For many students of A Course In Miracles, the initial attraction is found in the fact that it appears to blend a high degree of mysticism with intellectual content. In other words, you can have this very transcendent experience without giving up any of the God talk that you have grown accustomed to over the years. The problem is, that God talk too often gets in the way of genuine spirituality. Words are important to the degree that they enable us to communicate with one another. So long as we perceive ourselves as separate bodies with separate minds, we need something to bridge the gap. Words can work. But in the end, they are only substitutes for some more meaningful communication. If we begin our practice of the Course by rooting ourselves in its language, then we are impeding our ability to fully absorb its message. The ideas that are presented in the course go beyond mere words. They are extensions of God. If we would receive them that way, then we have to acknowledge that our reliance on language and ideas is a block. If our hands are full when we go to meet Jesus, then they cannot open to grasp his hand. That is why the Course so often talks about undoing. Ram Dass said many years ago that he was not a Hindu nor a Buddhist nor a Christian but rather an undoist. We do not fully appreciate what a radical and transformative idea this is! To undo is to do nothing. It is to trust our absolute perfection as a fact - pure and clear and true at this very moment. There is nothing that needs to be added, nothing that needs to be taken away! If we can fully grasp that - fully hold in in awareness - then we are practicing the Course. But for most of us - me included - undoing is more gradual. It is more gradual because our approach to it is more gradual. We cannot fully embrace it so we embrace little pieces of it. We bring segments of our story to the Holy Spirit, little shards of our experience. We cannot give it all away. That's okay. The Holy Spirit takes what we offer and transforms it. Little steps are not a problem, because we are not actually going anywhere. We have arrived. Surrender words and the ideas to which they seem permanently attached. "Become as little children" - free of judgment, free of the desire to do anything but practice joy.
