How to Mix and Match Living Room Furniture

When it comes to decorating a home from scratch, there are many decisions to be made, ranging from the flooring that you need to put down in each room to whether to get matching lampshades for your bedside tables. One of the most important rooms to get the decoration right in is your living room, as this is an area that you will undoubtedly spend a considerable amount of time in.

Choosing furniture is an important part of getting your living room just right. The items that you choose should be coordinated with the colors of the walls and floors in the room, but thought also needs to be given to how to mix and match pieces of furniture for the best finished look. Possibly the easiest and most tried-and-true method for getting a great looking interior decor is to choose to invest in living room furniture sets instead of picking out individual furniture items such as coffee tables, a sofa, armchairs and bookcases; indeed, there are a number of advantages to doing this.

Firstly, you will save a great deal of time - and even money trying to source items that you think will go well together. Secondly, you will be guaranteed a finished look that is both stylish and coordinated; in other words, there is no chance that your 'mixing and matching' will go wrong. Regardless of the benefits of buying living room furniture sets, many people do like to add a little creativity to their interior designs, and rightfully so. This can be done using a living room furniture set as a basis for adding other items into, or instead simply starting from just one item of furniture that is a favorite of the home owner.

The main way to make sure that your furniture works well together is to ensure that there is a common 'theme' running through each and every item that is in a particular space. The theme can be color, texture, style, period of construction or something entirely different. This is not to say that all items need to be made in the same period, have the same texture or be of the same color, but instead that you should stick with a few themes and make sure that one or two are reflected in each and every piece of furniture that you have in your living room.

To give a concrete example, you could choose to keep a contemporary theme with plenty of black and white colors, modern materials, and a few pops of bright blue. With this in mind, a glass TV stand, a glossy black living room set, a chrome and glass coffee table and some bright blue accessories or modern art on the wall could look fantastic. It can actually be extremely beneficial to vary texture, even when using natural woods and more traditional styles in your interior decor. Many can worry about matching too many natural materials and patterns, making a space look oldfashioned and uncoordinated.

These worries are entirely unfounded, however, if a couple of rules are abides by. Firstly, it is necessary to keep a theme running through every item, as mentioned above. Oak living room furniture sets can be matched with items made from mahogany if both pieces feature a natural wood grain, as this then becomes a recurrent theme. Whilst maintaining themes throughout your space, make sure that you do not add too many, and also that there are not too many dominant pieces in any given space. By their very nature, the quality of a natural wood finish can be very alluring and eye-catching, so avoid using tons of this material everywhere.
