lion,” she says. “For me, this noble creature signifies strength, courage and leadership. They’re incredible animals – so powerful and utterly beautiful – and it’s heartbreaking that they’ve become an endangered species. We must do all we can to protect them.” The couple’s five-year-old twins, Alice and Gracie, also joined in the creative process, showing off their artistic talents with a lion and rhino of their own. “They’re in the garden and they’re huge,” Sally tells us. “The girls adore wildlife. If it moves, they’re into it.” Faced with the daunting statistic that the African lion population has halved over the past 25 years, Sally hopes they get the chance to see lions in their natural habitat in the future. “I’ve never been on safari, although Ronnie has many times,” she says. “We’d love to go as a H family one day.” INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN

THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX

PAYS A TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO HER CHILDREN IN A VIDEO FROM HER CALIFORNIAN HOME

s she celebrated her milestone 40th birthday last week, the Duchess of Sussex had plenty to be thankful for. With two adorable young children and a devoted husband at her side, she is happily settled into her dream home on the sun-kissed Californian coastline. However, by launching her 40x40 initiative to mark her milestone birthday on 4 August – her “40th lap around the sun” as she calls it – Meghan gave many others cause for thanks by encouraging people around the world to commit to giving 40 minutes of their time to support women going back to work. Among the 40 friends already signed up to support the initiative are her husband’s cousin, new mum Princess Eugenie, singer Adele, designer Stella McCartney, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the

wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin, and Bridesmaids actress Melissa McCarthy. Making her first public appearance since the birth of daughter Lilibet in June in a video uploaded to the website of the Archewell Foundation she and her husband the Duke set up last year, she explains more about the project she hopes will have “a ripple effect”. Meghan is seated, with her pet beagle Guy on a dog bed in the background, at a desk with family photos, a neat pile of copies of her children’s book The Bench, and a Harrods cup and saucer with a plate of biscuits. In a touching nod to her children, she wears two diamond necklaces by Los Angeles jeweller Logan Hollowell representing their star signs: Taurus for two-year-old Archie and Gemini for baby Lilibet. Prince Harry, 36, even makes a cameo appearance, in an outtake at the end, as he attempts

to juggle outside the window, to the delight of his wife. The video also shows Meghan enjoying a skit with Melissa, who suggests a Suits cast reunion for her big day, matching “besties forever” tattoos or a birthday bash on a yacht – even an afternoon tea with their chickens, to which Meghan replies: “I don’t really think tea with the chickens is what we had in mind…”. Melissa then suggests “another photoshoot under a tree where you’re looking very peaceful”, to which Meghan responds: “Peaceful under a tree is me every day.” She is also seen blowing out a candle on a delicious birthday cake covered in cream frosting and fruit. A UNIQUE BIRTHDAY GIFT After the scheme was unveiled, Princess Eugenie posted an Instagram post pledging to take part. The 31-year-old, who is close to Harry and Meghan,

And then what would happen if we asked our friends to do the same?” Meghan says she was inspired to act as: “In the past two years, and in large part because of the Covid-19 pandemic, tens of millions of women around the world have left the workforce, including over two million women in the US. “I believe mentorship is one way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength, and for my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kick off a global effort by contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women reentering the workforce…

“I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well.” As well as launching 40x40, Meghan is enjoying taking time with Harry to focus on their young family, two months on from the arrival of their baby daughter. MORE ADVENTURES AHEAD But as she enjoys the newborn cuddles with Lilibet and precious toddler time with her eldest, Archie, Meghan is no doubt also busy making plans for the coming months. Having already listed the roles of actress, senior royal, philanthropist, podcaster and author on her CV in recent years, the Duchess has now added executive producer. In her own birthday post on the Archewell website, Meghan writes: “In reflecting on my 40th birthday and the many things I am grateful for, I’m struck that time is among our greatest and most essential gifts: Time with our loved ones, time doing the things we love, time spent learning, laughing, growing, and the sacred time we have on this Earth. Amongst the most valuable gifts of time is also time spent in service to others knowing that it can contribute to incredible change.

Meghan says of the series, which she is working on with filmmaker David Furnish, husband of Sir Elton John: “Like many girls her age our heroine Pearl is on a journey of selfdiscovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges.” Meghan described herself last year as “a mother, feminist and advocate” and in recent months her advocacy has been evident as she and Harry

have used their platform to highlight issues such as racial inequality and vaccine equity, while encouraging people to use their vote. Meghan has long championed the importance of representation and her first children’s book, The Bench, a series of poems about fathers and children with illustrations of diverse families, became an instant New York Times bestseller. Reacting to the news in June, she said: “While this poem began as a love letter to my

To celebrate her milestone birthday, hello ! highlights the Duchess’s love of motherhood and her commitment to her missions…

‘The most important title I’ll ever have’ he has been a waitress, an actress and a Duchess S but, in Meghan’s own words: “The most important title I’ll ever have is mom.” The Duchess of Sussex said it while speaking to talk-show host and friend Oprah Winfrey with her husband the Duke of Sussex in March and months later, blessed with two children, she is clearly embracing the greatest role of her life. Her sense of contentment and freedom as a mother shines through in a video she and Harry shared of their son Archie running along a deserted beach before giving his mum a hug. With baby Lilibet making their family complete, she is overjoyed. The couple announced their pregnancy by sharing a black-andwhite photo on Valentine’s Day of them at their California home. Expressing her happiness in the touching portrait – taken by close friend Misan Harriman – Meghan is seen smiling, her head in Harry’s lap, while tenderly cradling her baby bump in a long Carolina Herrera dress she’d worn while pregnant with firstborn Archie. As a tribute to Harry’s beloved mother, their revelation was carefully timed for 14 February, the same date it had been announced that the Princess of Wales was pregnant with Harry, who was also her second child. A month later – the day after the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah – Meghan again celebrated motherhood by sharing another intimate portrait from their pregnancy shoot, released to coincide with International Women’s Day. With Harry’s arms around her, the pregnant Duchess exuded maternal warmth as she cuddled Archie. “What wonderful news to celebrate on International Women’s Day,”! Congratulations my friends, and welcome to the #girldad club H,” Misan captioned the photo on Twitter. The couple’s heartfelt statement on their Archewell website following the birth of Lilibet Diana – named

after her great-grandmother the Queen and her paternal grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales – on 4 June perfectly summed up Meghan’s elation at becoming a mum for the second time: “She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.” The former actress revealed to hello! in 2015, six years before Lilibet’s arrival, that she had a special Cartier French Tank watch, purchased to celebrate her breakthrough show Suits being renewed for a third season. “I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version,” she told us. “I had it engraved on the back: ‘To M.M. From M.M.” and plan to give it to my daughter one day.” Since welcoming Archie in May 2019, Meghan has shared snapshots of her experience, from the rapturous first days to the emotionally overwhelming adjustment to life in the spotlight. Days after he was born, she said: “I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy.” Of her newborn, she added: “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm. He’s just been the dream, so it’s been a special couple of days.” Archie’s great-grandparents the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were among the first to meet him, with his maternal grandma Doria Ragland, at Windsor Castle, and proud mum Meghan couldn’t wait to show him off. “It’ll be a nice moment to introduce the baby to more family, and my mom’s with us as well,” she said. After just a few months’ maternity leave, the Duchess returned to royal duties, taking Archie with her and Harry on a tour of South Africa, where the four-monthold famously met Archbishop Desmond Tutu. “Travelling as well with a baby, my goodness it’s a lot,” she said. “But it’s all so exciting.”

‘Refugee camps to red carpets…’ he may have just launched her new global S initiative 40x40, but Meghan demonstrated her support for women’s empowerment and social justice from an early age. Setting out her stall as an 11-year-old schoolgirl, she successfully campaigned for Procter & Gamble to alter its use of sexist language in an advert for washing-up liquid. She fine-tuned her awareness of social issues as a teenager when she volunteered at a soup kitchen on Los Angeles’s Skid Row, and she later dedicated her time to charitable causes, working as a global ambassador for World Vision Canada, travelling to Rwanda to support the charity’s Clean Water campaign. She also became involved with the United Nations, delivering a speech on International Women’s Day in 2015. She delighted in mixing her campaigning with her acting work: “While my life shifts from refugee camps to red carpets, I choose them both because these worlds can, in fact, co-exist. And for me, they must.” It was in the slum communities of Mumbai in 2017 with World Vision that she witnessed the work of the Myna Mahila Foundation, which works to improve menstrual hygiene and female empowerment, and was one of the charities the Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked guests to support in lieu of gifts at their 2018 wedding. A group of loyal Meghan fans styling themselves “the sussexsquad” held a month-long appeal in honour of her 40th birthday and raised more than £33,000 for the foundation.

As a working member of the royal family, the Duchess took on patronages that reflected her interests and passions, from gender equality to animal welfare, the arts and education. She has retained her ties with two of the organisations that are, perhaps, closest to her heart. One is the London-based Mayhew, founded in 1886 to help animal owners struggling to look after their pet cats and dogs. A dog-lover herself – Meghan has a black labrador named Pula and a beagle named Guy, who appears in her 40x40 birthday video with Melissa McCarthy – she became the charity’s first royal patron in January 2019 after contacting them directly. She also sponsors a kennel in the name of her son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. The other charity she kept was London-based Smart Works, which gives unemployed women attending job interviews a dressing and coaching service and a follow-up working wardrobe. Having left the royal family as working members and since relocated to California, Meghan and Harry continue their philanthropic work through the Archewell Foundation, the charitable arm of their organisation, which also includes their media companies. With an aim to “uplift and unite communities one act of compassion at a time”, the couple have set H out their goal to “build a better world”. MAIN REPORT: EMILY NASH

and warm climate, it is the perfect holiday destination. And the Isles of Scilly are also where, for the second year in a row, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children have chosen to spend their summer break – as hello! can reveal they headed to the islands, off the coast of Cornwall, for a relaxing family break during the school summer holidays. The family of five spent a few days on the sparsely populated archipelago, which offers the perfect mix of natural beauty, total relaxation and privacy.

Coastal trails provide ideal cycling paths to keep lively youngsters – including Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Prince Louis – active, and there are hidden coves where they can explore and build sand castles to their hearts’ content. There are seafood restaurants in the most beautiful of settings, such as the Crab Shack at Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher, where a “monster” local crab costs £45. hello! has learnt that during their break, Prince William and Kate, who celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in April, managed to enjoy a romantic night out, which would have

On St Mary’s, Hugh Town has a population barely into four figures. The privacy and peace are a big part of Scilly’s appeal to the Duke and Duchess (right on a 2016 visit to Tresco) and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte (above with their father at Sandringham in June) and Prince Louis given them a welcome break from taking care of their energetic children. An onlooker said: “I saw William and Kate having a meal by themselves at a lovely restaurant that was on the beach. FAMILY CONNECTION The main Scilly islands are St Mary’s, St Martin’s, Bryher, St Agnes and Tresco, the last of which is privately run. All five islands are famous for clear blue waters, beautiful sandy beaches and easy access by boat.

It is thought the Cambridges arrived by either helicopter – which takes around 15 minutes – or small plane, which costs around £130 for an adult fare. Jeff Reines, content editor of Cornwall Live, says the family couldn’t have picked a better place for their summer break. “The Isles of Scilly are only 28 miles off the coast of Britain but they can feel like they are a world away,” he said. “It’s easy to see why any family – not least one that spends so much time in the public eye – would go there to try to get away from the rigours of daily life, because you feel like you are as far away as the Caribbean.

It’s the second year in a row the royals have opted for the destination for their holiday, as last year they were spotted cycling around Tresco. No doubt the break brought back many sentimental memories for Prince William, who enjoyed an idyllic holiday there as a child with his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and his brother Prince Harry in 1989.

“They have their own subtropical climate and re unique in geography and appearance. “It’s a close-knit community where the people re lovely and completely non-obtrusive, so it’s he one place you can imagine William, Kate nd the children walking around where nobody ould approach them, as they would appreciate hat they were having their family time.”

‘A REAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVENTURE Nick Bond is executive director of the Islands’ Partnership, the official destination management organisation for the Isles of Scilly The Isles of Scilly have an enduring, timeless appeal: the immense sense of community only a tiny archipelago of this size can create, coupled with the sense of freedom, the surrounding wilderness and sheer breadth of natural beauty at every turn. Scilly offers a real opportunity for adventure; the very nature of island-hopping

invites exploration and means visitors can experience a different island every day. Visitors are sometim surprised at just how diffe each island is – each of the five inhabited islands has its own character and heritage, shaped and established over the centuri and surrounding them are the famous cry clear waters and white sands, which entic around 100,000 visitors each year.

And he’s not the only royal who has frequently returned to the area; Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall stopped by only last month, during an official three-day visit to Devon and Cornwall. They travelled to St Mary’s and Bryher, where Camilla alluded to the popularity of the destination when she said: “I know it is difficult to find somewhere to stay. It’s very busy here. It will be very busy this summer.” Tresco has a population of only around 180 and boasts private beaches and coves, as well as waterfront restaurants, sandy bays and the popular subtropical Tresco Abbey Garden – the perfect destination for a family looking to get away from it all. The family have previously been known to holiday in Mustique. THE PERFECT GETAWAY Stuart Reid, chief executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, which offers transport to the islands by air and sea, said: “The Isles of Scilly is such a magical place, it’s no surprise William and Kate have chosen to come back for another family holiday – as so many visitors do. With white sand beaches and clear blue seas, you could be forgiven for thinking you had flown long haul rather than just a 15-minute hop from Land’s End. “For anyone seeking peace and privacy, it’s the perfect destination. And for a family holiday, there’s nowhere better. Scilly is safe and ideal for children of all ages. There’s so much to do, from watersports to beachcombing, wildlife spotting to cycling. Life here moves at a more natural pace and it really helps to recharge the batteries. “We hope William and Kate made some more wonderful memories on Scilly and love the H islands as much as we do.” REPORT: LAURA BENJAMIN AND DANIELLE STACEY

anniversary of her late husband the Duke of Edinburgh’s birth, the world got a rare glimpse of the monarch in one of her favourite places. Stretching out beneath her private apartments, the beautifully landscaped East Terrace Garden was the place where Her Majesty enjoyed a spot of fresh air and exercise during lockdowns. Now, with the monarch at her Scottish holiday home Balmoral for the summer, you too can spend time in the garden she’s loved since childhood. For the second summer running, East Terrace Garden is open to the public after remaining under wraps for 40 years. Until September, weekend tickets to Windsor Castle include entry to the Queen’s private

garden, which includes 3,500 rose bushes and a bronze lotus fountain centrepiece designed by Prince Philip himself, as well as the newly planted Duke of Edinburgh rose. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and has been home to 39 monarchs. It’s where the Queen traditionally spends her weekends, but during the pandemic she and Philip relocated there full time and formed a bubble with their staff. East Terrace Garden was created in the 1820s for George IV and designed by architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville; Philip redesigned the flowerbeds some years ago and the garden is particularly special to Her Majesty. During the Second World War, the then Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret,

But this summer, you too can picnic in the shadow of one of the world’s most famous landmarks as Her Majesty throws open the garden of her official London residence to allow the public to wander around freely for the first time. With garden parties cancelled for the second year running because of the pandemic, tickets are on sale until 19 September to visit the royal backyard and eat your lunch alfresco while admiring the palace and its stunning grounds. You can explore the 39acre garden independently or take a guided tour, which includes the Rose Garden and meadows. Dating back to the 1820s, when George IV turned Buckingham House into a palace, the garden is home to more than 1,000 trees and 320 different wildflower and grass species. Meanwhile, its homegrown botanicals, including lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, bay leaves and mulberry leaves, are used to make Buckingham Palace’s own brand of gin.

The urban oasis features a 512ft herbaceous border, plane trees planted by and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and a 3.5-acre lake and island with beehives that produce honey for the royal kitchens. On Mondays, children can enjoy art and craft activities and 26 and 30 August are Family Festival days, where special family tours explore lesser-known areas of the garden.

Prince William, Kate and their children Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, live in the palace’s Apartment 1A, which, far from being a humble flat, is actually a fourstorey, 20-room official residence, where they have entertained the former US President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama. While a visit to Kensington Palace won’t get you inside the Cambridges’ private quarters, you can explore the

This week (until 15 August), the Luna Cinema takes up residence in front of the palace, which is floodlit to provide a spectacular backdrop to a giant screen showing classics such as Top Gun, Pretty Woman and Singin’ in the Rain. DIANA’S PLACE Last month, William and his brother the Duke of Sussex unveiled the long-awaited memorial statue to their mother, which stands in the palace’s tranquil Sunken Garden – the same place Prince Harry chose for the photocall to announce his

Meanwhile, visitors to the palace can step inside the recently restored Orangery to see the iconic ivory silk taffeta wedding dress that Diana wore to walk down the aisle at St Paul’s Cathedral 40 years ago. The David and Elizabeth Emanuel creation, complete with its showstopping 25ft train, is part of the Royal Style in the Making exhibition, which also includes outfits worn by Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother and runs until 2 January next year. he Queen once said that the T Royal Yacht Britannia was the “one place where I can truly relax” and her affection for her floating palace was never more evident than in 1997, when she was seen shedding a tear as her beloved ship was decommissioned as a cost-cutting exercise by Tony Blair’s Government. For 44 years, Britannia had been a home away from home for the royal family and she sailed more than one million miles on 968 official visits around the globe. The Queen and Prince Philip enjoyed family holidays on board with their four children, while the Prince and Princess of Wales spent their honeymoon in August 1981 cruising around the Mediterranean, where Diana was photographed gazing adoringly at her new husband. Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon also honeymooned on the yacht, as did the Duke and Duchess of York, while one of the most touching images captured on board saw Diana reunited with her young sons, William and Harry, in Toronto in 1991. Today, Britannia is the only royal yacht in the world available for exclusive private hire and is billed as one of the most luxurious

five-star venues in the world. You can dine in the very spot where Her Majesty entertained Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Ronald Reagan, with top-notch food prepared in the same royal galleys and everything replicated to the same high standards as when the boat was in royal service. Ten years ago, Zara Phillips hired the venue to celebrate her imminent marriage to Mike Tindall and partied with her mother the Princess Royal and cousins William and Harry, as well as Kate and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. If you don’t have the budget for such extravagance, you can simply buy a ticket to visit the yacht, which is docked in Edinburgh. You can wander around the Queen’s stunning state apartments – the yacht is the only royal residence where the bedroom of a living monarch can be seen – and tuck into a champagne cream tea in the Royal Deck Tea Room, where the royal family played deck games and entertained their guests. But don’t forget to take a watch as each clock on board points to 15.01, the exact moment the Queen stepped off her beloved Britannia as a home for the last time. could enjoy its elegant interiors and antiques for years to come; today, Dumfries House serves as the headquarters of his heritage charity The Prince’s Foundation. Back in 2007, the Prince stepped in at the 11th hour to buy the 18th-century estate, just as its contents, including its original Chippendale furniture, were being shipped off to Christie’s auction house. This month the house, which was built in the 1750s for William Crichton Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries, reopened for guided tours after being shut by the pandemic for more than a year.

You can stay on the estate’s fivestar country guest house Dumfries Lodge, which has 22 luxury guest rooms and two self-catering cottages, and eat at the Woodlands Restaurant or Coach House Café. Meanwhile, the five-acre Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden is currently in bloom and the maze, which was inspired by Charles’s childhood visits to Sandringham, is also open to the public. If you’re feeling brave, you can take a dip in the nearby New Cumnock Swimming Pool, Scotland’s only outdoor freshwater swimming pool, which was threatened with closure in 2016 but rescued by The Prince’s Foundation. The Duchess of Cambridge ‘to tackle new rugby roles’ he Duchess of Cambridge is reportedly T taking on new roles as royal patron of both the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League. According to an article in the Sunday Times, Kate, 38, will take over from the Duke of Sussex, who had to give up both positions when he and his wife the Duchess stopped being working royals. Kensington Palace has not yet confirmed the appointments. Patronage of England’s two rugby bodies would fit in nicely with several of Kate’s other roles: she is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and the Lawn Tennis Association, as well as SportsAid and the 1851 Trust, which encourages youth sports. The Duchess has long been a devotee of rugby union, having grown up supporting England, and has made appearances at Rugby World Cup and Six Nations matches – she was gripped by the France versus Wales game during an official visit to Paris in 2017. Meanwhile, her husband the Duke is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union. Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton has also written of her family’s love of the game, saying: “The focal point was international matches… We’d plan our weekends around the matches.” The Queen, who was patron of both organisations herself until 2016, is expected to announce the Duchess’s new role before the Rugby League World Cup, which has been put back to 2022 from this autumn. It is thought one of the Duchess’s early moves will be to champion the Allianz Inner Warrior campaign to encourage more female players. For the latest celebrity news, visit hellomagazine.com

REJOICING IN A SUMMER OF MUSIC

PROMS AND PASSION JOSIE D’ARBY, KATIE DERHAM AND CLIVE MYRIE ON THEIR DELIGHT AS AUDIENCES RETURN TO THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

s the first notes broke through the silence, A there was a huge sigh of relief and joy at the recent return of the BBC Proms in all their glory, heralding a summer of musical delights after an incredibly tough year for the arts. Now, in our exclusive celebratory photoshoot at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which is staging the Proms for the 80th time in its 150-year history, Katie Derham, Clive Myrie and Josie d’Arby reveal how presenting the world’s largest classical music festival – with 2,000 musicians performing at 52 concerts over 44 days – is more than a coveted job: it’s a passion. It’s “a pleasure and a privilege”, former news presenter Katie says. “While being really proud of what they managed to achieve last year within the [coronavirus] restrictions, having no audience obviously made a huge difference. The buzz on the First Night was remarkable. It’s fantastic to be back in this wonderful venue, sharing live music with an audience.”

A CRESCENDO OF GLAMOUR It’s always a spectacular reason to roll out the red-carpet style, too. New Mastermind host and jazz aficionado Clive – who makes his debut this year in the presenting line-up – says: “Oh yes, I’m a sucker for a nice tux.”

PIECES OF MUSIC Welsh-born Josie tells how seeing her first musical, Chess, ignited her interest. “I was at school but I took a job as an usher at the theatre just so I could watch the show. All my wages went on the train fare to Bristol, and I’d have to run for the last train home in the evening! I was just captivated by how the music elevated, enhanced or explained emotions. It was true escapism. Then I started to listen to classical and was overwhelmed at what music could do, with or without words.” Katie, who grew up in Cheshire and “always played the piano and violin”, has presented the Proms since 2010 and it is now an annual family highlight. “They love coming to the Proms; from my first year, when my younger daughter was only five… she loved the Stephen Sondheim Prom. She thought he was called Stephen Song Time, which I think is a great name for him.” Among the many highlights will be Sir Simon Rattle leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a celebration of Stravinsky, the KannehMason family performing The Carnival of the Animals, joined by former Children’s

Slipping on a showstopping red Gaby Charbachy gown, artist and broadcaster Josie enthuses about the famous Last Night singalong. “Hearing so many voices singing together is epic; I think it only happens at important football or rugby matches, and it’s that same atmosphere and energy in the hall.” Katie agrees that the sense of occasion during the music extravaganza is perfect for fashion lovers but adds: “I always want people to know that they don’t have to dress up. Lots of people come on the day, just popping in on their way home from work, or from the park.” Whatever the dress code, music is the shared passion. “My love of music began around the age of ten or 11, when I started playing the violin and trumpet at school,” says Lancashireborn Clive, whose appreciation for jazz developed during his university years. His wife Catherine “used to queue up to get cheap tickets when she was a student in the 1980s”.

He has always been a huge fan. “I remember our whole family gathering around the TV to watch as a kid when Magnus Magnusson was presenting in the 1970s. She has been applauded for sharing candid updates with her 100,000 social media followers during her treatment – describing multiple rounds of chemotherapy, hair loss and cold caps, encouraging women to go for mammograms and detailing the devastation and elation of bad and good news. “I want people to feel empowered, to know that they can still work, bring up their kids and look good,” she says. “You can still live your life, enjoy your life and never have to give up.” In a bid to keep her cancer at bay, the former Olympic gymnast has also spoken of how she keeps fit, practises yoga, eats healthily and has cut sugar from her diet. She has tried holistic therapies alongside conventional treatments such as olaparib, a targeted medicine she received after the recent diagnosis of the cancer’s spread. Within eight weeks, tumours that had shown up so prominently on a scan had vanished. Jacquie recalls receiving the uplifting news during a car journey she and her family will never forget. Her husband Eduardo’s mother Anna had just died and he had been trying to get a flight from Heathrow to her home in Brazil when suddenly Jacquie’s mobile rang. “It was my oncologist with the results of the scan I’d had only a couple of hours earlier,” she says. “‘There’s no evidence of cancer,’ she said. ‘Your scan is completely clear.’ I was stunned and told Eduardo and the boys. At that moment our tears of grief also became tears of relief.” However, Jacquie is proceeding with caution. “I’ve learnt that life can be so uncertain,” she says. “But this result is the best I can hope H for and I am so grateful.” INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN

STORMZY’S SCHOLARSHIPS GRADUATE TO THE NEXT LEVEL e’s known for his chart-topping hits, but grime H artist Stormzy has brought music to the ears of some young people in a different way – by pledging to fund their studies at Cambridge University. “For 30 more black students to have the opportunity to study at Cambridge – the same year our initial 2018 scholars graduate – feels like an incredible milestone,” the star (pictured above with Cambridge students) said as he announced that ten scholars each year for the next three years will have their tuition fees and maintenance costs covered under a new partnership between his charity, #Merky Foundation, and bank HSBC UK. Stormzy’s initiative, open to UK students of black or mixed race heritage with a confirmed university place, has led to a significant increase in the number of black pupils applying to study at Cambridge, one of the top universities in the world.

ECO-FRIENDLY HORSES HAVE THEIR HAY DAY

82

When it came to trimming a wildflower meadow at Cambridge University’s iconic King’s College, a pair of trusty shire horses have proved it’s neigh problem. The equine duo made history last week as they pulled a mower to tame blooming wildflowers, including vibrant poppies, cornflowers and corn chamomiles. The horses provide an ecofriendly solution, as they give time for wildlife to leave the site. “Not only do they have a far lower carbon footprint than using a rotary mower, the sight of these creatures at work in the college should make for a bucolic scene,” said head gardener Steve Coghill. The planting of the wildflowers last year ended a 300-year tradition of keeping a neatly-mowed lawn, resulting in the meadow supporting three times more plant species than the lawn.

SAIRA KHAN’S PICK OF THE WEEK

I am so inspired by Kat Cordiner, Charlotte Irving and Johnston, who are rowing 3,000 miles across the this December to raise money for three cancer s; Cancer Research UK, Macmillan and The arsden Cancer Charity. are participating in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and hope to set a new world speed record. It’s brilliant to see three women leading from the front and doing something incredible. The thought of them going out on a 23ft boat for up to 60 days, rowing two hours on, two hours off continuously, is incredible. What I love about this journey is that they are fearless. One of the ladies, Kat, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019 and last July she was told it had come back. A lot of us see cancer as a death sentence but with the right help, funding and research, we’re finding

more and more people can be saved. I know cancer patients and charities have really suffered during the pandemic, so to fundraise for them is phenomenal. Charlotte, Abby and Kat (top, from left) might spark a lightbulb moment in someone else’s head, who has always wanted to do something like this but doesn’t believe they can. As their team name suggests, t are three ordinary women, but they’re do something extraOARdinary. This amazing story shows that we can achieve goals and dreams if we push ourselves outside ou comfort zones.

AS SHE HAPPILY WAITS TO SAY ‘I DO’

ANTHEA TURNER

LIFE IS BLOOMING AS SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO MARRIAGE WITH MARK eternally optimistic broadcaster Anthea Turner is making the most of her lengthier engagement to businessman Mark Armstrong, whom she describes as “the absolute love of my life”. “Mark and I are living together in London and I’m slowly putting my stamp on his place. It’s being ‘de-bloked’ as we speak, but he hasn’t realised yet,” she tells us. “I actually think he is secretly enjoying it. At our age we are merging two lives and lifestyles and tastes, so we are having fun navigating all that.” As for setting the date, she says: “Italy is still being considered but it has become complicated with all the travel issues, so we will have to wait and see what next year brings. As you get older you don’t worry about these things in the same way. It will all fall into place when the time is right.” While wedding plans are in the slow lane, their romance moved at whirlwind speed: just two months after their first date, Mark proposed in 2019 in Rome, where they had travelled for her half-Italian partner’s birthday on 1 September. There have also been other memorable dates recently, including celebrating her 61st in Brighton

Anthea still hopes to walk down the aisle in 84 Italy but is holding off making plans. “It will all fall into place when the time is right,” she says

when restrictions lifted – “We were so grateful to get away for a few nights and wake up and look at the sea, which is my idea of heaven” – and being reunited with her 90-yearold mum and 88-year-old dad in Stoke-on-Trent. “We had been in constant phone contact, but it was gorgeous to see them at last.” PASSION PROJECT She has also been having bags of fun, turning her talents to working with Sarah Haran on her own handbag collection. Known for her clever and stylish signature creations that can be worn in different ways, Sarah is launching Anthea’s Chrysanthea range – a cross-body or shoulder bag that has a distinctive detachable smaller pouch bag on the front – this week. Posing for these exclusive photos at Eastwell Manor in Kent with her French bulldog, Soho, Anthea tells how it’s been a personal passion project. “Your handbag is an extension of you, isn’t it? It’s your little piece of home when you are not there, so it’s a vital piece of kit. “I feel it needs to be an investment piece that can’t just look good, it has to be functional, wear after wear, year after year.” Known as the original Queen of Clean, Anthea – who came up with

‘Mark and I are living together in London and I’m slowly putting my stamp on his place’ the sweet name for the bag with Sarah, combining her own with that of the garden flower – is unlikely to include the usual clutter we all tend to carry around in our handbags – though she laughs as she says: “Like a squirrel, I always keep some nuts on hand, to keep away any hunger pangs.” And she always carries a notebook and pen. “I know you can make lists on your phone, but you can’t beat the written word – and it stops me forgetting H anything important!” INTERVIEW: JANE DOWDESWELL

Enjoying life with her fiancé Mark Armstrong (above), Anthea has been busy putting her 85 stylish influence on the home they share, as well as working with luxury brand Sarah Haran on a collection of handbags (far left in Blue Pearl and left in Caramel – with her dog Soho). exclusively to hello! at the family’s home in Oxfordshire. “It even sounds as if he’s trying to speak to us. We’re convinced we’ve already heard his first word.” Right on cue – and to everyone’s astonishment – baby Olie seems to echo his mum, saying: “Hello!” after she repeats the word to him.

This lively little chap is RJ and Megan’s third son, and the three older children, Maxwell-Robin, eight, Theodore-Alexander, six, and Ella, 11, gather excitedly around the new arrival alongside Robin’s widow – and devoted grandmother – Nana Dwina. “We couldn’t imagine having a

with a smile. “He likes being sung to, too, and when he holds his thumbs between his fingers, he reminds me of my father, who did this when he was deep in thought.” Olie was due on 20 May – the ninth anniversary of the day RJ’s father Robin died aged 62, after a brave battle with cancer – but arrived

two days earlier. “The pregnancy was running smoothly until I reached week 30,” Megan tells us. “Olie had turned and engaged prematurely and, because doctors thought I would give birth early, I was placed on bed rest and given steroid injections to help mature his lungs.” It was during a check-up at The

Portland Hospital in London on 18 May that they discovered Megan’s waters had broken and began to induce the birth. Despite being almost fully dilated, Megan couldn’t feel any contractions. “I was waiting for the pain, but it didn’t come,” she says. RJ adds: “The monitor showed she was having huge

baby again,” says RJ, 38. “But now it feels as if Olie’s always been here.” “We have three brothers Gibb under one roof again,” adds Megan, 41, alluding to the famous Bee Gees – brothers Robin, Maurice and Barry. “Olie can certainly hit the high notes right now.” “He’s a crying vibrato,” RJ says,

Our obstetrician Colin Davis had never seen anything like it.” It wasn’t until 8.05pm that Megan suddenly felt the urge to push and Olie was born 12 minutes later, weighing 9lb 4oz. However, his umbilical cord had wrapped tightly around his neck and the team had to leap into action to free him. “When they placed him in my arms, I was shocked,” RJ says. “His eyes were red from being strangled by the umbilical cord and he was so badly bruised he looked like a boxer. “He really was a fighter, though. When I reached out for his hand, he clenched my finger.” Megan adds: “The skin on his little face was mottled and grey, but the doctors reassured us he would

be fine.” However, there was further concern when Megan developed an inf e cti on and was unable to breastfeed. When Olie couldn’t digest formula milk, she was distraught. “I was in pain and in tears and had no idea how to feed our baby,” she says. “We were desperate.” After searching the internet, RJ found NeoKare, a company that provides frozen pasteurised milk supplied by other mothers. “I’ll be forever grateful to those mums for helping,” Megan says. “Olie started to gain weight – our nickname for him is Pudding.” Olie’s actual first name reflects his Irish heritage through Nana Dwina, while his middle name, Eugene, is in honour of Megan’s father and her favourite uncle. Meeting Nana Dwina and his three siblings, who welcomed Olie with homemade cards and gifts, was

a special moment. “Teddy even gave him one of his favourite toys – Geoffrey the musical giraffe,” Megan says, smiling. “He’d been our baby until then, but when Olie came along, Teddy declared: ‘I’m not the baby any more.’” A GRANDMOTHER’S LOVE Olie has also formed a special bond with Nana Dwina, who tells us: “Holding him for the first time was lovely. When Olie smiles at me, it feels as if we’re connecting. “This house is made for children and I can’t wait to see Olie grow up and run around with his brothers and sister,” she adds. “They all have vibrant personalities. One of them put his model of Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars on a table next to our mini statues of the Bee Gees. Robin would have found that funny and I’m so

sorry he’s missing out on being a grandad. He would have loved it.” D w i n a i s w r i t i n g R o b i n ’s biography, based on his taped recollections. His presence is still keenly felt in the home and there are constant reminders of him through the grandchildren he’s never met. “The boys enjoy singing in the car and I can hear the harmonies in their voices, just like the Bee Gees,” she says. “They’re mini Gibblets.” “We always talk to the children about Robin,” adds Megan. “Our home is opposite the church where he was laid to rest.” RJ says: “The anniversary of Dad’s death was always a sad occasion, but since Olie was born, it will be a time of joy, too.” This autumn, RJ is producing and starring in a celebration of Bee Gees hits and showcasing his own songs in a UK, Scandinavian and European

tour of Legacy, featuring RJ and The Egiziano Brothers. “My father loved their music,” he says. “It will be a nostalgic experience.” A wedding is also on the cards for the family: a week before Olie was born, RJ presented Megan with a Tiffany & Co. heart-shaped platinum and diamond commitment ring to mark their ten-year relationship. “The diamonds represent the love we have for each other and our children and our strength as a family,” says Megan. “It’s a pre-engagement ring,” RJ adds, smiling. “When we get married, we’ll have all our children H around us.” INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN PHOTOS: BRIAN ARIS STYLING: GAYLE RINKOFF HAIR & MAKE-UP: ENZO VOLPE

WOMAN Actress, social activist and brand founder Priyanka Chopra Jonas talks to HELLO! about privilege, new opportunities and how confidence is the key to beauty

W

hen hello! caught up with Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas to find out about her make-up routine and favourite beauty products, she was keen to point out that the life of an actress is not all glamour: “It’s a grind; it sounds like it’s just about red carpets and designer clothes, but it’s a grind. Today, for example, I have been in water all day, being hit by waves for the entire day, even though it’ll only last for two minutes in the movie I’m in.” The 39-year-old Unicef goodwill ambassador, who married singer Nick Jonas in 2018, has had over 20 years in the spotlight. She launched her own sustainable haircare line, Anomaly, in the US earlier this year and has just been announced as a global ambassador and creative collaborator for Max Factor. “I am excited about being a part of the evolution of the brand and the next chapter,” she says. Here, she talks about self-confidence, social responsibility and learning to chill out. Priyanka, why is it important for you to use your platform to champion women’s rights and environmental issues? “Everybody needs to have social responsibility. I was raised in India where you see poverty and affluence living side by side, as you do everywhere in the world, and I learnt at a very young age that social responsibility is something that anyone with privilege needs to have – and privilege is if you have a home, can feed yourself, etc. It doesn’t necessarily mean to empty your wallet or change your life around to be a philanthropist. It’s about caring and what matters to you – what would you like to change? [As the saying goes] ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’ I think it really starts with that.”

92

When do you feel your most beautiful? “When I’m feeling confident. I think if I am

BEAUTY

confident about where I am, what I’m wearing, what I’m doing and how I’m feeling. If I feel confident, I feel beautiful.” What makes you feel confident? “I always go back to my strength, in my job, in everyday life, and I focus on that. I know what I bring to the table, what I’m good at. “Confidence can be someone’s most powerful asset. Whenever I’m having a bad day, I remind myself: ‘This is what you do well, this is why you’re here; just show up and do what you know how to do.’ I remind myself of that and that makes me feel confident.” Congratulations on your new role as a Max Factor ambassador. Where do you take your beauty inspiration from? “The trends that I learn, or who I get inspiration from, are the make-up artists I work with. I am so lucky that I get to work with the best in the business; my face is their canvas. There’s nowhere else I need to turn to learn the newest, most exciting tricks and tips or secrets of the trade because it starts with them – they are creating the trends.”

What has been your favourite red carpet look to date? “Over 20 years, I’ve had a few that I really love, but one that was really special was my first Emmys [in 2016]. It was a custom Jason Wu red number that matched the carpet perfectly. It was so magical.” Away from the red carpet, how do you apply your foundation? “Blend, blend, blend. In my opinion, the most important thing about foundation is you should not be able to see it. I like to use enough for coverage and contouring, but it has to be blended well. It shouldn’t feel like a mask on the face. I like to use my fingers for initial application, and then I like to use a sponge to be able to blend it all out before powder. A little bit goes a long way, especially Max Factor’s Facefinity All Day Flawless Foundation because it’s a primer, foundation and concealer all in one.” Describe your make-up routine. What’s your favourite daytime look? “I’m an on-the-go kind of girl, I don’t have time for a big make-up bag with multiple products. I prefer an [eye] palette which can give me a day-to-night look. Max Factor’s Masterpiece Nude Palette is amazing. I am someone who likes to keep eyes light most of the time, it helps me achieve a beautiful contour.

“For a daytime look, I am a big fan of mascara, and slight colour on the eyes. I do not like mascaras that give you spider eyes after the first application; that’s not the look I like to go for. Divine Lashes Mascara puts a quick curl into my lashes, which I love. The brush doesn’t get clumpy, and at the same time it gives you amazing volume as you layer it.” How do you amp up your eye make-up for a night out? “Going into night, I use the darker shades and build on what I used during the day. I’m all about efficiency. I end up usually creating a smoky eyeliner and a contour on the eye; sometimes I’ll even do a full smoky eye.” ‘I

know what I bring to the table, what I’m good at. Confidence can be someone’s most powerful asset’

You’ve achieved so many things in your career; what would you say is your proudest moment to date? “That’s a very hard question! There are different milestones that have meant various things in my life, but the proudest moment to me is when I look at my family, my mum, my husband, my brother and my friends – when I see pride on their face, that gets me excited

What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? “I would say: ‘This too shall pass.’ In my 20s I used to feel like one mistake and the sky was going to crash. Now, in my 30s, I’m like: ‘No, it doesn’t work that way.’ Everything passes and time heals. I would tell my 20-yearold self to chill out a little bit.”

Struggling to sleep in the heat? You’re not alone – 60% of Britons find it hard to drop off during a heatwave, according to a survey by bedding company Mela. But there are things you can do to help, says NHS doctor Frankie JacksonSpence: “Your core temperature drops a couple of degrees to initiate sleep – this is part of your body’s circadian rhythm, which regulates your sleep-wake cycle. “As many of us don’t have air conditioning, put away your cosy pyjamas for lighter versions or even sleep naked to improve the quality of your shut-eye. And swap your bedding for a lighter summer duvet.” Not only will sleeping naked naturally cool your body temperature, stripping off could come with added benefits, from reducing your stress levels – skin-to-skin contact releases happy hormone oxytocin – to boosting your self-confidence by reinforcing a positive body image. An increase in airflow could also be good for genital health. Try these comforting sleep aids for improved slumber…

Mask-wearing and social distancing during the pandemic has had a profound impact on the hard of hearing and deaf community, with research showing they find it more difficult to communicate and feel isolated and frustrated as a result. In the absence of visual cues, such as lip patterns, there are simple ways you can help bridge the divide, such as speaking clearly while facing someone and using plain language, according to Franki Oliver, audiologist specialist at the Royal National Institute for Deaf People. “Don’t shout,” she says. “Write things down and reduce the amount of background noise where possible. “The most important thing is: ask someone how best you can communicate with them. Everyone has different needs.” For added support, Signia Active Hearing Aids are programmed to your specific hearing loss to help you cut through

ICED FANCIES Nothing tastes better in summer than ice cream. Here, we serve up a scoop or two of Italian-inspired sweet things from Letitia Clark’s La Vita è Dolce to cool you down

PEACH & BASIL SORBET Makes 1ltr/1¾pt Preparation time 25-30 minutes, plus infusing and not including churning

1. Bring the sugar and water to

the boil in a small pan. Simmer for 1 minute (swirl the pan to make sure the sugar has melted but do not stir). Once you have a clear, shiny, thick syrup, remove the pan from the heat. Drop in the torn basil leaves, then decant the syrup into a glass jug or bowl to cool. Cover and set aside.

2. Cut the peaches into chunks

and macerate them with the lemon zest and the lemon juice. 3. When the syrup has cooled, pour it over the peaches and leave the whole lot to infuse for a few hours at room temperature, or covered in the fridge overnight. 4. Blend everything (leaves, zest and peach flesh) in a blender

until you have a smooth purée. Sieve the mixture, discarding the bits of basil left behind in the sieve, and press the pulp to extract all the flavours and juices. 5. Transfer to an ice cream machine and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. To make by hand, see tip on p103. Store in an airtight container. ▼

In a large bowl, whisk the mascarpone, yoghurt and milk together to form a smooth, creamy mixture. Once the sugar syrup has cooled slightly, whisk it into this mixture. ice cream (steps 1-2 above). 2. Put the blackberries, lemon zest, sugar and water in a pan and cook over a low heat, covered with a lid, until the fruit is soft. FOOD SPARKLING LEMON SORBETTO IN LEMONS Makes 1ltr/1¾pt (enough to fill around 6 lemons) Preparation time 40-45 minutes INGREDIENTS • 250ml/9fl oz lemon juice (roughly the juice of 8 small lemons), plus the zest of 1 lemon • 280g/10¼oz caster sugar • 100ml/4fl oz water • 200ml/7fl oz fizzy water (use a slightly salty brand such as San Pellegrino) 1. If you wish to serve this inside

the lemons, cut off 1cm/½in from the base of the fruits to create a flat surface for them to

stand upright. Cut the tops off (a larger 2-3cm/¾-1¼in) to create a good lid, and reserve. Scoop out all of the flesh as if preparing a Halloween pumpkin and squeeze the flesh through a sieve to obtain the juice for your sorbetto. Freeze the lemon shells before using them to serve the sorbet; they look much more effective slightly frosty, and will keep the sorbetto colder for longer. 2. Put the lemon zest into a small

pan. Add the caster sugar and still water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes until syrupy. Strain the syrup through a sieve into a bowl, discarding the zest. 3. Stir in the lemon juice and the fizzy water, then transfer to an ice cream machine and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 4. Serve in the hollowed-out lemons with the lids perched on top.

MAKE ICE CREAM BY HAND If you do not have an ice cream machine, don’t worry. While some recipes can be frozen and scooped straight from the tub, as they are naturally chewy in texture, others will need to be stirred/ whisked/blitzed during the freezing process to prevent ice crystals forming. To make ice cream this way: 1. Pour your mix into a shallow container and cover with baking parchment. Place in the freezer. 2. After 90 minutes, whisk (with a hand whisk) or blitz (in a blender or food processor) the mixture and then return it to the container and freezer. 3. Repeat the process at least twice at intervals of 90 minutes.

hen London-born actress and singer Cynthia Erivo was offered the chance to portray queen of soul Aretha Franklin, she was hit by a stream of emotions. “I was surprised, honoured, gobsmacked, blown away, overwhelmed – all of those things,” she says, chatting exclusively to hello! from her home in Los Angeles. “I was given the opportunity to tell a story of a hero of mine, of someone who inspires the way I sing, the way I hear music. It was one of the most incredible and complicated journeys I’ve ever taken with a character.” Playing the singer in Genius: Aretha gave Cynthia a chance to showcase her vocals as well as her acting skills. “To learn the nuances Aretha put in her music, the choices she made when she would sing, was like taking a masterclass, but being paid to do so,” she says with delight. Since being showcased as a rising star to watch by hello! in 2014, when she was a 26-yearold Rada graduate and theatre star, Cynthia has not stopped. She has taken Broadway and Hollywood by storm, won a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy, ‘One of my dreams and been Oscar nominated Best Actress and Best before I was nominated for Original Song – for Stand Up, was simply to sing on from Harriet, which she coand performed at last the Oscars stage… wrote year’s ceremony. That’s all I wanted. To be able to do that was the dream being realised tenfold.” Cynthia’s love of music began when she was five, but her

mother predicted her future as a performer even earlier. “[My mum] has this baby book and in it she wrote: ‘I think [Cynthia is] going to be a singer and an actress.’ I was like 18 months old or something,” the star has said. Next month, she will consolidate her place in the music world by releasing her debut album, Ch. 1 Vs. 1. Recorded over the past two years, it is the realisation of her original dream and embodies her experiences of life and love. “These are songs that mean a lot to me; they’re like my kids,” she says. “It’s taken a long time to get here. It’s definitely one of those: ‘Oh, my God it’s happened [moments].’ I’m really pleased to finally be able to have an album that is mine. To be able to share it with everyone is really special.” The “overwhelming” reception to the debut single from the album, The Good, which came out in June, is a testament to how special it is. “I wrote the song pure of heart,” she says. “I’ve been getting messages about how people are now playing the song on repeat and how it feels. It’s the thing that gets them going or when they’ve had a bad day.”

DREAM DEBUT

Cynthia also connected with fans in her role as Holly Gibney – a character who lives with obsessive compulsive disorder, synaesthesia, sensory processing disorder and autism – in HBO’s miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider last year. “I’ll get stopped in the street or at an event [by someone] who says: ‘I watched this series and it really helped me communicate with this person.’” After a busy few years, Cynthia’s schedule is still jampacked. She has concerts lined up, “a couple more films in my bag” and is looking forward to next month’s release of her debut children’s book, Remember to Dream, Ebere, which aims to show young readers that no dream is too big or too small. Not one to rest on her laurels, she’s more than happy to go with the flow. “I’m just gonna go with it, to be honest,” she says, laughing, “[2021] seems to do whatever it pleases.” INTERVIEW: EVE ROWLANDS
