BODY FOODS NATURAL HANDMADE SKINCARE

Catalogue 2014

HOW IT’S DONE Have you ever heard the phrase “The longer the shelf life, the shorter yours”? This phrase was meant for food off the shelf, but it applies just as much to skincare products. Lets just say it’s takes a big ‘ol coctail of chemicals and preservatives to make skincare products last for years on supermarket and drugstore shelves and in warehouses. And what about all those jars that eventually end up on the landfill. Shouldn’t there be a better way of doing this, a way that’s both ethically and environmentally sane? Guess what, there is.

LOCAL, FRESH & ETHICAL All products are made fresh in small batches and sold locally. And to avoid uneccessary packaging your jars and bags can be reused over and over and over.

YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS CHOOSE A JAR OR BRING YOUR OWN CLEAN CONTAINER - GLASS JARS ARE THE BEST, PAPER BAGS ALSO WORK WELL FOR BATH SALTS - CHOOSE YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCTS AND HOW MUCH YOU WANT AND I’LL GET BUSY IN THE KITCHEN. ALL BUTTERS AND SOAKS WILL THEN BE FILLED INTO YOUR CONTAINER WHILE ALL BALMS ALWAYS COME IN ALUMINIUM TINS FOR PRACTICAL REASONS.

HANDMADE SOAP I make all my soaps in small batches using the traditional cold process method. This method takes some time - 5-6 weeks to be exact - but is undoubtedly the best method for producing the highest quality soaps. Cold process soap bars are made using a combination of high quality vegetable oils, butters and lye. Lye sounds a little scary, but all the caustic qualities of the lye are removed during the saponification process. When the lye interacts with the oils or fats, it creates glycerine. The type of oils and fats used make a difference in how hard or soft the soap bar ends up being, and how well it lathers.

I always have a variety of soaps in stock. Ask me what’s in stock, or which batches are currently curing and probably ready in a few weeks or days time. Larger batches are made by order. Some soaps I make include: Raspberry Cream Rose Geranium Lavender Cocoa Coconut Vanilla Pink Grapefruit Sweet Orange Unscented Some oils and butters I use include: Coconut Oil Sunflower Oil Palm Oil Olive Oil Wheatgerm Oil Avocado Oil Raspberry Seed Oil Sweet Almond Oil Jojoba Oil Shea Butter Cocoa Butter Mango Butter Avocado Butter and many more... Some soaps can include botanicals such as lavender flowers or seeds for exfoliation. Scented soaps use either essential oils or allergen free fragrances.

Epsom salt is a fine grain salt that is said to heal aches and pains. Bathing in Epsom salts helps to reduce water retention and tummy bloating, says life coach Janey Holliday of Making Life Easy. She recommends a bath three times a week in a dilution of two mugs of Epsom salts per bath.

Tip. Each salt can be combined with a selection of botanicals and scents. Please ask about availabilty, I am always happy to help you find your own favourite mix.

LIPBALM All lipbalms use coconut oil, sheabutter and olive wax as a base with the exception of chocolate or orange scented balms which contain raw cocoa butter. SALVES & BALMS There are times when the regular creams and ointments just aren’t enough and a more concentrated and pure salve is asked for. I make salves for sensitive damaged or very dry skin for you and your little ones, during or after pregnancy, cracked feet and ellbows and skin irritations. My salves are made of a high concentration of pure raw organic shea butter which gives it a natural nutty scent. I never use water in my formulations which means there is no need for harsh and possibly damaging preservatives. I make my lipbalms in small batches and make them available in 50ml cosmetic safe aluminium jars. Ask me about stock availability, large batches are made by order.

MISSION Substances applied to our skin, be it nutritious natural oils or harsh chemicals, are absorbed and introduced to our blood stream. While chemicals absorbed into the blood stream can cause toxic effects, substances which include nutritional vitamins and minerals can give highly beneficial results to the body and general health. So if our skin has been designed to protect us from harmful chemicals, why do we intentionally put some of the most harmful chemicals onto our skin on a daily basis, ironically enough with the intention of protecting and nurturing the skin? “It is my mission is to stay away from harmful chemicals and provide only high quality, clean and nurturing products. I aim to provide an alternative to consumers who are aware of the harms of chemicals and damaging preservatives and people with sensitive or damaged skin who are feeling forced to look for natural alternatives.” - Selma Karlsdottir
