35% of people enjoy rereading book s they love
Dig into fun! Make a beach day more memorable by building a sandcastle! We asked Greg LeBon of Archisand Professional Sculptors (SoCalSandCastles.com) for his top tips: “You want to build in the wet sand and have the tide be going out.” (Use the Tide Alert app to determine the tides near you.) When it comes to decorating, consider kitchen tools like a spatula (for spreading sand) and a melon baller. “We use this to make round and arched windows,” he says. To keep your structure strong: Use a spray bottle of water. “We spray the sculpture where it starts to get lighter in color and dry out,” LeBon explains. “If you can keep some wet, you’ll maintain the detail longer.” Find more tips at GregLeBon.podia.com.
Need another reason to get lost in a book? Reading fiction can help you better navigate social situations, say researchers in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. In a review of 14 studies, fiction readers scored better on tasks that tested how well they perceive and interact with others than non-readers and those reading nonfiction. Why? The authors point to previous research suggesting that reading provides knowledge about human psychology and social interaction, and say when readers experience things through the eyes of a character, it can help them better handle real-world social situations.

A holiday that requires us to indulge in ooey, gooey s’mores? Count us in! The key to perfection: “Make sure the marshmallow is soft all the way through,” says Lisa Adams, author of S’mores. “Metal skewers work because they conduct heat to the center of the marshmallow, but you can still get a good roast with a regular old stick.” Looking to change up the classic? Adams suggests swapping out chocolate for a peanut butter cup, a caramel-filled chocolate square, Nutella or a bit of cookie butter. Also delicious: Use cookies or brownies in place of graham crackers. “Doing just one of those things can make the s’more massively tastier!”
SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 NATIONAL GARAGE SALE DAY
Rake in extra cash! Today is the best day to host a garage sale! To cash in on your sale, Ava Seavey, founder of GarageSaleGold.com, says advertising it in the local paper is still the best way to lure in customers. And what you name your sale can affect your success, she says, adding that calling it a tag sale, yard sale or estate sale will bring in more shoppers than calling it a garage sale, which can lead shoppers

to assume you’re selling lower-priced items. “You’ll also get more people if you say ‘moving sale’—it implies that you’re getting rid of more,” she says. Another way to draw in crowds: Use words like “vintage” or “collectibles,” and be specific about what you’re selling, she advises. Say you have kitchen items or furniture instead of “household items,” and soon you’ll have throngs of shoppers!

PERSONALIT Y INSIGHT
What’s your favorite beach read ? The genre you reach for when packing your beach bag speaks volumes about your personality, studies show. Just pinpoint the kind of pageturner you favor to learn more about yourself
If you prefer…
Thrillers: You’re reflective Your love of pulse-pounding page-turners actually illustrates your serenity. That’s because quiet, patient folks often require more stimuli to get their heart rate up. In other words, it’s precisely your still-waters-run-deep demeanor that allows you to comfortably ride the wave of adrenaline unleashed by action-driven narratives.
Romance: You’re imaginative Losing yourself in love stories heightens your communication skills and improves your ability to interpret subtle facial expressions. The reason: Reading about complex relationships triggers activity in the social and language centers of the brain. Your heightened emotional intelligence goes hand in hand with greater creativity. In fact, there are two things you would risk it all for: love and a great idea.
Magic realism: Getty (4); Adobe Stock. Text: Kristina Mastrocola
You’re idealistic Between the hint of truth in science fiction and the flights of fancy in fairy tales lies magic realism. Your preference for a style that defies definition reflects your intellect and spirituality because the books you love are symbolic of bigger issues. In fact, the stories that have stayed with you over the years are mirrors of reality with just enough magic to transport you away from the ordinary.
Bios or memoirs: You’re collaborative Real-life stories of people who have overcome great obstacles to accomplish even greater feats appeal to the leader in you. Though independent and resourceful, you know that success is a team sport. Indeed, you’re drawn to this genre because you know that no one’s life story is theirs alone because we’re all interconnected.
Mysteries: You’re visionary The twists and turns of a good mystery demand that you keep multiple possibilities in your mind at the same time—this ability is an example of divergent thinking, a hallmark of visionary minds. You’re just as imaginative as you are meticulous. No wonder you always “catch” the killer before the protagonist!

“Rescuing pigs make a difference!” POWER OF LOVE
After adopting a potbellied pig at the age of 14, Olivia Head learned that while they are hotly sought after as pets when they’re cute little piglets, once they turn into full-grown pigs, many are abandoned. Feeling a passion take hold of her heart, the teen made it her mission to ensure more pigs have happy forever homes—and it changed her life too!

aking her way to the pig pens at the animal rescue, a ball of emotion lodged in then14-year-old Olivia Head’s throat. Having grown up on a farm in Brownsburg, Indiana, Olivia adored all animals, but she especially loved the family’s two pigs, Pixie and Penelope. Olivia would play and cuddle with them just as she did the family’s dogs and cats. When Penelope passed away, Olivia begged her parents to let her get another pet pig. “Please, I’ll take care of it myself,” she promised. She was planning on getting a little piglet, but when she and her mom arrived at A Critters Chance rescue, the young teen was struck by how many adult potbellied pigs they had for adoption. “Why?” she asked. “Lots of people get pigs as pets when they are young and expect them to stay cute and small. When they grow, they get rid of them,” the rescuer explained. That’s so sad, Olivia thought, and she decided to adopt an adult pig herself, coincidentally also named Penelope. But her aching heart longed to do more. Pigs are smart, loving animals and deserve to find homes where they will be understood, loved and cared for. I have to find a way to help them.
From passion to purpose With her parents’ okay, Olivia began volunteering with A Critters Chance, fostering pigs. But she soon realized her home wasn’t just a temporary stopover. Rehoming was difficult, as most people had misconceptions about pigs, thinking they are dirty and unruly. After two years, Olivia realized more needed to be done.

Pigs can express emotions, even cry tears
3 easy ways you can help local farms!
1
Support a sanctuary
Many farmers have special animal sanctuaries on their properties to ensure rescue animals are raised in humane conditions. Google “Farm sanctuary near me” to find participants in your area, where you can volunteer or donate food and gently used goods.
2
Save the flawed foods
Farmers report that up to 50% of their produce ends up trashed for cosmetic reasons. Visit ImperfectFoods.com and sign up to receive a box of “unwanted” but healthy produce that’s been turned away from grocery stores. Giving “ugly” fruits and veggies a home supports farms across the country.
3
Visit a U-Pick Farm
Many farmers say running a U-pick operation is the only way to get a fair price for their products due to supermarket competition. Visit a U-pick farm to pick your own produce and give money directly to farmers. Simply go to UPickFarmLocator.com and select your state to find farms near you and have fun picking your own.

5 simple hairstyles that cool, stun and stay put through the season’s heat and humidity Kate Beckinsale
Pretty with a plump pony The swingy tail of a high pony acts like a makeshift fan, keeping the back of the neck cool, says celebrity hairstylist Ryan Trygstad. “And loose, beachy waves add playful pizzazz while a plumped-up crown helps mask any thinning.” Q GET THE LOOK: Curl 2" sections of hair with a 1" curling iron; break apart with fingers once cool. Then back-comb hair in 1" sections at the roots, pull hair into a high pony at the back crown and secure with an elastic. Gently tug on small segments of hair through the crown for added oomph.
Sensational with a cascading braid Since free-flowing shoulder-length hair can feel stifling on a hot day, Kali Ferrara, hairstylist at The Salon Project by Joel Warren in New York City, suggests a cooling side braid instead. It exposes pulse points on one side of the neck to help lower body temperature. Q GET THE LOOK: Spritz dry hair with dry shampoo like Glamsquad Dry Shampoo (CVS.com) to give hair grip. Next, side-part hair and pull into a half-up, half-down pony; braid ponytail and secure with an elastic. Then gather loose strands underneath into a low ponytail, twist together with braid, place on one side and pin.

Stunning with a swept-back crop A shorter, swept up and back ’do lifts hair off of the forehead so sweaty strands don’t stick to the face, say Ferrara. What’s more, building volume in through the crown not only makes hair look thicker, it also draws the eye vertically, giving facial features like cheeks and eyes a youthful-looking “lift” in an instant! Q GET THE LOOK: Work a dollop of a volumizing mousse, like Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Mousse (Walmart.com), through damp hair, then blow-dry using a paddle brush, combing hair up and back. Once hair is dry, gently tease at the roots and the back of the crown. Finish by smoothing hair back and over to one side. Set the style with hair spray.

Pinning back half of the hair keeps the bulk of longer locks from falling around the face to avoid overheating, and creating soft waves takes locks up a luxe notch, says Trygstad. Q GET THE LOOK: Mist hair with an anti-humidity spray like Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray (Ulta.com) to ward off frizz, then curl 1" sections of hair with a 1.5" curling iron. Next, part hair to the side and lightly tease at roots. Then pull hair from each side of the face back behind the ears, twist the two sections together in back of the head and pin into place.

When styled up and off of the head, the spiky layers of a textured pixie create a vent-like effect that cools down the scalp so it stays sweat-free. Q GET THE LOOK: Blow-dry 1" sections of hair with a small round brush and start at the sides, brushing them down. Next, move to the top, pulling hair up and out from the root to create volume. Once hair is dry, work a pea-size amount of pomade like Kristin Ess Depth Defining Soft Matte Pomade (Target.com) through random sections up top, pulling hair in opposite directions. Use any leftover pomade on fingers to smooth down the sides.

Have lunch outdoors You’d think staying cool indoors during the day would make it easier to sleep at night, but a study in the Journal of Sleep Research suggests you’ll snooze 35% more soundly if you get 15 minutes of sun exposure between 10 am and 2 pm. Even a brief daytime blast of UV light doubles the brain’s production of sleep-deepening theta waves at night. Simply pop outside midday to water your flowers or sip lemonade on the porch.
This week’s Radical Health tip
The amino acid that REGROWS THICK HAIR For sleek, shiny and thick hair, there’s a little-known amino acid that has the power to work wonders: methionine. This protein building block is known for helping grow and strengthen hair strands. Its key compound is sulphur, which the body uses to make keratin, the main material of the hair shaft. You can find methionine in eggs, chicken and dairy products, but I also recommend supplementing with 500 mg. twice daily. Not only will your locks look luxurious but methionine also helps prevent hair fallout. courtesy of Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D. To receive 3 free Wellness Guides, order her new book, Radical Longevity, at RadicalLongevityBook.com
Savor banana ‘nice cream’ Muggy evenings heighten the production of an alertness hormone (orexin), upping the risk of restless sleep by 50%. The bedtime Rx: Blend a frozen banana until creamy, sprinkle with chocolate chips and dig in! Canadian scientists say this helps you drift off 45 minutes faster, plus prevents up to three middle-of-the-night awakenings. Credit vitamin B-6 in bananas and sugar in chocolate, which tamp down orexin release.
Later sunsets can block the brain’s production of sleep-inducing melatonin, doubling the odds of insomnia. But Cornell scientists say heading to bed around the same time each night (by, say, turning in when your favorite evening TV show ends) helps you sleep 67% more soundly. Meir Kryger, M.D., author of The Mystery of Sleep, explains that a consistent bedtime does the same thing darkness does—it encourages the brain to release a flood of melatonin.
Slip on a baggy shirt Struggle to fall asleep on hot nights? Wear an oversize T-shirt or nightgown to bed, and you’ll doze off faster, Japanese scientists say. Snug-fitting pj’s block the escape of body heat, preventing the natural evening dip in core temperature that triggers drowsiness. But loose-fitting sleepwear is all it takes to sidestep the problem and doze off with ease. —Brenda Kearns

fe e l g r e a t The 5-minute break that ends headaches! For the 60% of women dealing with headaches brought on by heat and dehydration, help is here! Kick back and sip-n-snack your way to pain-free
Drape on a cooling ‘scarf’ If frequent head pain flare-ups leave you sidelined this time of year, just stash a dampened washcloth in a zip-top bag in your fridge. When you feel a headache coming on, grab a comfortable seat on your porch and drape the chilled cloth over your neck. You’ll begin to feel 77% of your pain ebb in as little as 5 minutes, suggests University of Hawaii research. Why is it so effective? The chill cools the blood before it reaches the brain, which rapidly reduces painful inflammation.
Sip a ginger fizz Mixing a little fresh ginger into a glass of sparkling water is the perfect refresher to enjoy while your chilled washcloth works its magic. Scientists say temporary brain shrinkage caused by mild dehydration is the sneaky cause of 63% of headaches severe enough to treat with OTC meds. But sipping 8 oz. of water mixed with 2 tsp. of fresh ginger eliminates nearly two-thirds of headaches within 45 minutes. Why ginger? A related study in Phytotherapy Research found that gingerol compounds in the root calm aches and quell discomfort as quickly and effectively as prescription headache meds.
Munch on this salty snack What to snack on during your mini break? Pepitas—aka pumpkin seeds! An uptick in perspiration can deplete electrolytes like magnesium that keep brain cell fluids balanced. But pepitas have enough magnesium to cut head pain in half within 30 minutes, plus reduce the risk of future flare-ups by 41% if you eat them daily, suggests German research. Two small handfuls (about 2 oz.) contain more than 100% of the pain-blocking RDA of magnesium. —K.E. Kluznik
Simple swaps that block diabetes Wouldn’t it be amazing to reduce the risk of diabetes just by making easy tweaks to your summer routine? Good news: You can! These simple study-backed strategies let you outsmart the disease—and they’re easier than you’d think! Just…

Trade dark coffee for light Love waking up with a cup of joe or cooling off with iced java midafternoon? Smart move! Italian scientists say drinking two cups of coffee daily lowers diabetes risk by 54%, thanks to blood sugar–balancing chlorogenic acid in the brew. And by choosing a lighter roast (which is less processed), you’ll maximize those benefits: A study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that light roasts contain up to 2,400% more chlorogenic acid than dark roasts.
‘Berry’ good news! Savoring strawberries deters diabetes, thanks to anthocyanins that enhance cells’ sensitivity to insulin. Proof: Harvard scientists found that folks who ate at least 2 servings (16 or more berries) per week were 33% less likely to have blood-sugar elevations.
Swap solo for social When you’re firing up the grill, invite a neighbor over. Swiss scientists found that folks who regularly participated in social activities lowered their diabetes risk by 38%. Emotional support increases feel-good chemicals that aid in blood-sugar control while combatting the body-wide inflammation that can set diabetes in motion.
Sub out worries for wonder Fretting over to-do’s? Gaze at your garden! Stress hormones hamper insulin production, but University of California research suggests that lowering tension cuts diabetes risk in half. Tip: Japanese scientists say admiring a flower for 6 seconds lowers stress levels by up to 83%.
Switch sitting to strolling Too much sit time ups blood sugar, but moving every half hour helps. Research in Diabetes suggests walking for 40 minutes daily (even just minutes at a time) switches on enzymes that help the body use glucose efficiently, lowering diabetes risk by 68%. —Melissa Gotthardt

Your summer skin bother—solved! Hooray for the beautiful weather! The only hitch? Too much sun, sweat or heat can trigger flare-ups of skin problems just when you have the most showing! Soothe and protect this way… An itchy rash and musty odor affect 26 million women every summer, since yeast grows rapidly in sweaty creases, says Yale gynecologist Mary Jane Minkin, M.D. What helps? Dabbing 3 drops of grapefruit seed extract mixed with 1 oz. of water under breasts twice daily. Greek scientists say antimicrobial compounds kill yeast and speed healing by 75%.

Eczema? Sweat can trigger eczema flares, but doubling your healing is as easy as stepping outside for 10 minutes without sunscreen. This allows your skin to make enough vitamin D to reduce inflammation, say researchers in Pharmacology Research & Perspectives. Their study showed that folks who took 1,300 IU of vitamin D-3 daily—the equivalent of a few minutes of sun—in addition to applying an OTC

Quick cures for Who wants to be sidelined by minor health mishaps? Not you! Luckily, you can find these natural, effective remedies in your own kitchen
Relieve sunburn with green tea this way After a relaxing afternoon lounging poolside, you realized you lost track of time and forgot to reapply sunscreen. Ouch! To calm sensitive skin, try brewing tea…in your tub! Steeping six green tea bags in a bath filled with comfortably cool water and soaking for 15 minutes significantly eases pain and inflammation, University of Connecticut researchers report. The brew’s antioxidants and tannins quiet overactive pain nerves and speed the healing of damaged tissues. OR TRY THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN! Soothe sunburn with a sunshine pill? Surprising but true! Research in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that folks who took vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin,” within an hour of getting burned experienced up to 69% less pain and redness within 48 hours. Aim for 1,000 to 2,000 IU of D-3 to get the benefits.
An apple cider vinegar compress takes the itch out of poison ivy! Enjoying a hike under the cool shade of a tree-lined park is fun, but realizing later you must’ve brushed up against a poison ivy plant? Not so much. The fix: Press a cloth soaked in apple cider vinegar against irritated skin for 2 minutes. University of Missouri scientists say ACV compounds break down the plant’s itch-inducing urushiol oil for speedy relief.

HEALTH NEWS
hot-weather ugh! Ease GI upset with aloe sips You so enjoyed getting together with friends for a barbecue, but those garlicky sausages and baked beans left your stomach less than thrilled. To the rescue: aloe vera juice! “It soothes the inner mucosal lining of the gut,” says Mindy Pelz, D.C., a functional nutrition practitioner in San Jose, California. When this lining is irritated, digesting food becomes uncomfortable and can cause heartburn, bloat and constipation. “Aloe heals that inflammation and cools the burning effect.” Plus, a study in Digestion found that sipping just 1 oz. of aloe vera juice (which acts as a gentle, natural laxative) can provide constipation relief in just 8 hours. OR NOSH ON CANDIED GINGER! To quiet tummy troubles, bite into candied ginger. Research in the British Journal of Anesthesia found doing so eases nausea, while separate research from University Hospitals in Cleveland found ginger curbs the risk of uncomfortable gas attacks by 40%. Unique compounds called gingerols quiet intestinal inflammation and enhance digestion.
Tame stress with a citrus whiff To quickly create a sense of calm, slice open an orange and take a deep whiff. Scientists at Chicago’s Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation say inhaling the cheery aroma of citrus for 2 minutes eases tension. Credit goes to the fruit’s aromatic compounds, which ramp up the production of the relaxing brain chemical GABA. OR WASH YOUR HANDS! Sounds strange, but rinsing your hands under cool water tamps down tension. University of Michigan scientists say it tells the brain to “wipe the slate clean” of lingering worries, so you can shift your attention to positive experiences ahead.
Outsmart insomnia
Soothe achy knees
with an ice pack
with a pom parfait
Between road trips, chasing after little ones and all the other summer activities you love, it’s no wonder you have trouble winding down. Luckily, simply placing an ice pack on your eyes at bedtime helps you doze off in as little as 5 minutes, say scientists at Bastyr University in Washington. Why? Cooling the sensitive nerves around your eyes sends a signal to the brain to release sleep-deepening theta waves.
A tasty remedy for sore, stiff knees: Toss 1 ⁄2 cup of pomegranate seeds into a parfait or sip 4 oz. of the juice. Northwestern University scientists say this rapidly tamps down discomfort by 62%. Anti-inflammatory ellagic acid in the seeds activates enzymes that ease painful knee swelling plus help heal joint cartilage.
OR POP A JELLY BEAN! Stick a “sleeping pill” label on a bag of jelly beans, then savor one of the tiny treats before bed—you’ll doze off 16 minutes faster and sleep up to 79 minutes longer. Research in The Israeli Medical Association Journal found that taking a sleep aid (even one that’s a sham) helps your brain relax.
OR APPLY COCONUT OIL! Massaging a dollop of coconut oil into knees for 2 minutes twice daily eases pain by 60% in 48 hours, British scientists say. Its fatty acids block the production of pain-triggering hormones.

“Oops! I stuck my foot in my mouth!” It’s only human to say the wrong thing now and then. Here, our experts share easy ways to smooth ruffled feathers and start fresh
Let it go Start with you When you say something you wish you hadn’t, first check in with yourself, says expert Alison McKleroy. “Are you ‘mindreading,’ telling yourself that the other person hates you for saying X?” We often blame ourselves for something they may have taken in stride. “Making a mistake means you’re human— it’s so important to bring selfcompassion to the situation.”
Adobe Stock; Getty. Text: Kristina Mastrocola
It’s because you care! Seeing the positive side of saying the “wrong thing” will help you rebound from communication misfires, says McKleroy. “Your
regret says that you care how you’re received in the world. There’s often something beautiful about negative emotions because they show us what we value. Tell yourself, When I said X, I felt bad because I value my friend.” This lets you accept your feelings so you can then focus on the other person. See the ‘light’ side We’ve all had those cringeinducing moments when someone tells us something like they’re getting a root canal and we reply, “Have fun!” There’s so much on our minds these days, it’s hard to focus, notes McKleroy. “Don’t be afraid to be playful by saying, ‘Oops! I just realized I missed what you said—can you repeat that?’” When we’re honest, we’re basking in our humanity, and that makes people lower their guard and really start communicating.
Back on track Speak from the heart If you’re afraid you hurt someone’s feelings, a simple apology will help you both move forward, says expert Patti Wood, who advises keeping it short and sweet: “Simply say, ‘I am sorry, I messed up.’ And if there’s a backstory, you might add, ‘There’s a reason it happened, and I’d like to talk to you about it at some point, but right now the important thing is our relationship and that you know I’m sorry,’” This lets them feel seen and respected. Allow vulnerability “Over the pandemic, I’ve seen three phases of emotions,” says expert Marcia Reynolds. “At first, we felt fear, then we were drained, and finally, there’s been a shift toward
irritability—and it’s coming out in our interactions.” If you were short with someone, you could say, “I know I was curt, and it’s not an excuse, but I feel like I have no energy by the end of the day.” Acknowledging it makes it easier for them to understand where you’re coming from. Make a pact More than ever, we’re finding ourselves interacting with folks who may hold different views than ours, says Wood, who urges smoothing feathers before they’re ruffled. “Let them know, ‘We might say something that hurts each other, so can we make a rule to get to the other side of it by letting each other know if we’re going too far?’ The best thing we can do is let people know that we respect them and how they feel.”

WISE WORDS
“There’s a silver Beloved broadcast journalist Kit Hoover, host of Access Daily and Access Hollywood, is known across America for her bright smile and effervescent personality. But that positivity was forged by several life-changing challenges, including losing everything in a devastating fire. Here, how gratitude and hope keep Kit joyful, centered and thriving By Bonnie Siegler

aising three kids while simultaneously cohosting two television shows is a juggling act to say the least. And journalist Kit Hoover confesses to Woman’s World that keeping all the balls in the air can be a bit overwhelming. “Take today: My son forgot the lunch I made him, so I had to drop it off,” Kit sighs. “Then I had to make sure my daughter’s dress was hemmed, and that’s not to mention all the wash I have to do! But if I focus on keeping my family happy, it all works out in the end.” Kit’s key to balance begins at 6:30 am, during her morning chat with her 81-year-old mother. “She immediately puts me in a good mood,” Kit says with a smile. “I’m so grateful for her.” And that gratitude has been Kit’s secret to lasting peace—even in the face
of disaster, like losing her Connecticut home in a fire a few years ago. “I was pregnant, and we’d put our savings into renovating our kitchen,” she recalls. “The day of the fire, we lost everything—even my wedding ring. It was a lot to wrap my head around.” But from that tragic experience, an important lesson arose. “I was so thankful for the things that went right, like our healthy baby boy and the neighbors who helped us.” Today, Kit, her husband and children live happily in a new home in Los Angeles, where the 51-year-old just celebrated her birthday on July 29. “The trials I’ve faced have taught me that life as I know it can go away at any time, so being grateful for where I am right now is where I find joy.” Here, Kit’s best tricks to turning stressed into blessed!

We even traded recipes—it was amazing!”
lining in every storm!’’ 1
Look for glimmers of light in dark times “In life, I’ve learned to look for the silver linings in my struggles,” Kit says. “My home was burglarized last month with everyone upstairs—our money, keys and car were all stolen. But when my daughter said, ‘We’re cursed,’ I said, ‘No, honey: We are blessed!’ We weren’t home in the fire, and we didn’t even see anything in the burglary. We’re safe, and that’s our lesson: to look for the silver linings shining in every storm.”

Discover joy in the little things “My husband, kids and I have never been big TV watchers, but we’ve been having a blast bingeing shows these days!” Kit says. “It’s great for our relationship because it really just gives us the time together as a family to do something fun. And in the tough moments, remembering that connection just brings us closer.”
Slash stress with this daily trick “Running is the best stress reliever for my body and mind, but now that my knees have begun to hurt, I’m doing 30 minutes on my bike. But any exercise works! I suggest running, walking or biking to a song, then taking a break for a song, then going again to another song!” Another stress reliever? “Journaling! Just writing out my worries or joys puts me in the best mood.”

Kit’s mom, ‘Bug’ (left), inspires her ever y day
Find strength in your loved ones Kit credits her inner strength to her mom, nicknamed “Bug.” “She’s a rock star!” Kit cheers. “She’s lost a baby, she’s battled breast cancer and still, she’s just unflappable and optimistic. Her thing is, ‘This too shall pass.’” Kit also credits her dad with giving her confidence. “His nickname for me was Junkyard Dog for my grit,” she laughs. “He empowered me to believe in myself from a young age, and that has given me so much strength.”
Tap into the bliss of the present moment “I love my work and I’m so grateful for it, but being a working mom, wife and daughter, it’s impossible to do everything well all of the time,” Kit says. “There are times you can’t be where you need to be and so different aspects might suffer, but if I try to be present where I am, things usually work out. If you focus on what’s most important, I think it all comes out in the wash.”
5
6 Boost stamina with planned rest While Kit is an early riser, she admits she can lose steam in the midafternoon. “Thankfully, I’ve got a great new trick!” she says. “I downloaded this app called Nap26, and I’ll use it and close my eyes for 26 minutes. It’s more about meditation than sleep, but after, I feel refreshed. It helps me turn off my mind and gives me the energy to tackle the rest of my day!”

GOOD TIMES GUIDE Turn your favorite summer treat into a perfect excuse for a gathering! This beautiful backyard party serves up fun by the scoop as you enjoy a relaxing afternoon with loved ones
Start with a cool ice-cream cart Serve joy by the scoop with an ice-cream bar, like this one styled by entertaining pro Tara Berger (OneStylishParty.com). For a similar look, top a picnic table with a white tablecloth and set a patio umbrella behind it. Next, drape a faux floral garland across the front of the table. Make a balloon swag by knotting inflated balloons to a length of string. Tape one end to the umbrella and the other to a table leg. Line up trays of toppings and slip ice-cream cones into the wells of a clear “champagne wall” holder (like Prosecco Wall Stand, $25, in the EnFete shop at Etsy.com).
Charm with conekissed settings At her party, Berger dressed up place settings with fanciful appetizer plates (like Ice Cream Die-Cut Plates, $8 for 8, BonjourFete.com). To make your own, simply cut out a “cone” shape from tan or white paper, then add waffle details with a black marker. Next, tape cone to the back of a small white paper plate. Draw on a cherry with marker. Optional: Add a gift card to the plate as a party favor.

Customize scoops with sprinkles Streamline your sundae bar with small bowls filled with toppings like nuts, fruit, chopped candy bars and small candies. Sprinkles, of course, are a classic! To serve trendy themed blends (like mermaid, unicorn or watermelon) without paying for expensive mixed packs, just stir a small pouch of shaped sprinkles (like Wilton Sprinkles Mermaid Tail Pouch, $1, Michaels.com) in a bowl filled with basic dollarstore or on-hand sprinkles to make a custom blend.
ice-cream fun! n! Surprise them with milkshake cocktails Introduce guests to a delicious cocktail trend: boozy milkshakes! For each, blend up 5 oz. of chocolate, vanilla or strawberry ice cream and a splash of milk, then add the following flavorful mix-ins and blend: For chocolate, add a drizzle of chocolate syrup and 1 oz. of Bailey’s liqueur. For vanilla, add 1 oz. of vanilla vodka and for strawberry, add 1 ⁄2 cup of chopped strawberries and 1 oz. of vanilla vodka. Pour into glass and top with whipped cream.
Brighten any table with a beautiful sherbet bouquet

For her floral arrangements, Berger took inspiration from sherbet. “The blush and peach tones of sherbet are trending in the party world,” she says. To get the look of this bouquet styled by floral pro Ashley O’Dell (AshleysFloral.net), pop full blooms, like garden roses and ranunculus, into a pink vase; tuck in greenery to finish.
3 tips for sundae delight
1
Prep scoops ahead
You’ll have more time to enjoy the gathering when you get all of the ice-cream scooping done ahead of time. The night before your party, pop scoops of ice cream into cupcake liners, place on a baking pan and freeze. When you’re ready for fun, place the pan on your buffet. To build each cone or sundae, instruct loved ones to grab a scoop (or two!) by the liner, place it scoop-side-down on a cone or in a cup and then peel off the liner.
2 Sweeten the day with a ‘cake cone’ dessert display In addition to ice cream, Berger served a few treats that wouldn’t melt, like these creamsicle cupcakes made by KelseyElizabethCakes.com. Make your own by baking cupcakes using orange cake mix (like Duncan Hines Orange Supreme) to box directions. After baking, let cool and ice with a dollop of orange-tinted vanilla frosting. Insert a Popsicle stick into each cupcake and add to cake plate. Round out the display with ice cream cones dipped in sprinkles. To make: Spread vanilla frosting on the lip of each cone, dip into sprinkles and set upside down onto cake plate so guests can grab a cone and fill it with their favorite ice cream!
Offer up sweet sauces
Sauces like hot fudge, butterscotch and peanut butter are crowdpleasers, but open jars can lead to sticky messes that beckon bugs. Instead, pour sauces or syrups into dollar-store condiment squeeze bottles for easy pouring. Pro tip: Pour simmering water into a small cooler, place on the table and add the squeeze bottles. The water bath will keep the sauces at a perfectly warm temperature.

Turn extras into treats!
Don’t toss ice cream that may have melted! Instead, use it to make a tasty dessert that you can enjoy tomorrow: ice-cream bread! To do: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Mix 2 pints of melted ice cream with 3 cups of self-rising flour and pour into a greased loaf pan; bake for 50 minutes. Not enough “leftovers” on hand for the recipe? Pour melted ice cream into ice cube trays, freeze and use cubes to flavor iced coffee.

EASIEST After helping folks around the world melt massive amounts of flab, 140-pounds-slimmer “lazy keto” guru Stephanie Laska knows one thing for sure: “As I’ve made my version of the diet less and less complicated, everyone’s results have gotten better and better!” At this point, she’s pared her basic approach down to one single rule: “Build every sitting with three components—protein, a vegetable and some fat. That’s it!” she says. “Start with what’s already in your kitchen. No need to worry about portions either. Just stop when you’re full.” To make her formula even easier, she and husband Bill (who’s down 30 pounds and 100 cholesterol points!) created dozens of delicious recipes that require only a few ingredients and a few minutes to make. “Keeping it simple saves you money, aggravation and time,” promises The DIRTY, LAZY, KETO 5-Ingredient Cookbook author. “It’s fun most days and doable even when you’re stressed.” No wonder her devotees shed up to 19 pounds a week!

ike many of us, Laska had tried endless diets. “Yet I still ended up close to 300 pounds,” she recalls. As everyday activities became a struggle, “it hit me that I needed to create my own plan, one I could actually stick with.” She knew her body responded best to fewer carbs, “but I also knew I couldn’t handle obsessively measuring and tracking everything. IT WORKS! Sherri lost 75 lbs!
Decades of trying diets, pills, shots and hypnosis were no match for Sherri Cook’s intense junk-food cravings. Back up to 230 pounds after lap-band surgery, she had the procedure reversed. “I felt hopeless and prayed to God for help,” recalls the North Carolina grandmother. Soon after, she read about Laska’s lazy keto plan. “It wasn’t strict but was still helping women with a lot to lose—I knew it was for me!” She loved how easy and tasty its 5-ingredient salads, wraps and more were. “And for the first time ever, I had to remind myself to eat!” In eight months, the 57-year-old shed 75 pounds and got off four medications. “I’m happier and healthier than ever!” BEFORE

Soon down 11 sizes, she’s been paying her good fortune forward, constantly
It’s the no-fuss To make this ultra-lazy twist on keto work for you, there’s only one rule: Aim for protein, fat and some veggies at most sittings. The 5-ingredient way to make ‘lazy keto’ extra effortless as you drop 19 lbs a week
Real-world wow By the time Debra Ann Ball hit age 68, her waist had plumped up and her list of health troubles was long: joint pain, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and more. Weight-loss efforts made matters worse. “I overeat when I’m stressed,” admits the Indiana teacher. “And diets are stressful!” Most diets, that is. She heard Laska’s approach replaces hassle with fun, so she tried it. “Making the five-ingredient meals or having rotisserie chicken and grab-and-go salads on busy nights was easier than getting takeout,” says Debra Ann. “I loved what I was eating, and it became what I craved. I didn’t want potato chips and sugary soda anymore!” Down a quick 50 pounds and three sizes, Debra Ann is telling everyone about lazy keto. “My blood pressure is normal, my knees don’t ache. Even if you’ve failed at countless diets, you can do it just like I did!”

Keep food fresh longer! Food that goes bad before we can use it costs us up to $1,600 a year! Thankfully, these easy tips keep groceries lasting longer and boost your bottom line
Enjoy softer bread
with a celery stick There’s nothing homier than soft, fresh bread. To stave off staleness, simply stick a celery stalk in the bag with the bread, then seal it tight. Bread grows stale when it loses its moisture, but a celery stick releases moisture, which the bread then absorbs. And because celery has very little odor, your loaf won’t take on any of its flavor.

baking soda Milk spoils when bacteria grow and produce lactic acid, giving stale milk that off-putting odor. Baking soda, on the other hand, neutralizes excess lactic acid and keeps milk fresh and drinkable for an extra week past its use-by date. Just add a pinch of baking soda when you first open the container and shake it to help the baking soda dissolve —you won’t taste it at all.
Crisp wilted lettuce
with an ice bath To revive withered lettuce, soak it in ice water for 15 minutes, says Mumford. “Lettuce wilts when water in the plant cells evaporates. But ice water causes osmosis, which helps the leaves reabsorb the water they’re soaked in, renewing them.”
with apple cider vinegar Berries often get moldy before we have a chance to top them with cream for dessert. To keep them fresh, wash them in a 4 to 1 water to apple cider vinegar solution, says chemical engineer and cookbook author Jim Mumford (JimCooksFoodGood.com). “This gives berries up to a week of extra life, because the vinegar neutralizes mold; let them dry fully before refrigerating.”
Prevent moldy cheese
with wax paper “Cheese needs to breathe,” says chef Devan Cameron, owner of BraisedAndDeglazed.com. “Otherwise, moisture builds up between the wrapper and the cheese, causing mold. Just remove the wrapper and place the cheese in wax paper. This lets air in, plus the wax pulls excess moisture away from the cheese, keeping it fresh.”

TO BOOST PRIVACY: A BREEZY NOOK “I love the look and sound of grasses swaying in the breeze,” notes Willburn. “It’s calming and cooling. And grasses are one of the easiest-care perennials—they thrive in pots and create privacy in small spaces. Plus, they give a sense of enclosure without rigidity.” To get the look, tuck a chair into a patio or deck corner, then cluster a few bright pots of grasses (like creeping velvet and ribbon grass) around the chair and arrange a few pots on a nearby railing, creating a secluded nook. Give full sun; let soil dry between waterings.

TO SECTION OFF A PATIO: A VERTICAL DUO “Planting ornamental grasses (like silvergrass) in stylish, totable planters creates versatility—you can easily move them around to improve a view.” Willburn suggests arranging your pots strategically. You can create pretty privacy columns as needed or section off your outdoor area when entertaining. And if your planters don’t allow water to seep out, poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Place the grass in full to partial sun and keep the soil moist and well-drained.
with grassy displays! Set up a serene, secluded sanctuary in any corner of your yard using ornamental grasses! Gardening expert Marianne Willburn, author of Big Dreams, Small Garden, says it’s surprisingly easy to surround your space with wispy grasses that catch the breeze. Here, the simple how-to’s TO PERK UP A CORNER: A LEVELED DISPLAY “An old ladder refreshed with blue paint becomes the perfect vessel to showcase the natural beauty of smaller grasses,” says Willburn. “This eye-catching display is texture-forward—and the robin’s-egg blue contrasts nicely against the terra-cotta pots. It’s ideal for any outdoor corner.” For a balanced mix, try grouping plants (like blue fescue and sedge) by height. Here, the lower ledge showcases the shortest plants, and they gradually get taller as you work your way up the ladder. Place in full sun; let blue fescue soil dry between waterings and keep the other soils moist.

Secrets to HUGE mall savings! Going shopping is a great way to keep cool and have fun on a hot summer day. And if you know where to look, you’ll learn about big bargains too!

Virtually every mall has a guest services kiosk, where you’ll find a person ready to hand out maps and inform you of store hours. Plus, if you ask, they may also tell you about new or unadvertised deals at mall stores and restaurants, or they may give you valuable coupons available only at the kiosk. Some are handed out for free, others are sold in bulk. For example, at the Mall of America in Minnesota, you can buy a coupon book loaded with 250 offers worth $2,000 in savings for mall stores, eateries and attractions for $9.95. Tip: Some malls give discounts for members of certain organizations, like AAA, or military families.
If you’re like most of us, you’ve subscribed to an email newsletter or created an online account for at least one store. Well, most malls offer their own e-newsletters and online customer accounts too—and when you sign up, you’ll get alerted to new sales from retailers, restaurants and service providers inside the mall. Plus, many offer exclusive coupons and giveaways available only to subscribers and account holders. For example, when you sign up for a free account at participating Simon Center malls by October 31, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree. Simply check the mall’s site or customer service to find out more.

Follow on social media
Mall stores are eager to get in-person shoppers again, so they’re offering ways to save when you visit. And great news: You can find deals like limited-time sales and get insider coupons and promo codes in one convenient place: the “deals” page of your mall’s website. For example, the deals page of Pennsylvania’s King of Prussia mall recently posted about a four-day 30%-off sale on Vera Bradley luggage, and Florida’s Sawgrass Mills Mall’s page posted a promotional code good for 30% off Zwilling cookware.
Malls use social media to promote product arrivals in their stores and menu items in their restaurants. But they also alert followers to short-term sales and coupons so you never miss a bargain. For instance, Arundel Mills mall in Maryland recently used Facebook to alert shoppers to a 50%-off sale on clearance items at Converse and a sale of up to 70% off the entire store at Michael Kors. And Woodfield Mall in Chicago used Twitter to announce 50% off lenses with the purchase of eyeglass frames at LensCrafters, and BOGO pillows at Tempur-Pedic.

Sarah was sharp, Nola decided, but too frail to be a cookie snatcher. At Elana’s room, the tall woman stood on tiptoes with a dust wand, cleaning across the curtain rod above her window. “Housekeeping,” she muttered. “They’re to come every other week. Now we’re lucky to see them once a month.” “They say you’re observant,” Nola tried. “Did you see anyone at Miss Casterling’s desk?” “Other than Casterling? No. But I’ve been in my room all day. Cleaning. Someone must.” Nola frowned. Elana could see over the counter, but reaching through to the desktop didn’t seem likely. By the time Nola finished talking with Elana, George had awakened and wheeled himself to his room. Nola met him there, wheelchair parked within easy reach of a high, stiff-backed chair where he sat. A pair of grippers hung from a hook on the side. “We’re investigating a disturbance at Miss Casterling’s desk today. Did you see anything?”
“I’m an engineer, miss. Details are my business. But I didn’t see anyone.” “Did you see me, when I was there?” “You were there?” “You were asleep at the time.” George shrugged. “I don’t observe as well when I’m asleep.” Nola nodded, focusing on her list of suspects. “Tell me,” a voice from behind Nola interrupted. The door had opened and Elana, followed by Sarah entered. “Are you a progressive detective?” “I’m not sure I understand.” “We’re old, detective, but we’re not stupid. It’s obvious you suspect one of us of being a cookie thief. None of us wants to make life hard for you. Can this be like on TV? The guilty one will confess but with a plea deal in place?” “You’re mistaken,” Nola smiled. “I don’t suspect any one of you. But tell me about the deal you had in mind.” Nola listened, then smiled. “That sounds like a reasonable deal.” —Gary Delafield

Airport angel When Woman’s World reader Kimberly Morgan was nervous about a speech she had to make, an angel calmed her! She writes:
M
any years ago, I was selected to be the keynote speaker at a large women’s conference in Washington, D.C. As I arrived at the airport, I became paralyzed with fear. Who am I to empower women? I wondered. There are so many who are more qualified and could speak more eloquently. As I entered the airport, I squared my shoulders, took a deep breath, and prayed, “God, when I speak to these women, may they not see me, but may they see You. And when they hear me, don’t let them hear me, but let them hear You.” The airport was enormous, and I wasn’t sure where my gate was. As I was standing in line at the information desk, I felt someone pat the Bible I was holding. “I love that book,” I heard. I looked to see a woman in a wheelchair. She had one of the sweetest and most lovely faces I had ever seen. As I smiled back, I noted her heavenly blue eyes. They were
so warm, comforting, nurturing. When it was my turn, I looked away to talk to the agent, and when I turned back
“She then stood up from her wheelchair and vanished into the crowd!” around, the lovely white-haired lady was gone. As I headed to my gate, there she was again. I stopped and, again, she chatted, and asked more about the meeting in which I was the reluctant speaker. I felt a warmth I so desperately needed. I then walked away to my assigned gate, and to my amazement, there she was. She motioned me over, took my hand in both of hers and spoke, “God bless you, my dear.” She then uttered the same prayer I had said earlier. Tears rolled down my cheeks, peace and comfort washed over me and the world seemed to stand still at that moment. People were standing quietly and looking at us in utter silence. The woman then stood
up from her wheelchair and vanished into the crowd. I walked to where I saw her walk and she was nowhere to be found. I knew, beyond a doubt, I had been with an angel. I was able to go and speak with new confidence and warmth in my heart.
ANGEL EXPERT KYLE GRAY SAYS… “Prayer is the medium of miracles, and when we surrender to our higher power, we let divine purpose lead the way. I believe prayer creates a magnetic aura, attracting people and energies that can help remind us of our purpose and how to stay aligned with the divine plan. The moment Kimberly uttered her prayer, the angels took the lead to provide her with the reassurance she needed.”

Circle of kindness Readers share little reminders of how much goodness there is in the world “THEY ARE FILLED WITH APPRECIATION!” My friends and I call ourselves the GGs, which stands for Golden Girls. A favorite thing we do is to purchase groceries for random shoppers at a local grocery store. The response from the recipients is always one of complete surprise and overwhelming appreciation. One gentleman was taking care of his sick wife and he was so touched by our giving. Once he got to the parking lot, he came back into the store and said, “Here is a little donation so you can pay it forward for me.” The circle of kindness continues! —Diane Stone, Gardena, CA

“WE WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT THEY DID FOR US!” Last year, my husband had COVID19 and was very sick for three weeks. I took care of him during this time, which meant quarantining myself. After asking friends and family for prayers, one set of friends went even further than that. Nancy and Jerry live over an hour away, in a different state. But they made the trip to deliver us food—from our favorite restaurants. They also brought cute knickknacks and magazines to cheer us up. They will never know what that meant to us! — Amy Hamman, Edinburg, VA
“HIS WORDS BROUGHT SUCH ENCOURAGEMENT!” After a long day that felt full of failure as a mom, I waited with my younger son while my older child attended his Boy Scout meeting. To while away the time, my younger child and I read a book. Later, the pastor of the church where the meeting was being held walked past us. He noticed my son crawl into my lap and give me a big hug. Then the pastor remarked, “He knows he’s loved, and that’s all that really matters.” His words brought such encouragement to this weary mother on a tough day. —Allison Wilson Lee, Belle Isle, FL

Following the noise to her driveway, she found a ladder propped against her garage and Jonathan McCabe atop it, with a hammer. “What are you doing?” “I’m a roofer by trade. Alexa told me your gutters were loose, so I’m fixing them. A small token of thanks for the delicious meal and the TLC.” “All recovered?” she asked, trying not to stare as his chiseled arms moved. “Good as new,” he proclaimed, his smile making her go all soft and gooey inside. She brought out freshly brewed iced tea, and they chatted while he worked. To her surprise, Valerie found herself telling him about her struggles as a single parent. In return, Jonathan confided that it had been equally difficult for him and Alexa after his wife had died.

“Looks like we both hoped the move here would start a new chapter,” he said. Valerie could only nod. Had she really been looking for a new start when she came to town? Or was this the first time in a long time she’d felt like she even wanted one? Two weeks later, she followed a hostess to a table in her favorite Italian restaurant. But instead of her daughter sitting there, as they’d arranged, she saw Jonathan. “There must be some mistake,” she said. “I’m supposed to be meeting Faith.” Looking equally confused, he surged to his feet. “And I’m meeting Alexa.” Comprehension dawned simultaneously. “We’ve been set up!” he laughed. “I’m so sorry.” Valerie was mortified. “I don’t know what was Faith thinking.” “I’m not sorry at all,” Jonathan said. Surprise made her breath catch. “No?” “No, I’m not. Our daughters have accomplished what I’ve been trying to get the nerve to do since you brought me that lasagna.” With a gallant sweep of one arm, he pulled out a chair. “It’s been a long time, and I’m hopelessly rusty, but…Valerie Kendrick, would you be my dinner date?” As a wide smile spread across her face, Valerie realized she hadn’t felt this carefree in years. “I’d like that very much.” Out in the restaurant’s lobby, Faith held her cellphone to one ear. “Well?” she heard Alexa demand. “Wait, wait…” Faith muttered. Then, with a fist pump, “Yes! They’re staying. And they’re gazing into each other’s eyes.” “I told you!” Alexa said. “No,” Faith interrupted. “I told you!” “They’re a perfect match!” the girls chorused. —Shelley Cooper TO ORDER A SUBSCRIPTION TO WOMAN’S WORLD OR FOR HELP WITH A SUBSCRIPTION: 800-216-6981 Woman’s World is published weekly. With its compact yet powerful motor it can go up to 6 miles an hour and its rechargeable battery can go up to 8 miles on a single charge. With its low center of gravity and inflatable tires it can handle rugged terrain and is virtually tipproof. Throughout the ages, there have been many important advances in mobility. Canes, walkers, rollators, and scooters were created to help people with mobility issues get around and retain their independence. Lately, however, there haven’t been any new improvements to these existing products or developments in this field. Until now. Recently, an innovative design engineer who’s developed one of the world’s most popular products created a completely new breakthrough... a personal electric vehicle. It’s called the Zinger, and there is nothing out there quite like it.

fter recently purchasing a new dress, I washed it in preparation of wearing it that Sunday in church. That weekend, I wore it proudly in the front pew, and while I felt fantastic in it, I couldn’t stop tugging at the collar, which felt quite tight. I figured it shrunk in the wash, but when I got home and took it off, I realized that I’d had it on backwards the whole time!
