In the ’90s you were in a topgrossing movie three summers in a row. Do you rewatch any of your films? I stop on A League of Their Own whenever it’s on. We all look so young. My son [Blake] only saw it recently and said to me, “It was, like, you were a teenager, and you were playing baseball, and you were talking like Stallone.” It’s a great review. Your talk show started in 1996 after you filled in on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee when Kathie Lee was considering leaving. I called my agent and said, “Could you get me that job?” But then she decided to stay, and people were like, “Why don’t you do your own show?” What’s your proudest moment from its six-year run? The mammograms we did on-air. A lot of people come up to me and say, “I caught it [early] because of you.” My mother died of it; it always scared me. Dolly Parton Shares Her Beauty Secrets The country music legend, 75, is ticking another accomplishment off her list: launching her first perfume. The fruity-floral fragrance, Dolly—Scent from Above, is available exclusively at HSN for $59 starting July 28. Here, she talks smelling good and looking her best. How has your approach to style and beauty changed over the years? I think my look has softened. But I’m still going to always be over the line. I laugh when people say that I’m “fashionable”—because I never once thought of myself as that. What makes you feel Spreading beautiful now? I’ve always Her Wings loved to dress up. My husband and I on top of her fragrance bottle. have been married for 55 years, and I don’t feel like I should get out there in public and dress up for everybody else and look like a slouch at home for him. Why did you want to create your own scent? Well, I love smelling good. People used to follow me around saying, “What are you wearing?” I’d say, “It’s a whole lot of different things, so we’ll just call it Dolly. Someday I hope to have my own perfume.” Now I do! When I went to the perfumers, I took that combination of things that I love. I wanted it to smell like heaven—kind of soft and cloudlike. That’s why we called it Scent from Above. What kind of perfume do you think “Jolene” would wear? Jolene would probably wear something overwhelming, like Shalimar. She would wear one of those loud perfumes that wakes you up at night. She woke me up at night! Is there anything you can’t do? I think all things are possible. In fact I just hope I live long enough to do more things. That’s the only thing that worries me, that I may run out of time before I see so many of my dreams come true. I wake up with new dreams all the time. But I put them in a place where they can continue, even after I’m gone. — A N D R E A L AV I N T H A L

I wish he would have had something like the Cancer Support Community, a nonprofit network that provides resources and navigation services to patients and families [more than $50 million in free support, both virtually and in 175 locations worldwide]. As a friend or family member, you can be there and you can listen, but it’s a different conversation Cheryl Hines Suzy Nakamura when those impacted by cancer speak to someone going through the same thing. It’s so important that this community is out there, ready to support others during this challenging time. It’s so important that people don’t feel alone. —R e p o r t e d b y K A R E N M I Z O G U C H I For more information, go to cancersupportla.org Arden Myrin

Farewell to Hip-Hop Artist Biz Markie The rapper, who became known as the Clown Prince of Hip-Hop for humorous songs such as ‘Just a Friend,’ has died Biz Markie, the rapper famous for his 1989 hit
“Just a Friend,” died on July 16 in Maryland. He was 57. “It is with profound sadness that, with his wife, Tara [Hall], by his side, hip-hop pioneer Biz Markie peacefully passed away,” his manager Jenni Izumi confirmed in a statement. While the musician’s cause of death was not revealed, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in his late 40s. He told ABC News in 2014 that he lost 140 lbs. because he “wanted to live.” Born Marcel Theo Hall in Harlem, N.Y., in 1964, Markie made a name for himself performing as a beatbox artist and freestyle rapper on the East Coast college circuit in the early ’80s. His hit single “Just a Friend,” from his 1989 album
Questlove “Biz built me man,” the Roots drummer tweeted. “He taught me A LOT. We will miss him. But he will be here forever.”

The Biz Never Sleeps, made him a star but was a song he never intended to sing himself. “I asked people to sing the part, and nobody showed up at the studio, so I did it myself,” Markie once told Entertainment Weekly of the track, which was inspired by a real-life unrequited romantic crush. “I put the pain into the pen and wrote it out.” The song went platinum, reached No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and earned Markie a place in pop culture history. Although he released three more albums, none reached the same level of success. He also collaborated with other top artists, including the Beastie Boys and Will Smith, and appeared in Smith’s 2002 film Men in Black II. For these triplets, it’s baby joy—times three! IRVINE & FOOTHILL RANCH, C A L I F.
From the time they were born four minutes apart, triplets Gina Purcell, Nina Rawlings-Tran and Victoria Brown have done nearly everything together—but even they were shocked this past spring to discover that they were all pregnant at the same time. Purcell, the oldest of the 35-year-old sisters, had been trying for a third child for years but says it was worth the wait to be pregnant at the same time as Rawlings-Tran and Brown. “We were over the moon,” she says. “This pregnancy has been a huge blessing— especially to experience it with my sisters. It’s an incredible support system to have for sure!” The first of the three little ones—Brown’s second child, a boy named Zaidyn—arrived on July 6. Rawlings-Tran will follow with the birth of her first child, a boy, on Aug. 28. And Purcell’s baby, a daughter, is due Nov. 25. “I’m most looking forward to having them be best friends,” she says. “These three will have a special bond like my sisters and I do.”
“I was the last to get pregnant, so when I announced it, my sisters started crying right away,” says Purcell (left, with Nina and Victoria). Inset: Victoria’s baby boy Zaidyn.

Laurie Davies couldn’t believe it when she got the call: Her beloved Yorkie-poo Sgt. Pepper, who’d disappeared from her Florida front yard in March 2014, had finally been found—in Charlotte, Mich. “I just about fainted,” says Davies, 64, an anesthesiologist, who had searched frantically for Sarge to no avail. “I was like, ‘Holy smokes. How did my dog get to Michigan?’ ” (Davies now believes he traveled with a woman who had moved there.) Two days later she was reunited with Sarge, now 13—who’s safe at home with his brother Casey. “He came out wagging his tail,” says Davies. “He’s just the sweetest dog ever—and happy to be home.” Have a story that makes you smile? APPLE TV+ | Ted Lasso
APPLE TV+(2)
Jason Sudeikis scores again as an American coach abroad COMEDY Ted Lasso returns having just bagged a stunning 20 Emmy nominations for season 1—the most for any comedy this go-round and the most ever for a freshman comedy. That haul includes a remarkable six supporting-acting nods, in addition to the expected one for star Jason Sudeikis and his mustache. It’s a feel-good moment for a feel-good show. Sudeikis plays Ted, the American coach of a British soccer team. Initially, his was a fish-out-of-water story, but everyone (audience included) seems to have fallen for Ted’s refreshing lack of ego and ability to come up with one-liners that range from pure cornpone (“That’s a heapin’ spoonful of truth right there”) to elaborate pop ref-
erences (“You are more mysterious than David Blaine reading a Sue Grafton novel at Area 51”). He sounds like Mark Twain raised on Saturday Night Live and talk shows. Ted is starting to reveal a more vulnerable side— partly, one suspects, by being exposed to the presence of the team’s new psychologist (Sarah Niles). But this is a true ensemble show, and episode by episode we grow more immersed in the lives of Ted’s players and staff. Those supporting Emmy nominations were well-deserved. For the record, they went to Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift and Nick Mohammed. (Premiere episode launches July 23)

Kate Beckinsale is in for a shock! ACTION Many years ago Lindy (Beckinsale) was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder—in her case she responds to any sign of violent criminality by erupting into her own destructive rage of vigilante justice. To help Lindy resist these impulses, a therapist (Stanley Tucci) straps her into an electrode harness: If intrusive thoughts start tempting her to swing into action, she shocks herself. But can she keep still when faced with a murder? Well, we wouldn’t have Jolt if she could. Beckinsale smoothly carries this vehicle with little more than an arresting blonde wig and her deep, bemused purr. (Launches July 23) Beckinsale as an electrifying crime fighter.

DOCUMENTARY This giddy, reverential film salutes the decades-old art-rock band Sparks, otherwise known as brothers Ron and Russell Mael. While dating in their 30s, the couple weren’t shy about showing off their love. Now Affleck and Lopez— who are both parents—are keeping their relationship more low-key.

Everything seems to be running smoothly.” It’s been only three months since Affleck and Lopez reconnected, but sources say their bond is deep. “Even though their split many years ago was devastating for Jennifer, she has never had a bad word to say about Ben,” says the Lopez source. “She believes that it just wasn’t meant to be then and feels like they’ve been given a second chance.” Multiple sources say Affleck—who split from actress Ana de Armas in January—first reached out to Lopez as a friend in April amid her breakup with Rodriguez.

Reboots and revivals are everywhere you look in Hollywood— but who could have guessed that the most talked-about love story of summer 2021 would be an emotional real-life sequel? Part 1: Back in 2004 Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez broke off their engagement after an intense relationship that played out in a swirl of diamonds, red carpets and tabloid headlines. Part 2: Older, wiser and still passionate about each other, the superstars have rekindled their romance—and they’re determined to make it last. “They want a future together. Jennifer never thought she’d end up with Ben, but she’s thrilled that she did,” says a Lopez source. The feeling is mutual for Affleck, who first sparked buzz about their renewed bond when he praised Lopez’s “extraordinary work ethic” and “humility” in her May InStyle cover story. “They are madly in love,” says a Hollywood insider. “They are the loves of each other’s lives.” Much like the first time they fell in love, their relationship has quickly grown serious. Days after Affleck was spotted leaving Lopez’s Los Angeles home on April 30, the couple jetted off to Big Sky, Mont., for a secret getaway. Since then, Affleck and Lopez—who announced the end of her engagement to retired Yankees star Alex Rodriguez on April 15—have carved out time together in New York, Miami and L.A. On July 2 Affleck, 48, and Lopez, 52, took her 13-year-old twins Max and Emme (whom she shares with ex-husband Marc Anthony) and his 9-year-old son Samuel to Universal Studios Hollywood. (The actor is also dad to daughters Violet, 15, and Seraphina, 12, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.) Then a day later the couple—along with Lopez’s kids—flew to the Hamptons, where they celebrated the Fourth of July with beach time, boating and BBQ. “He’s very happy, and she’s wonderful for him,” says a source close to the couple. Adds the Lopez source: “They want to do everything they can to make this work.” Lopez—who previously shared homes in New York,

Once fixtures on the red carpet, the couple (above, at the Oscars) now opt for intimate outings with loved ones. During a May 31 dinner (right) at Wolfgang Puck’s Merois restaurant in L.A. (below), “Ben had his arm around her, and they looked super happy,” says an onlooker.
“Things had been lackluster between them for a while,” an entertainment source says of Lopez and Rodriguez, who dated for four years. While Lopez was busy shooting her upcoming film Shotgun Wedding in the Dominican Republic, “it was easier to let things ride,” says the source. “Once she got her mojo working, she made the move to end it.” Hinting at her relationship with Affleck, Lopez said she found new “happiness” within herself. “Once I realized that, things [happened]. Things happen that you don’t expect to ever happen,” she told Apple Music 1’s Ebro Darden on July 12 as she promoted “Cambia el Paso,” her new song with Puerto Rican rapper Rauw Alejandro. “Once you get to the point where you’re like, ‘This is not right for me’ . . . stuff starts falling into place.” With Affleck, Lopez feels she has a partner who “loves her for her and not what she represents and what he can get from her,” says

Months after they met on the set of their film Gigli in 2001, Affleck took out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter praising Lopez’s “beauty in courage, astonishing talent, real poise and true grace.” Rumors of a romance swirled, but Lopez was still married to her second husband, dancer Cris Judd. (She had previously been married to Ojani Noa in 1997.) It would be the first of Affleck’s many grand gestures. He also gave her a $200,000 Aston Martin DB7 Volante, a pair of Rolexes for her and her mother, Guadalupe, and, in November 2003, a 6.1-carat Harry Winston pink solitaire engagement ring when he popped the question. Lopez was equally lovestruck. During the filming of their second movie, Jersey Girl, in 2004, Lopez spent her days off watching Affleck do his scenes. “We didn’t try to have a public relationship,” she told People in 2016. “We just happened to be together at the birth of the tabloids, and it was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It was just a lot of pressure.” As grandiose as the start of their union was, it unraveled with the same intensity. Before Gigli’s premiere, the National Enquirer printed a story about Affleck’s alleged wild night out at a Vancouver strip club. Despite claims he had cleared it with Lopez in advance, cracks in the relationship began to show. A month later they suddenly pulled the plug on their Santa Barbara wedding, blaming “excessive media attention.” On Jan. 22, 2004, Lopez’s rep confirmed the engagement was officially over. “Ben and I split up at the moment 46

when I thought we were committing to each other forever,” she wrote in her 2014 book True Love. “It was my first real heartbreak. It felt like my heart had been torn out of my chest.” At the time, sources told People that their differences had driven them apart. Lopez didn’t smoke or drink and was happy going to bed early, while Affleck had a taste for gambling and late nights with friends. After their breakup they moved on quickly. Lopez wed Anthony in 2004, and Affleck tied the knot with Garner in 2005. “The whole breakup with Ben was traumatic for her, but she got over it,” a music source says of Lopez. earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Affleck made his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone in 2007 and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2013 for Argo. Friends say the stars—both passionate about humanitarian work (Affleck cofounded the nonprofit Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010, and Lopez raised more than $35 million for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico in 2017)—have matured and gained more in common. “She’s a business person and a family person, and he is too. That’s why they work,” says the source close to them. “Their priorities are their family.” Long open about his struggles with alcohol abuse, Affleck has said he is now sober. “Jennifer will encourage him and help him if he needs it,” says the music source. “He has been working on himself. Only time will tell if this becomes an issue, but she’s a good influence on him.” The couple’s next challenge will be their busy fall work schedules. Affleck—who can next be seen in The Last Duel with longtime friend Matt Damon— begins shooting Robert Rodriguez’s action thriller Hypnotic in September. Meanwhile, Lopez, whose romantic comedy Marry Me is set for release in February, is executive-producing and starring in The Godmother, a biopic about drug lord Griselda Blanco. (She also recently signed a production deal with Netflix.) Still, friends say they’ve found a new balance and are committed to building a future together. “They have both matured, learned from mistakes and are still very attracted to each other,” says the music source. “There’s no reason why this can’t turn out to be a lasting relationship.”

Lopez and Anthony, 52, split in 2011 after seven years of marriage. They collaborated on Lopez’s 2017 album Como Ama una Mujer and are still close friends. Their twins “get to spend time with the two of us . . . and see us working together,” said Lopez in 2017. “We’re just in a really great place.”

Reclining in rose petals, the object of a middle-aged man’s obsession, Mena Suvari became the breakout star of American Beauty, one of 1999’s hottest films. But what the world didn’t know was that for the young actress, just 20 when the movie hit theaters,

Suvari and her siblings “never had a curfew,” she says. A model by age 12, she partied hard as a teen and was unhappy enough to write a suicide note (forgotten until she found it years later). “I was lost,” she says.
Childhood Dreams
“I wanted to be an architect or an archaeologist,” says Suvari (above in fourth grade and, right, ca. 1991 after the family’s move to South Carolina). “Acting was an extracurricular.”
‘Art—my work— saved my life. It gave me an outlet and inspired me to heal’
After her family moved to Charleston, S.C., when she was 12, she felt even more lost and untethered—the new kid “just trying to fit in.” That’s when she met “KJ” (a pseudonym), a 15-year-old friend of one of her brothers. “He took an interest in me and ended up pursuing me,” she says. After repeatedly pressuring her to have sex, he brought her to the guest room above his family’s garage one day and raped her. “Part of me died that day,” says Suvari, who was then a month shy of 13. “He used me, had fun with me and then disposed of me. He called me a ‘whore.’ I never got to have a healthy expression of [sex]. My choice was lost. And that, compiled with already not feeling seen and heard, established a concept I would have of myself. That that was my value.” She blamed herself that she “had allowed it to happen,” a lasting shame that battered her sense of self-worth. The pattern was set. Make it work. Just survive. At 15 Suvari moved with her parents to Los Angeles, where she hoped to parlay the modeling she had begun at 12 (“It was fun and a great outlet”) into acting gigs. And when her manager,

performance was a way of life even when the cameras weren’t rolling. “Every time I would walk onto a set, every time I was interviewed . . . I was acting the whole time,” says Suvari, 42. “It was another role for me to play—that I was okay.” In reality, she was anything but. “Between the ages of 12 and 20,” she reveals, “I was the victim of repeated sexual abuse.” The nightmare began in sixth grade when she was raped by a friend of one of her older brothers. Later, starting out in Hollywood, she became involved with a series of older men who abused her. She numbed the pain with hard drugs— and never shared the secrets of her traumatic past. “I turned to any form of self-medicating I could find, just to get by,” she says. “I was just trying to survive.” But now, in a new memoir, The Great Peace, she’s sharing her harrowing story for the first time. She hopes she can help others who feel as “completely and utterly alone” as she once did. “For the first time, I gave myself permission,” she says, “and found the voice that I wished I had.” A bright and precocious child, Mena, the youngest of four (she has three older brothers), grew up in an opulent home in Newport, R.I., with little parental oversight from her father, Ando Suvari, a psychiatrist who had emigrated from Estonia, and mother, Candice, a nurse 30 years his junior. “I did not grow up in a family where we talked about things,” Mena says. “My father was 60 when he had me, and I never really felt like I got to know him, and that led me to feel more alone and misunderstood.”

someone she considered her friend and protector, wanted to have a sexual relationship with her, she didn’t feel entitled to protest. “By this time my family had pretty much fallen apart,” Suvari says. “My mother had moved out and wanted to find herself, and my father was in decline mentally and physically. I didn’t feel like I had any other options or was worthy of a life that was any different.” She found escape in the rave music scene and late-night clubbing. Drugs were everywhere.
“The feeling was ‘Why not, try it.’ Whatever was around,” she says. Pot. Meth. Mescaline. Ecstasy. Acid. “I was looking to not feel anything.” The next few years were a blur of drugs and desperation. Just before she turned 17, she met and moved in with “Tyler,” who was nine years her senior. He abused her, sexually and emotionally, during their three-year relationship, insisting she participate in threesomes and encouraging her to bring other women home (see excerpt). “I

FAME AND FEAR By 1999 Suvari was on a fast track to success. But as she writes in this excerpt, behind the bright lights hid a dark truth. “I was living parallel lives.” The whole time I worked on American Beauty I was grinding on empty: working to perfect my part, submitting to Tyler’s demands for kinky threesomes at least three or four times a week, and pretending that everything was okay. I had probably packed all my s--- into my 4Runner a dozen times. I drove around the neighborhood and just screamed my head off and hit the steering wheel, feeling utterly helpless, and every time Tyler got me to come back. I wondered if I would ever have the strength to leave him. I couldn’t meet a female without questioning whether or not Tyler would like her, and how I could bring her back home for him. It happened when I met Tracy, an extra on American Beauty. After we became friendly, I invited her over to the apartment. The night
started off normally. Then Tyler made one of his tiny moves, a finger on her shoulder, a brief touch with his hand lingering. But she put the brakes on it. She stood up and started toward the door. I wanted to die. I followed her and said I would walk her to her car. Outside, with every brainwashed excuse I could come up with, I tried to tell her that she really didn’t know Tyler and that this situation was all okay. I was apologizing for him, but really for myself. She listened, but as she opened her car door, she turned to me, stared me straight in the eyes, and said, “Mena, it doesn’t have to be like this.” She had seen things as they were and then she did something no one else had ever done. She told me the truth. I wished I could grab on to her and say, Take me away.

Controversial Costar
Suvari recalls Kevin Spacey as supportive—“I trusted him”—and intense on the set of American Beauty. To prepare for an intimate scene one day, he brought her into a side room where “we lay on the bed very close to one another. He was sort of gently holding me. It was very peaceful but weird and unusual.” When she learned of the sex abuse claims several men leveled at him in 2017, she says, “I thought of that day,” which had left her puzzled. “My heart goes out,” she says, “to anyone who suffers abuse.” 52

remember thinking maybe this is how relationships are: the screaming, the name-calling, the abuse,” says Suvari. “I felt like I had brought it all on in some way. Like I deserved all that. From KJ to Tyler, it was a process of destruction.” Thankfully, her film work, then beginning to take off, provided her with some solace. In 1998 she landed the role of the sweet choirgirl Heather in American Pie, a box office phenomenon that rocketed her to fame. “Before that I had been sitting on the floor of the apartment with Tyler, and we were filing for unemployment insurance,” she recalls. American Beauty followed, and playing Angela, the fantasy girl of a suburban father played by Kevin Spacey, came naturally. “You want me to be the object of someone’s affection, someone older than me?” she thought. “I’ve already been playing that role.” Making the movie, she says, “truly saved my life at that moment. It was a beautiful experience, being given the opportunity to work, the ability to express myself. Right when I needed it to save me.” Yet it wasn’t until she broke free from Tyler in 1999 that she felt she was on the path to stability. She quit drugs over time and began to find healing through therapy. There were more challenges along the way—including two marriages that ended in divorce—but she was slowly learning to “forgive myself” and move forward. She wasn’t expecting to find love again when, in 2016, she met Mike Hope, who worked in the props department on the set of her Hallmark movie I’ll Be Home for Christmas. “There’s something so beautiful about his spirit—

As she finished writing her memoir—sometimes through tears—she learned she was pregnant. Their son Christopher Alexander Hope is now 4 months old. Next up, Suvari will be filming Reagan, opposite Dennis Quaid (in which she plays the 40th president’s first wife, Jane Wyman). She also devotes time to outreach, speaking with teen runaways and survivors of abuse. “There were many times I thought I wouldn’t make it,” she says. “If I can take what happened to me and share it with someone else and maybe warn them, then I want to do that,
“Meeting Mike was a beautiful surprise,” says Suvari (with her husband in 2019). “I never thought I’d get married again. I didn’t know if I’d ever have a family. Now I look at our son and how I grew him and think, I’m a badass!”

because I did not have that person.” She’s also determined to be that person for her son. “I never felt like I had a mother figure, so I don’t always know how to be one,” she admits (her current relationship with her own mother is “a work in progress”). But, with help from Christopher, she’s learning. “He’s an awesome little person, a gift,” she says. “I still work to accept that something this beautiful happened to me, to feel good enough—but I don’t have time to feel bad for myself. It’s not about me anymore.”

Award-winning rapper, actor, activist and author Common, 49, has returned to the small screen as a debonair doctor in season 2 of Netflix’s comedy Never Have I Ever. If it’s true that laughter is the best medicine, he’s found the ultimate cure in his girlfriend of more than a year, comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish, 41. Here he tells People all about how he’s feeling the love these days, both onscreen and off.

One of the important things about relationships for me has been to really know and love myself more and be able to express the things that I want. I’ve evolved and gotten to that place. I communicate. I listen to what Tiffany has to say about how she feels and try to understand it instead of always having an answer. I watched more TV last year than I had since I was a kid. My assistant told me about this show, then somebody else told me to check it out too. It just so happened that [my girlfriend] Tiffany put it on, and I was like, “Oh man, I love this show. It’s brilliant to have John McEnroe narrating—who thought of that!?” It’s one of my favorite shows of this era in time, so to get a call and hear, “Hey, they’re potentially looking at you for a role,” I was geeked. You went from hip-hop fame to acting and already have an Emmy, three Grammys and a Best Original Song Oscar. You’re just a Tony short of becoming the first rapper to score an EGOT?

She dreamed too of everyday college moments—going to parties, and for coffee and “laughing with my friends about nothing,” she adds. “Little things people don’t think about but that make up all the joy you feel.” There’s now one big thing looming over her campus idyll: stage 3 breast cancer. Miranda, 19, who stars as Josie Pye in the Netflix series Anne with an “E,” got the shocking diagnosis on June 14. She shared it with her nearly 1 million Instagram followers in an upbeat post (“Pink is my new color!!!!!”) careful to spread awareness, not fear. “As statistics go, I am one in a million,” the New Jersey native wrote, “. . . literally—look it up on Google.” On summer break and fully vaccinated, Miranda was at the Jersey Shore with friends on May 30 when, while she was adjusting her top, her hand

In a quiet suburban neighborhood of well-kept identical townhomes in Palm Harbor, Fla., 85-yearold Anthony Tomaselli had his predictable routine. Every evening after watching Wheel of Fortune, he went to the nearby beach to catch the sunset. Returning home, he would read his prayer cards, in Italian and English. And before bed he would drink his favorite cocktail, a vodka and Diet Coke. But in the weeks after his live-in girlfriend had died, the widowed man’s two daughters, Mary Beth Tomaselli, 65, and Linda Roberts, 64, said he often seemed confused and forgetful and urged him to move into assisted living. He wanted to stay put. Their arguments became moot when Linda, a doctor’s office receptionist, called 911 on the morning of March 6, 2015, and told the operator that she and

As the man, who has asked to remain anonymous, played it for stunned authorities, Linda’s voice was heard. “I can’t take it anymore—I killed my father,” she told the man. “Well, we did. We did it — D E T E C T I V E together.” The other person in the “we” she was M I C H A E L referring to? Her sister Mary Beth. That recording B A I L E Y launched an investigation, and in early 2021 both sisters pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Linda was sentenced to 20 years in prison; Mary Beth to 15, after offering to testify against her sister. “It was the perfect murder,” Sheriff Gualtieri said at a March 2019 press conference, “because there was absolutely no sign of struggle, no sign of foul play.” And the siblings—whose father was A GRAPHIC quickly cremated, making any examination of his CONFESSION body impossible—might have gotten away with it, The sisters Gualtieri said, if Linda “hadn’t run her mouth to said (in court documents) this guy she met in the bar.” Says that guy: “This is they attacked like Arsenic and Old Lace. Who would suspect two their father after old ladies killed their father?” drugging him
that night, Linda gave Mary Beth’s daughter Lauren Johnson, 41, who was staying with Anthony, one of Linda’s prescribed sleeping pills so she wouldn’t wake up. Then Mary Beth mixed 15 more of Linda’s sleeping pills into their father’s evening cocktail. They had thought the amount would be a lethal dose, but it only made him groggy. So they placed a pillow over his mouth to suffocate him, but he fought back. Mary Beth later told detectives that next Linda directed her: “We have to get a washcloth and put it in his mouth, and one of us is going to have to hold his nose, and we had to finish what we had started.” After Anthony was dead, they removed the rag and went to bed; the next morning they called 911. “They knew he was dead, and they played along,” says detective Nelson de Leon. Both sisters “claimed this was putting him out of his misery,” says Det. Michael Bailey, “except he wasn’t in any misery.” The man who turned in his ex-lovers says he had no choice. “It doesn’t matter if they have five days, five months, five minutes, you’re not the arbiter of when it’s time for someone to die,” he says. In hindsight, Mary Beth agreed. “Perhaps,” she told detectives, “it was not our choice to make.”

The last time Kate Winslet starred in a limited TV series (2011’s Mildred Pierce), she won an Emmy for Best Actress. Ten years later she’s hoping for a repeat, this time for her deft, gritty performance in HBO’s acclaimed Mare of Easttown which landed 16 total nominations, including Best Actress. Winslet completely submerged herself in the role. “I was trying to put it into words with my husband [Edward Abel Smith, formerly known as Ned Rocknroll, 43], and I was like, ‘I feel like all 16 of my children just graduated,’ ” says Winslet, 45, who was also an executive producer on the series. “I have been doing this job for nearly 30 years, but when it comes to moments like this, it feels particularly special. By learning and integrating into that life, we got lucky, and people appreciated it.” A couple of days after the Emmy nominations, Winslet beamed

How was quarantine? Was your entire family with you? For the most part we were just locked down, my husband and my three kids [Mia, 20, Joe, 17, and Bear, 7] and I. We did a lot of baking and cooking together, a lot of very long walks with the dog— really trying to make the most of a moment in time that will probably never come around again, because my older two are going to be off and doing their own thing very soon. Mostly we were just together in one place and playing lots of silly old-fashioned parlor games and eating too much. It was fabulous. In September you’ll be returning to the red carpet, at the Emmys. Red carpets are so nerve-racking. I always just hope that I can keep myself calm and just feel comfortable and that my feet don’t hurt or that I’m not on my period or something.

‘I don’t really care what anyone has to say about me. I’m confident the way I am’
Winnie Harlow may be one of the most recognizable faces in fashion today, but her dream wasn’t always to walk global runways. “When I was really young, I wanted to be a ballerina,” says the 27-year-old model. “Then an entertainment journalist. But when I was 16 or 17, friends were always asking me to do little fashion shows to model their hats and beanies for websites. We’d go to lunch afterward, and they would pay. It was just for fun.” Harlow is more serious about her model moves these days. She’s walked runways for Victoria’s Secret, Moschino and Marc Jacobs, posed for 50 magazine covers and appeared in major ad campaigns for Nike, Fendi and Puma. She codesigned her KKW x Winnie makeup collection with Kim Kardashian West and a bespoke shoe line with Steve Madden. Now Harlow is wearing a brand-new hat as a judge on Amazon Prime Video’s fashion competition series Making the Cut, working alongside hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn and judge Jeremy Scott. “My 16-yearold self would never think that this would be my life,” she says. “Naomi Campbell texted me a

couple days ago. Stuff like that is insane. When I look back on it, I’m like, ‘That’s pretty cool.’ ” For Harlow success is about more than fame, fortune and private messages from A-listers. Diagnosed at age 4 with vitiligo (a condition in which the skin loses its pigment cells), she has helped redefine global beauty standards and break down barriers in the fashion and modeling world. “Growing up, I never saw anyone like me on TV, billboards or on the runways,” she says. “I felt like I was the only person in the world like me.” Born Chantelle Brown-Young and raised by her mother, Lisa Brown, a hairdresser, in Mississauga, Ontario, Harlow says family life with her mom and two sisters was filled with “so much love.” (She saw her mechanic dad, Windsor Young, in his native Jamaica during summer and Christmas holidays.) School, though, was tumultuous, as Harlow was bullied and tormented by classmates over her appearance. Things began to shift in her teens when a friend, journalist Shannon Boodram, encouraged her to pursue modeling. “She used to photograph me a lot, but I never took it seriously,” Harlow says. “The more I did it, the more of a following I gained on social media. I was getting a lot of love and support and people telling me that I inspired them. So I was like, ‘If doing this thing that’s just fun for me is inspiring people, then it’s a win-win.’ ”
In 2014 when Harlow was 19, she competed on
cycle 21 of America’s Next Top Model but was eliminated near the end. “At that point in my life, I was told or made to feel like I couldn’t model or that it wasn’t for me,” says Harlow, who declines to comment further on her ANTM experience. “My mother always said, “If you don’t got nothing good to say, don’t say

hings were not going well for David McCartney on the evening of Jan. 9, 2006. The Darlington, Ind., father of two was running late to a meeting— and had been stopped for a speeding ticket. But, as fate would have it, the delay put him right where he needed to be when Elizabeth Testerman’s car veered off the road in front of him, flipped into a ditch—and burst into flames. Thinking fast, McCartney called 911 and, with help from two other bystanders, kicked in Testerman’s windshield and pulled her from the car. “I got to save a life,” says McCartney, 37. “So it wound up being a pretty good day.” That life-changing episode led to a yearslong friendship with Testerman (she died in 2011), who encouraged him to continue doing good things for other people. In 2019 her message inspired McCartney—a longtime distance runner—to donate a kidney to a stranger; and since then, his goal has been to run 50-plus-mile ultramarathons in every U.S. state to raise awareness and educate people about becoming living donors. “This changed the whole trajectory of my life,” says McCartney. “We’re trying to get people involved in all 50 states. People need to know that it’s not a death sentence to donate a kidney.” Although McCartney, a maintenance worker for the city of Carmel, Ind., never got to meet the person who received his

COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
Wh a t Yo u N e e d to Know Now WITH CASE NUMBERS RISING AS T H E D E LT A V A R I A N T S P R E A D S , O U R EXPERT ANSWERS KEY QUESTIONS ABOUT BREAKTHROUGH INFECTIONS AND HOW TO P ROT EC T YO U R S E L F N OW
A FROM TOP: MARIE LE BLE/ZUMA; GETTY IMAGES; ISTOCKPHOTO/GETTY IMAGES
According to the CDC, roughly 57% of Americans aged 12 and up have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. But a small percentage of those people have experienced breakthrough infections. With the highly contagious Delta variant causing a spike in cases in the unvaccinated, how concerned should we be, and what’s being done? We asked Dr. Reynold Panettieri, professor of medicine and a pulmonary physician at Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. How common are breakthrough COVID-19 cases? It’s a very small number. Less than 0.003 percent—or about 5,000 people out of the 161 million Americans who have been vaccinated—have had breakthrough cases. Breakthrough infections are a problem with virtually every vaccine that’s ever been used. No vaccine is 100 percent effective. But there’s no doubt the approved COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. The people who are most at risk for serious illness are still those who have not been vaccinated. Are some people more likely than others to get infected after being fully vaccinated? The data really hasn’t shown a more susceptible group, but it stands to reason that patients with chronic illness or who are immunocompromised are more vulnerable. It’s hard to generalize but they may still get some protection from the vaccine and have less severe disease. Does the more-contagious Delta variant make breakthrough cases more likely? The Delta variant has greater potential to infect
BACK TO N O R M A L?

people; there’s no doubt about that. But the people at greatest risk are the unvaccinated. Every vaccine approved in the United States has shown efficacy against the Delta variant. We’re not seeing clusters of breakthroughs associated with one vaccine or another. If you’re vaccinated and you get COVID, how likely are you to experience severe symptoms? The breakthrough cases that [result in hospitalization and death] are extremely uncommon. Most people will be asymptomatic or may have the symptoms of a common cold. But there’s going to be an uptick in severe illness and death among those who are not vaccinated. What preventative measures do you recommend? Do fully vaccinated people need to wear masks? Follow the CDC and your state and local government guidelines. If you’re in large groups or in confined spaces, I think the use of a mask is a reasonable approach. But the best protection is to get vaccinated. If you’re vaccinated and you develop COVID-19, you’ll likely experience a milder version of the illness. Proud Mom
My mornings are sacred . . . When I’m
shooting, I try to get my call time to be after I drop my son Yoby [10] at school so that I can have my time with him. The morning is really meaningful and valuable. It’s our special time. I’m working on a docuseries . . . It’s based on All the Single Ladies by Rebecca Traister—she’s a goddess—and it’s something I hope will not only make a huge impact but also shed some “Truth be light on women who are single told, when and making that choice and I was in college, I loved acting. take away some of the stigma.
But I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to grow up and get a real job!’ ”
New Challenges
“I’ve always wanted to be able to do roles that each one feels unique,” says Britton, 54 (with Joe Bell costars Mark Wahlberg and Max Jenkins and director Reinaldo Green).
Sisterhood
“Chelsea inspires me,” says Britton of friend Chelsea Handler (in June). “She is so committed to her own authenticity.”
I’m a terrible TV watcher . . .
I haven’t watched a movie lately that wasn’t animated. We just saw [the new Disney film] Luca. At the end Yoby said, “Mom, you’re crying!” and I’m like, “Wasn’t that good?” I’m still learning on the job . . . Every role that I do, I want it to feel like I’m stepping outside of the box or I’m taking a new risk. I’m in my 50s now and also producing—I think it’s important to keep learning and stretching ourselves. I’m a big foodie . . . That gives me some of the greatest joy—being able to enjoy great food and connect with amazing friends. As a single mom my community is so important and such a vital part of our family. I sing in the shower or the car . . . My life becomes so busy with other things that I’m not doing the singing that I was. Let’s just say I’m rusty. But Yoby is becoming a really good musician. He plays the drums, piano and guitar. It’s fun for me to attribute it to his early years in Nashville [when Britton played a country singer on Nashville]. But I do hope I’ll sing again someday.
•
“I love summer. I love being able to have the extra time with my son,” says Britton (with Yoby, whom she adopted in 2011).
Show Dogs
“They’re all mutts. Josie [right] I adopted in Austin while shooting Friday Night Lights. Merle [left] is from when I did Nashville. Santos I adopted on vacation in Mexico.”
DAILY STATS
Morning Start
Alarm set for . . . 7 a.m.
Britton starts her day with lemon water: “It’s a habit left over from the cleanses I’ve done over the years.”
Coffee . . . Latte with almond milk. Breakfast . . . First we feed the animals— three dogs, a cat and six fish. Then I feed my son and take him to surf camp.
G o -To M e a l
“I can eat Mexican food just any old time,” says Britton.
Up Next
Britton is developing a docuseries based on Rebecca Traister’s book.

HEATHER HAZZAN/THE LICENSING PROJECT
Last dance party I was able to go away with some girlfriends during COVID. We all got tested and did a little birthday getaway to Lake Arrowhead and had a mini dance party in the kitchen, just four of us. It was a small dose of normal. Last moment of pride I just sent my children [Felix, 10, and Magnus, 8] to sleepaway summer camp for the first time. And it was very emotional. It’s also the last time I cried, so you get a double whammy here. But I was very proud of them for being brave enough to go on their own. Last romantic getaway My husband [producer Max Handelman] and I went to a castle in Ireland and tried falconry, which I’d never done. It’s the most nerveracking when they are landing because their talons are literally coming at your face. Last cocktail I made An Archer Roose [her wine company] Aperol Spritz. I love mixing bubbly with Aperol or for a Kir Royale, and it’s a yummy drink you can make with a can of wine. Last game I played My kids love this card game Rat-aTat Cat. You have to lie a bit, like a poker face, and they’re very good at it. Unfortunately, it’s probably indicative of their teenage years.
