APRIL 2014

This is genetics for life.

Jim Conroy General Manager Welcome to Semex’s latest Holstein and Jersey catalogue. Each catalogue produced is our opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to offering you the best product to deliver profitable results. Working with Semex you’re covered, whether you’re looking for outcross bloodlines, high fertility, functional type, newly released daughter proven sires or high reliability sires. This is Genetics for Life! At Semex, we’re also working on revolutionary solutions that can impact your bottom line. As disease continues to impact overall herd health and profitability, we recognized long ago the need to help breed a healthier, disease resistant herd. In 2013 we launched our Immunity+™ sires worldwide to assist our clients in this battle. With 25% heritability, Immunity+ sired daughters will have less disease and will help improve the herd’s overall health and longevity.

“ We chose to use

Immunity+ bulls because it just makes sense. We can improve herd health without increasing costs.” Leo Soares Domingos Ribeiro Dairy & DR Dairy 1,800 cows Chowchilla, California

“ I am very happy with

Immunity+ sires. During the harsh winter we’ve just had, we didn’t treat any Immunity+ calves for scours or pneumonia and I’m pleased with their response to vaccines. And that makes my job easier!” Nate Bennet, Herdsman Schwab Dairy Farm, 900 cows Delevan, New York

4

“ Using 100%

Immunity+ gives us the opportunity to build a healthier herd. We also like the advantage that some of the Immunity+ sires are Repromax™ sires.” David and Gail Hudson Owners of 550 cow herd Cool Haven Ltd, New Zealand

Semex’s exclusive, patented Immunity+ sires have been tested and confirmed to have high levels of immune response. Studies show that Immunity+ sires pass on their natural defense to their daughters and future generations.

ANIMAL MODEL – The animal model represents proven methodology for calculating Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs). Evaluations are based on the animal and its relationship to other animals being evaluated. Information from the animal itself, its ancestors, and its progeny are incorporated, with all known relationships among the animals considered. PRODUCTION TRAITS – Production traits are expressed in predicted transmitting ability, which is an estimate of the genetic superiority or inferiority that an animal will transmit to the offspring. TYPE TRAITS – Type Traits are expressed as Standardized Transmitting Abilities (STAs). This allows you to easily compare different traits of the same bull and see which traits have the most extreme values. The graph below illustrates normal distribution of bull proofs for conformation traits.

proofs are expressed as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) displayed using a - 20 to +20 scale, with a standard deviation of 5. A rolling Genetic Base is used to express Conformation EBVs. In 2014, this base includes all proven bulls born in the most recent 10-year period (19992008). A sire’s conformation proof is based on all classifications of his first lactation daughters using a linear type classification system. Daughter scores provide the basis for EBVs for major type and descriptive traits. Major traits can be used to narrow down the field of sires (e.g. feet and legs.) Descriptive traits can be used to focus on specific traits (e.g. correct foot angle).

LIFETIME PROFIT INDEX - The LPI provides a single rating of the overall genetic merit of a sire based on the production, conformation and auxiliary traits known to affect longevity, durability and profitability of its daughters. If the sire has been genotyped for the 50K SNP panel, a GLPI is provided instead of an LPI. ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUE - Production proofs are expressed as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which are measured in Mature Equivalent Kilograms, for Milk, Fat and Protein Yield. The single EBV published for Milk, Fat and Protein Yield is the average of the first three lactations. EBVs are also provided for Fat and Protein Percentages. CANADIAN TEST DAY MODEL - The Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) is responsible for calculating production proofs for sires and cows using the Canadian Test Day Model (CTDM), which compares the progeny of each sire to their contemporaries using data from each test day. A unique feature of the CTDM is that separate EBVs are available for Milk, Fat and Protein yield, as well as Persistency and Somatic Cell Score, for each of the first three lactations. ROLLING PRODUCTION BASE - Production and conformation EBVs are calculated relative to a rolling base which is updated in January each year. In 2014, the rolling base includes all cows born during a 3-year period (2006-2008) having test day records in the CTDM evaluation. Active sires tend to have higher production EBVs, since their proofs are expressed relative to this cow base. Conversely, the EBVs of older sires tend to decline as the rolling base is adjusted. STANDARD DEVIATIONS - Simply put, the standard deviation tells us how far a bull is from the mean (average) value of all the bulls. The graph on the right shows the normal distribution of bull proofs for conformation traits with 68% of bull ranging from -5 to +5, 95% from -10 to +10, 99% from -15 to +15, etc.).

DESCRIPTIVE TRAITS Descriptive traits are evaluated using the same method as the Conformation but focuses on specifics with the greater number being preferable except for the Mid-Scoring traits that are circled. For the Mid-Scoring traits the higher the number the greater the tendency to exhibit the trait as noted by the letter (e.g. 9S - very high tendency to transmit Straight for Rear Leg Side View). A value of 0 is considered the most correct.

T HE PATH FOR DEVELOPING MORE DISEASE RESISTANT, HEALTHIER COWS IS SIMPLE AND CLEAR... IT STARTS WITH IMMUNITY+ SIRES.

Delivering

innovative solutions

Brad Sayles, Semex Vice President Global Marketing and Dr. Bonnie Mallard, Professor of Immunogenetics at University of Guelph

Jay Shannon, Semex Global Dairy Solutions Manager

Delivering on Disease Resistance Promise No matter whether you manage your cows on pasture, in commercial housing or by other methods, it’s a big challenge to maintain a healthy herd of profitable and efficient cows. If a cow becomes affected by disease, modern management and medicine are used to remedy the situation. If that’s not possible, the unfortunate decision to cull the animal may have to be made. Either way, both result in added costs that must be absorbed by the dairy… But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if there was a way to breed cows that have a higher immune response, and thereby have a greater resistance to disease built right into them?

Immunity+ sires are those possessing an extremely high immune response rate, with only one in 10 bulls qualifying as Immunity+. Based on the extensive research of high immune females, and applying genetic transmitting principles that go with a 25% heritable trait, we can estimate that Immunity+ sires’ daughters will have 4-8% less disease incidence. Although this technology is new, (only released about a year ago), early data appears to validate the technology and then some!

Semex was able to retrieve data from US dairies in herds with both excellent health recording and sufficient Immunity+ daughters in order to make a valid comparison. Although the analysis For generations, we’ve all observed cows or cow is very limited at this stage due to low numbers families that were more resilient (less sick) than and specifics cannot be responsibly shared, others. At Semex, we believe the key to better the three large dairies studied showed no less health lies in the genes and with Immunity+ sires than an 8% reduction in disease incidence we can successfully breed both a healthier cow when comparing daughters of Immunity+ sires and a healthier herd. to daughters of other sires. So far, the largest differences observed were for mastitis and calf The High Immune Response (HIR) technology pneumonia. These early indications show lots developed by Dr. Bonnie Mallard and her of promise, and it will be interesting to see how colleagues at the University of Guelph has the higher than expected differences hold up as been more researched than most technologies more daughter data becomes available. that are brought to the farm. This research tells us that HIR cows have 19-30% lower Additionally, we have been excited to hear incidence of disease compared to the herd unsolicited anecdotal evidence from dairymen. average. And, these cows respond better to For example, recently a dairyman using several commercial vaccines and also produce higher studs, reported that a bug hit his dairy’s calf pen. quality colostrum for their calves. As a result, Unfortunately, he lost 11% of the daughters from they’re more profitable, by bringing in more other sires (3/4 of all calves), but none of his revenue, lowering costs and wasting less of the Immunity+ sired calves (1/4 of all calves) were dairyman’s time. lost. The discovery of HIR was a game changer, as it revealed that high immunity is passed on from parent to progeny at rates much like production and some conformation traits. Compared to most health traits with low heritabilities of <10%, immune response is considered moderately to highly heritable at 25%. This means it can be selected for and improved upon with each generation. Semex has applied this technology, and developed an exclusive line of HIR bulls known as Immunity+™ sires.

More validation is seen when looking at sons of Immunity+ sires. Seven current Immunity+ sires have had sons tested for HIR. Over 50% of these bulls’ sons qualified to be Immunity+, compared to the standard of 10% of all bulls tested. If we assume transmission from sire to daughter is similar, then the advances achievable in just one generation are very exciting! And, knowing it’s a trait based on over 2,000 immune-related genes, the health benefit will be repeated with each subsequent generation. Immunity+ is Genetics for Life.
