ollowing the loss of his wife, Kelly Preston, to breast cancer last July, John Travolta recently deemed his past year of mourning “a personal, private journey.” After announcing the actress’ death, “with a very heavy heart,” John spent the next months in a fraught, pandemicshadowed stretch, mostly holed up in his family’s Clearwater, Fla., compound with daughter Ella, 21, and son Ben, 10. But now, the A-lister is finally determined to move forward and heal. John, 67, has made the symbolic move of selling his family’s first home, along with other properties he owned

How did you prepare for your role as an oil rig worker in Stillwater? By meeting these guys who work on the oil rigs in Oklahoma and Texas. It’s a back-breaking job lifting heavy sh*t all day long, and the performance was really informed by spending time with them. They’re all strong, but not like six-pack superhero guys. I put on weight because I wanted that beefy body type. I walk differently, I talk very differently, so there’s a physical side to that kind of transformation. But you’re always bringing yourself into the character because you’re using your own real emotions.
How do you choose your roles? I take every job based on the director, and if they’re a master director, I don’t care what their style is, I’m in and I’ll adjust to it. If you become friends, then you have a shorthand and it’s just very easy. The only thing better than doing this job is doing it with your friends. That’s why ensemble movies are really fun, especially when you have a great group of people like we did with the Ocean’s movies.
Good Will Hunting was the turning point for you and Ben Affleck. How did it change your lives? We were so broke. I was living in a sh*tty apartment with a guy I went to high school with. Ben wasn’t
living with us because he was going to marry this girl, but that fell apart and he ended up on the couch in this tiny place. Ben is six-foot-four and his legs dangled off the end, and every morning I’d walk in and be like, “God, this is just so ridiculous.” Then we sold that screenplay and our lives were never the same. We each instantly went out and bought matching Jeep Cherokees.
Do you have any career regrets? I was offered a little movie called Avatar. I was in the middle of shooting The Bourne Ultimatum and [director] James Cameron wanted to shoot during our post-production. But you always need more work in post-production, and I needed to be around. He offered me ten percent of the movie, but I turned it down. You will never meet an actor who turned down more money than me.

How do you manage to stay so down-to-earth? I have teams of people to keep me grounded! [laughs] I decided a long time ago that there was no point trying to curate an image. Just be yourself. I was 27 when things really changed and I became famous, so I did get to live quite a bit of my life as an anonymous person. And I didn’t want fame to infect my primary relationships, so OK! I just never really bought into it.

SERVES: 4-6 TOTAL TIME: 45 MIN. SKILL LEVEL

Ingredients • 2 ears of corn, shucked • Extra virgin olive oil • Kosher salt • 4 strips of bacon, julienned • 2 Fresno chilies, cut into thin rounds, seeding optional • 3 to 4 tbsp red wine vinegar • 4 scallions, white and green parts, sliced thinly on the bias • 1 baguette, cut into 1/2-inch slices on the bias • 1 clove garlic Directions 1. Preheat a grill. 2. Lightly brush the corn with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Put the corn on the grill and cook, turning every 2 or 3 minutes, until the kernels are charred and soft. Remove and let cool. Once you can handle it, stand the corn upright in a wide bowl and carefully run a knife down each ear lengthwise to cut the kernels off the cob. Reserve. 3. Coat a sauté pan with olive oil, add the bacon, and bring to medium heat. When the bacon is brown and crispy, 8 to 10 minutes, add the chili peppers and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes more. Add the corn and toss to combine. Season with salt, stir in the vinegar, and taste — it should be really good by now. Toss in the scallions, remove from heat, and reserve. 4. Toast the baguette slices on the grill. When lightly charred on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes total, remove them and rub each slice with the whole garlic clove. Drizzle with olive oil and top with the corn-bacon mixture.
